    You are amazing, Amy! I am always impressed with how you can control your stitch length. Maybe with enough practice I will be half as good.

      If I can do it, you can too! Keep practicing and look for ways to make sure your set up is as smooth as possible.

    I have the ruler foot for the Janome foot set, but I don't normally use it for free motion. I use the open toe foot that fits on the bottom also. I wonder why you use the ruler foot? Just curious.

    My long arm for my frame will be here this week. I have been free motion quilting on my midarm on the table. Should I get a quilt top and backing and batting to practice on first before I do an actual quilt?

      @AmyQuilts  9 років тому +1

      Definitely practice first! I don't use a long arm or frame system, but I've played around on others' machines and transitioning from moving the quilt to moving the machine takes practice. It feels very out of control to me compared to quilting on my sewing machine.

      Amy Johnson Love my long arm on my frame. No more basting or pinning, freedom quilting I call it. I still loved quilting on my midarm from my table. Not knocking it at all. But I really love long arm quilting, and can still use your videos for this. Thanks again Amy.

      Ann Philbeck Well, I learned a lot from watching long arm quilter videos and use their techniques on my Janome, so I completely understand!

    Hi, i just began free motion quilting .
    I just don’t understand one thing and nobody talks about it, maybe you could help me.
    When you do free motion quilting.
    Your eyes, where do they look ?
    Is it the needle?
    Is it the ring ?
    I just get lost ...🤷🏼‍♀️
    Thank you
    Sofie 🌹🌹

      Liguorienne at first you'll probably stare at the needle, but it's best if you start looking "ahead" to where you are going. Much like driving a car!

      Amy Johnson ok
      But the ring where the needle is going true, 😅 doesn’t help to see my drawings
      But i will persiste
      Thanks again

    thank you for your prompt reply to my last comment! I have a question, I am new to fee motion and have finally discovered that shiny sulky embroidery thread 40wt. seems to work well in my machine, however when I use black or dark brown it seems to look flatter on the practice quilt. the light colors look beautiful. So I cant figure out why the difference?
    I also like thicker 30 wt. threads but they too are not created equal. What do you think?

    • @AmyQuilts
      @AmyQuilts  6 років тому

      The dark colors have more pigment in them, so they are the tiniest bit thicker which may affect tension, but likely it's just the effect of the darker colors absorbing more light and looking flat. (Try photographing a black quilt sometime...flat, flat, flat.) I too love thicker threads like 30 weight when they run well, but they can be tricky. Rayon can be fragile too. That's why I love mt polyester embroidery threads like Glide.

    Amy, what kind of machine do you use and do you free motion on large quilts with it? I'm having a hard time with the weight of a large quilt top be able to FM on my home machine.

    • @AmyQuilts

      I use Janome machines. In this video, I'm using a 6600P, but I've been using bigger machiines since this was shot. I do large quilts and I puddle and smoosh the quilt around the needle. Arranging the quilt in "hills and valleys" allws the outer areas to stay still while I can easily move the area around the needle.
