Whole food diet, with quality meat, no vegetable oils, no added sugar (fructose). Find people to listen to that support healthy lfestyle without preaching 1 particular diet, healthy eating has alot of overlap.
I give Gary Taubes full credit for his guidance to reverse Type 2 Diabetes and 100 pounds of body fat and reverse Obesity. No apologies if you have a problem with that. His guidance works. Good Calories Bad Calories is where to start.
absolutely correct, these people just become vegan and claim that their body feels so much lighter and their digestion has improved so much, that's just because there is nothing to digest. they're deprived of B vitamins and the essential fatty acids. They are definitely gonna gain weight as they age because of the carb consumption and at that time they'll have no idea what is happening to them.
Yes! Good Calories Bad Calories is the way to go! This is my first time being exposed to this channel, and I did give it a full listen. Regrettably, the problems were plentiful. At 2:54 the presenter (for simplicity please allow me to refer to him as "MacAskill") quotes Taubes and immediately proves Taubes's quote to be exactly accurate. I must say, I hadn't anticipated he was going to help prove Taubes's case. He then attempts to make this old, tortured distinction between types of carbs. Specifically, he dismisses the quoted research because it talked about white bread and jam. Oh boy! Then, to make matters worse, but in the hopes of demonstrating how obviously right he is, MacAskill uses one of the oldest propaganda tricks in the world. Namely, a child. One could easily imagine MacAskill's next move would be to bring in a caveman like the old GEICO commercials. Mr. MacAskill, listen, people who take nutrition seriously are familiar with the glycemic index. So we know carbs metabolize/digest at different rates, up to and including so-called "superstarch." This isn't the victory lap you seem to think it is. Perhaps most egregious of all, having already proven Taubes's quote to be exactly correct, at 6:30 MacAskill has the temerity to question Taubes's integrity, and at 16:59 he goes so far as to call Taubes's references "Insane." Wowzers! To round it all out, at 15:50 MacAskill hits us perhaps the most suspicious of all claims. He basically asks us to trust his word. Specifically he says "I know because I read dozens of [studies]." Trust me? You actually went with trust me, Mr. MacAskill? Winding down, it was at 17:22 when MacAskill seems to have most tipped his hand (although the channel's name was already a clear clue). Specifically, he uses the term "food animals" and brings in the pandemic and the environment. Talk about moving the goal posts! In conclusion, most people who pay attention know that vegans have a moral objection to killing or subjugating food animals. Fair enough, they are entitled to their moral beliefs. Lamentably, nowadays an increasing number of "plant based" people seem to wrap themselves in the sanctimonious cloak of "saving the planet." See 17:45. Again, I thoroughly support the right for people to have differing value systems. What I am saying is, please don't allow your moral beliefs to distort biochemical reality. In other words, I would fight for your right to oppose the killing or subjugation of food animals, while simultaneously asking you to be honest about biochemistry. P.S. The blanket condemnation of "processed" food is small-minded and anti-science. It is very similar to how the Paleo Diet demands people only eat what the caveman ate. And in the present case, globally rejecting processed food is extra bizarre, because at 17:01 MacAskill gives kudos for a perceived use of "the latest science." In other words, MacAskill does support human innovation. Are we not to consume cheese, protein powder, etc, because they are processed foods? Clearly, by objecting to processed food a person is also objecting to science and innovation.
@NOTREALLY HANKAARON I'm a parent and a grandparent and I've been a vegetarian for 50 years and I'm doing fine. I think longterm keto is extreme and dangerous. But hey, it sells books. Ka-ching!
Hah, I'm living proof that Gary is full of Gary. I eat a whole hell of a lot more carbs now than I did when I was eating animal protein and in fact, I lost some weight after going WFPB, about 11lbs. I was never over weight though so I really didn't need to lose weight. I did however reverse my heart disease and high cholesterol along with a large list of other things wrong with me.
I lost weight too dude. WFPB and dropped 7kg. Toned without exercising ( haven't tested to see what body i'd get if I did...Yizer!!) And the best part. I'm a chick and cellulite was an issue so was inflamation of my knees from standing too long and ankles and just uncomfortable in my body but...dadadada! No cellulite and no swelling of the body which made the fat cells push to the surface of my skin. Yay! Not even trying. Oh and carbs carbs carbs. I mean...shit I eat carbs and I am lean. Woooohoo!
Is it just me or does it seem like Gary tabs is having a hard time breathing and doesn’t seem very healthy? I have to admit that 15 years ago I read his book and was absolutely convinced. He is an amazing writer and a very convincing writer. But I’m back in my plant-based ways and feel amazing and at 50 just got great results from my doctor so I guess we will just keep on Rollin and see what happens in the nutrition world
"I have to admit that 15 years ago I read his book and was absolutely convinced. He is an amazing writer and a very convincing writer." Yes, nutrition is part of what I study and teach as a university professor, and I've been studying nutrition myths and what keeps them going. Based on that, I came to call Taubes "The Dark Prince of Dietary Deceptions." He writes beautifully and convincingly, but incredibly deceptively... citing a study that was clearly on PROCESSED carbs then turning around and deftly portraying all carbs as bad. Meanwhile, he never lets the reader in on the elephant in the room--the fact there's a mountain of research showing very low fat WFPB diets are healthier.
I've been plant based for a couple years now. This winter I hurt my back and became sedentary. I was hoping not to put on any weight. I cut out leavened bread and replaced it with grains such as oats, rice, barley. I only eat a serving like 2 times a week. It's amazing how whole foods, plant based, keeps your weight down even as you cannot ambulate around. It won't be long now I'll be out and about in no time.
I am going to be the first a one of the few to say it, but before I went WFPB (for the animals) I literally THRIVED on a low carb diet and it really held my food sensitivities and and inflammation in check. However, going WFPB, I feel as though my body is actually healing as I am able to tolerate more and more foods and eliminating overly processed foods sure makes a difference also.
I believe it. There are clinics like Virta Health that help people lose weight and bring their blood sugar under control with low-carb diets. Most people show vast improvement over eating processed food. It's just that most people do even better on WFPB diets after a period of adjustment, without the environmental destruction.
@@Viva-Longevity Exactly, and without the animal suffering. It's like low carb omnivore/keto is like a method that might work acutely in most situation where information or blood sugar levels are the problem, but a WFPB diet is the one diet that works in the long run and actually seems to heal your body
@@Yourhighnessnona "heal your body"? What does that even mean? If you eat eat some cauliflower, your missing arm will grow back? Yeah, stop with the vague new age claims, you don't know what you're talking about.
Im a hardcore keto dieter but you are the first plant based person to make me consider my decision. I have noticed a lot of "leading" narratives with keto. There is also some solid science as well. You've given me a blueprint to study more though. Thank you.
I recommend for your reading "Brain Food" by Lisa Mosconi which I think persuasively shifts nutritional relevance away from animals and toward fish, but otherwise thoroughly plant-based.
Hey I was keto for a while too!! Low-carb for years and then keto for several months. After enough time passed my progress stopped and my weight started going up again and my cholesterol and good pressure were going up too. Ended up finding plant-based and switched. Great decision so far. My weight came back down and I'll be getting a new blood test soon to see if my levels are better. 😁
I really like your conversational tone throughout this presentation. You do a fine job stating the facts, injecting humor when appropriate and remaining calm in the face of absurdity. Regarding Taubes ... it just goes to show that you can't always trust the face value of higher ed degrees!
What tribalists from both camps refuse to acknowledge is that not all bodies are the same. Just because you thrive running on good fats or whole carbs doesn't mean everyone else will. I now eat low carb (not quite keto) and get my protein and fat from fish, local goat cheese, local free range eggs, olive oil, avocados. My dangerously high blood sugar levels have dropped and overall blood tests much improved plus dropped 14 kilos in 8 months.
Gary Taubes changed my diet 15 years ago when he wrote that cultures that ate their native diet didn’t get heart disease, diabetes, or obesity until they started importing sugar, flour, and vegetable oil. I’ve followed that advice and am active at 80 and nothing hurts, but it’s still early in the day.
"Calories Don't Count" was an introduction to looking at body weight, and weight loss differently as well as challenging the ancient theory of what a calorie is. Thankfully, the science has progressed and much light has been shed on the topic.
I hate when people talk about how they give up carbs in Keto and never felt better. Ummm what most likely is a carb to these people is just processed junk. For myself, even when it comes to white bread, I make it myself at home and do not include the milk and butter most commonly found in store white bread. I wonder how people going Keto would do if they were actually eating real carbs beforehand.
I've noticed this as well...goes to show which dietary lifestyle is the most morally correct way of living... Keto makes a lot of sense, but to each its own. I also believe it's processed sugar that is the main problem, and eliminating this would heal everyone.
@@Minney-Me the problem is when keto people talk about carbs, they usually talk about sugar, french fries and coca cola, and that leads them to conclude that carbs are bad.
I was on keto for about 2 years. Loved how I felt on keto. My total cholesterol went up, but HDL was in the 80s (male) and my LDL was also in the 90s (was in 50s prior to keto). I had an abundant amount of energy, I had extreme focus, and my skin was absolutely clear. I was 6 pack lean and got my college body back. I could see patient after patient without getting physically or mentally tired (nephrologist). My wife got pregnant and the keto food smell would make her vomit so I stopped keto for her. Don’t knock it till you try it folks. Now I’m on mostly a plant based diet. I feel great still. Not the same energy as keto, not even close, but still good. Skin isn’t as clear. My LDL (60s) has gone down but so did my HDL (40s). It does seem more balanced to me though so I’ll be sticking to this for a while!
@@aliendroneservices6621 The link between LDL and heart disease is quite clear at this point. But also most sources of LDL are now classified as carcinogenic.
@@j.goebbels2134 So, we should ignore the evidence?: "The latest study, published in the health journal BMJ Open, examined 19 other studies involving a total of 68,094 people to find out the effect of high LDL cholesterol levels on older people." "In almost 80% of elderly people studied, those with higher levels of LDL cholesterol lived longer than those with lower levels."
Thank you for this. I struggle with my weight and maintaining healthy choices. I hit 114kg and decided to make a change. I went keto. I tried to not eat the classic fatty meets, but I will say that it was satiating whilst trying to ditch processed carbs (chips, biscuits, crackers, candy, chocolate). My Dr found high cholesterol and I am now transitioning to a majority of my meal being plant based with lean meat. I've lost 6kg, back to exercising and actually feel alive and not zombified. This video presented facts, I didn't feel judged and helped me on (slow) way towards being plant based.
When I compare the physical appearance of Gary Taubes to, let's say, Dr. Greger, Dr. Esselstyn or Dr. McDougall, there are similarities and differences: All of them look slim and slender. The energy with which they present though, is entirely different. Gary Taubes seems to have a hard time catching a breath, and seems mostly lethargic and void of passion and energy. The plant-based doctors, on the other hand, seem super energetic and passionate. Atkins was another prime example of what can happen when you decide to walk-your-keto-talk. I'd really argue against that.
Lol. He's always had that energy and way of speaking. Take a look at the carnivore MDs like Ken Berry and Shawn Baker, who are both "super energetic and passionate". So are so many in the low carb world. Given that you can reverse diabetes eating that way, not to mention a host of other ailments, it's worth paying attention to. If people are happy and healthy eating differently from you, there's nothing wrong with that.
@@tucsonbandit Yes. To be fair, this seems to be a thing for anyone convinced that their way is the only way - I was reading comments on a carnivore YT thing and some of the carnivores were saying all the keto people looked gaunt, which is just silly.
Brexiter being the english version of trumpers i highly doupt it. There is a direct correlation between right wing christian conservative values and ketards
There is a lot of money to be made promoting the keto diet and misrepresenting or just lying about the science of good long term health. Did anyone notice how short of breath Gary Taubes was ?
But they do not say to reduce fat and protein a day as if too much you might not loose but even gain. But keto works.I follow diet doctor recepies and Dr Eric Berg advice.
@@LizbethLeeds "But keto works." Keto works for weight loss, but you won't know whether or not it works for health for many years and decades. Right now it is a fad lots of people are trying.
I dispute the notion that junk carbs make you fat. Certainly they are unhealthy, but in the absence of dietary fat, (or very low fat diets) despite the glucose levels, people seem not to gain fat. When one mixes fats with large amounts of carbohydrates, much of the fat is stored. Human metabolism is quite a bit more nuanced that either side's contentions.
I find this problem all the time where a person talks about.. Wow, keto is great and carbs are bad.. And when I ask to name 3 examples of those carbs. They never ever say. Well, Broccoli or Carrots are bad. They always use Processed Carbs as an example. Like that is deceiving information. That's why we call it "Processed food". But that is typical propaganda
These are the 3 carbs ketos and carnivores know: sugar, french fries and milkshakes. Which lead to the conclusion that carbs are bad. Science is strong in this one
@@niken538 I'm curious where you got this idea, because I don't get it from any of the low carb advocates. They're talking about sugars and starches of all kinds.
I don't eat junk food, I cook nearly everything I have eat from scratch (many bean dishes) and have done so for over a decade now so I am not your typical junk food American, yet my lifelong struggle with hypoglycemia made it difficult to keep my weight in a healthy range and tearing my ACL forced me to give up jogging and martial arts which did not help, I did my first keto cycle about five years ago and I dropped over 20lbs in the first month so implying that keto is only beneficial for people who are on the SAD diet is simply inaccurate. Since then I have cycled keto every year and every time weight drops by at leased 20lbs although that does seem to plateau for me after about 45 days and 25-30lbs which is considerable since my carbed weight is around 200-205lbs. I don't do the semi or fully carnivore versions of keto that many "experts" recommend, most of my fats come from nuts/seeds/avocados and the olive oil I use on my salads but I do eat some fatty fish such as mackerel and sardines for my omega 3s and fat soluble vitamins. Leafy greens and other non-starchy vegetables make up the bulk of my diet by weight/volume. I found by trial and error that this approach works best for me. Not saying that keto is some magic diet but it certainly can be a game changer for those predisposed to blood glucose issues, vegans should not attempt to discredit ketosis as a means to control unstable blood glucose and the fits of hunger that can come with it.
Re: Genes vs environment as causal to excess corpulence: as a woman who was hoodwinked by the diet industry into weighing 280 lbs and currently is nder 200 and still losing on WFPB life, i submit a single piece of evidence. No one ever left a prison or concentration camp still fat. Doesn't happen.
What gets me pissed off when people refer to simple refined carbs ; Carbohydrate, and Natural, untouched , unprocessed carbs ; as carbs. I try to speak as proper as I can, but dam, most people don't know how to describe anything they speak of. I ate potatoes, Sweet potatoes, tomatoes, carrots and letntils, for a month and lost alot of weight. I was shocked. Most plant foods has a small quantity of calories in comparison to process food at the same volume.
I have noticed this on almost every "diet" talk. The differentiation between SIMPLE carbs and COMPLEX carbs. Of course your AIC will go down if you eliminate carbs. Duh. Insulin is there to react to carbs. But doing that does not fix underlying type 2 diabetes, the mechanism of insulin resistance. I have found that complex carbs in their unprocessed state -- particularly whole grains like millet and kasha -- curb sugar cravings. Nothing else has worked for me, but that.
i agree. i have been keto for years. never felt better. all biomarkers improved. im afraid your words fall on deaf ears in this video's audience though, friend
@@jamestriolo5702 No it doesn't fall on deaf ears. I'm curious to hear about your results. How's your serum triglyceride levels? LDL? HDL? Blood pressure? Do you exercise consistently? How much fiber do you eat? I have an MSc in Food Technology, and my studies included a fair share of nutrition and biochemistry. Everything I know in the field supports that a whole food plant-based diet is one of the best ways to improve most people's health. I'm concerned about the health of one's gut microbiome after a long-term ketogenic diet.
@@bkemeny92 Diabetes, familial hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL, and high blood pressure run rampant in my family. Eating a standard american diet, as a kid my triglycerides would always measure over 200. Clear signs of energy partitioning problems. My uncle passed away on dialysis a few years back, my father and sister are on medications to regulate these issues. I also showed signs of liver damage (elevated ALT), my sleep and bowel movements were very irregular and infrequent, I had dandruff. All of the aforementioned issues have been resolved since incorporating the combination of a HFLC diet and intermittent fasting. I eat a fair amount of fiber from sources like avocado, psyllium husk, cruciferous veg, fermented greens like olives, asparagus, saukraut/kimchi, and nuts. i agree with you about the importance of the gut microbiome and i feel its very easy for people to fall into a rut that doesnt support a healthy one. I don't follow a "lazy" version of the diet which i feel is potentially unhealthy. I eat well aged cheeses, plenty of seafood like shellfish and salmon. I exercise regularly, used to do more resistance training, now more cardiovascular work. my hdl went up, closer to the healthy range but still needs work. my ldl went up but as we know, it is a transporter for fat so if fat is my primary source of energy, this is expected. the reason this doesnt concern me is, as we also know, ldl poses no threat to producing plaque if there is no means for glycation/oxidation of these particles. I had a fractionation test done which proved the ldl particles were larger in size and less in quantity. i have a lot to say on the topic but i want to clarify my stance on the subject as a whole; different diets obviously work better for different people, phenotypic variations make us the diverse species we are. i dont think a low carb is for everyone. i am interested in going vegan for 6 weeks at some point in the not too distant future to give it a fair opinion and have no animosity towards anyone that follows a plant-based lifestyle. the way i see it is, anthropologically speaking, it makes sense that we would consume animal products to some extent. this does not take into account moral considerations
@@jamestriolo5702 Thank you for your detailed and kind reply! I'm glad you're thriving, and sorry about your uncle. I wholeheartedly agree that we're diverse, and that one needs to take into account their own metabolic quirks.
That's seven countries' study BTW... just saying. Ancel cherry picked the favourites. Why don't you talk about Dr Yudkin's book!? "Pure white and deadly"? Dr Yudkin's research was ignored. Should have mentioned this Mr Alec Smart!
Keto/ carnivore is the proper human diet. I watched this video out of curiosity, although I don’t agree with the author. A plant based diet is a sugar based diet. Besides the oxalates in plants which are dangerous, a sugar based diet causes inflammation; inflammation is the root of all disease. Even most cancer requires sugars to grow. If you look inside the mouth of someone that eats sugar (plants and grains) as their main source of energy, you will notice decay, gingivitis, plaque build up, etc…. Just think what these foods do to your insides!! It’s better to choose to eat like a lion instead of a pig ~ save the grains and plants for the livestock we eat daily. Humans are omnivores; this means we hunt when we can, but if we don’t acquire meat, our backup system can convert sugar to energy. Living long term on sugars will destroy your pancreas, and in turn your entire endocrine system. These are just the facts. Humans evolved eating primarily meat; historically, agriculture is a pretty recent phenomenon. Take this video with a grain of salt and understand that if a sugar based diet were healthy, the population would be getting healthier. This is obviously not the case. Processed food is horrible for anyone not just because of seed oils and other chemicals, but through the simple fact that it is sugar you are eating. The sugars in “healthy” grains and plants are really no different for your body than simple cane sugar in a donut. I understand people have beliefs and feelings about eating meat, but that doesn’t mean the alternative is better for your health. Humans are predators ~ we must eat like a predator. These are just the science based facts. I hope you all have a wonderful day!
It's insane to say that animals hurt the environment. Most farms that raise animals do so on land that wouldn't even be farmable for agriculture. In addition, a proper farm regenerates the land and removes greenhouse gasses. What?
I did watch this video to the end but admit my mind was already made up. I'm overeducated myself but nothing in my academic career has anything to do with nutrition so IQ and good intentions don't cut it for me. I was raised in Canada by two people who loved each other and me and my sis, had survived WW2 with honour and suffering and came from different European countries and loved to cook. Wonderbread was something you rolled into pellets to throw at your sister when you were six. There was meat but it was all home cooked .... when I was really young in Toronto in the early 60s if you were down at Kensington market and wanted a chicken they were alive and you had to pluck it yourself not to mention the fish my Dad caught you would happen upon in the bathtub but I digress. Point is it was plant strong so going vegan for me was not a big leap. My sis watched some horrifying docs about factory faming and unlike me had zero interest in preparing meals also trouble with legumes so she and her accommodating husband switched to grassfed everything not thinking of methane gas and slaughter houses ... I really think Colette wanted to believe that people snuck up behind happy turkeys and banged them on the head at Thanksgiving time ... result? Gout!!! 2 really healthy mindful people one year in in their early 40s.
For what it’s worth: Carbohydrates and sugars, particularly fructose, can contribute to the development of gout in several ways: 1. Increased Uric Acid Production: Fructose, a type of sugar found in many sweetened beverages and foods, is metabolized in the liver where it can lead to increased production of uric acid. High levels of uric acid in the blood can lead to the formation of urate crystals in joints, causing gout. 2. Insulin Resistance: A diet high in simple carbohydrates and sugars can contribute to obesity and insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can impair the kidney’s ability to excrete uric acid, leading to its accumulation in the body. 3. Alcohol Consumption: Alcoholic beverages, especially beer, are high in purines and can also contribute to increased uric acid levels. Furthermore, alcohol metabolism can compete with uric acid excretion, exacerbating the problem. 4. Weight Gain: High intake of carbs and sugars often leads to weight gain. Being overweight is a significant risk factor for gout, as it increases the body’s production of uric acid and decreases its excretion. 5. Purine-Rich Foods: Some carbohydrate-containing foods are also high in purines, which break down into uric acid in the body. However, not all carbohydrate sources are high in purines.
LOL. Sure Gary. Except, my boyfriend automatically lost 27 kilos on a whole foods plant based diet, his cholesterol halved, and all his blood works are excellent and he has been keeping the weight off effortlessly. Sorry, nobody can tell me that peer reviewed science is wrong.
@@Poecilia1963 No, I'm not "suggesting" that. I'm saying that supplementing is the only guaranteed way to have healthy levels of B12, and this is true also for farmed animals. Despite what many people believe, nutritional deficiencies are very common in Nature.

Came here in good faith as someone who has managed to lose a lot of weight (100 pounds) and manage my weight for two years after following the LCHF principles and was surprised by the comment section as well. Taubes along with Jason Fung are doing great work to help obese and overweight people who have tried everything by encouraging keto and fasting to repair our hormonal imbalances. Not surprised about how tone deaf many of the comments are in regards to the points about socio-economic status (linked to consumption of cheaper processed foods) and patterns of eating which are derived from parents (video tried to twist this claim into eugenics rather than looking at it through a sociological lens which is another fail) + lack of food education (if they read Taubes they would know he absolutely despises sugar) which are more relevant to obesity than simply doing keto or vegan lifestyles. A lot of insecurity in this community.
@@BigV24 Well said Will. This might stick in their vegan gullets, but Taubes, Fung, Dr Berg, Dr Berry and many others out there are actively saving people's lives with ...er ... Because you shouldn't have to risk your own health and well-being in order to lose some weight. And because it is promoted and pushed using lies and cynical deliberate misinformation.
@@mushypeasplease8872 maybe this particular doctor is using lies, but there are other honest doctors advising how to follow a Keto diet and providing truthful information. I agree that none should put their at risk to lose weight, but a healthy way to lose weight can be by using a healthy keto diet. That's my point.
Because keto is not healthy in the long term for health and for the planet. Keto is not the natural diet for humans. Keto will clog your arteries so if you want to die early and trash this planet, keep the keto.
If your wife loses 1kg in 4 days its very unhealthy, its too fast. And there are many other things to consider than weight. Yes keto will make you lose weight. But in the long run it will be unhealthy
I know that is hard for all of you to see that there are other healthy way of eating rather than plant based. I understand, I was there also. It is easier for you to follow the same doctors, read the same sources that refer to the same studies, and have the same interpretations. However, there are in fact other healthy food out there which combined with plant-based food can be good for your health. Imagine that I compare a healthy Keto diet vs a junk vegan diet, which you would think it would be more beneficial. Anyway, my opinion is that you shouldn't try to debunk other diets by comparing to their worst version. If you're happy with your diet, good for you, but don't spend much of your days hating other foods. There are no studies that show that a healthy Keto diet can be harmful in the long term, so I don't know what you talking about. I have no dog in this fight, but this review is also a bit misleading, particularly the analysis of The Practice of Endocrinology. In fact, on p.80, Taubes specifically characterizing the book as stating "You can eat as much as you like of the following foods . . . 5. Fruit, if unsweetened or sweetened with saccharin, except bananas or grapes." On balance, the book is aimed at regulating insulin production and avoiding insulin resistance. Presumably, this can be achieved by following a keto diet or by following a plant-based diet with a high amount of insoluble fiber. Rather than fighting about which way is better, wouldn't it be more productive to identify and attack the underlying cause(s) of the American obesity epidemic (insulin resistance, perhaps? ) and empower people with a variety of tools to address the cause?
What a nice essay! I cut my teeth on despising Gary Taubes hating by watching hours of videos in a UA-cam playlist by Plant Positive called "Nutrition Past and Future" The guy who did the vids is totally anonymous, even though his voice is very unique.
My grandpa died at 99 smoking precisely 12 cigarettes a day. Guess this demonstrates smoking is healthy. We should all start smoking, right? Anecdotal evidences are dumb.
Gary Taubes' arguments have been widely accepted and Ancel Keys is increasingly discredited, even by the American Heart Association. You can get healthy by being a careful vegan or by doing keto. Much depends on your starting point. This video is poorly informed.
Is Gary Taubes right about sugar & carbs?

Brofessor Gary Taubes brofesses among some of the best brofessors to ever walk the planet.
One study from 1927 tho
Taubes admits that his wife refuses to let him manage their kids' diets.
LOL interesting.

Same for me my carb intake is 250 - 300 grams per day. And after a bit more then a year the abbs are starting to show!
Same here, I eat an absolute ton of carbs. My 3 meals a day are carb rich. Mostly from whole grains like spelt, rice, quinoa and legumes.
Woooohoo!

Plant based is so good you need to supplement with a B12 pill. So healthy
Is it just me or does it seem like Gary tabs is having a hard time breathing and doesn’t seem very healthy? I have to admit that 15 years ago I read his book and was absolutely convinced. He is an amazing writer and a very convincing writer. But I’m back in my plant-based ways and feel amazing and at 50 just got great results from my doctor so I guess we will just keep on Rollin and see what happens in the nutrition world
yeah, the breathlessness was the first thing I noticed.

When I compare the physical appearance of Gary Taubes to, let's say, Dr. Greger, Dr. Esselstyn or Dr. McDougall, there are similarities and differences:
All of them look slim and slender.

Interesting! Thanks for the comment.
So, butter makes your pants fall off, but not as fast as broccoli? ;)
that's right maybe you should try it
I find this problem all the time where a person talks about..
That's the thing. Defining what a carb actually means seems critical to me. It's such a blanket term, like protein. Or fat.
Appreciate your approach and candor and the information is spot on. Keep up the great work

I ate potatoes, Sweet potatoes, tomatoes, carrots and letntils, for a month and lost alot of weight. I was shocked. Most plant foods has a small quantity of calories in comparison to process food at the same volume.
Totally agree - carbs are often never explained properly; such a difference between a doughnut and a parsnip !!

What?
IDK, he gives me zombie vibes. A common trend that I see with low carb diets.
RIGHT? He just seems so stolid... Dr. Greger is dynamite when he presents!
@@HarbingerBK Greger looks like undeveloped old man with skinny fat around his belly

For what it’s worth:
Carbohydrates and sugars, particularly fructose, can contribute to the development of gout in several ways:
How does he get his B12?
@@kaldobie5994 From supplement, exactly like meat-eaters. Farmed animals are given many supplements, B12 included.
@@Corilo91 Are you suggesting there are no natural sources of B12?
@@Poecilia1963 No, I'm not "suggesting" that. I'm saying that supplementing is the only guaranteed way to have healthy levels of B12, and this is true also for farmed animals. Despite what many people believe, nutritional deficiencies are very common in Nature.
@@Corilo91 Given that we survived for hundreds of millions of years without supplements - whether in the tropics where there's lots of plant food, or the far north, where there are none - maybe our notion of what is a "healthy level" is not accurate.
What's the address of that digital library?
Taubes is an example of the admonition offered by the redoubtable Sir Francis Bacon that man prefers to believe what he prefers to be true.
You do you. Not nearly the work Taubes has put in.
Gary Taubes is giving me Owen Wilson energy
Owen wilson is way cooler
Why? What's wrong with Owen? I actually waited RIGJHT behind him in line in a VEGAN restaurant in Hong Kong.
You'd think with all Gary's STEM based degrees that he would know how to look at all data, research papers, etc. and then form a conclusion.
He is just bandwagon thinker that enjoys hearing good news about his bad habits...even if the news isn't actually good.
But Mediterranean diets are not low fat. They eat plenty of animal and sea foods.
He’s trying to convince us it wasn’t so.
There's no such thing as an essential carb.
Please don’t do that to chocolate cake anymore. Gary Taub’s sounds like Darth Vader…is he okay??
I so hope Taubes sees this video.
His wife saw it on my channel and left comments. She's great and a respected book author. She defended Gary in a respectable way and pointed out no one had heard of Covid when the book was written.
Keto is terrible, go vegan
I was 3/4 of the way through the video before I noticed the mug... 😂🤣
wow amazing job!
I've just discovered why there is barely any challenge to the content of this video in the comments. It's clearly because dissenting voices , no matter how polite, are removed like mine just has been. Why would that be necessary if the person in the video had a case? Well it wouldn't be would it, it's necessary because he DOESN'T have a case. And this message isn't aimed at the other commenters in this comment section because they'll never get to see it. No, it's addressed directly to the censoring freak in the video.
MEAT and FAT (and the exclusion of almost all blood glucose/insulin raising carbs of course).
I was at the upper end of the pre-diabetic spectrum, which is hba1c 42 - 48, i.e. my hba1c result was 47, which is a hairs breadth away from type 2 diabetes, the chronic disease that leads to heart attacks, strokes and dementia etc... and through a Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting learned from the above, along with a bit of resistance training, my hba1c is now 37 and still falling after just 8 months.
I've also lost 3 stone (42IB) as well. I've seriously never felt better and propagandised idiots like those on this thread aren't going to stop me munching away on what my ancestors munched on.
The disastrous transition from hi fat/low carb diets to the polar opposite, i.e. low fat/hi carb diets in around 1980 which literally turned the food pyramid upside down based on a flawed, cherry picking study by Ansel Keys is responsible for the tsunami of obesity and diabetes that we see in the West today.
This is a recent picture of me at 63 years old and I'm improving all the time, and with no TRT/HRT I hasten to add...

How come Africans and asians eat a lot of carbs but yet, not obese as America who also eat a lot of carbs?.
Check out the carbs they eat. Big difference.
@@carrie6743 exactly. I'm African, Nigerian and l live in here. And I eat and also observe and study our foods, and we have carbs like yam, cassava, potatoes, rice, beans, plantain, corn, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc although the processed food industry is growing rapidly and many people are shifting to these processed carbs, especially the middle/upper class people, and ironically they are the most obese compared to others.lol
Americans eat processed foods which also tend to be full of saturated fat and cholesterol

12:04 "It got easiER as I learned principles of healthy eating but change has only come through hard work and time."
Truer words have hardly ever been spoken. It is *possible* and it is *doable* but those words are NOT synonyms of easy and/or fast. And: while easiER *can* mean easY, it almost never actually does. It merely means 'less difficult'.

Thank you for sharing. I pray someday these so-called health groups will be good enough to admit their mistakes and help others to well Utilizing a whole plant-based diet.

My wife is in a keto diet for 4 days, she lost 1 kg. I'm on whole food plant based diet, I don't lose weight. Well, I don't wanna lose weight either. I reckon my diet is more balanced, but hers is also pretty good. Those are facts. Healthy Keto is alright. I don't know why the plant based people waste so much energy to go against keto diet. It works, just digest it and move on
Because you shouldn't have to risk your own health and well-being in order to lose some weight.
Open your mind a little bit, and maybe read other sources from time to time.
I have no dog in this fight, but this review is also a bit misleading, particularly the analysis of The Practice of Endocrinology. In fact, on p.80, Taubes specifically characterizing the book as stating "You can eat as much as you like of the following foods . . . 5. Fruit, if unsweetened or sweetened with saccharin, except bananas or grapes."
On balance, the book is aimed at regulating insulin production and avoiding insulin resistance.
Amen
Taubes looks very healthy. Why are so many vegans dropping out of the diet having got sick?
great video!
What a nice essay! I cut my teeth on despising Gary Taubes hating by watching hours of videos in a UA-cam playlist by Plant Positive called "Nutrition Past and Future" The guy who did the vids is totally anonymous, even though his voice is very unique.
His voice IS quite odd, but his information was terrific.
My grandpa lived to 98, lean and active, eating mainly steak and buttermilk.
So good
