Here's our reaction to FALLOUT s01e01!
Erika and I are going into this one completely blind. We barely play video games and only found out it was based on a game right before we watched it. So -- we'll probably be missing A LOT of references haha.
But the world has been talking about FALLOUT, and for good reason! We love the world-building and the storyline. It's fun, fast-paced -- and we can't wait to see even more.

I wrote this for context since the show doesn’t explain the historical background: The Fallout universe consists of an alternate timeline that split from our own timeline after WW2. The simple word to describe this setting is ‘retrofuturism’. A time where the transistor was never invented and vacuum tubes continued being used. Atomic power was fully-embraced as a limitless source of power and thus became used in every manner, from nuclear-powered cars to robots, to simple kitchen equipment.
Historical context for better understanding of the intro: The beginning of the show is set in October 23rd 2077, the day the Great War happened which is the catalyst of the Fallout universe. But let’s go back a few years. By 2052, important resources such as petroleum and uranium became scarce and so the Resource Wars began between the European Commonwealth and the various Arab nations in the Middle East. Other nations quickly followed suit such as the US declaring war on Mexico and annexing Canada into its territory for easier access to Alaska’s oil fields, in case of a land invasion done by China (Side note: In the Fallout universe, the main world players are the US and China; the USSR became a weaker nation after WW2 in this timeline). After decades of fighting throughout the world, it was deemed that Alaska became the last place left on earth for petroleum extraction. And so in January 2066, China invaded Alaska, starting the Sino-American War, which would eventually end with the Liberation of Anchorage and thus, an American victory by the start of 2077. After a couple months of relative peace, on October 23rd of 2077, the Great War began (the beginning of the show happens here). In only 2 hours, every superpower in possession of nuclear weapons began bombing each other, leaving nothing but destruction and a devastating nuclear winter that will last for decades to come.

As somebody who is sunk a lot of their personal time into the Fallout franchise, I don't think I have ever seen a better description of what the pre-war was like and the events leading up to the Great War. This is probably one of the best summaries I have ever read.

the universe is based on all "retro futurism" book in 1950's, the split happen when they invented nuclear powered everything instead of us inventing transistor and microchip , that is why the technology still had vaccum tube, bulky but they can make robot because of the nuclear

Yeah it is largely what scifi writers of the 1940s and 1950s thought the future would look like.
The fact that you guys went in completely blind made this reaction video a gem to watch.
14:50 the thing the main character just injected into themselves was a stimpak they are a item in the game that uses a mix of drugs and stem cells to instantly heal fatal wounds.
Also aspirant Dane’s actor uses he/ they pronouns and it is assumed that aspirant Dane is trans in universe

As much as i love seeing game fans react its equally as intriguing to see you guys react!
Also, don't worry about not knowing that much about the games, the franchise, or the lore. This is an original story set in the timeline of that world after all of the games so you're getting a unique look into the world of Fallout and it's told in a way that even non-fans can sort of understand what's going on. It's not going to Mandalorian season 2 you with a bunch of lore details and references you won't understand without context. It's pretty cut and dry...of course, for us in the know there's a lot of issues, debate, and questions but, that's for us to worry and nerd out over.
I'm interested to see how you guys who haven't played the game before view the show. I think it works great without playing the games, but if you have it definitely adds alot. You get all hyped up about seeing all the guns, medicine, items, animations and stuff from the game that makes the show amazing for players.

This is Atom Punk. Similar to Steam Punk, this is the future that people in the past dreamed of, but in this case the nuclear era of the early 1950s rather than the early steam engine era. Because those people were unaware of some technology that exists today, its not present in this alternate future.

When watching this series, don't apply real world logic to things that you see but video game logic instead. For instance, when Lucy pulled out the knife and used the "stimpack" in the first-aid kit to heal herself, or the Santa Monica pier still mostly standing after 219 years, etc.

in the uk marrying cousins IS legal, cousins are deemed far enough way for safe genetics. yeah its not ethically good, but consider that you have a very limtied gene pool in a closed enviroment, so cousins wouldnt be so bad genetically to breed with, better than siblings

Huh? it is legal in almost every country. As it would take hundreds of years of only marrying close cousins for negative genetic effects to surface, if they ever do (Cleopatra for example was part of a family that married close cousins for hundreds of years). And the US is full of big stars that have married their cousins, Elvis being one of them. But saying that, it is still very much frowned upon in most developed countries.

As another fan of the games, I would say that FO3, FO New Vegas or FO4 are the best entry points for new casual players.
But if you don't mind old games, and you can get them to run. Then FO1, FO2 and the OG Wasteland from 1988, are all great games with great stories!

But it is kinda an expansion of Fallout 3, but instead of the D.C. area, it takes place in California and Nevada, 4 years later.

Ehat you see when theyre going to the main entrance door is only vault 33, it has many floors usually about 12 floors deep. Its not other vaults. Lol its a common mistake if you dont know anything about the vaults and fallout lore.
The Vaults in this show have to be much smaller than normal vaults since inbreeding is such an issue, not to mention that you can bloody walk 100metres to other (at least 2) vaults

Raiders in the game are lawless, do anything to survive, murder, steal, enslave, use drugs, and completely immoral. Typically seen with tattoos, spikey hair and crude, custom made weapons and armor.

One point I am not clear on is if Lucy, who was born in the vault, and all of the rest of the residents of Vault 33 has been in the vault for 219 years with no idea of what is on the surface...then how does Lucy know about "Raiders?"
She is probably not referring to them as raiders specifically as a group so to speak but that’s just the adjective she applied to the group who infiltrated Vault 33 knowing they aren’t from Vault 32 but from the surface. In my view she just extrapolated information based on the circumstances. i.e. people who are not from vault 32 but the surface, have vault 32 clothes, are pretending to be vault dwellers, and shows signs of being relatively uncivilized, and are beginning to “raid” the vault = Raiders.
They raided the vault, theyre raiders. Its not hard to put together.
It’s pretty interchangeable with the word “bandit”. It’s what the game calls them so it’s just that. No deeper meaning needed
