I was there in 1973 and I was also there in 1977, but I love the show in 73. I was 20 years old went with four cousins in my little Toyota that only is seat four but there was five of us we had heard that people were camping out by the stadium. Our plan was to leave at five in the morning but instead we left that midnight. I have some great pictures of the band.🎸✌🏽 will never forget that show. Thank you, Mr. Bill Graham.

I always thought '73 was the peak of the band, Robert's voice was still working, Jimmy wasn't messing with the H, and Bonzo kept the partying under control. JPJ was always a good boy. It seems, come '75, things start getting sloppy. Thank You JCM for another fine job!

I wouldn't say sloppy but the pressure grew TOO big to handle with the old methods for sure. 1973 was really the instrumental peak, no question. The way they worked out the jam sections and Robert's on stage persona captivating crowds across the world, something special indeed. I would say Europe and North America 1973 are the absolute zenith of what the band could do IMPROV wise. But 1975-1980 do feature better rhythm work overall, in the composition side of things. Jose, thanks for the video both videos the one you did of Santana and the one you did a Led Zeppelin got to see Santana in 1969. I was 15 years old a few months before he he hit Woodstock. The Woodstock band was amazing. They were very tight by 69. I had that zeppelins First album and four years later in 73 me and my cousin purchased tickets to go see zeppelin in San Francisco some great music came out of San Francisco and down south lower Canyon also has some great bands the late 60s and 70s were great years were music the best🎸✌🏽

I have heard the boot of this show and the band brings it hard. I forgot that the Tubes & Lee Michaels played before Zep's set. What an amazing show, three really great bands in SF.

Most stuff I see on youtube about Zeppelin is just a rehash of stuff that has already been done to death. Your videos have fresh stories and facts about the band I have never heard anywhere else. You must do a ridiculous amount of research and it is totally appreciated! You are really great at this!
I take my time for research because i was also tired of watching the same rehash stories...my OCD kicked in hard when i saw a Photograph that didn't match the time period somebody was talking about hehe. So yes, i am obsessed and i thank you very much for watching and subscribing if you haven't!

I’ve an old vinyl copy of this show, called “Persistance”. It’s my favorite Zeppelin bootleg! The guys were particularly adventurous that day, …not sure if it was because it was the odd daytime setting, or like the bootleg title, running into equipment problems and such, caused them to focus more than usual, as they “persisted” against the odds Wonderful show, and you captured its vibe beautifully Jose! I always look forward to your videos Jose, great work as always!
I was there and back then you weren't searched and my buddies and I were drinking brandy shots and passing dubies around and I sat down during Lee Michael's set and when Zeppelin hit the stage I got up and I was so sunburned I couldn't open my eyes all the way. It was still awesom . I also saw a guy break his leg trying to sneak in. Good times

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories --- Jose's --- didbyou happen to see the video that was uploaded about a week ago of a Zeppelin cover band that played a cover of No Quarter at the Whiskey A Go Go? They were a tribute band, older guys, great costumes that were copying the clothes worn for the Madison Sq Garden / Song Remains The Same concert footage. They were pretty good. I tend to find most tribute bands a little goofy. Not cover bands, but tribute bands where they wear costumes and wigs and try to look the part as well as play the music. But these guys did a really good job musically and surprisingly looked okay for the most part. As a kid maybe around 10 or 12 years old I got to see the original Beatlenania here in LA and then saw it again a few months later with different actors/performers not the original Broadway cast like the first time. That was a pretty amazing show. Seeing them play in the various style and the music of each era. I hope you are well? We have Easter coming up pretty soon.

This was soooo atmospheric, I felt like I was there! 👏I just loved the way you went through highlights of the numbers along with your detailed and knowledgeable comments about each member's performance, flourishes and occasional flubs. I didn't know Jimmy traveled separate that day, wonder what happened there..... Photos from Kezar look atypical (like Sydney '72 ) as it's daylight. Zeppelin always seemed much more like creatures of the night, but that didn't stop Plant and Bonham in particular from putting in a great show here. I just adore Bonzo's "and a fooooour ' from the start of The Ocean, he seemed to be quite playful in this gig. It's funny you mentioned the Cough. I saw some yt comments saying it was Plant, but being a Bonzette and having heard a fair few studio outtakes (that brief Four Sticks Alternate take for example) I noticed he was prone to coughing and wondered if it was in fact him while he and Plant were singing here.

Led Zeppelin did play at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1971. Also, Roy Harper did not open, he was thrust in unexpectedly between Lee Michaels and Zeppelin’s sets to help cover the delay.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories i'd never heard that. i love roy harper. but the second show {the one where the master tapes and acetate were thrown into the bay when, ahem, someone got paranoid) is quite phenomenal. i liken those two shows with copenhagen 79. the first show is great but the sound is a bit flat and the second show is just a bit better with better sound. but the ambience of the second show berkeley might be my favorite of al their audience tapes. oh, for bragging rights i saw Return to Forever there at berkeley community center when they toured in 1983. needless to say that was jaw dropping in and of itself.

You know...the drum solo was definitely not as inspired. I revisited the whole thing, taking careful notes and you can tell when Bonham will just cruise in autopilot when he is not feeling it on the "drum engine" part at the beginning. I think he was definitely dehydrated from partying on his birthday and the day after. Rockstars are not made for Daylight shows, i insist haha. The drum solo was designed so the others could go take a toke...or a smoke..or go indulge in a little taste of coke. Same with the others with their solo spots. They were designed for the others to catch a breather
The more episodes I watch, the more amazed I am at the size & scope of Led Zeppelin. Studio recordings & live bootlegs really show how awesome they were & human too. The balls it takes to improvise every night is beyond incredible musicians. They made so many of their songs even more epic in concert. Nobody remembers Zeppelin concerts, the whole experience of the show was too overwhelming & the drugs & booze were a plenty!!!! 😎
If you listen to what Robert Plant says about Bill Graham, it was true until the day he died. We in the Bay Area we’re so fortunate to have Bill Graham. Was there anywhere else in the world that had as many shows of all sizes, did anyone have as many shows like the Day On The Green series every summer. Other places got big multi-line-up shows. But did anywhere have as many? We were blessed to have him.
Absolutely. Mr. Graham did a lot for the community and the rock scene. Interesting he closed the Fillmore just as the dolar started to lose its buying power. To say he was smart with money is an understatement!
And. The Grateful Dead. Jose, I have no idea if you are into the dead but the early fillmore shows in 68 69 to the late 70s....blistering...and Jerry...one of the true masters.
I was in line to see the who at the cow palace in a downpour and the line was around the block and here comes Bill walking the line shaking our hands and apologizing about the wait and the rain . I gained a lot of respect for him that day. Its a bit ironic what would happen in 77 with Zep
totally. the dead's garage psych of 66-68 was so unbelievably raw, fresh, and exciting! you'd have never guessed they'd suddenly bust out three americana/country rural records of immense pastoral beauty. followed by my favorite transitional album by them, blues for A. once you can grok their incredible virtuosity, i like to then turn folks on to the live shows. back in the day, it was the other way around. it took me years to appreciate their studio stuff. i adore it now (i'm 61). yeah, we gotta get Jose into them through one of the many windows available to music lovers. remember, the dead tricked people into liking country music. then tricked them into liking jazz and disco. :) i tjhink jose would really appreciate jerry 69-81, especially. or i am just projecting! but truly i'd love his take in bobby's rhythm guitar. hey jose! if you're reading this. watch "sunshine daydream". a short doco on the dead live in eugene, oregon in 1972 and everyone is melting on owsly. it's fantastic.
Hey Matt, glad you joined us on the chat. This show tends to be overlooked for some reason, i think the old bootleg source contributed to that. Daylight didn't really helped them. I mean Moby Dick was not that inspired but....overall Bonzo carried them to greateness. The 77% humidity and definitely...partying on May 31st + Jun 1st had something to do with it hahahahha...i can only imagine having to wake these guys up and getting them on a plane to San Francisco. Hey JCM, thanks for another great episode. I’m reading the comments, lots of people at the show or know people who were. I’m from the Bay Area as well, and was just driving by Kezar Stadium with a friend who was getting a little annoyed about how I kept talking about Zeppelin playing there in ‘73 rather than helping to find a parking space 😂 Kezar in case you didn’t know is at the end of Haight Street, yes just a few blocks from the corner of Haight/Ashbury which we walked by that day on our hang day there. I’ve always loved the bootleg from that show, haven’t heard it in a while. 🤔
Wow this one was interesting, I have heard pretty much most Zeppelin bootlegs, but I've never heard anything from this show before. This WAS the Zeppelin show to see, they somehow managed to get really spontaneous and adventurous and hold it together really tight.....I would give almost anything to travel back in time to see this show!! Pages guitar sound!! Insane!! Pages playing was again, on point but at the same time he was really pushing it into other dimensions, Plant was sounding the best I've heard from '73, Jones, well, hes Jonesy.....Bonzo, agressive but at the same time carefully considered in his playing that night....Thanks for putting this one together JCM, I have often looked at the photos from this show and wondered what it was actually like......well, there it is!!
Kev imagine the dehydration that day for them hehe. Yes this show is sometimes lost in time, but worth revisiting. I find all these shows fascinating knowing how the versions evolved into what was captured on The Song Remains The Same you know? These concert photos yeah, are definitely TIMELESS pieces of art!
Kev, I was at this show & unlike most l actually remember it well. It was a little early in the day for me to party & I was there for the music. Your insights as to how they played are mostly spot on. Especially about Plants vocals, likely the best & last time he sounded so good with Zep. Must’ve been the salt air 🎤🎼🎤
Thank you so much for this insight JCM. I've always been kinda fascinated by the Kezar show due to my poster of Plant with bottle of beer and cigarette in one hand, a white dove in the other. Still have the poster, although it now lies inside a cardboard tube with all my other posters( mainly of Page). I used to study that poster and the sea of the slightly out of focus audience faces, wondering what it must have been like to have been there. This documentary helped it giving me a taste off that fascinating concert. Many, many thanks, your the best. 👍

I was a kid then and at this concert. It was a horrible wait and I don’t remember Graham using the “double neck guitar” excuse, but he used the same excuse in ‘77 in Oakland when they again delayed due to the backstage fight. That show sucked, but Kezar was great, and the classic LZ era.I thought I paid $5.00. an extravagant price then. Says here $6.

To this day and back then, Zeppelin personified cool; every guy wanted to be them and every girl wanted to be with them. Plant's picture with the dove is off the charts; ,cigarette and beer in one hand and a white dove in the other; man, that's the definition of cool!!
I think he really needed another guitarist with him. His multi-tracking on the records almost necesitates this. He said the songs never sounded better than when he had The Black Crowes backing him.

Prior to the buzzing sound heard in this video there was a loud, ear piercing feedback sound at the very end of Rain Song. That's what Plant was apologizing for.
There was a feedback sound yes. But the buzzing sound definitely sounds like a signal too because Plant does state this at the beginning of the equipment not working properly. Yhe Tubes had only been together for a little over a year and were two years away from releasing their debut album , so no wonder Graham wasn't thrilled to have them on a bill with Zeppelin. However, he came to love the group over the next few years and booked them regularly at Winterland and other West Coast venues.
The Tubes certainly evolved to a very respectable place within new wave and art pop. This research made me wanna do a deep dive on them, they followed the line of The Mothers and Zappa. Thanks for watching!
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories They made some great music while together, but the one song that stands out is, "White Punks on Dope." It's a 7 minute epic that borders on prog with all of its complex changes. I'm not a musician, so I can't analyze it from a musical standpoint like you, but there's a lot going on in that seven minutes that required better than average technical skills.
I am a music fan, every band i come across i put mt listener hat on so trust me it sounds exciting! I leave the musician for later. If i like it as a listener then its good! I will check this out
The famous two-record set called Persistence, was my introduction to this gig…back in the middle eighties. It is a grossly edited, abbreviated offering of this gigantic ‘73 gig. Moby Dick is not included on that set and through the years I’ve heard the rumor that a legendary drum solo was offered by Bonzo but it hadn’t surfaced as of yet. FF thirty years and this show has been reconstructed top to bottom by the Zeppelin audiophiles - including MD! At one point during John’s tympani part, he’s doing triplets on his kick drum, (included here!) I’m trying to visualize this as I hear it - it’s just incredible to listen to! What’s even more incredible is: the gig on the following night in L.A.! These guys must’ve been burned out and drained of energy but…that gig at the Forum the following night is in my opinion THE highlight of the entire first leg! The energy is just overflowing…and I hope we get a segment on it. Thank you Jose for this surprise video! Excellent detective work, as usual.

Moby Dick was not as inspired as others, i have to say that, but still i enjoyed what Bonzo did on the Tympani, quite experimental. Hi Jose. Yes…the tape speed on the make up June 3 gig did vary. I so wish Mike the Mic captured this gig. I’m not fully certain though that tape deck technology was as good as it was in ‘73. It seemed that by ‘77 and with the addition of his Nakamichi equipment, things got better by then, anyway. Check the channel: Led Zeppelin Boots for the best and most complete version of the 6-3 show. They do Goin’ Down during the WLL medley! They really delivered that night for the LA faithful. The explosion at the end of WLL clips the recorder mic out! Just wonderful! Robert really burned his voice by now and it still amazes me that he actually went on stage, for the next gig on July 6 at Chicago. The 3 wk. respite I’m sure was good for them…but when they returned for the July run Robert couldn’t barely sing. Listen to the Chicago opener. He warmed up by the Detroit gigs though. The rest of July they turned in some awesome shows…along with the final vestiges of Robert’s original voice. In many ways for them, it was over by now.
I've always loved this 6/2/73 concert and I like the audience recording even better than the partial soundboard recording. I think it actually sounds better. Neal Schon posted something on Twitter either in 2023 or maybe 2022 about this concert and being there. I think he said it was his first Led Zeppelin concert but I can't remember for sure. But he really enjoyed seeing at that 1973 show and made some comments about being in the audience at that show. And by the way, after seeing your video on the Santana and Buddy Miles 1972 album, I started looking for that one because I didn't have it. I picked it up for about $11 at an audio festival in Dallas last Saturday. I wanted to hear Neal's guitar playing at the Diamond Head Crater event and it did sound good. The whole record did! I didn't even know about this recording until seeing your video. So thank you! I always liked how the camera zoomed out in Dirty Harry after Clint Eastwood shot Scorpio in the leg with his 44 Magnum flipping him over on the football field. I thought that was real cool camera work as the camera zooms out in the foggy San Francisco stadium and the scene kind of fades away after the incident there in the movie. Hey Brian, first off, congrats on your Santana and Buddy Miles purchase, that MAKES ME happy!!! It's really a fantastic concert, Neal shreds there. That Dirty Harry scene, yes, a classic, i love all 5 movies from the series, Clint Eastwood will always be a bada$$. I can imagine Neal Schon being at Kezar since Santana toured in 1971 and he did have some free time in the early days of Journey who signed with Columbia until 1975. Thank you for watching!

And speaking of Neal, I bought an LP I had never had or heard last year when it was getting repressed. It was from a '70s funk type of singer named Betty Davis. I had no idea that on her self-titled debut album Neal Schon played on 4 (according to the credits on the back of the cover) out of the 8 tracks. I actually think he played on 6 them but I can't say for sure. This was in 1973 which would have put it right between Santana and Journey. It's a pretty cool sounding album too. Led Zeppelin had a show in between the Fillmore West and kezar show at the indoor Oakland coliseum to promote Led Zeppelin three album Bill Graham was also the promoter.
Great video! Jimmy page had too much fun at that hotel in L.A. As a band, they sure loved L.A. and all it’s offerings. Magical performances though! Ever see that one video of those shows, filmed from a fan up in the seats? You get a good feeling of being there and anticipating what will come.

Page's sketchy playing here was due to serious tendinitis and this is why there was a six week break afterwards, with the Madison Square Garden shows being postponed until mid-July: "It was a strained tendon, I had all manner of treatment and injections but nothing worked and it was fucked up for six weeks", he said in an interview featured in "Led Zeppelin in their own words", (Omnibus Press)
Their July Leg was better on the instrumentals. Now because they started to use THE STARSHIP in July, i think Robert handled the weather much better. Flying a Learjet is no game. Thank you very much for watching!

Recuerdo que otro concierto que me dio el mismo sentimiento fue el de el Bath Blues Festde 1969, en el que igual las fotos eran de día y tan vívidas que uno casi podía sentir que estaba ahí !! Si no me equivoco hace muy poco aparecieron imágenes en video filmadas profesionalmente nunca antes vistas de dicho festival que luego fueron sincronizadas por un youtuber con una muy buena grabación del concierto y el resultado es realmente electrizante y alucinante !! The problem i see with Mr. Graham is that he was just a promoter...and i say this with no disrespect. Peter Grant was the manager of THE SOURCE and also, CARED about his boys. Not just the money.
Jim may have been late because he and Lori were embroiled in a torrid relationship at this time - which makes me believe he wanted to get as much time in with her as possible before leaving for SF. Who knows, maybe I’m wrong but it was a crazy time with Bonzo’s Birthday gig a few nights’ prior and all. We couldn’t imagine the levels of unfettered hedonism that occurred back then.
This is a good theory man! Long time no read btw, hope you are doing well. Bonzo's birthday party could be but i mean they had a couple of days to rest or try to hahahah. To be young and a millionaire in 1973 LA....lucky men!
A friend of mine said at the beginning of a Led Zeppelin show there was a huge cloud of white smoke coming from the stage, then there flew out hundreds of white doves! Of course, he had indulged himself with a micro-dot! He said it was like speaking to God himself. Lol
Minute 9 shows a photo of Plant, among Bill Graham, the promoter, and Steve Weiss, the NY lawyer, a busy tough man... According to some testimonies, Steve Weiss was the business brains behind LZ, not Peter Grant. He supervised the Atlantic Records deal. Weiss came up with the 90/10 split, starting with Jimmy Hendrix - most of the deals available were 60 percent artist, 40 percent promoter. Weiss always gave the credit to “the Leds”, as he called them, but the guy was a genius and could squeeze every last nickel. Peter Grant fed off that - his hired gun pulled the trigger for him. Grant had a quite false reputation for being intimidating, but he wasn't... He was big. Steve Weiss was intimidating. Peter let Steve be the asshole. His father supposedly worked for Meyer Lansky. Many attributed his effortless move into music due to his business relationship with Vanilla Fudge’s manager, Phil Basile. Phil was a mob guy, according to Carmine Appice, Fudge’s drummer. Weiss not only was the mouthpiece, he provided the roadway into the executives. He managed to be respected by those guys, whether it was Ahmet or Mo Ostin or Jerry Greenberg. And he wasn't outrageous in his demands beyond possible. He was who really ran the LZ show for five years, 68' to 73', with a couple of assistants. That was all it was needed... that, and Richard Cole for tour entertainments, of course. Needless to say Swan Song and Steve's firm were all together in the same office. He held the power of Peter Grant and Led Zeppelin in America. Steve Weiss was also the guy who got everybody out of trouble, with presumed connections to DEA, FBI, CIA, private detectives... The contact presumably was intermediated by an ex-cop who was Steve Weiss’s mate. Not a single mention from Jimmy Page nor Robert Plant to Steve Weiss in their official autobiographies.

If history shows us something, is that time and time again, the most important people in business are usually nowhere to be found :)
Kind of looked like the white style clothing that guitarist extraordinaire John Mcclaughlin wore around that time(i.e. early 1970's 1973). The clothes Jimmy Page is wearing, for example.

I was there in 1973 and I was also there in 1977, but I love the show in 73. I was 20 years old went with four cousins in my little Toyota that only is seat four but there was five of us we had heard that people were camping out by the stadium. Our plan was to leave at five in the morning but instead we left that midnight. I have some great pictures of the band.🎸✌🏽 will never forget that show. Thank you, Mr. Bill Graham.

I always thought '73 was the peak of the band, Robert's voice was still working, Jimmy wasn't messing with the H, and Bonzo kept the partying under control. JPJ was always a good boy. It seems, come '75, things start getting sloppy.

I wouldn't say sloppy but the pressure grew TOO big to handle with the old methods for sure. 1973 was really the instrumental peak, no question. The way they worked out the jam sections and Robert's on stage persona captivating crowds across the world, something special indeed. I would say Europe and North America 1973 are the absolute zenith of what the band could do IMPROV wise. But 1975-1980 do feature better rhythm work overall, in the composition side of things. Jose, thanks for the video both videos the one you did of Santana and the one you did a Led Zeppelin got to see Santana in 1969. I was 15 years old a few months before he he hit Woodstock. The Woodstock band was amazing. They were very tight by 69. I had that zeppelins First album and four years later in 73 me and my cousin purchased tickets to go see zeppelin in San Francisco some great music came out of San Francisco and down south lower Canyon also has some great bands the late 60s and 70s were great years were music the best🎸✌🏽

Most stuff I see on youtube about Zeppelin is just a rehash of stuff that has already been done to death. Your videos have fresh stories and facts about the band I have never heard anywhere else. You must do a ridiculous amount of research and it is totally appreciated! You are really great at this!
I take my time for research because i was also tired of watching the same rehash stories...my OCD kicked in hard when i saw a Photograph that didn't match the time period somebody was talking about hehe. So yes, i am obsessed and i thank you very much for watching and subscribing if you haven't!

I’ve an old vinyl copy of this show, called “Persistance”. It’s my favorite Zeppelin bootleg! The guys were particularly adventurous that day, …not sure if it was because it was the odd daytime setting, or like the bootleg title, running into equipment problems and such, caused them to focus more than usual, as they “persisted” against the odds

I was there and back then you weren't searched and my buddies and I were drinking brandy shots and passing dubies around and I sat down during Lee Michael's set and when Zeppelin hit the stage I got up and I was so sunburned I couldn't open my eyes all the way. It was still awesom . I also saw a guy break his leg trying to sneak in. Good times
we came up from LA spur of the moment, dry. must have been far away from you, nobody was doing much toking or sharing any!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories --- Jose's --- didbyou happen to see the video that was uploaded about a week ago of a Zeppelin cover band that played a cover of No Quarter at the Whiskey A Go Go? They were a tribute band, older guys, great costumes that were copying the clothes worn for the Madison Sq Garden / Song Remains The Same concert footage. They were pretty good. I tend to find most tribute bands a little goofy. Not cover bands, but tribute bands where they wear costumes and wigs and try to look the part as well as play the music. But these guys did a really good job musically and surprisingly looked okay for the most part.
As a kid maybe around 10 or 12 years old I got to see the original Beatlenania here in LA and then saw it again a few months later with different actors/performers not the original Broadway cast like the first time. That was a pretty amazing show. Seeing them play in the various style and the music of each era.

This was soooo atmospheric, I felt like I was there! 👏I just loved the way you went through highlights of the numbers along with your detailed and knowledgeable comments about each member's performance, flourishes and occasional flubs. I didn't know Jimmy traveled separate that day, wonder what happened there..... Photos from Kezar look atypical (like Sydney '72 ) as it's daylight. Zeppelin always seemed much more like creatures of the night, but that didn't stop Plant and Bonham in particular from putting in a great show here. I just adore Bonzo's "and a fooooour ' from the start of The Ocean, he seemed to be quite playful in this gig. It's funny you mentioned the Cough. I saw some yt comments saying it was Plant, but being a Bonzette and having heard a fair few studio outtakes (that brief Four Sticks Alternate take for example) I noticed he was prone to coughing and wondered if it was in fact him while he and Plant were singing here.

Led Zeppelin did play at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1971. Also, Roy Harper did not open, he was thrust in unexpectedly between Lee Michaels and Zeppelin’s sets to help cover the delay.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories i'd never heard that. i love roy harper. but the second show {the one where the master tapes and acetate were thrown into the bay when, ahem, someone got paranoid) is quite phenomenal. i liken those two shows with copenhagen 79. the first show is great but the sound is a bit flat and the second show is just a bit better with better sound. but the ambience of the second show berkeley might be my favorite of al their audience tapes.
oh, for bragging rights i saw Return to Forever there at berkeley community center when they toured in 1983. needless to say that was jaw dropping in and of itself.

My dad was signed to RCA-records in 1974 & lived in Hollywood for a few years. He used to see the Tubes at “Gazzaris” on the strip, and said they were quite a spectacle back then.

My parents went to the Kezar show in '73. The main thing that they remember about the show is that the drum solo seemed to go on forever.
Same here my Dad went and remembers they were very late.
You know...the drum solo was definitely not as inspired. I revisited the whole thing, taking careful notes and you can tell when Bonham will just cruise in autopilot when he is not feeling it on the "drum engine" part at the beginning. I think he was definitely dehydrated from partying on his birthday and the day after. Rockstars are not made for Daylight shows, i insist haha. The drum solo was designed so the others could go take a toke...or a smoke..or go indulge in a little taste of coke. Same with the others with their solo spots. They were designed for the others to catch a breather

The more episodes I watch, the more amazed I am at the size & scope of Led Zeppelin. Studio recordings & live bootlegs really show how awesome they were & human too. The balls it takes to improvise every night is beyond incredible musicians. They made so many of their songs even more epic in concert. Nobody remembers Zeppelin concerts, the whole experience of the show was too overwhelming & the drugs & booze were a plenty!!!! 😎
If you listen to what Robert Plant says about Bill Graham, it was true until the day he died. We in the Bay Area we’re so fortunate to have Bill Graham. Was there anywhere else in the world that had as many shows of all sizes, did anyone have as many shows like the Day On The Green series every summer. Other places got big multi-line-up shows. But did anywhere have as many? We were blessed to have him.
Absolutely. Mr. Graham did a lot for the community and the rock scene. Interesting he closed the Fillmore just as the dolar started to lose its buying power. To say he was smart with money is an understatement!
And. The Grateful Dead.
Jose, I have no idea if you are into the dead but the early fillmore shows in 68 69 to the late 70s....blistering...and Jerry...one of the true masters.
I was in line to see the who at the cow palace in a downpour and the line was around the block and here comes Bill walking the line shaking our hands and apologizing about the wait and the rain . I gained a lot of respect for him that day. Its a bit ironic what would happen in 77 with Zep
totally. the dead's garage psych of 66-68 was so unbelievably raw, fresh, and exciting! you'd have never guessed they'd suddenly bust out three americana/country rural records of immense pastoral beauty. followed by my favorite transitional album by them, blues for A. once you can grok their incredible virtuosity, i like to then turn folks on to the live shows. back in the day, it was the other way around. it took me years to appreciate their studio stuff. i adore it now (i'm 61).
yeah, we gotta get Jose into them through one of the many windows available to music lovers.
remember, the dead tricked people into liking country music. then tricked them into liking jazz and disco. :)

Hey Matt, glad you joined us on the chat. This show tends to be overlooked for some reason, i think the old bootleg source contributed to that. Daylight didn't really helped them. I mean Moby Dick was not that inspired but....overall Bonzo carried them to greateness. The 77% humidity and definitely...partying on May 31st + Jun 1st had something to do with it hahahahha...i can only imagine having to wake these guys up and getting them on a plane to San Francisco. Btw man, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for your gift, my friend confirmed arrival and i saw the pics....INCREDIBLE. When i get i will thank you on video :)

Hey JCM, thanks for another great episode. I’m reading the comments, lots of people at the show or know people who were. I’m from the Bay Area as well, and was just driving by Kezar Stadium with a friend who was getting a little annoyed about how I kept talking about Zeppelin playing there in ‘73 rather than helping to find a parking space 😂 Kezar in case you didn’t know is at the end of Haight Street, yes just a few blocks from the corner of Haight/Ashbury which we walked by that day on our hang day there. I’ve always loved the bootleg from that show, haven’t heard it in a while. 🤔
Wow this one was interesting, I have heard pretty much most Zeppelin bootlegs, but I've never heard anything from this show before. This WAS the Zeppelin show to see, they somehow managed to get really spontaneous and adventurous and hold it together really tight.....I would give almost anything to travel back in time to see this show!! Pages guitar sound!! Insane!! Pages playing was again, on point but at the same time he was really pushing it into other dimensions, Plant was sounding the best I've heard from '73, Jones, well, hes Jonesy.....Bonzo, agressive but at the same time carefully considered in his playing that night....Thanks for putting this one together JCM, I have often looked at the photos from this show and wondered what it was actually like......well, there it is!!
Kev imagine the dehydration that day for them hehe. Yes this show is sometimes lost in time, but worth revisiting. I find all these shows fascinating knowing how the versions evolved into what was captured on The Song Remains The Same you know? These concert photos yeah, are definitely TIMELESS pieces of art!
Kev, I was at this show & unlike most l actually remember it well. It was a little early in the day for me to party & I was there for the music. Your insights as to how they played are mostly spot on. Especially about Plants vocals, likely the best & last time he sounded so good with Zep. Must’ve been the salt air 🎤🎼🎤
Thank you so much for this insight JCM. I've always been kinda fascinated by the Kezar show due to my poster of Plant with bottle of beer and cigarette in one hand, a white dove in the other. Still have the poster, although it now lies inside a cardboard tube with all my other posters( mainly of Page). I used to study that poster and the sea of the slightly out of focus audience faces, wondering what it must have been like to have been there. This documentary helped it giving me a taste off that fascinating concert. Many, many thanks, your the best. 👍

the day was worth it for The Tubes' set, they were eye popping. by the time Zep finally began we were beat from the heat, but hoped for the best.
I was a kid then and at this concert. It was a horrible wait and I don’t remember Graham using the “double neck guitar” excuse, but he used the same excuse in ‘77 in Oakland when they again delayed due to the backstage fight. That show sucked, but Kezar was great, and the classic LZ era.I thought I paid $5.00. an extravagant price then. Says here $6.
The doubleneck excuse, ughh yeah i hear you. It was clever on Graham first time around you gotta give it to him lol. 6 bucks for a Led Zeppelin show imagine, so LUCKY.
But you got to see a young Judas Priest at the Day on the Green and Rick Derringer. LZ almost ended up in jail.

To this day and back then, Zeppelin personified cool; every guy wanted to be them and every girl wanted to be with them. Plant's picture with the dove is off the charts; ,cigarette and beer in one hand and a white dove in the other; man, that's the definition of cool!!

I think he really needed another guitarist with him. His multi-tracking on the records almost necesitates this. He said the songs never sounded better than when he had The Black Crowes backing him.

Prior to the buzzing sound heard in this video there was a loud, ear piercing feedback sound at the very end of Rain Song. That's what Plant was apologizing for.
There was a feedback sound yes. But the buzzing sound definitely sounds like a signal too because Plant does state this at the beginning of the equipment not working properly. Yhe Tubes had only been together for a little over a year and were two years away from releasing their debut album , so no wonder Graham wasn't thrilled to have them on a bill with Zeppelin. However, he came to love the group over the next few years and booked them regularly at Winterland and other West Coast venues.
The Tubes certainly evolved to a very respectable place within new wave and art pop. This research made me wanna do a deep dive on them, they followed the line of The Mothers and Zappa. Thanks for watching!
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories They made some great music while together, but the one song that stands out is, "White Punks on Dope." It's a 7 minute epic that borders on prog with all of its complex changes. I'm not a musician, so I can't analyze it from a musical standpoint like you, but there's a lot going on in that seven minutes that required better than average technical skills.
I am a music fan, every band i come across i put mt listener hat on so trust me it sounds exciting! I leave the musician for later. If i like it as a listener then its good! I will check this out

The famous two-record set called Persistence, was my introduction to this gig…back in the middle eighties. It is a grossly edited, abbreviated offering of this gigantic ‘73 gig. Moby Dick is not included on that set and through the years I’ve heard the rumor that a legendary drum solo was offered by Bonzo but it hadn’t surfaced as of yet. FF thirty years and this show has been reconstructed top to bottom by the Zeppelin audiophiles - including MD! At one point during John’s tympani part, he’s doing triplets on his kick drum, (included here!) I’m trying to visualize this as I hear it - it’s just incredible to listen to! What’s even more incredible is: the gig on the following night in L.A.! These guys must’ve been burned out and drained of energy but…that gig at the Forum the following night is in my opinion THE highlight of the entire first leg! The energy is just overflowing…and I hope we get a segment on it. Thank you Jose for this surprise video! Excellent detective work, as usual.

Moby Dick was not as inspired as others, i have to say that, but still i enjoyed what Bonzo did on the Tympani, quite experimental. Hi Jose. Yes…the tape speed on the make up June 3 gig did vary. I so wish Mike the Mic captured this gig. I’m not fully certain though that tape deck technology was as good as it was in ‘73. It seemed that by ‘77 and with the addition of his Nakamichi equipment, things got better by then, anyway. Check the channel: Led Zeppelin Boots for the best and most complete version of the 6-3 show. They do Goin’ Down during the WLL medley! They really delivered that night for the LA faithful. The explosion at the end of WLL clips the recorder mic out! Just wonderful! Robert really burned his voice by now and it still amazes me that he actually went on stage, for the next gig on July 6 at Chicago. The 3 wk. respite I’m sure was good for them…but when they returned for the July run Robert couldn’t barely sing. Listen to the Chicago opener. He warmed up by the Detroit gigs though. The rest of July they turned in some awesome shows…along with the final vestiges of Robert’s original voice. In many ways for them, it was over by now.
1973 was peak. Cant believe they played in Dirty Harry's city/time lol. What an era.

I've always loved this 6/2/73 concert and I like the audience recording even better than the partial soundboard recording. I think it actually sounds better.
Neal Schon posted something on Twitter either in 2023 or maybe 2022 about this concert and being there. I think he said it was his first Led Zeppelin concert but I can't remember for sure. But he really enjoyed seeing at that 1973 show and made some comments about being in the audience at that show. And by the way, after seeing your video on the Santana and Buddy Miles 1972 album, I started looking for that one because I didn't have it. I picked it up for about $11 at an audio festival in Dallas last Saturday. I wanted to hear Neal's guitar playing at the Diamond Head Crater event and it did sound good. The whole record did! I didn't even know about this recording until seeing your video. So thank you!
I always liked how the camera zoomed out in Dirty Harry after Clint Eastwood shot Scorpio in the leg with his 44 Magnum flipping him over on the football field. I thought that was real cool camera work as the camera zooms out in the foggy San Francisco stadium and the scene kind of fades away after the incident there in the movie.

Hey Brian, first off, congrats on your Santana and Buddy Miles purchase, that MAKES ME happy!!! It's really a fantastic concert, Neal shreds there. That Dirty Harry scene, yes, a classic, i love all 5 movies from the series, Clint Eastwood will always be a bada$$. I can imagine Neal Schon being at Kezar since Santana toured in 1971 and he did have some free time in the early days of Journey who signed with Columbia until 1975. Thank you for watching!

And speaking of Neal, I bought an LP I had never had or heard last year when it was getting repressed. It was from a '70s funk type of singer named Betty Davis. I had no idea that on her self-titled debut album Neal Schon played on 4 (according to the credits on the back of the cover) out of the 8 tracks. I actually think he played on 6 them but I can't say for sure. This was in 1973 which would have put it right between Santana and Journey. It's a pretty cool sounding album too. Keep up the great work JCM!

Led Zeppelin had a show in between the Fillmore West and kezar show at the indoor Oakland coliseum to promote Led Zeppelin three album Bill Graham was also the promoter.

Great video! Jimmy page had too much fun at that hotel in L.A. As a band, they sure loved L.A. and all it’s offerings. Magical performances though! Ever see that one video of those shows, filmed from a fan up in the seats? You get a good feeling of being there and anticipating what will come.

Page's sketchy playing here was due to serious tendinitis and this is why there was a six week break afterwards, with the Madison Square Garden shows being postponed until mid-July: "It was a strained tendon, I had all manner of treatment and injections but nothing worked and it was fucked up for six weeks", he said in an interview featured in "Led Zeppelin in their own words", (Omnibus Press)

Recuerdo haber visto las fotos de este concierto por primera vez hace muchos años cuando recién comenzaba entrar al internet, que esa época solo se podía entrar en los famosos cafes internet, el sitio en el que las vi era una especie de base de datos de "todos" los bootlegs de Led Zep, y recuerdo muy claramente que al ver las fotos de la banda en plena luz del día era una sensación realmente extraña, era como que daban más ganas de poder estar ahí entre esos muchachos, en medio de miles y miles escuchando a la bestia de mil cabezas sonando bajo el sol !! Recuerdo que otro concierto que me dio el mismo sentimiento fue el de el Bath Blues Festde 1969, en el que igual las fotos eran de día y tan vívidas que uno casi podía sentir que estaba ahí !! Si no me equivoco hace muy poco aparecieron imágenes en video filmadas profesionalmente nunca antes vistas de dicho festival que luego fueron sincronizadas por un youtuber con una muy buena grabación del concierto y el resultado es realmente electrizante y alucinante !! The problem i see with Mr. Graham is that he was just a promoter...and i say this with no disrespect. Peter Grant was the manager of THE SOURCE and also, CARED about his boys. Not just the money.

Yes indeed. Roger Taylor from Queen had them on the 1981 Tour. He plays a solo on the Montreux film. Carl Palmer also but more Symphonic.

Jim may have been late because he and Lori were embroiled in a torrid relationship at this time - which makes me believe he wanted to get as much time in with her as possible before leaving for SF. Who knows, maybe I’m wrong but it was a crazy time with Bonzo’s Birthday gig a few nights’ prior and all. We couldn’t imagine the levels of unfettered hedonism that occurred back then.

A friend of mine said at the beginning of a Led Zeppelin show there was a huge cloud of white smoke coming from the stage, then there flew out hundreds of white doves! Of course, he had indulged himself with a micro-dot!

Minute 9 shows a photo of Plant, among Bill Graham, the promoter, and Steve Weiss, the NY lawyer, a busy tough man... According to some testimonies, Steve Weiss was the business brains behind LZ, not Peter Grant. He supervised the Atlantic Records deal. Weiss came up with the 90/10 split, starting with Jimmy Hendrix - most of the deals available were 60 percent artist, 40 percent promoter. Weiss always gave the credit to “the Leds”, as he called them, but the guy was a genius and could squeeze every last nickel.
Peter Grant fed off that - his hired gun pulled the trigger for him. Grant had a quite false reputation for being intimidating, but he wasn't... He was big. Steve Weiss was intimidating. Peter let Steve be the asshole. His father supposedly worked for Meyer Lansky. Many
attributed his effortless move into music due to his business relationship with Vanilla Fudge’s manager, Phil
Basile. Phil was a mob guy, according to Carmine Appice,
Fudge’s drummer.
Weiss not only was the mouthpiece, he provided the roadway into the executives. He managed to be respected by those guys, whether it was Ahmet or Mo Ostin or Jerry Greenberg. And he wasn't outrageous in his demands beyond possible. He was who really ran the LZ show for five years, 68' to 73', with a couple of assistants. That was all it was needed... that, and Richard Cole for tour entertainments, of course. Needless to say Swan Song and Steve's firm were all together in the same office. He held the power of Peter Grant and Led Zeppelin in America.
Steve Weiss was also the guy who got everybody out of trouble, with presumed connections to DEA, FBI, CIA, private detectives... The contact presumably was intermediated by an ex-cop who was Steve Weiss’s mate.
Not a single mention from Jimmy Page nor Robert Plant to Steve Weiss in their official autobiographies.
