I met and hung out with Eddie Kramer in Greenwich Village in 1993 or 1994. He was shocked somebody recognized him, and I sat next to him and we hung out drinking for the next 2 or 3 hours, mainly talking about Led Zeppelin. It one was of the most amazing, coolest experiences of my life. He told me they were the greatest and most talented band he ever worked with. Anyway, we talked about this album most of the time. A super friendly, cool, funny guy. Of course also brilliantly talented.
Best Zepp docs period. I know you put alot of work into this. Their history is no joke. Thank you!

This is truth!!! (to JCM… please please please embark on a journey into Jimmy Page. Though I really enjoy Carl Baldessaire’s work, it’s not that truly comprehensive exploration James Patrick Page deserves. The ONLY 2 guitarists I’ve ever heard who truly “get” Page are you and Jimmy Sakurai. And unfortunately Jimmy’s English isn’t the best (which gave me the thought: you two together sharing your “Pageness” sending files back & forth to each other… oh never mind 😂… but. Please consider doing a deep dive into his playing through the Zep years…!!!). Thanks SO much for what you do!)
Was at the Rainbow in 74 Bonzo came on the stage in the 2nd half wearing black tights! went over to the drums, physically lifted Moon off the stool and proceeded to blow him away with the sheer power of his drumming. For those of you who never hade the privilage of seeing Bonzo live he was so powerful, loud yes but powerful. Theres a big difference

I was fortunate enough to have seen zeppelin eight times… the first time on 7/7/73, all three nights 1/20, 1/21, 1/22 in 75, and 4/6, 4/7, 4/9, and 2nd row main floor for the 4/10 Easter Sunday “Stormtrooper” show in ‘77. It was the last show they ever played in Chicago.
We would buy every ticket we could get our hands on, then sell or trade up to get in every night and get the best seats we could lol…

Led Zeppelin came to my home town, Albuquerque,NM, University of New Mexico Arena "The Pit" in 1973. Unfortunately, they never came back.
I only saw Zeppelin once, ‘75 at The Forum. Bonham was a Beast on drums. I’m so glad I saw them touring on Physical Graffiti! I loved the album so much, the concert is still my favorite, up there with Queen (same year! Sheer Heart Attack tour), and YES in 1979. 🤗

So..... you're a graphic designer as well as music arranger, musician, media editor and storyteller that's pretty impressive my friend. And a thorough researcher! Thanks for all you do.
as another graphic designer you got that right, brother -- JCM is nailing it! -- esp. that opening window sequence: how clever to bring the LP cover into the light or also how I saw it when peaking on LSD -- yup, I first heard this album in its entirety while on about 350 mics of Windowpane: changed my life!
Wow Jeff, honored by your comment! It means a lot to have your graphic designer feedback on this production. All a labor of admiration for Led Zeppelin and love for music in general. Every "Making Of" series is a different journey that i take my time to feel, look for the angles, create the visuals and all. Although i majored in Marketing and have been a musician for 22 years, your comment makes me think that yeah, i can call myself a graphic designer, so thanks for your empowering words. Episode 3 is coming up with a complete breakdown of the band's activity in 1974, a very interesting year for the Zepp corporation!
I never get tired out of saying this: I saw Led Zeppelin Feb 7, 1975 At the Garden. Back then one couldn't push keys on their cell phone to reserve a ticket. We had to drive 60 miles round trip until " Ticketron" relocated 2 miles away. Sears dept store weren't ready for the mob of mostly teenagers waiting in line for tickets 3 hrs!! My ticket was $8.50. Anyway- for the concert Zep previewed Kashmir, In My Time of Dying, Trampled Underfoot and Sick Again. We knew the LP was to be titled " Physical Graffiti " ( the cover based on a building 50 blocks away in Greenich Village, NYC. I was raving about this concert for about- oh 48 years! Pages finger was injured and Plant had a noticeable Flu. His voice not perfect- but it was still great. I loved " No Quarter" better after seeing it/ hearing it live. Oh - We were stoned immaculate! I bought a bootleg tshirt and it seems like 50 people in school were wearing them that Monday. Lol- I bought a poster outside rolled up for $1.00!!! The Lp came out 2 1/2 weeks later and double albums were not too popular. Maybe $7.00 price range? We listened to it on 8 track in cars and LP at our homes. My LP is in mint condition and I enjoy the 2013 remastered version as well. Just wish I could understand the lyrics to Sick Again. Thanx JCM. Trample on your foot?
As of '98 it was still like that getting tickets. I had to make a 60 mile round trip to Augusta, GA for a Page and Plant concert at Nashville's Bridgestone arena.

@@FredBloggs919 Well, Yes did release The Yes Album, Fragile and Close to The Edge (which Zep doesn't have one of these, frankly) in like 15 months. For a short period in the 70's Yes were at least as good as anyone else, and if you're into it, they're the best.
Physical Graffitti with all of its diversity and musical range still remains my all-time favorite album by any artist. Even though 45 years later I seldom listen to it anymore. Hearing Kashmir in 4th grade 1976 was how I first learned who the band was and was blown away by it. The song is a simple guitar riff but very distinctive and haven't heard anything like it before or since. Didn't even know who LZ were at that time but hearing that song was pretty much life-changing.
Right around the time as Led Zeppelin was recording ‘Trampled Underfoot’ in mid-February 1974 at Headley Grange in Hampshire, UK - a neighbour of ours, had invited us to go with him downtown to the Auto Show Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Centre. It was my first time seeing the show, and seeing all the then-brand-new models for the 1974-75 model year was truly spectacular - just like this tune! It was only when I met my wife, Cindy, that this song took on a whole new meaning... 🎤🎹🎸🥁💓

Probably the most intelligent breakdown of a R & R album I've heard yet. I mean, who mentions Bretton Woods in the description of the construction of a Zeppelin record? I can't think of one. Yet those are relevant aspects as to why music went in the direction it did during that period of time, and not just for Zeppelin. It's all food for thought. I'm loving the relative inspiration insight of the time in the influence on some of these songs, some of which I never considered. I know Page listened to a lot of the radio of the time and I had heard him mention songs like the guitar on Midnight at the Oasis, never really thinking that it could be inspirational in his own writing. The tracks that you're using as possible sources of inspiration are illuminating. My favorite bootleg makes another appearance, I love it! Looking forward to the next one! Keep teaching Jose!

I see music creation as a product of the times but as collective energy and i think the more music fans and musicians get this, the less we will put humans on pedestals but see them as humans and understand the artistic process is a gift, it doesn't belong to ego but emotions and circumstance! I just turned 60 and my kid is about to turn 22… a few years back when he was 16 I bought a VHS copy of the song remains the same and forced him to watch it
At first, it seems strange you know the dragon pants and everything no.. big explosions or light show… but after he watched the segment with, since I’ve been loving you and the guitar solo.. he has been a fan ever since we both play guitar so that helped us bond.. I own all of their albums and a number of bootlegs, and we have been going through them on the weekends since then
That's awesome. Since I've Been Loving You was the track that made me want to play guitar so you definitely built a very special bond with your son. Happy he has a Dad like you that can show him the works of the mighty Zepp!
Now you're what I consider a great dad. I'm 10 years older than you, but we were both blessed to grow up with the music of the 60s. Even many of the "bubblegum" songs by groups like the Turtles and Monkees were 3 minute gems. It was a time when a handful of classic LPs were released every month. The groups out of Great Britain were the pioneers of rock in all its different forms, and in 1969 almost every album I bought was by a British band. LZ, of course, but also Procol Harum, Humble Pie, King Crimson, Traffic, Jeff Beck, and the Stones, to name just a few.
I always wanted a son to share my love of great music, but ended up with two beautiful daughters instead.

You should obtain a revised and corrected DVD copy because that old VHS was badly mastered. The soundtrack (and obviously the film, too) playback speed was far too fast.

The best thing about these documentaries from JCM is that even though I thought I knew a lot about Led Zeppelin, JCM always, ALWAYS, tells me things I didn't know or see myself. His research is impeccable and his wide musical intellect is truly incomparable. Great, great work yet again.

19:32 Page and Plant also opened their 1998 shows with “the wanton song”. I was 17 years old and went to that tour in my home town, Portland, Oregon. I love how the song seems to spend the entire first minute NOT resolving… leaving the listener uneven, and unfulfilled… until the chorus where Jimmy just sews it all together, like the master he is, a beautiful cascade of notes rains down and everything resolves perfectly.
Oh yes, Jimmy's resolution there...is brilliant. A classic track, HANDS DOWN! Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 3!

I love these documentaries, and I'm always intrigued by the behind the scenes material you find of the band in the studio. This is one of the channels where I'll drop what I'm doing and watch new videos.
Yes was signed by Atlantic in the same year as Led Zeppelin. I think Melody Maker predicted they would both become hugely successful. Once you're finished with Zeppelin maybe you could do a similar documentary series on Yes. Id live to see the progression of how Awaken went from idea to it's finished form.

Great 2nd episode for Graffiti! I enjoyed hearing those rehearsal tapes. They had to be careful not to piss John Henry off too much! He definitely had his say. But his drumming brought so much to the table. They were lucky!

Saint Marks Groove! That's for sure. I lived a block to the right with a window right off the sidewalk halfway between Grafifti and The Fillmore East. Like another guy said - your artistic eye and color and shading pallet enhances the experience. You're like a mystic with a similar vibe to Jose Mojica Marins. How'd you get up inside the Physical Graffiti building? Like a genie. The purple sky house at the end of each episode is your bottle. That's how I like to imagine all this you make.
Thanks so very much man. I thought about the theme song for a week or so, carefully taking my time to find the right idea. It was tricky because of Kashmir dominating the color scheme sort of speak. Wow a Mojica comparison, that's great stuff hehe. The purple ending was at a former record store i went to, i miss their second floor view!
Nice job as always, JCM - I've watched every second of every episode and have loved every one. Can't wait for your coverage of the 1977 tour. I know that older (!) Zep aficianados pooh pooh anything live after 1973, but my only chance to see them was on 5/28/77 (the third show) at The Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland. I've been to 400+ major shows now, and I consider it to be in my Top 10 somewhere. Them and The Beatles caught something between four specific people that created a separate and distinct entity that nobody else has created.
1977 was a fantastic tour. I don't like the 1975 tour from a Page and Plant perspective but the more i do my research on Graffiti i can understand the enormous challenge that year was. Now 77, i love the comeback feeling really. I've talked about the 77 Tour on my Presence series and also single videos like Seattle and Pontiac, i will do more of this in the future. Jose ❤ thanks sooooo much for your incredible work and passion yet again!!! Graffiti was the one that REALLY got me hooked. When I was 15 my Friday night treat would be to go to bed and listen to whatever new album I might have bought. One week it was this behemoth of an album. Jeez I nearly destroyed my headphones with the volume and goodness the excitement of Custard Pie, The Rover etc. I was also a really keen cyclist back then and bought a magazine on the subject. So, I'm reading an article about some guys cycling through some beautiful parts of India, and Kashmir came through the cans........ it was a seminal moment for me, the music made the magazine article 3D. Amazing. A surreal experience.
Now, I have always thought this whole album is a milestone,every single track. But when I discovered the alternative version of In the light, the one with "Sunshine brings laughter" and so on? Jones on the opening creates a piece of music that to me, sounds like it came all the way from the very beginning of the mists of time itself? It's like he is channeling something from way back when. I prefer that version to the album cut. Anyway have you seen Jimmy and the collaboration with Gibson to release a signature twin neck? For a guy who is 80, he sure is in amazing form!!!

I was 10 years old in 1974 the economy was more complex than what you mentioned. In October, 1973 was a middle east war, and the United States supported Israel, and Saudi Arabia impose an oil embargo which really threw the American economy out of whack.

Yes Duane as you said it was much more complex. I tried to provide a synthesis of a topic that had me staying up awake for many nights trying to conceptualize the storytelling. If i was in college again i would like to make a thesis on this subject. The geopolitical environment of 1973 and 1974 is sadly...fascinating. As always thanks so much for tuning in!

The Page/crowes version of the Wanton song sounds great with the triple guitars of Page, Robinson and Freed. They played it on one of the late night shows and they blend really well.
Agree, i really enjoyed the Graffiti numbers with the Crowes as opposed to the other stuff from Zepp's catalogue.

I love hearing them work so hard on "In My Time..." because I think it is (after many years of loving all Led Zeppelin) my favorite song. I get high every time I hear it, mostly because, once it gets going, Bonzo takes off and plays LEAD DRUMS, and Jimmy LET'S HIM! It may be the only studio song that they never did a better version of live...
Bonzo played Lead Drums in here for sure. After this song, it was hard for me to dig the rest of Graffiti as a teen hahahah. What a MASTERCLASS in Jamming and just ROCKING overall!

'Trampled' definitely sounds similar to 'Long Train' I noticed that as a kid.Both songs have never stopped sounding great.

Dude, thank you for doing this. Physical Graffiti is my favorite Zeppelin album (albums). They could have easily put out two separate albums but they didn't and that was a brilliant move. Like you said in your documentary money was tight. But, when Led Zeppelin came out with an album you HAD to have it or you didn't have a party. In those days it was all about house parties. Usually one turn table, a great set of speakers and a strong amp is all you needed. You had to have the best music to get the babe's juiced and Zeppelin did that. Also I would like to point out that you have done an outstanding job not only explaining the music but also killing it on the sound track. Great work my friend and I look forward toward to your next documentary.

There's a rumour they filmed some of the Led Zeppelin II recording process.
I loved a lot of bands from that era from the late 60s through the early 80s but Led Zeppelin just stood out to me.. I was also a big fan of Yash Crosby stills, Nash Black Sabbath, something about Led Zeppelin was different

It could be synthesized, in which case he NAILED IT.
Yeah, the Hurdy Gurdy's texture has that acoustic style that suits what we hear. I also think Page said the violin bow on acoustic not to reveal his whole secrets...i've tried that on an acoustic and you miss the resonance continuum that Page and Plant 1995-1996 used in great detail with Nigel Eaton's contributions.

Another fantastic study in Led Zeppelin recording process. Now we will head off into the most difficult time in their entire career. 1975... Roberts vocal issues, Jimmy's health decline, and Bonzo's growing dislike of touring. John Paul was his usual self musically but slowly made moves to stay in different hotels and keep away from the crazyness that surrounded Zeppelin on tour.
You are 100% correct. I thought the 1973-1974 part of the script would be the hardest but 1975....what a surprise HAHA. I would say energy wise...it was their least successful on stage. Things were not clicking as usual, not criticizing the chops but the overall sensation of "we're at the top, now what?". A scary place to be. The more i delve into Graffiti's backstory, the more i see Presence as a better album for very specific reasons....they got their creative juice back and the 1977 Tour was just a celebration of that, despite the low points....they regained their identities.

Those Graffiti rehearsals are a revelation, in particular In My Time Of Dying. They show how integral John Bonham was to Zeppelin's creative process, and how everything would fall into place once he mastered his sophisticated drum parts. Of course all that hard work didn't stop Playboy magazine from voting Karen Carpenter as their favorite drummer in a 1975 reader's poll, much to Bonzo's despair and Karen's wary perplexity. 🫤

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories In truth Karen shrugged it off and never took publications like Playboy seriously. She thought polling lists were ridiculous because of their high-and-mighty competitive factor and she had a point. Think of the stature that Rolling Stone magazine has acquired over the years and how it uses its long fixed biases to rate musicians and albums in their respective polls in order to influence/divide/outrage their readers.
In regards to the Playboy reader's poll, Karen personally thought Bonzo was peerless and felt she didn't deserve to be in the same league as him because of his ingenious arrangements. She never cared much for hard rock, but thought highly of Led Zeppelin and Bonzo, in particular his ease of using match grip to play single stroke rolls as opposed to traditional grip (Karen used trad grip a lot in her playing), as well as Bonzo's quick kick drum technique. She had no ill will and personally cited him as one of her favorite drummers, alongside Ringo, Joe Morello, Buddy Rich, Ronnie Tutt, Cubby O'Brien, and Hal Blaine. It's unfortunate/heartbreaking that Karen was never asked or ever got to properly explain her feelings about this footnote during her lifetime. She was just as deep and unique a person as she was a musician. Not to mention quirky! "A drummer who happens to sing," as she once called herself.
Side note: Richard is a big Zeppelin fan and cites Black Dog and Kashmir to be his favorite tracks (because of their respective arrangements and use of odd time patterns). As for favorite Zeppelin album? He said it was a toss up between IV and Graffiti. (No ITTOD, btw... 😣)

In My Time of Dying is my fav Zeppelin song. (Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock keeps it from my personal all time number 1).

As we all know, Zep was special and unusual and we miss them terribly. I did however enjoy both Page/plant and Black Crowes with Page projects for different reasons. Michael Lee (RIP) the drummer for Page/Plant was even more impressive to watch than Bonham, a MONSTER drummer who most often led Page and Plant as the driver of the dynamics train anyway. I couldn’t tear my attention away from him during the 4 Page/Plant shows I saw. One from stage left next to Pages guitars and even that didn’t distract me from Mr. Michael Lee. Watch the Nobody’s Fault video of them and, with your great insight and musical knowledge, you will see just what I’m talking about with Michael driving the train, so to speak. Again, BIG thanks here! Whoo Hoo!
I still don't understand why Swan Song wasn't on the latest Deluxe remasters. There was also a rawer and superior version of Hats off to Roy Harper that was also oddly left off.😮
Because Swan Song was released as a bootleg so long ago and Page was ANGRY, rightfully so, he didn't want to put it out on an official product. The other version of Hats Off you mention yes, it's INCREDIBLE. An Official Swan Song release also creates the problem of bootlegs being the "first" release...which can lead into a weird loophole- I have never paid any money for Bootlegs nor i will ever do. Inspired by the success of Beatles' "Now And Then", It would be great that LZ work on "Swan Song" as his final recording, using Bonzo's drums part. It would never happened sadly, but could be a great send off for their story.
They could call it Now and Zepp. Try to finish Swan Song or maybe...Robert add's vocals to 10 ribs and CARROT POD!

In My Time of Dying also was recorded as it happened and Jimmy Page in a 2015 interview with Redbeard on In the Studio said that it had no edits and no sections were removed and was recorded in a couple of takes apart from the double tracked vocals and extra slide guitar parts.
Correct, no edits, recorded in full as a live in the studio sessions. The small overdubs on the guitar are noticeable as slide accents here and there. But it's really an achievement to do 10 minutes like this, with such power. Thank you very much for watching! Stay tuned por Episode 3!
Among all the other '70s tracks you highlighted that inspired Trampled Underfoot, in an earlier video I believe you noted the similarity between the main riff & the riff from Deep Purple's Sail Away (a track from Burn); you can really hear this on the Trampled Underfoot demo from this video as Jimmy Page plays the riff a bit slower (similar to the DP track) than the eventual studio recording.
Yeah, i was going to include Burn, thing is, that one was recorded November 1973 with Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio so that meant Jones already had his ideas for Trampled, but trust me.....i almost included this one. In My Time of Dying and Burn share a similar universe. I beliveve that Jimmy admired Blackmore's stuff, but never really said it. Thank you very much for watching! Stay tuned por Episode 3!

No doubt Zepp took inspiration from many other songs, but I think it would be an interesting episode to hear what Modern artists have pulled from Zepp. Wolfmother for example. Or Sting using the "Every breath you take" line.
Oh man, THANK YOU for bringing this up! When i was working out the bits and pieces i definitely thought of this one. Aerosmith recorded the song in October 1972 and released it for the first time in June 1973 when Zeppelin was touring the U.S and went on a brief vacation back to London. Because they had to re-release it in 1976 to a much greater market success i wonder, how much of a fuzz it generated in 1973 you know? So i was hesitant to include it. Maybe Zepp was inspired by Dream On's ascending finale for Kashmir... :)
