The Pendle Witch Trials (1612) - It All Began With .. Alizon Device

- The Pendle Witch trials of 1612 is perhaps the most well known of all witch trials throughout the world, and it all began because of a chance encounter one day back on the 18th March 1612, when a young girl by the name of Alizon (Alison) Device was making her way to the Forest of Trawden.
Meeting a man by the name of John Law, what transpired that day would forever echo in the shadows that lie directly underneath the imposing Pendle Hill. Unwittingly, Alizon would set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately not only cost her own life, but that of many more people.
This is the story of how the Pendle Witch trials of 1612 began.

King James was obsessed by Witchcraft and Roger Nowel was advancing his career.....
Jack Straw could have given them a pardon but declined.....A bloke at the pit lived on Malkin Tower in the 70's ...great vid
Hi you two! Wow this story has a lot more to it than what I have heard! Yes, please come back with more information! I was always interested in old crime stories! You tell them so well!
I think the basis of all the various witch trials was mainly things like jealousy, spite and just plain hatred of neighbours.
@@janettemccubbin8246 healing knowledge to they knew the old ways
Sorry to comment again, but this was brilliant and I hope one day you walk over Whalley Nab and into the village of Whalley, there is so much history, I spent my childhood walking over the Nab, around Sabden, Clitheroe, Padiham, Reed, Pendle Hill, Barley, Billington, around Brockhall and many other places in that area, somehow you feel the past, the history, it just draws you in.
There are loads of stories to cover in those places. Im surprised by how many 'ghost' stories especially! We will cover more for sure and try and find some not-so-well known ones.
For over 30 years I lived in the shadow of Pendle- Burnley, Blackburn, Trawden and Nelson and Blacko. In those days I never lived in one area more than 7 years, itchy feet? I'm not far from there now in the Ribble Valley area. It's said the pub called The Sun not far away has 5 ghosts! There's said to be Boggart under a stone near the former White Bull Pub in Longridge on Higher Road.
I’ve always found the Pendle witch trials interesting and your video definitely didn’t disappoint! Would love to see you cover the stories of each person in more depth. Another fantastic video, well done to both of you
We have spent a couple of hours this evening delving into one of the 'accused', that of the Padiham witch, Margaret Pearson. She had a, let's say, varied life and I think we may be able to do something with her story.
This is the most accurate version of the Pendle Witch story I've ever heard. I've lived in Pendle for 40 + years (although I'm originally from Rossendale) and I've heard some ridiculous versions of the story (mostly on YT) so thanks for doing the research and for being accurate.
P.S. Jennet Device who gave evidence at the trial was 9 years old (not 16). Normally her evidence would not have been accepted in court because of her age but the king (James) who was known to be paranoid about witchcraft had given permission for children to give evidence in cases involving witchcraft. Apart from that you got everything right, so well done 🙂
Great video Chris and Vicky, I dread to think what it must of been like back in those day. Living not far from Pendle and all of its history I have heard lots of stories of the Pendle Witches a truly fascinating yet scary tale of our past.
I could live in that Abandoned Cottage behind you andVickie..lovely surroundings..❤
Wow 😲 what an interesting story going back so many years. So many people were executed back then. Alice Device probably at the time didn't realise what she had done would cause such an uproar within the community. Thanks Chris and Vicky for another interesting video. 👍👍👍
Alice may have looked at that dog and, to spite the old Mr Law, asked the dog what to do. Of course she heard nothing, but the old guy didn’t need to hear, only take her as really hearing the dog.
Poverty does terrible things. We all know what can be found and how even family members can point fingers, shift blame, etc. Desperation on both sides wrought an event that we hope to never see again. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed 😉
Absolutely fascinating story xx Lancashire has some amazing countryside views xx watching from Oxfordshire
I love the song “oh Pendle oh Pendle”
Goosebumps x
You have us curious so will try and find it now on UA-cam 🤗
Living in Lancaster I have always been fascinated by the tragic tales of the Pendle Witches
A really interesting video & look forward to more individual stories
Thank you both 👍🏻
I've always liked watching other people's videos on UA-cam on this subject but was also kind-of put off covering it because it's such a big story. This is why we chose to talk about Alizon to begin with and see what reactions this video got. Luckily, do far people seem to be liking it.
Hi again, how do I go about sending you a private message? It's nothing bad 😅, its just regarding a video you did at an abandoned asylum.
@@DaysofHorrorI’m not sure how to send private messages on here if you have an email address I can send you a message
I’ve sent you a message through your website 👍🏻
I was just about to say, I've added our email address in the 'about' section here on UA-cam. But I'll check the email you've sent now and reply to you. @@lunevalleyparanormal
I have heard of the pendle witch story before , fascinating, however you tell it so well and captivate us with interest . Enjoyed the video
Many thanks Sue. We are back on a true crime story over in Burnley this weekend. Followed by, I think, another Pendle story 😉
Very interesting and well put together video Chris and Vicky, and great to see the old farmhouse being restored, i found it to be a very active building. Hope to meet up in the not to distant future. And thanks for the video 🌚🖤💀👀🕷️🎥⚰️🧹🧙♀️👻
I understand that Alizon Device (Davies) was so traumatised by events that she made a full confession. It seems that John Law aka 'Fat Jack' was overweight, carried a heavy pack, and was probably frightened of Alizon knowing her to be a witch and was in a hurry to get away from her. All combining to cause what appears to have been a stroke.
He certainly did have one, plus it was a hot day. I have suffered with minor strokes and know full well they really are terrifying to experience.
This was fantastic! I’m watching again 🧙♀️🖤
Thanks Aimee! We should plan a Pendle night visit and see what occurs
@@DaysofHorror I’m down for that! I reckon the ladies will come aswell 🧙♀️
Very interesting I am a direct descendent of 2 witches hung in Salem Mass, at there witch trials.
❤
Wow
I’m so sorry for your ancestral loss x ❤
Superb video Vicki and Chris.
Loved this, always been hooked on the Pendle Witches story. Great location and possible discovery of the tower as well! The area alone looks very spooky and it definitely has that strange vibe. Looking forward to the next video and would love to hear more about Alice Nutter one day.
Thanks Storm. Alice Nutter is a big story from recollection but defo worth looking into 😀
According to Robert Neil's 'Mist Over Pendle' she was a poisoner. Conjectural, of course.
Loved it. Came from Burnley and was brought up with this story. ❤❤❤
Many sincere thanks Angela. I have to admit, this is close to being my favourite video we have done so far. I just love being in Pendle and the stories that surround those areas. Obviously the Pendle witches will always be the number one story, but there are some other, less known ones, we are currently looking into. Thanks for watching and commenting, we always love it when people take the time to get involved and share their thoughts on these videos and the stories.
Another gem. On a subject close to my heart. Back in the day, people persecuted for allegedly being a witch were probably very ordinary people who knew about plants and the healing properties of them. To accuse someone of witchcraft came from jealousy and fear. Just look at the Witchfinder General. The biggest con man at the time. It`s interesting to know that no one in England was burnt for witchcraft. They could be burnt for heresy but not for being a witch.
Loved the video Chris and Vicky. Would like to see more videos of the Pendle witches.
There is loads more to cover. If people aren't bored of it, we will for sure cover more on this subject.
@@DaysofHorror Will look forward to it Chris.
This was brilliant. Story well told.
Main thanks Iain. I spotted one little mistake but hopefully it doesn't impact it too much. I wrongly said that it was John (Law) who made his way back (to where Law had met Alizon), but I should have said his son, Abraham.
I believe I am related to the ancient Clifton family. I am doing a deep dive on the area. Excellent video. Thank you.
Lucky enough to live a short distance from that beautiful landscape, it certainly carries its history, I've heard there was also another possible Malkin Tower site further down near Sabden
Why does that sound familiar 🤔 Someone else, not sure who now, but im sure someone else has said the same about Malkin Tower. You have me curious now so I'm going to look into it again. I love Pendle and the surroundings and the whole history contained in the small villages such as Barley and Downham.
Superb Chris and Vicky...well done ✔️ 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Great Thumbnail...Will have to watch this video in full tomorrow ..I am sure it will be excellent 😊😊
Cheers pal. We use a combination of AI for an idea, then Photoshop just to edit and touch up a few things.
@DaysofHorror very professional 👏 👌 👍 🙌 😀
The fear back then. 😢
It must have been horrendous. I mean, poor families scavenging just to live, then being accused of crimes, let's be honest, they were not committing, it's just a sad story.
@@DaysofHorror yes, sad truth
😢
Interesting Story ..Thans again ❤
Great content and beautifully presented thanks for the upload watching from Melbourne Australia
Enjoyed this video and beautiful countryside. One doesn't even need to be there to feel the history..I certainly can..and, the sadness. The music is perfect for this subject. Will check out your paranormal outing of this area next. 😊
Many thanks, Susan. The paranormal one was a bit of a damp letdown. The rain spoilt what could have been an even better evening.
@@DaysofHorror well at least you tried. I'm sure there will be many more opportunities to explore interesting places 😊
Superb Video Chris and Vicky...excellent research, collation, delivery and narration..superb standard as always.. gunna give your Channel a shout out in my next video. .people need to know about your awesome Channel. Stay safe both..much love and continued success with your awesome Channel 😊😊😊😊
Many thanks for that. And as I say, when your next over here let us know and we can do something together.or when I'm near you, again, we can do something.
@DaysofHorror 4 sure...superb narrative
Brilliant video, and incredibly informative. I knew none of that history at all. Just a quick question, how has your friend concluded the tower was in the field? What evidence had he found?
Looking forward to seeing what you caught on camera too...do we hear the scream? Best wishes 😊
It's just a theory he has from all accounts. From what I gather, he has done some digging but not enough to confirm one way or another if there is anything there to say it is Malkin Tower. Still interesting all the same. He has written a book on this, but I'll have to try and find a link to it where people can purchase a copy.
Brilliant video I've had a story idea about pendle for quite a while it's a ghost story but with horror elements it's inspired by hereditary I can't wait to do loads of research ❤
Oh wow! You will have to do it but promise to keep us uptodate with it! We love a good ghost story and especially more so if its in our neck of the woods. You will also have your hands full with the research as its pretty much endless. Good luck with the story but please keep us uptodate with it.
@@DaysofHorror I will ☺️
Loved this thanks guys, the back stories would be great ❤
Many thanks Amanda. There will be more knowledgeable people when it comes to this tragic story, and we welcome their feedback as doing other back stories would be an amazing, if not challenging thing to do 👍
Great story had heard about it reminded me of the story of witchcraft going on near where i used to live obviously back in them times it's a nature park now
I've really enjoyed watching your new videos today I hope you do more like this one lol x😊❤
Thanks Donna. From the chat during the premier, people seem interested jonnus covering more of this tragic story.
❤❤
I love the Pendle witches, my family come from the area and highly likely to have been in the area in that time period. I have spent a long time researching them and have read Thomas Potts report in full. There is so much conflicting evidence and research into the location of Malkin Towers, some say it's near Malkin farm as it's still named today and others think it's the home that was uncovered when Black lake was drained. The trail of the witches was not the biggest or the first but it was the best recorded thanks or Thomas Potts. which is why it's so well known, for those interested in the back history you need to look towards Europe and the witch killings in Europe - the witch histeria in the UK was started by King James and his publication of the king James bible. The trial of the withes was more to do with Jennett Device who was about 9 years old and taken in by Nowell when her family (grandmother Demdike, Mother Elizabeth, Brother James and Sister Alizon) were locked up and then she gave evidence against all as being witches and is thought to have been fed the information by Nowell who wanted the conviction for his career and be in good favour with the King.
Its such a fascinating subject isn't it. To be honest, I didn't realise just how big a story it is in terms of all the individual stories until I looked at how it all began. Malkin Tower interests me too. When we were contacted last week and given some information on the area we visited, we just had to go and take a look. I think it will always be a struggle to pinpoint the exact location as to where it was, but well worth visiting these places anyway.
They weren't witches
Great video. I enjoyed watching this thanks 🥰 x
Fantastic scenery, very interesting and well presented 😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching
Nice One 👍 Peace ✌️ be With You
Thank you John 👍
Its a really well done video on the story, thank you 😊
Many thanks for watching :-) The Pendle Witch story is massive and we only scratched the surface. We do intend to look deeper into it though and cover the stories of some of the individuals that form the basis of the whole saga.
Nicely done guy's♥
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed 😊
Thank you 😊
Great video Chris and Vickey. I think it needs a more in depth approach to the people involved. It was a very superstitious period not just in witchcraft but in religion as well. During this period practising Catholics were persecuted as well. It's no wonder families pointed the finger. In many ways I feel that witchcraft and religion are linked in this period of history.
I just saw some old Hammer movies about Witches , it's amazing how they got many things right, for 1960 s fast made horror movies.
I used to love Hammer movies. Especially the Dracula films 👍
I think Jennet Device was about nine years old. Ironically, perhaps, she was accused of being a witch herself about twenty years later.
❤
Love this subject of the Pendle witches… more videos would be great!! Thank you!
We didn't want to start going into the other 'victims' during this video as the story would take forever to tell. Each person has their own tale to tell and I think they need retelling individually in their own videos. I just wanted to start at the beginning and how the trials came to be. I know people have done this many, many times before on UA-cam, but we hadn't covered it ourselves until now. I'm glad we have.
@@DaysofHorror I’ve seen a few on this subject - this was the best in my opinion. Others have tried to capture the history all in one video & I agree. It doesn’t work well. I’d much rather have a detailed individual video like you’ve done here. Looking forward to watching more. Thank you from Canada! 🇨🇦
Many thanks Gabriel. Means a lot that. Its a sad story, like many others we have already covered. But it seems people do like it nevertheless and we have been asked by a few people now to do more on this subject, so its something we will most certainly be doing.
Oh my today is August 19 th four hundred years later an I just happen to watch this . Hanging for being a witch or someone thinks you are That's sad
It was a horrific period in time, and I cannot even imagine how terrified people were back then, especially the women.
It's horrific 😮
Actually, The Witchcraft Act of 1542 was England's first witchcraft law, enacted during Henry VIII's reign.
Great video Chris and vickie. I don't believe they was witches maybe a little eccentric for 1612 i would love to visit pendle hill but unfortunately don't think that will happen so im enjoying you telling the story 😊
Im with you on this, in that the women involved where just living off the land, using nature to make remedies and the like. They were targetted out of false beliefs and suffered the ultimate punishment. Such a sad story all round.
@@DaysofHorror yes definitely a sad story and one I'm very interested in. If only mary the 1st or Elizabeth the 1st had a child then James wouldn't of become king and all them poor ladies and gentlemen would most likely of been safe to live there life's
I agree.
They weren't witches they were healers with a college of healing plants.
And if it wasn't for them
We mite not have the means of today's medicine's.
I saw a documentary a while back and on there they said that Malkin is an old word for slatern or s**t to it is s**t tower. I don’t know if this is true but it is certainly food for thought
This time of the year, we love anything we can find on the Pendle Witches. There is usually a few new videos on UA-cam and we will end up watching them all 😆
The ducking stool.
hello i was born in Burnley i will watch the video
Many thanks Ian 😀

Great video. However it is well documented that it was illegal under English law to extract confession through active torture for witchcraft. The English of his period were nothing if not litigious so it would be highly unlikely that thumbscrews etc. Were employed.
I live in Chester.
Witches here were tried by being set into a barrel and pushed into the Dee.
If they died, they were innocent, they got burned by the stake!
No win 😢
Hi new sub here
Hi Dee, many thanks for joining our little community here at Days of Horror. 😃
If the two aged women of the families were in their eighties then that is already unnatural for the period. They also believed they had powers. So it's a fair cop really.
We haven't advanced much since then .
We're still blaming and having family break ups and jealous feuds with nabours.
Or religious accusations..
How sad.
