    Thanks for this great review. Having had this lens for a couple of years now, this lens literally made all my other lenses obsolete (with exception of my Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 which is great for close ups at events)! Like you, when I first picked this up, my first thought was, no way I'm gonna get this monster of a lens, defeats the purpose of micro four thirds. Then I made the mistake of trying it, and oh my goodness, the photo quality was literally perfect - sharp, bright, fast - everything a hobbyist photographer like myself desired. So I traded about 3 of my other lenses, and bought this instead, and never regretted it. Truly the one lens that rules them all, all f1.7 goodness!

      @@jinwan3088 you’re welcome, thanks! Yeah, I don’t need an electronic f1.7 prime without this range anymore. This one’s delivers. Had a 25mm f1.7 which I gave to my 6y old son. Only using cinelenses since electronic ones are obsolete indeed. Maybe the 25-50mm f1.7 would be nice though.

    When it came out I was highly irritated by the size and price. I thought that some lens engineers just wanted to show their skills for a niche lens in a niche system, maybe useful for some professional video production. At that time I was doing only photography with the GX8 by using different primes with different characters because shooting with a FF & 24-70mm seemed much to boring to me. But with the G9 and GX9 I split my arsenal into different camera systems: one small with primes (eg GX9 & Panaleica 15mm, 1.7) and with the G9 I entered the world of zooms, with the 50-200mm and the 10-25mm. When travelling I actually use both systems because there so many situations where you need a small camera. But generally the G9(ii)&10-25 has become my standard when size does not matter. And like you’ve mentioned the ergonomics of this lens are great. Really feels light or well balanced. In the meantime I’ve also been working with a FF & 24-70mm combo, the Lumix S5ii & a Sigma, which feels to heavy for long days. But the better FF opponent to compare with should be the FF Panasonic 20-60mm which is really light and small for such a zoom lens. The smaller aperture can be overcompensated with higher ISO performance of the S5ii, and in terms of the depth of field the crop factor comes in. Today I guess there just smaller things differentiating between a MFT with this wonderful 10-25 lens and a FF system and the price is none of them.

    • @KevinvanDiest
      @KevinvanDiest  7 місяців тому +1

      Well said. I agree. But for video the amount of light you’ll get with a fixed f1.7 is way better than the variable one on the 12-60mm on FF. So the DOF maybe kinda compatible due to crop factor, the amount of light isn’t. So big advantage of the MFT.
      In my upcoming video this is quite obvious, there I’ll be using the 12-60mm FF(Bcam) next to a T2 lens on MFT(Acam). So be sure to watch that and let’s continue this talk over there then. See ya

      It took people awhile to realize that you can have 2 different m43 bodies. A G9/2 with the 10-25mm f/1.7 and 50-200mm f/2.8-4 will do everything PHOTO AND VIDEO.
      Then use a smaller body with just primes mainly for photography. M43 is incredibly versatile and nothing it can't do. You can even use focal reducers if you want that shallower depth of field on wide angles.

    I bought it three years ago. Became instantly my daily driver. Does a great job on weddings both on my G9 bodies and now on my G9m2. Its bigger sister, the 25-50/1.7 is even a bit bulkier, but is also a great lens for those special situations, when the 42.5/1.2 offers not enough flexibility.

    What I like about this lens is the contrast and local contrast, very high even wide open. It really adds depth to the pictures. It's like a set of Zeiss Batis 20-50 f3.4 FE primes but with slightly worse colors in my opinion.

    Hey, I bought a second hand Lumix 10-25 and noticed how loud it is when zooming, changing aperture, manual focusing but worst is the auto focus. Camera audio is unusable, sound like a droid from Star Wars, constantly beeping and staticky. If I use a mic on top it is much quieter but not silent. All of it can be heard in person too. Did you ever notice anything alike or is mine faulty? Thanks

    It is great but too big and too expensive for my use. You would usually buy it with its sister lens the 25-50mm which is similarly sized and the end of the usual focal range . We're talking about 5000 canadian dollars (with taxes). That's three times more than having the Lumix 9mm and the Sigma Contemporary trio (16mm, 30mm and 56mm) which all are amazingly sharp, fast and render colors so well. Of course if you have a big rig, constantly switching lenses is not an option. Especially if the lenses vary a lot in size. Those two zooms are easier to use with focus motors and rigs. They are aimed at professional videographers. If you work lighter and do both photo and video these zooms with the already bulky G9 II and GH6 are going against the whole idea of choosing micro four thirds for its smaller form factor.

    • @KevinvanDiest
      @KevinvanDiest  7 місяців тому +1

      What you are seeing in true. However, the whole reason and purpose of these fast zooms is the practicality and diversity in usage. Of course it's bigger then primes, however it's all in one lens. This is indeed not the budget way to go, it's the practical way.
      Compact wise ...well, Gh4, GH5, GH6 kinda have the same size. It's the fact that full frame bodies are getting smaller nowadays. The S5 body is smaller that the GH6. So MFT is getting bulky, it remains the same. And to be honest, the 'bulky' 10-25mm is smaller and lighter than the FF equivalent. Compare it for yourself, this 10-25mm is very very light weight!
      Talking rigs, yes than this is the winner. Keep all the motors in place, even when swopping to it's sister;)
      So again, if it's the budget then go for primes, if it's the practicality this zoom is your best choice.
      Good talk!

      The lens is big but not so heavy. Also the idea of choosing m43 is not only smaller form factor, it is also the IBIS, the rolling shutter and the fact that the format need less demanding processor power.
      Another thing to consider is how the lens draw, some lenses like the 10-25mm and even more the 25-50mm have really great output, and it's not only about sharpness.

    • @KevinvanDiest
      @KevinvanDiest  5 місяців тому +2

      @@slows728 totally agree! The weight feels like a prime, but now you have several-in-one. The system is great, still prefer it above full frame, even though I have both. Now there’s even the new GH7!!

Just think about this; I also got FF with F1.8 and F2.8 lenses ..and still I prefer this F1.7 in most of my cases (video & film). @@KevinvanDiest His point about f3.5 is that the depth of field on MFT for 1.7 is equivalent to f3.4 on full frame. But the light gathering is still 1.7, so it's really a fair statement - just relevant to the depth of field. I have the 25-50mm and it's wonderful.

      For example on a mft a 25mm is equivalent to a 50mm, the 50mm is going to have the bokeh of a 25mm instead of a 50mm. Because a 25mm is a 25mm no matter the crop so if you was to put a 25mm 1.4 on a full frame and the same on a mft they would have the same depth of field only difference is on a mft it’s a 50mm.

    • @joshuaspop8865
      @joshuaspop8865 2 місяці тому +1

      Drives me crazy when people don’t get this right.
      F1.7 is f1.7 for exposure, no matter what the sensor size is.
      Yes, depth of field on MFT at 1.7 is 3.4, but that’s not always a bad thing.
      Many times, when shooting in low light, a full frame lens at f1.7 (1.8) will not have enough depth of field, so the lens may have to be stopped down to f2.8 to get more of the scene in focus.
      Because of that, you’d more than likely have to raise the iso to keep shutter speeds up.
      On a MFT 1.7 lens, you get the same amount of light as 1.7 on full frame, but you get 3.4 depth of field, so even more is in focus than a full frame lens at 2.8, but you get the light of 1.7.
      In this case, raising the iso on the full frame kit has virtually eliminated the IQ advantage.
      So many just don’t get it.
