I thought we didn't like black Box radios? I like them, but I don't care for those that don't do side band. There are a lot of good ones out there, until someone screws them up by trying to adjust them for spread power. Heck, some of them after tweeking you may here your voice coming out of your microwave oven. They are best when left stock.
Adjustments are done through software on newer radios. D/A converters are cheaper than variable components and cost can be further reduced with automated alignment
With radio off, key microphone while pressing and holding band and function buttons then turn radio on. It will access the service menu. You can now adjust modulation and set your carrier or dead key level. I did this on mine and it will dead key 1 watt and swings to 70 watts with modulation wide open. Loud and clear. Looks good on spectrum analyzer also. Then just push the scan button to accept the new settings and restart radio. YOU'RE WELCOME.
You are a wealthy man, few design companies have so much good equipment, they cannot afford them, they sell too little equipment, the equipment is too cheap. Great, professional review :-)
Yep, if you buy one second hand there is less chance of it being screwed up, but we know they will still think they can get more power if they put in bigger output FETs or Transistors and they will try! As Mike will testify, they will never stick and try anything. But no screwdriver is going to put it off frequency, they might kill it though!!!
Thanks for the great review Mike; just picked one up from Amazon! If you have your HAM ticket then you can talk on 10 Meters using AM mode from 29.000 to 29.200 MHz and FM mode - 29.600 MHz. On 12 Meters you can use both AM and FM modes from 24.931 to 24.990 MHz. Yup, a properly licensed HAM (the key words here are 'PROPERLY LICENSED') can use AM and FM besides SSB and Digital modes!
What would prevent me from owning it besides the lack of SSB is the menu driven system. Give me a switch or button or nob for the stuff I will likely use often and a menu system for stuff I likely will not need or want to use. I hate radio's where you have to beep through a million branches of a menu to adjust the mic gain or rf gain or rf power out put of to have continuous running. The original President Lincoln and the RCI2950 have fantastic face plate/control head layouts and give you what you need with out being overwhelmed with buttons, knobs and switches and no menu!
I might consider something like the Lincoln II for a mobile rig. It includes SSB. Still hard to think about this versus a more mainstream mobile rig. Maybe if you don't want to go through the extra work and expense of an antenna working on more of the lower HF bands...

How well does the ASC work? Is it a filter circuit that determines when there is actual voice audio and allows it to pass sorta like PL / Tone squelch?

Can you confirm what the safe and usable voltage range is on Richard and other similar radios? I have seen President say their radios can do 12-24 but they say 13.8 for the Richard... Any 100% info on this?
The Richard is 12V only. They list it for every radio on their website rather clearly. Here are two examples. Look directly under the name of the radio where it shows the feature icons. Another excellent review. Two cans and a piece of string will probably sound better, and a lot cheaper than $140. AM FM no SSB 10-12 meter amateur radio that no respectable ham operator would ever purchase. I guess it's geared towards the 11 AM Krowd. I can't imagine any respectable chicken bander purchasing it either. I don't get it. Am I missing something? PS the new camera is an excellent upgrade Mike. Good luck. 73's
ku4uv with propagation being what it is at this particular point in time I would check with your local amateur radio club to make sure that there are other operators within a 30 mile radius operating on 10 FM. It could get lonely out there. With the next cycle being quite a few years away you might want to reconsider making a purchase of any mono or dual band 10/12 meter AM/FM transceiver. If it had SSB I'd say it might be a good buy at it's $130 price tag. I probably should have reworded my statement to most ham operators as opposed to respectable ham operators. My comment wasn't meant to insult anybody. If that's what happened here I apologize. My comment is just based on my opinion and how I feel about this particular transceiver. Everyone has the right to purchase whatever they like to. I just see this transceiver as a black box import. Strictly designed and sold with the idea that the Ronald's market demographic will be those looking for an easily modifiable high-output 10/12 meter to 11 meter (CB radio.)
ku4uv I never said I'd have more luck making contacts (although my reply might've suggested such) on 10 or 11 SSB. But since you mentioned it. Wouldn't you agree that there's more people operating SSB over FM? If you agree then you'd also have to agree that your chances of making contacts (on SSB) would be greatly increased? When you get the Ronald let me know. Maybe we could have a little contest. Pick the time of day and for a half hour you write down how many contacts you make on 10 m FM, and I'll do the same on 11m SSB (using 27.365-40 LSB. I guess the fairest way to do a contest such as that would be me operating on 10 SSB and you FM. But I'm not a ticket holder. And you did mention 11 meters. So...... :)
How's propagation on 10 meters these days? How many 10 meter repeaters can you hit in your area? For me, it's not offering anything my current HF rig doesn't and it's not useful enough to use as a mobile right now.
loctite222ms I wouldn't know how propagation is on 10 as I'm not a ham operator nor do I listen. But I'd have to assume it's close to 11. At least four days out of the week conditions pop up for stations from the Midwest, Carolinas, Caribbean islands, and central to south America. From my locals I get some DX condition information, and even California, Seattle, and Canada can be worked a couple of times a week. That's here in NJ. Sometimes twice a day during those four out of seven days the band (11) opens up. From what I've heard others talkin about on air there are conditions almost everyday. How long they last I don't know. I can only speak from my experience. I must say that even with the cycle almost non existent I can get my DX Jones/fix satisfied when I fire up my station sometime between 6 and 9 p.m. There's even the ocational European opening. From what I've heard it doesn't last long, but it does manage to work its way in there on occasion. I've fired up the station a few times last week, I made contacts from the Carolinas, Fla, and the Midwest in the late p.m. (6-10pm) Sometimes I'll use the vooacap, and a few other similar propagationMap sites. prediction maps are excellent devices. Especially if your main interest is in dxing. Finding out if it's worth firing up the station is priceless. 73's
The 6 pin up and down button microphone is the same that came on one of my Radio Shack radios with weather band. I can't tell you the number right now but it was one of the later slim lines. I had to laugh because I was thinking good I will just switch microphones and tell everybody this is a Radio Shack LOL
I like watching your videos and have a question. I've noticed you use a push on antenna fitting, do they come in an angle fitting or do you need a threaded angle fitting?
I like that they do not have any edge connectors between the main board and display board. I like that it has a hi cut filter from the OEM that is nice. Normally CB'er like 10/12m AM/FM only radio's. That said I doubt this one will be popular in the USA. Because it is all surface mount and has no adjustment points it will be hated by the very people that this radio is targeted at. I bet it will be popular South of the Boarder though. If it is too hard for them to hack it to bits then Americans do not like it!
The radio will be maximum 13w AM which equates to 50w PEP. The FM Power will be in the area of 30-35 watts, also variable. Another Illegal CB radio to get in trouble with ? If you get caught offering this radio for sale it is a $7,000.00 fine !
No, a AM carrier modulated to 100% means the peak envelope "voltage" doubled. A doubling of "voltage" means the peak envelope "power" quadruples. Power and voltage measurements are two different things. So a 13 watt carrier modulated to 100% would actually be 52 watts PEP, 13x4=52.
Yes true and it does this for a nano second ... Why CB shops show truck drivers the peak reading meter so they think their radios are developing more power than they real are ! RMS is the real deal just like the car stereo industry and their music power vs the true RMS out put .. Big numbers sell well to the uneducated !
I have never worked AM on 12 meters and honestly it wouldn't be a good idea on the WARC bands since they are very narrow bands. I have however worked 12 meters narrow band FM before on 24987.5 and from time to time operate SSB. KC3OSD
SSB for mobile use...why? You will just get stepped on by 4 element antennas running lots of power. Nobody around here uses SSB for local talk. Only time I hear SSB is when skip is rolling in. But it's rolling in AM too, so SSB on a mobile radio is basically useless around here.
So we already have a so called CB tech spreading coils, changing the finals and installing the infamous 1N914 diode swing kit in this radio. Calling it a peak & tune. 👎🏻
Would you be able to tell me where the AMC limiter TR is located? The AM modulation is pretty soft on my radio. It seems to cut a lot back when I talk. Thanks.
I would be tempted to get something like this for my grandfather. It has plenty of power, it compact and if he stays out of the menu it is turn on and talk! Does it have a CB band he would not use all the other coverage.
You need a license to use this radio is it on the Ham Radio bands. Bad radio also for Ham as no Side Band 10 & 12 meter is Upper Side Band & FM on the 29 MHz for repeaters & this radio not have a PL tone board. Very easy to convert it to the CB band.
Agreed. However around here there are very few 10 meter repeaters and a lot of us talk FM simplex. 2m and 70cm you can't walk a half mile without running into one of those repeaters. There are actually more 1.25M repeaters around here than 10M. Since there isn't much in the way of 10M repeaters we kind of have to talk simplex and it works well for that. I use the radio in this video for just that. Would be nice if it had split frequency with PL and DCS capability though.
It's worthless without SSB. Not a single person uses AM (and you can't use FM) on 12 Meters. Same for most of 10 Meters. It's not even useful for 10 meter repeaters (where FM is allowed) as it doesn't have split frequency capability or CTCSS. It's basically made for the CB crowd who shouldn't be illegally using this for 27 MHz anyway. It's just a thinly veiled, hoax of a 'ham radio'
Judging from the features, it looks pretty useless for the legal US market. No SSB? How much FM is there on 10 and 12 meters? Channel readout instead of frequency? OK, I guess it does have a secondary frequency display. Who's going to purchase this? Looks like a real clean design though.
It's not made to be a SSB radio, it's a AM/FM radio. They make other models of radio with SSB if that's what your looking for. 10 meter FM Simplex is pretty active around here. Remember FM Simplex and for that matter Repeater operation is pretty much channelized. So this radio is perfect for FM Simplex operation and AM phone operation.
There's one 10 meter repeater in my state. Don't recall the last time I listened for 10 meter simplex. Now that you brought it up I suppose I should look... Without SSB this is no use to a Tech or Novice operator. I wonder how many Generals would get one just to have an FM/AM ten meter mobile. Heck maybe it's a bigger market than it looks like to me.
nope, you have to install a component on the pcb, then key in a special pass code number to enable 11m band. You want be able to just press and hold a few keys, this will be done at dealers.
They asked me not to. It's simple to do. Looking at the board with parts facing up there are two empty holes at the left front edge. Just install a 1K ohm resistor there, turn radio on, go into menu "PD" and enter code 123456 and it enables full frequency coverage.
To me, that gives you a ham radio that doesn't have SSB and an illegal CB. I'd rather an AM/SSB rig that could operate on 11meters with legal power on AM and SSB in a pinch (though it's technically still illegal). With the challenge of space in some of today's cars, I wish I legally could have a something like this in the cars. 12/11/10 meters. 4 watt AM, 12 watts PEP on SSB 11meters maybe slightly more available on 12 and 10.
Maybe in your country but it's not in the US. There's a 10 meter FM repeater only a few miles from my location that's owned by the local amateur radio club. FM is allowed on the 10 meter band. Might want to check your ARRL frequency allocation chart.
I would still by one, but SSB might have been good as well, but it is quite nice for whet it is.
I've had this CB in my Toyota pickup truck for almost 2 years and have been happy with it. Works great out in the Mojave Desert...

Finally a radio manufactured to be totally immune to the Golden Screwdriver. Brilliant!!
It would still be vulnerable to blow torch soldering attacks.

How is the front in on the thing ...how do they have the agc set in the front end Mike??
How well does the ASC work? Is it a filter circuit that determines when there is actual voice audio and allows it to pass sorta like PL / Tone squelch?
It works well. How it works, would have to reverse engineer it. The ASC circuit is not shown on the schematic.
I have a problem with most of these so called 10 and 12 meter radios is that they click channel instead of a true vfo system .
Joe Wilson ~ it sounds like you're a true siltronix fan LOL vfo all the way :)

Sounds like a bad PTT switch in the microphone.
And the another bad thing about it is it doesn't have a quick disconnect for your power. Makes it harder for taking it out of your vehicle.

Because the narrow bandwith of SSB is more effective than FM and when SSB seems dead even more narrow digital and cw modes can work for dx.
Hi I bought the same radio from 11 meters I opened but I cloud not remove the radio 50 watts how can I do 73
What's the best president antenna to use with this bad boy??
Best radio I ever owned was a President Grant silver face. I am just not a fan of these newer black President radios.

Service Mode for the Ronald?
I like watching your videos and have a question. I've noticed you use a push on antenna fitting, do they come in an angle fitting or do you need a threaded angle fitting?
It's two pieces. The UHF Amphenol push on adapter and a 90 degree UHF to either UHF or N type (depends on which cable it is I'm using) adapter.
thanks, wouldn't know where I could get a couple would you?
Anyone that is a Amphenol distributor. The part number is 83-5SPA. I think the last dozen I bought I got on eBay.
Will you still have 10/12 meter capabilities if modified to 11 meter?
Yes, it will still cover 10/12 meters.
Thank you for the rapid response.
Did you do the conversion?
So is this CB transceiver a SDR transceiver I.E. DSP processing so to add SSB operation it is just a matter of changing the firmware,
No, it's not a SSB radio and your never going to see DSP in a low dollar consumer level product like this. No profit in it for the cost.
MikesRadioRepair shame because am/fm can be generated and demodulated in DSP
The McKinley has SSB on 11m. The Lincoln II has AM/FM/SSB 10/12m, and is about $100 more.
Is this brand are Chinese manufacturing company ?
I think they are European made, not sure where.
Is the echo equality any good in that little radio
Are you still doing repairs? Haven’t seen real recent repair vids. I would really like to send you a radio for repair.
If you change the frequency in a channel can you save/change the frequency for that channel?
I like that they do not have any edge connectors between the main board and display board. I like that it has a hi cut filter from the OEM that is nice. Normally CB'er like 10/12m AM/FM only radio's. Painted screws to hold the pcb into the chassis? Surely that doesn’t give a good electrical connection.
LOL, I didn't even notice that. Good catch.
Painted? I doubt that. There are black finishes like black nickel and black chrome that are highly conductive...
I see you can change the steps. Does that mean you can the set frequency for a channel?
Customize the channels?
The radio will be maximum 13w AM which equates to 50w PEP. The FM Power will be in the area of 30-35 watts, also variable. Another Illegal CB radio to get in trouble with ? If you get caught offering this radio for sale it is a $7,000.00 fine !

Smart man !
Maybe I'm missing something. My math says 100% modulation of a 13 watt carrier is 26 watts peak.
A 10/12M radio that actually covers 12M? We can't have that.
25-26mhz is useless.
Hey there, long time no chat. How do I get ahold of you.
I wonder if there ever was any AM or FM activity on 12m :-)
I have never worked AM on 12 meters and honestly it wouldn't be a good idea on the WARC bands since they are very narrow bands. I have however worked 12 meters narrow band FM before on 24987.5 and from time to time operate SSB. KC3OSD
Sounds like a great radio! But the downfall on it is no SSB.
SSB for mobile use...why? You will just get stepped on by 4 element antennas running lots of power. Nobody around here uses SSB for local talk. Only time I hear SSB is when skip is rolling in. But it's rolling in AM too, so SSB on a mobile radio is basically useless around here.
I would never use SSB in a mobile myself, wouldn't have time to use SSB while driving. AM for local talking only.
So we already have a so called CB tech spreading coils, changing the finals and installing the infamous 1N914 diode swing kit in this radio. Calling it a peak & tune. 👎🏻
Nice little radio.
Are these supposed to be for Ham radio use? With echo and roger beep and no SSB seems like it is for the CB crowd to me. President Black box.
Would you be able to tell me where the AMC limiter TR is located? The AM modulation is pretty soft on my radio. It seems to cut a lot back when I talk. Thanks.
Do the microphone mod which is easy take apart the mic move the element to where it belongs in the big hole your modulation will come up a lot
Love president radios, Was there no Jackson video Mike?
Hi mike great review , new Cam is working well,.Looking for An Address to send ya .Something .Good Luck. 73
can you open it up to transmit on 11 meters?
Of course. It's just adding a single resistor.
Yes you can through software
great video mike. where can i get the channel kit that you showed in the video ? thanks ricks radio shop
There is no "channel kit" for a President Ronald. It's already a broadband export radio.
10/12 meter and no SSB?
It's perfect for use on local Ham radio 10m FM repeaters.
I would be tempted to get something like this for my grandfather. It has plenty of power, it compact and if he stays out of the menu it is turn on and talk! Does it have a CB band he would not use all the other coverage.
Yes, it can be modified to 11 meters. Just add a 1K resistor at the front edge of the board where there are two empty holes.
33:40 right side, third button down.
They should have just went on and called it the President "Reagan". Would have been much more cool/awesome.
I'd been willing to bet that this radio will do 11m aswell. Probably turn it off hold in two buttons and then turn it back on again.
nope, you have to install a component on the pcb, then key in a special pass code number to enable 11m band. You want be able to just press and hold a few keys, this will be done at dealers.
Will you convert this radio to 11 meters just for testing & demonstration?
They asked me not to. It's simple to do. Looking at the board with parts facing up there are two empty holes at the left front edge. Just install a 1K ohm resistor there, turn radio on, go into menu "PD" and enter code 123456 and it enables full frequency coverage.
MikesRadioRepair Ok. Thanks for the explanation of it!
How do you put in "pd" in the radio. I can't get to the first letter, only the third one on line, the first two seem can't change.
Ronald reagan?
why not 11 meters?
It does with modification. They asked me not to in the review video.
It can,but has to be dealer modified for CB use.
What does the audio sound like?
Weak
It has echo? I take back what I said! LOL
That’s incredibly illegal, FM on HF ham radio bands.
Maybe in your country but it's not in the US. There's a 10 meter FM repeater only a few miles from my location that's owned by the local amateur radio club. FM is allowed on the 10 meter band. Might want to check your ARRL frequency allocation chart.
