f5.6 is my favorite f-stop (1/8 sec, iso 100). Glad to see someone else using it. Shot an entire 7-minute film with that exposure, some 180 shots or so. The lens was a kit zoom, 18-55mm. Not the sharpest glass, but it did everything that was needed. That was the first time ever working with a DSLR, and a software interface closed the knowledge gap. Had that camera shooting stop motion in the first week after 2 years of pre-production.

Good video I liked it a lot How do you do the stop motion part like how do you make your characters move do you take a picture move it take a picture and then do it again and how do you make sure you’re not going to far?
Well I'm doing at least 1 thing right. I always duct tape everything as tight as possible. Trial and error has already taught me that hot glue and duct tape is LIFE in stop motion LOL
So many great tips that I haven't found elsewhere. Thank you! I built a lighting grid in my home stop motion studio using pvc and rigging hardware. It allows me to use my big Aputure lights with large softboxes. However, I've found that I want my lights closer than what that system can offer (8' ceilings). So I either end up raising the table with the animation stage, which crowds my working space or using my smaller desk can clamp lights that I was trying to graduate from. Do you have any thoughts on using those large light sources in stop motion or how I might get more value out of my fancy ceiling grid?
Thumbs up on creating the grid that's awesome. Do avoid raising your table. As you know, stop motion is time consuming work bent over a table. Best to have the table at a height that's good for the your back, as you only have one. That means, lowering the grid or adding poles that hang from the grid and you attach the lights to them. In the past, I've rigged grids off of 4 heavy light stands so we could raise and lower it for table top lighting needs.
Here's what's crazy. That figurine is supposed to be me. A friend made it with her 3D printer. You can't see it in the video but the base has a 20 sided die on it. It was a thank you gift for dungeon mastering a game she's been in with us for over 2 years.

How is the bulb in 1:24 being dimmed? Does that light socket have a way of dimming bulbs?
The light is attached to a dimmer. You can buy them or wire up a household dimmer, we have a video on that.

Is it safe to put a bare bulb in the box? Do you have to worry about heat?
Depends on the type of bulb. LEDs give off low heat and may be fine. Tungsten bulbs can get very hot though.
Can you recommend a lens to help stopmo shots be more dynamic. My stock Nikon D60 55mm lens seems flat.
Lighting creates dynamic or flat shots, not the lens. Work on lighting and composition. We have videos on both.
