As a swede and choir singer I must say that this is wonderful! It brings me the same feeling of sincerity and calmness as in the dark and cold mornings at church in december when this piece is usually preformed here in Sweden. Also great work with the pronunciation!
First heard this piece eight or nine years ago, Christmas, King's College radio broadcast. Galvanized. This is the best performance on UA-cam. The overtones, the way the sound rings in the space. Haunting. It's a door into another world.
This is my go to recording. Such a gift. This quality of music is, at least for me, what a musical "offering" is made of. I can feel my heart open up. Thank you!
Ich hörte dieses Stück bei einem Weihnachtskonzert im Stift Melk vom Chor Ad Libitum. Es war als ob die Engel begonnen hätten zu singen - unglaublich! Ein Hineinhören in eine andere, schöne Welt...
It has been more than 15 years that I had the opportunity to sing this beautiful piece with the Vienna Chamber Choir and I hadn't heard it since then until now. Thanks for this wonderful performance as well as your others, your voices and singing are amazing!
I am sitting in my classroom, correcting Christmas examinations, and letting this beautiful music wash over me. There is something about this carol, in particular, that sets the atmosphere of Christmas for me. Thank you Siglo de Oro.
Beautiful. It was beautiful. The singers were beautiful, their voices were beautiful, their choral art was beautiful. “Music forecasts the past, recalls the future. Now and then the difference falls away, and in one simple gift of circling sound, the ear solves the scrambled cryptogram. One abiding rhythm, present and always, and you're free.” - Richard Powers
Damn you guys are good, your harmonies are perfect and the blend of your voices is like smooth honey. I imagine heaven will be like this, this incredible beautiful sound of music that carries you away. ♥️💙♥️💙
ridiculous how current songs get millions of views with no real talent involved in the music. then. there's this, with 30,000 views but real musical genius involved!
One of the best interpretations of this arrangement by the swede Jan Sandström, if not the best? If the choirs pronounciation of this swedish text isn´t perfect has less importance, we all know the lyrics. Such a harmony and beautiful sound among these singers! Och God Jul! som vi säger på svenska.
Discovered this piece/performance by chance 4 years ago listening to NPR on a snowy night 4 days before Christmas. It is so beautiful. Stops in my tracks every time. Moves my soul, makes my cry and brings me hope.
I've just discovered Siglo de Oro and you take my breath away with the sheer and utter beauty of your singing. Through you, I've heard pieces by Howells, Warlock, Parsons and Sandstrom I hadn't known. Thank you for enriching my life. I wish you were performing more but In the meantime, PLEASE keep recording!
An absolutely ethereal sound in that acoustic. Thank you so much for bringing this light to the darkness of our 2020 world (and yes I know it released a couple of years ago.)
Absolutely glorious. The texture, the richness, the fullness which the underlaying voices add to the traditional carol is amazing. This now on my "lift my heart to the Lord" playlist.
Just such an absolutely glorious deconstruction of an already beautiful carol. As a bit of composer myself, I can't help but appreciate the harmonics engaged. A work of genius, and that's before we get to the fantastic performance. First time I heard this was by twelve former members of our National Youth Choir, who were stood in a circle around the audience in a large auditorium. Just stunning. I think I wept.
We always sang this at Christmas when I was little, it's such a magical song. But you really need to be in a church to full appreciate it. This is a very good performance.
Astoundingly beautyful! I first heard this piece (or rather this arrangment) in a church in Stockholm an was immediately struck by it's genius. At that occasion the singers were spread out in the church which together with the accoustics really surrounded everyone in the audience. This performance is even better and I am so glad to hear it again!
Wow that sounds like a great way to perform and listen to this piece! What was the name of the church? We love this arrangement - we're so pleased you have enjoyed our performance.

Just to clarify, I meant that your performance is superior, in case it came across the other way! :-) The concert I attended was held in Jakobs (Saint James's) Church. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_James%27s_Church,_Stockholm The singers stood in the isles, and it was very, very effective.
Tonally, it’s very easy-the hardest part is holding out those phrases for so long. Short random breaths have to be taken, and the fewer singers you have, the harder it is to hide it. It’s quite a daunting task for the choir 1 part (the hymn) to be performed by a quartet.
I was near there - I moved from the Cecil Sharp House CC and was fortunate in finding Patrick leading a local choir, at this time. It wasn't to last, Siglo needed more time, but it did long enough for me to well outgrow the locals. I now sing with Polyphony Down The Pub. Which does the same. With character.
Great. Great. Great! Keep on singing and sounding so marvelous. Solange Menschen solche Dinge tun, verliere ich den Glauben an unsere Spezies auf keinen Fall. Mein tiefer Dank und macht bitte weiter so!
Well done! Was looking for a recording of Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser (I was once a pupil there) and Stockholms Musikgymnasium doing this and stumbled across this. This is not easy pulling off without having a couple of massive mixed choirs around.
i absolutely love those resolutions from the Mj to the m, then back to the Mj....goosebumps. too, Sig, it is just the way of the world...fine sculptures, art, gardens, etc. architecture...and so many---particularly Americans---go aimlessly passed these treasures. shameful.
Here's the translation: There is a rose that springs up from Jesse’s root and stem. By venerable fathers extolled, that stood in former times, a flower blushing and gentle, amidst the cold winter, in a dark midnight-hour. This single performance justifies UA-cam's existence.
This comment makes all the hard work worth it! Thank you so much!
Magnificent. It's like a memory of Christmas, trapped in ice. Mystical, impeccably sung, perfectly arranged. Absolutely wonderful.
That's really kind, thank you!

Thank you Bob!
Yeah, the piece calls for humming from the choir but these guys used a neutral vowel that allowed a lot more overtone production.
( The Overtones is also an Irish acapella group you may like)
My choir tried this in undergrad and just could not keep it in tune. this piece should be an Olympic event for stamina. well done!
Haha thank you Kenneth! We could have done with twice as many singers!
This is my go to recording. Such a gift. This quality of music is, at least for me, what a musical "offering" is made of. I can feel my heart open up. Thank you!

I have just listened to this at varying speeds on the computer and I have got to give them a grade of an A+! Well done, everyone!

Augmentation at its finest. Superb performance! Greetings from Sweden.

A brilliant modern arrangement of a 16th century classical song. I love it...
Thanks for your comment Yiannis!
Are you all even remotely aware of how amazing and beautiful this is? Just….bravo.

Thank you so much! That's very kind. We love this piece.
That soprano at the end....she lifted my soul. This is a great variation. The overtones take my breath away
Wow, thank you for your kind comment Roy!

Tears in my eyes.. I already knew this arrangement, but the singers in this video are just incredible!

Sadly, that's the case in today's world. "Primark" music will always get the attention of the broadcasters and their followers.
