Great overview man. I can't stop singing this modules praises either as I'm sure all other proud owner's of the DLD are. It's definitely easier watching your video to figure out a module than it is to read a manual. Maybe I'm just too old, either way .... Great job man.
Awesome demo/tutorial! I've had this module recommended to me many times now so I might just have to take the plunge and get it. It certainly sounds lovely in your vid.
It's stunning, I've said several times on camera that it's the best module I've ever used. "Best" is a loaded word that I don't like but it sort of gets the point across. It would go great as a stereo effect for looping and delay over your sample based set up.
Yeah thought some Zappa deserved a bit of time, that said was worried UA-cam police would mark as copyright and pull it down. We'll see. I EQ'd pretty heavily to try and stop that happening.
DivKidVideo ah. Well I've not had much time with Christmas and I've been ill with a virus last week so I've not had much time for patching. I'll be up and running soon and posting videos on my channel. I'll report back then. ;)
Having a play now. Trying to wrap my head around entering the system settings to change the delay feed cv jack to control the mix on B, but not having a huge amount of luck. Until then, currently settling on using A as a master send delay, then running it into B as a HOLD beat repeater master delay looper thing as the end of the chain. Its cool.
Wow thanks! I've been using this pretty much exclusively as an end-of-chain effect. I knew I could get more out of it, but wasn't really sure of the context. You're giving me a lot of homework on this one ;)
the idea of stereo image on a phone at first seemed a joke but with speakers at the opposite ends of them you can definitely hear the width on things like this.

Another beautiful timeless riff. What names do you produce under? You create some amazing riffs. A delay you can play in musical scales? I've never heard of such a thing. Nice trick! What are your favourite delays?
There's music under my real name around, most of it privately in libraries and things outside of what I do here. I'll have some more music to release publicly as DivKid though in the future. Favourite delays ... long list, too many to name really. Hardware, software, modules. There's a lot of good stuff around.
Bass sound at the beginning was Mutable Instruments Tides. I sequenced it with the Audio Damage Sequencer 1 and use the stepped random modulation mode on the extra 3 CV outputs on the Sequencer 1 to modules wave shape, wave skew and folder/filter on Tides. Never a question too "noobie" so fire away anytime :)
Hi, at 4:32, if it 2 different Rings modules in each delay entry? If Left and Right is from the same Rings, how did you sent notes left and right and split the signal? Thank you for your videos, very helpful
Very nice, thanks! One question about windowing: you were holding down the hold button and turning the feedback knob; but if you were to do that with CV, would you send a gate into the hold CV rather than a trigger (to mimic holding the button down rather than simply pressing and releasing for a toggle)? Or would you have to hold it down manually?
Hi Dave, I'd have to check the manual and try that out again. I haven't found myself using that in current jamming/projects between videos. I don't think you have to hold it down manually. If you ask 4ms directly (email, Facebook, twitter etc) I'm sure they'll answer anything that I can't directly. Just looked at the manual and here is your answer ... "Using CV with Windowing The Feedback CV jack also allows you to window using external CV control. To enable the CV jack, you must first manually hold down Infinite Hold and turn Feedback, even just a small amount. The Feedback CV jack will now control the window. If you turn the Feedback knob at any time without holding down Infinite Hold, the Feedback CV jack will no longer control the window."
Thanks so much for this! I'm just cracking to the wide world of modular synthesis and your channel has been super helpful. One thing I'd really appreciate your insight on - what's your output chain in this video? Are you going straight out from a mixer/VCA into your interface, or do you use an output module? Thanks again :)
Hi Jonathan not sure exactly what this was as the video is from some time back. But for convenience I use the Praxis (Sure I did back when I filmed this too) Snake Charmer which is an 8 output balanced line driver output onto DB25 snake. I then have a snake cable taking the DB25 from the modular side to 8 XLRs on my interface. I've shown off a couple of nice Vermona outputs on my channel TwinOut - ua-cam.com/video/Y89P74fYZrk/v-deo.html and the TAI-4 - ua-cam.com/video/q7gqTDrBpNE/v-deo.html . You don't need to use an output module at all you can come out of the last module in the chain into your other gear. Just be aware eurorack levels are typical 10x hotter than line level. So you might clip things, but your gear might have the headroom to take it and be fine. But they're convenient often dealing with level control, getting signals onto the right cables, sometimes with headphone amps/drivers and outputs too.
No worries, I try to respond to as much as I can. If you're not getting good results straight out of the SP, then a stereo input module would be what you need. There's a website called Modular Grid which is a huge module database with the facility of building up virtual cases and layouts. You can check on there under the modules section and search by functions etc. Might be helpful when looking at what's out there. www.modulargrid.net
When I say issues, I mean would you have preferred to have it there, doesn't seem like theres anyway to momentarily bring in the full mix other than with the dials.
DivKidVideo that's cool. I thought I'd be able to cv the dry/wet and delay feed together to create a full wet beat repeat type thing, though it's not immediately possible, a skim through the manual reveals that in the system settings you can set the delay feed cv in to also control the dry wet as well! So happy days all round. (Haven't tied it yet though)
It's very unimportant to remember that the "Karplus-Strong" method has a filter in the feedback loop. So, like, without the filter, it's kind of illegal and definitely going to cost you a lot of money.
don't think so, maybe a firmware up to make a quick and subtle crossfade with it on and off. But if you loop/freeze audio at a non zero crossing point you'll get a click either way.
Hey Ben, Awesome video as usual with any of your demo vids! Have you tried pinging your DLD with the Ultra Random Analog clock out? I've tried with mine to no avail, also the EOS output on my Phonogene and a square wave from a Batumi, both also not working. The ping pushbutton works however as do all the clock outs on the DLD. I'm thinking there's something else afoot!
Hey Kevin, I'm sure at one point in this video it was the URA clock output. If not I've definitely done that loads, so I'd say something was wrong. Contact 4ms :)
DivKid, is it easy enough to sync the town delay lines so it can function as a basic stereo delay? I just saw someone on a forum complaining about having difficulties doing this, although it seems it would be part of the modules basic functionality. Thanks for your hard work!
with the LEDs in the jacks? They're from here (although I don't think they're available anymore) - actually I can't find the link. Site must have been taken down.
I haven't tried running CV / gate/ trigger through it so I don't know. That certainly wasn't the intention of the product. Check the manual to see if the inputs are AC / DC coupled.
Novack was a stogy character who thought that only music made in the 18th century was music. Zappa on the other hand did amazing work in many genres. He did an electronic album "Jazz from Hell" that was done entirely on the synclavier. Love how clean the DLD is. Makes for a great processor for acoustic instruments and software too.
Dammit, there are strong arguments to be made for having this, the Mimeophon AND the Echophon in the rack- they just do different things, brilliantly.
that's the problem with delays, they all do things differently enough and like a lot of people with filters - you end up with loads of them!

Rings has limited polyphony. If you set it to two voice poly and connect both outputs, alternating triggers go to alternating outputs.
