You must buy the thick 19mm socket for $25. The impact gun would take it out in 2 seconds flat. No heat required.
Yes! This! My crankshaft bolt was stuck and wouldn’t budge with heat, penetrating oil, breaker bars, etc. The only way I got it out was with the thick socket and an impact wrench. I wish I had started with that because I ended up with several wasted workdays while waiting on the socket.

...and frankly, I like it when you come up against a problem (like that crank pulley bolt) because it helps ME, an average mechanic, realize that I'm not the only one who experiences ridiculous, time-consuming problems like that.

@@StephenBoucher no he is talking about the hexagon shaped crank socket. just need to mark a spot on the bolt matching one of the vertices and just turn to the next vertex

Just did t belt job today I advise if you are doin this job buy the lisle crank bolt socket I did and it is worth every penny . Took it right off 1st time no hassle no heat so silly hair dryer no 4ft breaker bar no honda crank octagon socket . Funny how they say it 1a auto kit but a rebranded gates kit .gates kit is made in China I went with aisin kit made in Japan . Took me 4hrs 1st time doing job . This video made all the difference. helped with step by step . I have a 09 odyssey to get engine mount bolts out you have to remove engine computer and remove entire right side engine mount to get both top bolts out . Just so u all know otherwise same for both also I used a grade 8 bolt to compress t belt tensioner did not bend . Thanks for good video I recommend to u 1a auto to start selling crank bolt socket. Great video. So much so, it helped me realize I shouldn't do this repair as it's beyond my amateur ability. I paid my local mechanic $1,250 to do it and in hindsight I don't regret it. I have learned to do brakes, fluid changes, etc and would have loved to save the money on this repair. But in my garage, alone, it was too much. But good job on a well-lighted, well done step-by-step video.

Great video! Kudos to you for not cursing up a storm when you were trying to get that main pulley bolt out and the engine mount, too! I also appreciate that you show all the goof-ups that the typical home mechanic would also do.

Am so glad to see that even the professional mechanics have trouble at times with bolts. Backyard mechanics like me wonder at times what we are doing wrong when having trouble and getting frustrated. Keep up the great videos and narrations.
Firstly, this Video was EXCELLENT!!! I hope these comments can help the next person out - in no particular order:
- Power steering pump is so easy to move simply by pulling the hose from the reservoir (just be prepared to catch the fluid). I didn't mess around with unclipping the reservoir to keep everything intact.
- My 2012 Pilot Touring DOES NOT have the hydraulic tensioner on the accessory/serp belt. Simply use a ratchet/breaker bar with socket to remove tension, and slide the serp belt off.
- My cams got a little caddywumpus with the timing belt off, so I needed to realign them. I stupidly used a ratchet instead of a breaker bar, and they "flopped" about 70 degrees (due to the internal spring tension). No big deal - it won't hurt anything with the motor off, but I needed to bring them back up to TDC. By using a small breaker bar, you can ensure that they won't OVERROTATE if you need to make a small adjustment.
- Yeah, you need an INSANE amount of torque to get that Crank bolt out. I broke a 3/4" to 1/2" reducer when I attempted removing it with my giant 3/4" breaker bar. I ended up using a 30" 1/2" breaker with another 2' of pipe for leverage. DAY-UM. The 50mm hex tool is NOT OPTIONAL - must have it for the job.
- Getting the engine mount off (and reinstalled) was a PITA and it required a bunch of different sockets (1/4" and 3/8") to get it to work with the limited space. In the video it says you are up against the firewall - you are not - you are actually up against the chassis side of the mount with the large rubber bushing. If you don't have the luck of having the right tools, just remove the giant bushing - you'll have ample room to work. This would be done from the top side of the vehicle.
- Releasing tension on the timing belt - I think the reason the bolt bent in the video is not because it was low-grade - there is no room to get a socket on the bolt without deflecting it A LOT. It was likely bending as it was being screwed down. SOLUTION: simply turn it all the way down by hand, then take your time an use an open wrench to bottom it out. It really doesn't take that long, and you won't bend the narrow bolt. I used a grade 8 and no issues.
- I never had to remove the crank guide plate... I actually liked leaving it on to provide a nice hold on the belt during reinstall.
- Seriously - double and triple check your crank and cam marks!!! See Above - I was OFF by one on the back side of the motor and thank god I re-checked. I needed to release the tension and redo the belt, but it would have been a mess if I hadn't.
Don't do this job unless you have all the tools - especially a lot of different size wrenches, sockets and extensions. Otherwise you'll need to buy or borrow them and this will stall your project. I'd budget a day for this if you've never done something like this before. I also have a lift - this job would be hellish on jackstands/ the ground. NOTE: If you have a lift, just use a pole jack to lower and raise the motor with engine mount off - easier than a floor jack IMHO. Good luck :)

Excellent video and presentation! To prevent the bolt used to compress the tensioner from bending, perhaps put a nut on the bolt once it is threaded thru the eye, then place a socket between the nut and the tensioner to reduce the length of the bolt extending below the eye. Might eliminate having to cut the bolt as shown in the video.
That was the best video I have seen yet on this job. I am going to start on my wife’s 2012 Pilot tomorrow and there was so much good info here I feel so much more confident in the job. Excellent attention to details by the top flight mechanic in this. You guys are the best!

This is a great video. It doesnt skip over the real world problems one runs into working on an older car. I wish I had videos like this when I was a kid. I remember tacking a weekend to break free an old celica crank bolt . It was glued on too. We did not know that. I forget how we eventually got it, but I know we damaged it. In fact im not sure we even freed it on the first weekend of working on it. This is how it works on old cars. Patience, and tricks of the trade, and usually some experience. And big ass breaker bars.

Big information included at about 45:00 was the Tensioner Pulley bolt - 18 ftlbs. Thats a difficult spec to find. Even the timing belt kit instructions do not list that.

Having considered the difficulties you went through I will try the method shown in the video " Loosen Crankshaft Pulley Bolt by Bump Starting the Engine (01Aug21)" . Curious here, may I ask: If the tensioner is already pushing the belt to a loose condition couldn't we just unbolt it?

Thats what I did too. I do most my own work, but no way am I doing this.
With time and patience it can be done. Of course, If you have the money to pay someone else to do it, that saves you some stress. But of course, take it to a professional because there is a lot of things an apprentice can get wrong.

The highest video quality I saw so far! Out of curiosity, I did saw the kits include a shim, but it was not used. Any chirping issue afterwards? My 08 pilot had gone through two times reinstalling the AISIN timing belt, each last several weeks before the low chirping noise came back. Now, I have to deal with the tilted idler pulley. Damn Honda!

Great video!! I have a question, what would be the alignment of the timing marks on the cams if the timing belt broke and needed to be replaced?

What I have always done on my Honda's is before I take the crank bolt off I turn the engine to put the timing marks at TDC on the crank and both cams. That way should something move you know exactly where it goes back to. You don't explain that in the beginning but you do talk about it after the belt is on. Nice video.

Awesome video. So helpful. Thank you much. Just some quick feedback that your video didn't show: Honda recommends some new engine oil be added to the crankshaft bolt when installing. This may help when it needs to be removed in the future.

After reading several reviews I have decided to just buy the timing belt parts from a Honda dealer. The main problem is this is an interference motor meaning if the belt has a problem engine is toast. The most common issue is the tensioner if that goes out good chance the belt will skip a tooth and engine is done. Cars of this age not worth overhauling an engine.

Watched throughout my repair. I did actually removed the motor mount which wasn’t hard, and resolved the tight area issue with the engine mount. Otherwise excellent video. Only issue for me was a small washer that came off the serpentine tensioner, not sure where it goes.

I just replaced my timing belt on my 06 Lexus Rx330 for the first time. The crankshaft bolt would not come off with my impact gun so I blipped the gun to tighten the bolt and then hit reverse and it came off. 👍🏼
By the 16:00 min mark I thought they were gonna just say “ok, well the timing belt is probably good after all. See you next time on 1A Auto”
I can only hope that my Honda dealer did a professional job, such as this mechanic did! They recommended that this be done with only 60,000 miles, 7 yrs. on a 2015 Pilot. When I did this, I fought with that darn Harmonic Balancer bolt for half a day before using the starter to bump it, which worked like a charm. However, the fear in me that something would go flying using that method was enough that it was truly my last resort. Getting ready to do this again at 220,000 miles so thought I would refresh my memory. Hopefully it comes off easier this time since it was off once before.
Awesome video, I've watched 5 other videos and this one is by far the best, details matter, sequence, quality of video and light everything is great. i have one little question, what size is that bolt that helps remove the tension-er on the timing cable (26:46) is it M6-1.0 how long?
