    Being part native American myself I doubt any of my ancestors are going to jump out of their grave and want their arrowhead back. In 1988 , I became a certified Open Water Diver. While doing upgrade training in Florida the next year, we made a side trip to Crystal River to drift dive. During that time you could enter the head water without permit or observation. I noted a huge old water soaked timber, hand cut right angle corners sloping from dry sand into the water. I decided to fan the sand on the upstream side while sitting in less than a foot of water figuring that if anything was there it would be trapped by the timber. I quickly found a green glass bottle stopper with tiny air bubbles, a glass rod applicater about 4" long and several encrusted hand wrought square nails in an area I was told had no human habitation. Every dive in every place I went, I would look for artifacts just for the shear joy of discovery. As always, they had to go back where they were found. Seeing your work along with the excitement and knowledge you share makes me glad for that first trip find.

      @iHUNTdeadThings  Рік тому +6

      There is unfortunately no context to be had from points in a river. Anything on land ESPECIALLY at a "site" can provide context, but these aren't able to provide the same. There are though, some under water sites... one example being the burial ground off the gulf of Florida. But river finds don't carry context.

    I spent well over 2 decades regularly diving the rivers here in lower South Carolina collecting artifacts and fossils. It is legal here. You must have a license and report what you find, but if you follow the rules, you can keep what you find. In theory it is a win-win situation. The state gets the info on what is in the rivers, and the divers get to keep their finds. Also the divers who are following the rules are more likely to report things they run across, like shipwrecks and special artifact concentrations. I've run across some amazing, and sometimes amusing things on the bottom of the rivers. While the gators and moccasins must be respected, the most dangerous creature in the river is the driver of the boat overhead.

      I'm familiar with South Carolina's system, its a good one. Florida has had their nose in the private sectors business for a hundred years or more. They will fight you with your own money, just ask Mel Fisher or any salvor in the state how much trust they have in Florida bureaucrats. They rarely uncover anything themselves, they simply threaten and take what they want from the finders with zero recognition, a true bunch of pirates.

      It’s about respecting the people who came before and how they feel about discarded artifacts. The local tribes may have requested the law be made because of exploitation. Native artifacts should never be a cash commodity, they should only be for study and preservation so the culture isn’t forgotten. I too think artifacts should be preserved and studied, but if they are not from your culture then you aren’t the one who can decide that. I live on top of a slaughtered pueblo that was not made into a historic site. There are pottery shards and stone tools all over the area. I was out last weekend and was digging along the shore of river. Not in a state park or restricted area. River is literally full of trash and junk. Everything from gas station plastic cups to car parts. I was stopped by game warden. Turns out you cannot dig or sift for arrow heads. I had no idea. Find it on the surface, no problem. It is a class A misdemeanor, that is a step below a felony. I was honest with game warden and respectful. In turn, he realized I really did not know it was illegal and I was truthful with him. He wrote me a warning. Make sure you know laws, it isn’t worth getting into trouble over. I understand not digging in a burial site, but I think it should be ok along river where I was, but my opinion does not matter. Glad the game warden was reasonable and gave me a little mercy. You could walk through there on a path but you couldn’t dig or do anything…..just a walk through, usually followed by a bird sanctuary. It was considered private property. This was back in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Today, nobody is allowed in there except for a groundskeeper….there’s a locked gate. The bird sanctuary is still accessible with walking paths. The surrounding woods are quite beautiful but scarce as development has destroyed most of it.

    The law is ridiculous. The same people the law was made for do not care and will continue to dig in unauthorized areas. Meanwhile the law abiding citizens leave the artifacts to be either paved over and destroyed or to be picked up by someone else. North Florida creek banks have been ravaged despite the no bank digging laws being put into effect.

    God sends those artifacts to us. They find us. I would be very sad if I was the maker of an arrowhead, then centuries and thousands of years go by, it gets lost in the Earth somewhere, never to be seen, held, admired or appreciated again. It makes us remember them, thankful, happy and be in wonder. So, definitely take it with you and share.

    The government enacts these sort of laws often times not to protect the environment or to avoid desecration and other excuses they use but rather, they realize that some of these artifacts and minerals that people might find have value and the government does not want ordinary citizens to sell things that they cannot easily track and tax. This is especially true in England and parts of Europe where finding treasure without telling the government can land you in jail. Despite the fact that these artifacts came from civilizations hundreds to thousands of years old and there might be people living today that are decedents of some of these early cultures, the government really doesn't have any rights to lay claim to them any more so than anyone else but they use their positions of power to write these so called laws giving them the legal right to steal them. There certainly isn't anything moral about these laws. They just want the revenue from them and don't want to see ordinary citizens profit from it. I use to be an avid rockhound but age and health stopped that. Allot of the sites that I use to go to that were "legal" collecting sites are now closed and it is "illegal" to collect them. In most cases they use the excuse that some species of plant or animal has been found on the property or someone found an Indian artifact nearby. I know of one such site on the south flank of a mountain that use to produce wonderful examples of the mineral quartz in clear crystals with associated rare minerals. They closed this site because on the north side of the mountain and a good hike away, someone found some Indian artifacts that indicated that there might be the remnants of an early encampment. There hasn't been an Indian artifact that I know of ever found in the old quartz quarry. There is allot national forest land here in the east and it has been said that some of this land was turned into NF because they wanted to hoard the resources within for themselves. This is most likely the case in some locations. The US government is sitting on many vast mineral resources that if they desired, could be of vital importance to our economy and much of it is on lands that were stolen from the public and turned into national forest, parks, etc. under the premises that it was to "protect" these areas. In some cases, I think this is true and it may be a good thing in order to keep logging and big mining corporations out of these areas but the average person, a guy with a shovel and a pick is not a significant threat to the environment if he is only doing it recreational and filling in any holes that he digs. It is all about control, power over the people. A way to limit them from obtaining wealth that can't be taxed.

    I am of two minds. I have always just taken photos of natural stuff that I find, because I was raised in Ca, and so many state and national parks had a 'leave in place' policy. My dad would go to the old ghost town thatvwere NIT under park jurisdiction (back in the 1950s and 60s) and relic hunt. Sometimes in some unknown canyon or mine somewhere he would find the odd fossil.
    But that was back then. Sure, scientists and big money researchers see dollar signs, and that is a patronizing and reprehensible attitude... however I also see thecworst of us regular scuffs destroying habitat with 4 wheelers, poaching, stealing, trespassing, and just putting a bad name to relic and fossil hunting.

      I think it has to do with how worn the edges are.
      After years in the water I don't think it would be very sharp.
      Kind of like how sea glass becomes worn smooth over time.
      I'm sure there's other ways an expert can use to identify if it's genuinely old & what area it belongs in. But I don't remember them.

    • @iHUNTdeadThings

      They don't become worn unless they are tumbling in the river. But they can tell at times by staining from the river. Tannins take awhile to actually adhere, but that's not generally the way they date them, just a way for us to tell.

    I'm glad you put it back. All laws, no matter where are putt in place because some knucle-head caused a large enough problem for law makers to need to create the law. Those who were doing the correct actions end up suffering. If we would all follow common sense, concern for our neighbors/communities/county/states/country instead of the egocentric view that only they matter over everyone and thing, we wouldn't need so many laws to be made. (used to be a village board member in another state).
    Want to understand government? Run for a local position, become an election judge, attend meetings - so you know what's up, voice your opinion at meetings when asked for comment, volunteer in your community, etc. We all need to step up to the plate and do our part or it won't get done.
