No-Input Mixing Board: An Expanse of Azure (Drone)

  • I'm exploring more drones; this time with the mixing board. I love the slow movement and layering of the different oscillators. There's a big reverb and a delay on the output, but there's also quite a bit of movement coming from the interaction of the channels on the mixing board. The first three are all tuned to about the same frequency, which creates a lovely unison effect as the waves roll through each other with small misalignments. The auxiliary send channels are set just short of oscillation, which produces that high, resonant whistle when the other channels are run into them. The result is complex, a little alien, and full of sonic details from the interaction of elements.
    As I was listening to the mixing board, the mix of beauty and unsettledness reminded me of some poems by Yi Lu. This recording borrows its title from one of my favorite poems in her collection Sea Summit (translated by Fiona Sze-Lorrain).
