I have no idea how this version of Hades can possibly fit in with what is supposed to happen later in the story regarding the Di Angelo family, his anger towards Zeus and the rest of his family, the oracle’s curse, etc. Are they going to change all of that as well?

I work at a school specifically for children with disabilities (mostly emotional and behavioral) but yes a child wandering is normal behavior for children with ADD or ADHD, and him being on the roof is 100% the schools fault. In fact , Percys mom would be able to report it to the school board and everyone who was watching him at that time would be fired.
The fact a school like that would reject Percy is hilariously false as Percy’s symptoms are mild at least. We face 100% worse on a daily basis and never once do these kids get kicked out. And if needed it would be to another program possibly out of the city. Definitely not homeschooling.

Or maybe Percy managed to get on the roof by climbing up the walls or dodging. Schools have many locked doors between the student areas and the roof. How did Percy get past them? That's not the school's fault. If someone REALLY wants to get past security they will. How did Percy get out from under a teacher's supervision? That is the school's fault. And the school just made up a reason to kick him out because he's a liability. Sally could sue but what would that get her? Percy still needs to go to school and no school will take him.

The show really defanged Percy's troubled past. In the book, Percy legitimately caused serious accidents at every school he attended prior to the series (or at least, that's what the Mist has people believe).
The show, meanwhile, expects us to believe that Percy got sent to a school for troubled kids for having an overactive imagination.

My roommate had an idea, because I thought the house of Hades looked really boring without any gold or jewels, he said it may be because it is summer. That without Persephone there, hades is gloomy but in TLO when she is there the whole "god of riches" thing will come up and the underworld will look beautiful.

I hate how every god is just some guy... Ares in the books comes with this aura of rage, the red eyes and the comically large bike. In the show he's just a guy, in a normal sized harley. Hermes doesn't have any cool gadget, nor does he show his snakes and his scepter. It's literally just Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hephaestus doesn't have any scars and deformities. He's literally Santa Claus in a suit. Hades in the books is in a throne of bones and uses a suit made of souls. He's scary. I’ll be perfectly honest, I didn’t really like the underworld design either. It’s pretty accurate and this isn’t much of a complaint exactly, just how I personally see it. Based on Nico’s love for it and Persephones residents in it, it needs to have the capability to be seen as beautiful and my idea was kind of a vast, bioluminescent abyss kind of vibe, where it’s pops of color in darkness, and could be seen as intimidating or mesmerizing as it needs to be according to the situation.

I feel your disappointment in this episode, and I was so hoping that we would get a 20ft Hades dressed in his regular robes and he commanded authority and hates his brothers but not for the reasons that other characters give us like Hades being jealous of Poseidon and Zeus because they got the sky and sea. I wanted to see like the wealth of like millions of dollars of gems and the power of having entire armies of dead soldiers from every century or year. I wanted his rant and complaints of always being thought of as the bad guy and the little comment about Charon and his silk suits. I wanted to see him get pissed off and threaten a zombie apocalypse because Hades is fed up with never getting any sympathy from his family and the overall portrayal of him being a tragic character. Like if they could've done this and done it perfectly and well, I would've given it a ten out of ten despite the exposition dump of Procrustes and the failure of capturing Charon's character.

    • @HeartDAlyson

I feel that without those little details, they just feel like generic characters without a personality. Which probably suffered because of the limited episodes and the odd length of each episode. If they made it 10 episodes with 1 hour each, they probably would have had a much more even pacing. Old reference but it feel like the series was hit with the Nolan ray. All fun character traits are stripped and everything serious could always be more serious.

I honestly could not believe that that was supposed to be Hades when he first entered the scene. I had no idea who else it could've been, but the show has already pulled so much out of its ass, I guess it wouldn't have surprised me if they'd randomly given a cameo to some minor cthonic god.
I almost get the vibe that Rick is overcorrecting for the movies. The movie played the Lotus Casino similarly to the book, so Rick did something completely new with it. The movie turned Hades into Satan, so Rick turned him into a softie. But the weird thing is that Procrustes, the guy guarding the entrance to the Underworld, is played by the same guy who played Charon, the guy who guarded the entrance to the Underworld, in the movie!

    • @tomhur1
      @tomhur1 7 місяців тому +31

Speaking of Charon and not doing what the movies did, that's another thing. The movies had Percy and co, bribe Charon to get to the underworld and are taken down the River Styx, so the show has Charon refuse the bribe and we get the Cerberus scene instead.

He's described as being 10 feet tall and dressed in ancient-looking black robes with a golden crown. It's clear that he truly doesn't care for the casual modernized appearance that the other gods do. He doe not participate in the living world above them. He speaks nobly and properly, like a king. He's a god that commands authority and respect just by being in the room, and his personality reflects his bitter but resigned outlook on his lot in life and his treatment by his brothers. He sits atop a throne of bones and his black robes seem to be woven with the souls of the damned.

However the way he wrote the book was treated more like a pg 13. The depiction of gabe was spot on in the first movie. They actually did curse in the book but didn’t show it. It’s stuff like that. The really deep connections with Percy and Grover. Like they die for one another. Chiron was everyone ones father figure. The thing behind the blue food. You don’t see that of kind emotional detail in Nickelodeon, Disney or any other pg series/movie. That’s why so many teens and adults like it. It is very possible to write a series and for it to be more attended for children, but not realizing that it reached out more to a somewhat bigger age group because of the content. So a lot fans expecting something different. Like twilight was originally posted to be for 9-12 year olds. However the entire series was no matter which book was not suitable for pre teen age group. Coralline was supposed to be a kids movie, rated pg. however almost every kid who watched at a pg age were scared from it. If they said like it's some unnamed part of Underwold, it'd be better in my opinion. I dont mind the idea of some changes to the story. I think we do benefit from small changes, like seeing hephaustus and having character development for Annabeth. However, i feel like there have been some major character rewriting and heavier story changes than necessary. Charon was entertaining for the 4 pages he was around. I legit thought we would have the full cerberus fetch scene. Hades himself threw me for an entire loop. I dont hate the design of the underworld, but I refuse to accept any claims that this is following the book when the only thing this episode had in common with the books were grover almost being dragged to tartarus and the pearls being used to leave.

She refuses help from Poseidon and Percy, because she knows that if her life is ever going to have meaning she has to live it herself, including finding the strength to leave Gabe herself. Being that close only to lose what mattered most to him in the end as the Prophecy stated. Gaining and losing that extra pearl so fast gave me narrative whiplash. Completely agree with the extra scenes, only needed the ones in the diner. I felt like Sally's strong reactions in the diner scenes were suppose to hint at Gabe's Abuse and Sally desperation to keep Percy away from him. I think I'd rather take this Hades over the villainous version from the movie, but you're right they swung too far the other way here. I think the main issue is that book was intended for 8-12 year olds. So they made the show for 7 year olds to kids who are older. Making it really pg. Every adult reacts to it on UA-cam keep saying the Sam thing “this is not a kids movie”

@@dazblue5515 Maybe some things would've been better, but there are some that you can hear from this videos and sound like just changing something.
The fact that Hades doesn't have a grudge with his brothers sounds like a big change, and that in the books the character could be more interesting, but for example the fact that he is suppose to be imponent doesn't really sound like it would change much, it just depend on what do you prefer.
I won't say the "if you don't like it, go read the books" because I felt the same about an adaptation in the past were they skip one of my favourite mini arcs from the novel, changed the order of things and some more, I just stop to watch it, if people liked it, I wasn't the one to tell something was wrong, it wasn't made for readers.
Probably if I read comics I would been mad with the MCU as a lot of fans were (well nowadays the quality of any project is debatable).
Although I now remembered another animated adaptation that in S2 make a new story, I read the novel and obviously saw that they were doing something new, I've seen a lot of people hate or dislike S2 just by the fact that it wasn't the same as the novel.
I didn't have a problem with the new story, they actually were setting a future figth based on the fact that the bad guy killed the main character's love interest mother, in that season she got to know that while in the novel the bad guy basically tells that info to the audience (I guess just so we get the idea that his evil, despite the fact that at that point we already knew more crimes of him), the characters never know that and it feels like a pointless plot point.
So I was open minded to it, but then in S3 they basically went back to the novel story and that basically became pointless filler.
It's posible that I was more open minded there becasue at that point I wasn't really enjoying the source story, since the author updated shorter and shorter chapters for months and most (if not all) were contradicting things from previous chapters, even things from 2 or 3 chapters before.
That isn't probably the same situation and probably not the best example; probably the books were good from start to finish, I'm just trying to say that changing or adding things doesn't need to be automatically wrong, but it's usually how people percieve it. I don't know how would I feel if I read the books prior to the show, I just know that there are things I dislike from the show and things that I enjoy.

I feel like this episode encompasses the mindset of Disney and studios right now. Change everything to please a different demographic, make the series shorter than what it should be (Seriously, you could've made this season 13 episodes long and not have it be so rushed), and only add small elements from the original source material because it'll make the book fans happy.

The reason Percy wasn’t admitted to that school was people think he has hallucinations. Percy can see through the Mist and see magical creatures that are invisible to mortals. Mortals think he is having visual hallucinations. The school is equipped to help neurodivergent kids but maybe they aren’t equipped to care for kids with conditions that severe. Percy drawing that Pegasus wasn’t the only time he saw something magical. I think in ep 1 they establish he is bullied in school cause people think he is crazy.
The flashbacks with Percy’s mom are meant to flesh out her character and show how hard a time she was having being a mom. Percy is her first kid. Being a single first time mom is difficult even if your kid isn’t a demigod. The flashbacks are meant to help empathize with her struggles. Maybe some parents could relate to her.
Overall, I would say the show is almost a reboot of Percy Jackson. Riordan has changed how he feels about his story since writing it over a decade ago. He has changed many of the elements because I think he feels he could have done the story better. Kinda reminds me of the recent Scott Pilgrim anime. I agree that I expected the show to be more accurate to the book but I am not necessarily opposed to making a remix/redo of this story. There are some elements I didn’t like, such as the “Clarisse is the lightning thief” red herring or how Hermes was handled or the pacing in the first 2 ep. However, I have still enjoyed the show overall so far. Personally, I think I am going to rewatch the whole season 1 after its done to see how I feel about the whole thing once it’s put together. Streaming shows tend to be very serialized so often the individual ep feel better all together than as separate parts.
I agree that the effects in this show are sometimes lacking. Something to keep in mind is effects heavy shows like this often need to cut corners due to time, budget or decisions by network higher ups. You can still criticize the show for the effects but I wouldn’t lay all the blame on the creators. Personally, effects usually aren’t the most important thing for me. I used to be a fan of the show The Flash and that show had terrible effects.

When I first saw him I was like ??? then I was like there's no way this is him. No actual way. I was muttering the whole time hoping it was someone else but nope. The characterisation would be fine if not for the existence of book Hades and it basically throws the whole issue of Hades and Nico under the bus. One more thing it feels like in this interpretation of Hades they are throwing it in our faces that he's a good guy. Like they're saying hey look at this guy and how he acts does that seem like someone who's a villain to you? Hades' intro in the books and how Percy thought he was the first God to actually look like a God, how Percy felt afraid with how imposing he is, and despite all that he still went against him. It showed Percy's character and in the show Percy standing up against this version of Hades felt less.

What happened to the loving, supportive, brave, patient mother Sally Jackson is? Why does Percy want to save this very fearful, impatient version of her? She literally said nothing and walked away when her son asked “why are you trying to get rid of me?” Wtf! No response at all?! You could’ve literally said anything, Sally, and that would’ve been better!
The same scenes could’ve happened! But Sally is always putting on a brave face in front of Percy, to NOT make him worry about him belonging at yet another school. Then in the dinner, when he asks, “why are you trying to get rid of me?” She looks heartbroken and says, “of course not, sweetheart. I’m sorry it’s complicated, but we will find a school that’s right for you.” Then she treats him to dessert and goes to order it.
Then she has her scene with Poseidon at the bar!
I still like the show, but these weird changes make me so glad the Percy Jackson musical exists. 😅. “Strong” is Sally’s best song. And it’s her talking with Percy about his struggles in school! Sally is nothing but patient and kind because she knows her son can’t help who he is. (Such a great metaphor for raising a kid with ADHD or other learning difficulties.) You literally HAVE to be patient in order for achievement to happen. It’s so weird to see Sally portrayed very fearful, but of the wrong things. 😅

I hope it's alright if I ask a couple questions I meant to ask during the livestream: 1) What're your favourite and least favourite Rick Riordan books; 2) What's something in the myths that you'd add to the books [any series, not just Percy Jackson]; and 3) What changes would you make to fix/improve Magnus Chase Book 2 and 3? I love Magnus and his friends so much, I wanted it to be as good as Percy Jackson. I really didn't like Loki's characterization as the series went on. He started off really mysterious and had a ton of potential to be a really nuanced and interesting version of Loki, but by the end of Book 2 he just has no sympathetic qualities whatsoever. Then there's that moment in Book 3 where I was so sure that Magnus, Sam, and Alex were going to end up in Helheim, but then they didn't, and that dangling plot thread has bothered me ever since. Also, the fact that we never get to see Baldur, and that he never had any children--total missed opportunity to have Alex befriend a child of Baldur. What a twist that could've been.

Maybe the main problem is that the series takes place after Baldur's death and Loki's imprisonment. If that hadn't happened yet, there would've been way more interesting possibilities. Anyway, ranting aside, what're your favourite parts? I love the bit in Book 3 when Aegir is trying to serve everyone dinner, and Magnus is desperately trying to bluff his way out of Hearth and Blitz being cooked for the main course, and Aegir's cook gets fed up with everyone having dietary restrictions. Alex's contribution is just 'and I have green hair!' It makes me laugh just thinking about it.

Five seconds in and I let out the biggest groan in my entire life. I could let it slide that they knew Medusa and I was a little annoyed at the Lotus Casino, but I was still ok. This episode where Percy knew Crusty was just too much. That one scene made me close to saying the movie was better. I’d pretty much threw out the idea that the show was gonna be a faithful adaptation as soon as it was announced and just wanted a good show but even that seems like too much for the creatives. I’d still give the show time and give final thoughts when the final episode is out. It’s clear all the cgi went to this and the final episode. For a place called the Underworld it sure is bright down there. Hades was miscast. The actor did fine but still a miscast. The flashbacks were fine and I didn’t mind them. Percy figuring out it was Kronos the entire time felt like a leap. Aside from Ares mentioning him once I feel like it’s kind of a leap for Percy to figure out Kronos is the one orchestrating everything. It sucks that the River Styx wasn’t shown and it’s actually one of the things the movie got right but it’s not too big of a deal for me. There are definitely writing issues. Like not even adaptation to a different medium just basic writing issues like having your characters figure things out for themselves. Maybe it’s a studio issue as well but it just feels like it gets basic things wrong at times.

I think whats a real big shame here is that Rick, because of all his big talk and his toxic comments regarding peoples criticisms (Valid or otherwise) along with all the critiques he had for the movies, has lost a lot of credibility. He was a big source of comfort for a lot of people going into this show to make them feel confident this was going to be good, despite any issues people may have had with casting, lack of costuming, etc
But then we got the show and its just... its a complete letdown. Its not even fun to watch for the most part and i dont see the upcoming fight with Ares really being any good. So. Meh. Ricks fucked his own rep with this show. If it had been more faithful AND a great show he wouldve been fine but, eh.

His most famous roles are as Gustav Graves in Die Another Day (2002) and as James McGraw/Captain Flint in Black Sails (2014-2017). I liked it, frankly. Minority opinion, I know. The relationship between Percy and his mother and Poseidon was really good. There’s a central idea to the season and the season arc, and last episode set this one up.

    • @Trintron46

By "It" do you mean the whole show or just this episode?
Cuz I've seen many viewers that absolutely loved the first 3 or 4 episodes and really didn't like the rest. But I feel like every episode since 5 has fallen further and further from the lore of the books, which is starting to really mess with the arcs that book readers absolutely loved and want to share with our friends that don't read.

    • @professorbutters
      @professorbutters 7 місяців тому

@@Trintron46Kind of both? Episode 6 was kind of weak, and I think that’s because it was setting up this episode. It was the first time we saw that being the parent of a mortal child hurts, and lead to this episode, finally, with Sally and Poseidon. Did you notice that every time Percy got closer to Sally and rescuing her, he got a bad memory of how painful their relationship was sometimes? It fed back to Annabeth’s statement that it’s not just godly parents who suck, and that human parents sometimes hurt their children, too. That meant that every moment that Harry got closer to Mom in Hades’ palace, he had to make a conscious decision.
Possibly Hades didn’t work for other people. It’s not like the book, for sure. But he can’t be trusted. The first thing he does is offer the kids pomegranate juice. He wants to KEEP them there. And the persona is more effective than the one in the novel *for what it does here,* which is that the impression Percy got of the terrifying ruler of the underworld wasn’t what he expected at all. I think that scary just like the novel might not have worked. If it’s not HIM, who the heck is it? (Incidentally, that image of Hades, including the jealous brother who would stop at nothing, was Chiron’s impression).
But for me, I like Greek mythology, and I didn’t grow up with Percy Jackson. And I have to accept a lot of different interpretations for my job. So the changes possibly don’t bother me that much.
Actual criticisms of this episode, so you know I have them:
Procrustes was wasted. He’s one of my favorite villains of Greek mythology. Hermes hints that other demigods don’t make it past the secret entrance. Couldn’t Percy notice a bunch leftover armor or ripped Camp Halfblood shirts?
What was up with Asphodel? I’m on an Odyssey re-read. Even great heroes are in Asphodel. Pretty much the whole cast of the Iliad is down there. You don’t have to have regrets, and in fact, once you’ve drunk some Lethe water the way you’re supposed to, you don’t remember them anyway. The departed spirits have to be fed something before they have enough memory to communicate. What happened with Annabeth was weird.
