  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #613
    Date of adventure: 2/23/22
Exploring an abandoned cinder mining operation way out in the middle of nowhere...in the middle of an unseasonable snow flurry! Who lived here, and what would there lives have been like?
Join me as I speculate wildly about two martini-swliing mine wives...and be sure to tune in next time for Part 2, when I investigate the mine itself!

The Mojave Desert is a harsh, but very spiritual, place. It’s as much a matrix as anything else in my life has been. Growing up in the desert has a different gestalt than growing up in a temperate zone, with its humidity and rainfall. As children growing up in the Mojave, we chased lizards and snakes, instead of frogs and squirrels. There is an arid openness about it, and a true feeling of being alone, that you don’t get in any other type of environment 😁

It’s so weird that as a child living in the desert I used to explore sites like this around Death Valley in the early 80s that had old 1950s junk. Only to see Wonder Hussy explore similar sites but contemporary to when I was a kid.

@@techreviews.heretoday.gonetomo You could tell by the conveyor system and overhead hoppers that a lot of trucks loaded there and hauled the aggregate from there while the quarry was in operation. The access road would have been maintained. The trailer toter would have had no problem delivering the trailer to the location.

The old Chevy pickup looks a lot like one my dad bought new in 1965 and still had well into the '90s. Lots of happy childhood memories of riding in the back (bed) of that old truck - going to the fair or up to the mountains to cut and haul back firewood for the winter, all piled high above the level of the cab and me and my older brother riding all the way home on top of the load of wood.
Poking around in the ruins of what was someone's home must evoke visions of what their lives might have been like - echoes of bygone days, the laughter of children playing, the sounds of daily life. I wonder if, on a quiet spring day, one could stand very still and maybe hear some of those sounds. Nice video. Cheers.

I can just imagine what a cozy home it once must have been, sitting all alone out in the desert, under the beautiful starry sky..Thanks for taking us to these places Sarah, your vids are pure enjoyment..Stay safe exploring out there.

The cinder mine still looks like it did when I saw it a few years back. Love the old trucks and signs up by the mine area especially the old yellow dodge , the only difference seems to be the graffiti on the tank by the Mobil home that wasn't there last time . By the way I read the Aware guy from Indecline died last year so I believes so he won't be doing any more graffiti. Just makes the stuff he did more ironic and sad.

I guessed the Chevy truck because I drove one on the farm when I was going to high school in North Dakota. I remember driving it into a snow filled ditch in the middle of a North Dakota winter blizzard. Bill Williams is the name of a tributary of the Colorado River near Parker Dam in Arizona. There's a state park there where you can camp.
