It's a damn good bottle! Noticed they labeling/packaging changed as we saw a bottle in a new liquor store here and it was completely different looking.... As for the Big Peat.....now you've got us curious!
Another very interesting one is the Six Isles from Ian Macleod very similar to the peat monster , it’s also a blended Malt and Non chilled filtered no color, check it out , nice review. Cheers
Good morning gentlemen and happy fourth of July! I'm a scotch noob and appreciate your reviews and banter. Took your recommendation and purchased the Peat Monster (really enjoyed it). Do you have any other recommendations that are similar to the PM? I'm also a fan of the more sweet, fruity, and even sherried whiskies as well (although I'm kinda of a lightweight when it comes to anything over 46% ABV). Thanks for all that you do!
Hmmmm...well, you obviously like some peat too, so have you ventured into some of the "sweeter" peats....like maybe a Laph Quarter Cask? I'm finding over the course of the last 2 years, that all roads lead toward Islay (peat) and the higher ABVs are in fact more often than not have more to offer...even if you have to add a drop of three of water. Now, if you like the peat but want to explore, there are plenty of offerings out there that can give you a little peat/smoke with something else...like a Highland Park. There are plenty of good fruity offerings that are very affordable as well (look to a Balvenie 12 DW or a Glenfiddich 15 Solera). Of course, these are just a few off the top of my head, but hopefully other commentors will chime in on their thoughts...at least that's the hope with this entire adventure of S4Ds.... :-) Thanks for watchin', ~Mark
We've given a solid 4 (was Dalmore King Alexander III), but to compare this to the Lap10 and QC. It's way smoother and sweeter than the 10, which really puts it in the same realm of the QC. I'd have to have them side by side to really get into the subtle differences. The 10 is a bit rough around the edges and does not have the sweetness you find in the QC. ~Mark S4D
You know, I LIVE me some big ol' hairy, peaty drams... However, I tasted this at a store tasting and wasn't that crazy about it. Perhaps I was given a sample that was in an older, opened bottle or something. I also didn't get to spend much time getting to "know" it. I DO typically take a few weeks to learn and experiment with a new whisky adding different amounts of water, allowing it to sit/open up/etc...but wasn't inclined to go back to this one based on that first tasting. All that to say your collective agreement and high scores have inspired me to buy a bottle for a revisit and run it through the paces. Thanks! 👍
Really curious to hear your thoughts on this if you give it another whirl. We all really enjoyed this one and I personally will have a bottle on my bar in the future. But, to each his own and that is said with a smile, we all have our own unique loves when it comes to the wonderful world of scotch! Anyhow, keep us informed on your take!~Mark
I wouldn't go so far as to say "wrong".. LOL! When it comes to what whisky you like or even how you like to drink it, you're NEVER wrong! ;-) Cheers & HNY! ~Mark
Great Review Guys! It was nice to have a dram of this great blend while listening. On your live stream in the next video you were asked "Best scotch for $60"... this would have been a great option. as for the Bond Scotch movie... How about "A Dram is Not Enough"?
Yes...yes...and YES! You're absolutely right about a top scotch for $60...IF, you like peat! And as for the title....that's good...but so is "Peat Finger"! ;-) Thanks for the comment Duncan and for checking out the reviews and Live Streams, which are getting quite fun!
I am not a peat head ... yet but I couldn't on the Cask Strength 1.75 L bottle. I will keep it until I develop an appreciation for smoky things. One more thing, If you ask Compass Box, they are allowed to tell you more info about the juice in the bottle. You just have to ask to get around the restrictions. Email them and you will get what you NAS critics are asking for.
S4D, I've never had a Compass Box, but I only hear good things about them. The master blender is a genius. I hear the Flaming Heart is suppose to be really good to, more money though. I would imagine making a blended scotch that taste great, would be harder then making a single malt?
I'm thinking it would just take different skills to get it right. Compass Box puts out some good products and the prices are reasonable for what you get. They are also extremely transparent about what's in the bottle. I always appreciate that. If you try one, let us know what you think. - Shawn
Mark, after receiving my Bunnahabhain 25 & Glengoyne 25 from MOM, a couple people convinced me to buy another Glengoyne 25 from TWE before that hidden gem spikes in price. So 61 bottles when received. :>))
hey guys, another great video i really enjoyed it. i just wanted to say i live in the UK and was in a super market called Lidl (i don't know if you have them in the US but there a cheaper more affordable shop) and they seem to have a contract with a distillery called Glen Alba, i was at the counter to pay and saw that the had a 34 year Glen Alba for £44.99 (under $60) i went home and did some research expecting to find poor reviews but apparently its very good, its matured in cherry casks and wondered if its a brand you've come across before or perhaps tried? i myself haven't tried it but i will be buying a bottle out of curiosity definitely.
+Ashley Johnson Hello from across the pond. Anytime you can get a 34 year for that price, it is worth a try. Considering Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister when this stuff was distilled, the scotch trends were very different then. It probably is not great scotch due to the price, since 34 year macallan is going for crazy money, but it is worth a try. Please let us know what you try and what your rating would be. -Andrew
Scotch 4 Dummies hey Andrew thanks for the reply, yeah like you say 34 years is a long time and the price is hard to haggle at for it so curiosity got the better of me and I've since picked up a bottle but have yet to open it, would me more then happy to ship you guys a few mini bottles even if it was just to try it no pressure to review it, I just don't think it's available in the US and wouldn't want you to miss out if it turns out to be a good bottle
I gotta be honest, I love peaty whiskeys.... this was very underwhelming. Super light and didn't last long on the palate. Taste disappeared immediately
just finished a bottle of Corryvreckan, and I think that is now my favorite peated whiskey within my price range. I also just bought a bottle of Bunnahabain Ceobanach, which is supposed to be their heavily peated version. I haven't opened it up yet, have you guys reviewed it before?
If you like Peat Monster, you'll likely dig their Flaming Heart blend. Roughly 30% of the stuff is 30 year old Caol Ila. Runs about $125-150 a bottle though.
You can request the age on their website and they will send you an email with all the age details.
conor strang I actually did this when I bought one of their King St. Really cool!
They're really changing the game and good for them....and US! :-)
Hoping I can find this bottle somewhere soon..would absolutely love this.
I'm loving this! I'm a huge peat fan. Love Laphroaig and Lagavulin. Can't wait to try this one.
You're gonna really like this bottle! :-)
Am glad you like this because it's one of my favorites only exceeded recently by Big Peat.
It's a damn good bottle! Noticed they labeling/packaging changed as we saw a bottle in a new liquor store here and it was completely different looking....

How does Peat Monster compare to Laphroaig 10 or Quarter Cask? Have you guys ever given a 4?

Thanks a lot for the feedback Mark.
Hey, thanks for catching the live stream last night! That was fun!!
It was. Will definitely do it again!
Any chance you fellas can review the Benromach 10 or 15? I hear these are really good, especially for the price.
Have to find them first...

I most certainly will Mark!
What's a good 4 scotch then?
I like this more than lagavulin 16 is there something wrong with me?
I wouldn't go so far as to say "wrong".. LOL! When it comes to what whisky you like or even how you like to drink it, you're NEVER wrong! ;-) Cheers & HNY! ~Mark
@@Scotch4Dummies thanks for the lift up I was looking for a therapist Lol. Thanks, happy new year for you and the rest of the gang!

Shawn, I am but one guy, but when I try one I will let you know. I now have 60 bottles and not one is a compass box. It could be awhile.
60 bottles....we really need to take a road trip!~Mark

Awesome review guys. I really liked this one. Definitely not as peaty as I thought it would be... for being called the "Peat Monster".
+The Malted Man Cave It is more approachable than the name implies. I think it’s a good everyday glass and well worth the price.
- Shawn
+The Malted Man Cave It is my favorite Compass Box right now. We will see what they come up with soon. ~Andrew
Have you tried the Enlightenment yet? It is magical...but I really like Clynelish which is a huge component in it.
Flaming heart is also really nice.
Yes, that one was mentioned on last nights live stream....We'll be checking that one out soon, I'm sure!

“Blended Malt “Guys , not Just Blended scotch, very important to point there is no grains in it just malted barely
They specified that in the review
I got some old stock of this for $39.
$39? At that price I think we'd be picking up a case! But we are all pretty fond of some good ol' peat!
I gotta be honest, I love peaty whiskeys.... this was very underwhelming. Super light and didn't last long on the palate. Taste disappeared immediately
That's fair! I rather enjoyed it and am actually looking to pick up a bottle for the home front. What's your go to peat bottle? ~Mark
