- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #602
Date of adventure: 1/20/22
Who was Jack Longstreet? According to the plaque in front of the Longstreet Casino, he was a noble iconoclast of the Old West -- defender of Indian rights and peacekeeper of the frontier.
But according to some old newspapers I read, he was also a low-down, dirty rotten cattle- and horse-thieving scoundrel who'd just as soon shoot you as say hello.
Which is closer to the truth? Join me as I visit the site of Longtsreet's cabin in Ash Meadows to explore the complicated personal history of this fascinating, but little-known renegade.

I love those kind of books written about obscure people, and you must really admire the person that was inspired enough to write it !
I stand in awe of your deep intellectual grasp of our provincial history.
If he was connected to Confederate General James Longstreet, Gen. Longstreet was an interesting fellow himself. He was a Confederate general who became a staunch Republican after the war which was anathema to most Southerners, he led a militia of African-Americans against the racist White League, and supported civil rights for black people. James Longstreet was born near where I grew up and he is one of the rare Confederate generals I feel we can still be proud of. So I could see Jack being kin to him, because I can see similarity between the General's treatment of African -Americans after the war and Jack's feelings about Native Americans. They were also a fairly large family spread out between South Carolina and Louisiana, so I could see him having been a cousin or something.
Thanks for the information on James Longstreet.
I can see Jeff Bridges playing the role of Jack Longstreet in a movie.
In his ‘dude’ sweater !
Definitely!
Longstreet was one of Lee most effective generals he begged lee not to go threw with Pickets charge and the rest is history this man probably left the south before the war at his family order you have me interested now
Thank you for being you
@@charleyfolkes absolutely in the "dude" sweater!
Great story, great story teller You are a national treasure. Thank you for what you do.
Love these Wild West stories. They unearth the history we have right under our feet.
You really do your homework. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge in a great way. Love your personality. Happy adventures
Yes, great story telling and fascinating history lesson!
Please do more historical content ...I love hearing your story telling !!!
Sally Springmeyer Zanjani is an excellent historian writing about mining history in Nevada and elsewhere. She is descended from pioneers that settled near Virginia City and her father was for a short period the city attorney for Goldfield Nevada during the boom. All of her books are worth reading. This was an excellent story about another sketchy operator during the western boom and bust mining era.
Thanks so much Sarah for this great historical narrative.
Great story-telling, WH! Can’t wait for the day you get your own travel/history channel. You can pick-up where Huell Howser left off! Love 💕 your channel!
Huell loved the desert, too.
I concur, I've mentioned that a few times, I can't believe a network hasn't scooped her up 🤔
You should play Jack Longstreet’s daughter Emma in the film version. Get yourself a Model T and cosmetology license!
Very good history video. Thanks for your interest in the Old West.
Wow! That was entertaining, informative, spell binding, a great story, I think I love you. Or the smoke just kicked in! Good work!
I would have never heard of Jack Longstreet if not for the story telling magic of the Legendary Wonderhussy!!
Mike
Outstanding video! Love to hear of how the 'ol west' folks lived. Excellent job researching & telling Jack's story!
Many of 'Us' still live the same way. 'Ol' west 'folk' ...I just can't shoot people 'willy Nilly' anymore... Too many hungry lawyers.
@@jimcharlton7869 Yeh...and ammunition ain't gettin' any cheaper either.
GET IT, girl! You're the non-stop Ultimate!!! Love everything you do!!!
Another great adventure through our colorful history.
🤩 you tell some of the best stories, please don’t ever stop.😁👀✌🏻
What an interesting story of a character of the west. These are an excellent addition to your channel. You bring your personality overplayed with information.

Thank you for seeing more than just one side. It's so refreshing to see someone who isn't trying to support an agenda in every thing they do. I so appreciate your even handed outlook.
What a great story of Jack Longstreet. Good job WH!
Just love your outfit! Interesting desert frontiersman, great research done! I just love stories about the old West.🌵

I love the historical videos you do and the information the video contains. The video broadens my knowledge of the west and the area around Death Valley. Keep up the good work!
I really enjoy your videos. You are a great story teller and your videos seem smooth, well put together and nicely edited with smooth transitions. I have said it before. You have found your calling.
Sarah, your ability to teach us so much history in such an entertaining way make me wish you were my history teacher in school. I may have paid closer attention. Your are the best channel on the Tube.

Great story about Jack Longstreet Wonderhussy. Great pictures and editing with it. Keep on keeping on 😁👍👍/ BIGGUN
He did look like Earnest Hemingway!! I love your research Sarah ….
Hey Sarah what a great well researched video.I always try to learn something new every day and this was fantastic.Somebody whom I have never heard of and you really made his story come alive!
As a resident of Amargosa Valley, right near Longstreets Casino, we have spent our last 6 years here learning the same info you have provided in the time it took to watch your video!
We'd love to show you around the places we've become acquainted with!
I love your story style in telling historical stories. Very entertaining.
Your storytelling style is priceless.❤️
Listening to you telling a historical story always makes me feel like a kid again. On the edge of my seat wanting more! Only 53 days until spring. The desert sure looks better than the NE snowbound days that I live with 🥶🥶. 👍👍🙋♂️
Why live there then??? I moved from NYC, and have Never Looked Back. (and never have been back. Now a Desert Rat like SJ, WH) you can do it.🤗
I agree ☝️. Would never move from CA to the NE! Brr! We got it made here! 🌴 🌞 🏊♀️ 👙 🏄♀️
I’ve been to Las Vegas and honestly I didn’t take a like to it. But then I’m not a gambler. And never felt like it was a great place to live. I went back a couple of times. It’s just not my thing. I’m glad WH likes it and I have a friend or two that likes it. Hey They chose their place and I chose mine. To each his own. Live and let live. I certainly wouldn’t tell anyone where they should or should not live. Lol I really enjoyed the shows I saw there. I wouldn’t spend big money to go back there for them.
Well Miss Hussy, I eagerly anticipate all your videos but loved this one, great story well told.
Very interesting story about the old west. and Jack certainly adds to the colorful past many of the cowboys had.
I lived on a 50 ac farmstead in Prices Fork, VA while getting my undergrad degree at Vrginia Tech, The nearenst neighbor was an abandoned farmhouse [now cattle pasture] where a spring house foundation remained. This was the home's refrigerator. So cool, most assuredly 😉
Thanks for the slice of frontire family history Sarah. My granpa used to tell me "believe none of what you hear & half of what you see." There were a couple others - the winners tell the story of the fight & only spend what you can pull out of your of your billfold...
Sooo much fun watching you Cara Linda; you're a true storyteller / teacher of western lore! 👻❣
Great story. Fascinating character. 🤠
LOVE this one, Sarah Jane! Great job!
Damn, you just keep getting better, awesome research and so engagingly told!!!
Wonderhussy, I think it's been quite a while since you posted a hot-springs video and I'm gettin a hankerin for one. Loved this one and you definitely brought ole Jack Longstreet to life!
Grea job. ! You always provide all the necessary facts and tales on the subjects. ! Not to mention you share your excitement. Thanks for that !..
Definitely an interesting character and lived to a ripe ol age for the day even though he shot himself in the armpit and died as a result soon thereafter. Love to see where he's buried.
Keep your finger OFF the trigger until you Know Your Target. One of the First Five Rules of Firearms. 🥴

@@marcbee1234 Gee, I would never have guessed such a thing, how silly.😏
Sara you’ve got me squeezeing’ myself here 🤣
Love how you get tight with the 'bad boys' . Great Reveal. Tough guy with 2 wives. He had to be! An Excellent video with lots of research and editing.
EXCELLENT BACKGROUND INFORMATION!!!
Keep doing what you do because you do it so well pretty lady.
Brown looks terrific on you! You have wonderful taste!!
Thanks for posting!!
I knew Jack Longstreet, he was always nice to me.
You make my week! Thank you!
Great story telling!!
Wonderfully done, Sarah!
Jack is like a prototype of one Karl May's characters
Got to love that story telling style _ And i was wondering if he had any kids, and i wondering where he was buried, and i was wondering and i was wondering and everything got covered _ Great details, always a thumbs-up. . . :>/
I am just so happy I found your channel!
Sarah you are amazing, Jack Longwood looks like Kenny Rogers and Ulysses S Grant together this was my favorite video from you by far and I've seen so many thank you so much for sharing this awesome Southwest experience❤ stay safe out there alone and take care always sending my love and kisses from east coast
Sounds like a nice ol timer. My great grandfather rode shotgun in his younger days in Oregon. We still have his double barrel 12 guage that's been passed down. The story goes that he never had to use it. But just behind the trigger guard there's two knife notches I found while doing a restoration cleaning. So even "nice guys" back then were forced into protecting themselves. I hope the information keeps coming in on Jack seems like quite a colorful character! Thanks Sarah! Another well researched video!👍🇺🇸
What did he do guard against Angella Davis?
You are such an excellent story teller 💖💖
AH yes! A new vid by our girl WH! Always a gr8 day when we get one from Sarah Jane! Thank you so much for this informative revelation of Jack Longstreet's life. J
Hey what's wrong with Clampers? 🤣
Great episode. Love your work
Jack Longstreet was the human equivalent of the spaceport Mos Eisley from Star Wars IV. You really had to get to know
him before he would let you in to his life or a local native or were a little tyke whom he actually would tell stories about his younger days when he was older cause he didn't really trust anyone with his personal life. Guess he mellowed in his golden years. Too bad he accidentally shot himself but he was a bad ass of a pioneer settler even if he didn't consider himself so.
He was the epitomy of the Old West. Wonderhussy salutes him and his old west ways! Great storytelling WH!
Another fascinating video! We admire all the research that you do for your videos. You are a natural history buff!!!! Thank you for all these amazing adventures that you go on and share! We live up in the Elko area and if you are back in this area again, we'd love to meet you! You would be welcome at our homestead here in Deeth anytime!!! 😊
Hello Sarah. I definitely think they should do a movie about that character. He seemed to live an adventurous life that we all would like to have lived. Have a great adventure my friend and I will see you in the next one
They should do a movie about WH.
Like I said the Longstreet is a little gem! I actually was there three times this visit .. gas was the main reason but their resturant isn't bad either .. I got salads as traveling I never get enough greens .. LOL I camped just outside of Tecopa last night .. got up at 11:30 and drove home to Tucson! Now you gave me reason to go back .. again! I have to do the Ash Meadows .. I was totally facinated by all the old engines they have around the casino .. 🤠
The great song writer Tom T Hall had an album out years back called 'The Story Teller'. Sarah has that same knack that would make him so proud to listen. She could make an old phone book sound like a tale or woven magic!
Sarah your story on Jack Long Street is amazing what a story and by the way your jacket is really cool you look nice in it great job Sarah
Great research and storytelling! Enjoyed the tale.
Very well done.
Congratulations! Another great video. Sounds like a good guy who maybe made a few bad mistakes. If you spend your life having the courage to try to correct the wrongs that you are able to, you are sure to made some enemies who are sure to say bad things about you.
Great video. You're a natural. Always entertaining and informative.
Great Job Wonderhussy !!!
You do a great job tieing it all in
Back in the day. Miners and locals built desert refrigerators by building a square wooden box with chicken wire and wood framed. By hanging burlap all over the open frames and placing a huge pot of water on the top with tiny holes drilled into the bottom water dripped down, soaked the burlap and the wind blew through the wet burlap cooling the inside of the box quite a bit. Sort of early swamp coolers minus the motors. . That's probably what he had going on in the back of that cabin.
Great story, I like your way to tell stories of real life and real peoples. You do a lot of background work for the videos and then you fully experience the story as you tell it, it makes it perfect. Jack’s story is impressive, I’m also wondering if the movie wasn’t made? It would make a great epic, the Real story of Jack Longstreet.
BTW, it was nice to see you dressed in that cool jacket, jeans and boots. Fits in nicely with the spirit of the story and suits you anyway. Above all, it was great to see your beautiful hair free for a long time.
Great story. I hope Hollywood doesn't do his story because it won't be accurate and Jack deserves accuracy.
I'm hearing that music.......we're going to be entertained by Wonderhusssy,. Lucky us.
Whooo hooo....in 60 years were gonna have THE LEGEND OF. WONDERHUSSY...THINK OF THAT !!!!!!😉
Thanks for the background on Jack Longstreet. I go by that casino about once a year yet didn't know anything about him except what it says on the plaque
"Riding shotgun" was never an Old West phrase. Yes, guards did "ride shotgun" carrying sawed off shotguns just like the Westerns. Messenger and official coaches used armed guards "riding shotgun" going back to 17th century Britain (where they used a pair of flintlock pistols) to fend off highwaymen. Modern Americans got the phrase from those TV and movie Westerns.
Great narrative of Jack Longstreet. You did a good job as a researcher and lecturer! Keep-up the great work! Looking forward to the next the next vlog and history lesson! Best wishes for a great life! 🧧🤙
This is the best part of the week with WH!
U are awesome! Thank u for so much knowledge and history.
Great story. The kind of history that seems to be so important.
The true history is always difficult to find, thanks for shedding some light on a small yet very interesting piece of it. Well done! I am new to your channel and I am wondering if you have done a story on the haunted history of Virginia City? I had a very interesting visit there back in 2015.
I live 15 miles away... V.C. What do you want to know? Many 'local' secrets are not meant to be shared with "Outsiders"... Spend some time there (2 weeks?) and many, many strange things- Will be revealed. It just bubbles out. Spirits galore...
I just went into her long list of videos and it doesn't seem like she ever did a Virginia City video. The one I remember seeing must have been on some other explorer's channel.
But now that you brought up the subject, Keep watching. After she gets settled in to her new digs a little better, She may go check Virginia City out.
This guy sounds like some of my ancestors. 😫👍❤🇺🇸
Great video Sara
Nice story telling.
As you point out , every man for himself , Longstreet was typical of men in "lawless places" .
He probably leaned more toward ,peaceful" pursuits than murder and mayhem.
As most westerners did.
Nice story telling.
Great video, as always! you're right about the parallels between the 2 of you. You're kind of like a Jill Longstreet!
You are an entertaining story teller Wonderhussy!
I love the history. Thank you and safe journeys
Great video Sarah! Thanks
Fascinating!
Well I have to say you always find some interesting people or places to show and tell us. I find it very interesting for sure. Hope you are well and recovered from those darn shingles. Be safe.
