  • There's a long list of games that I think would never get a sequel, but somehow have and Dragon's Dogma was always one of them. With the second entry soon upon us, many may be looking back and wondering if the first game is worth a try. Rise, arisen. Your time has come!

    For those who decided to give this game a go, try not to speak to npcs too much because they might end up falling in love with you. My first playthrough ended with me being with some balding shopkeeper... If you do get someone you don't want giving you goo-goo eyes, just unsheath your weapon a few times and their affinity for you goes down.

    The pawn system is the defining thing about DD: some people love playing solo as an assassin vocation for max damage, but pawns actually learn to play better with time.
    Personally the first time I saw my pawn imitating my own attack patterns against a particular enemy, I was in awe.
    One of the best and underrated arpgs ever.

    The original Dragon's Dogma had armor sets of Guts and Griffith from Berserk. But due to copyright issues, they were taken out in Dark Arisen.

    • @djinnxx7050
      @djinnxx7050 6 місяців тому +6

      They weren't removed from Dark Arisen on PS3, I still have them unless the file is corrupted. It's been awhile since I dusted off the old girl but despite the resolution and letterboxing they looked great. I believe they were PlayStation exclusive content. The PS4 version sadly removed them though, because Capcom are dicks. Just pay the damn license, and then commission FromSoft to make a damn Berserk game already.
      A joint venture between Capcom and FromSoft would make me experience female ejaculation, making it a Berserk game would drown me and everyone else in the vicinity. Sorry for the crass imagery but there's no other way to express what would be the intensity of my joy, you know it's a guaranteed god tier game. Capcom and FromSoft share enough overlap, both craft dark world's well, both craft solid combat systems, both have respect for Berserk, it couldn't possibly fail. It needs to happen.

    Portcrystals were available in the OG DD, but there was maybe only 2 available in a single playthrough.
    Plus the Ferrystone cost 30K a piece.
    Dark Arisen gives you an Eternal Ferrystone in your storage upon reaching Gran Soren which allows for unlimited, FREE fast travel. You can then also obtain 5 Portcrystals in one playthrough that you'd actually place anywhere on the map to choose your own fast travel locations, a NG+ run gives you the chance to obtain another 5 Portcrystals for a Max of 10 which if strategically placed, can have you fly through the game in less then 30 minutes for Speedrun mode. It's pretty sick.

    • @DragonsDogmaEnjoyer
      @DragonsDogmaEnjoyer 6 місяців тому +3

      Worth noting the Eternal Ferrystone is only given for free in the later releases. Originally on the PS3/Xbox 360 versions it was only given to players who transfered their save file from vanilla.

    Without too many spoilers, whilsy it's true it's lacking on lots of narrative and plot , the different endings to this game synergise well with each other and i felt that those portions do tell a story quite intriguing that essentially relates to cycles within cycles, concepts of fate and so on.
    And the Dark Arisen dungeon content and story doesn't truly do itself justice untill you've done a 2nd playthrough and it's story relates to those who try to defy their fate, basically showing that all Arisen are trapped.

    the thing about taking on a tough enemy and it being worth it is really true. I remember fighting an ogre and a chimera at the same time for real world hours. In game, it cycled from day to night and day, and during the night, those skellies came out and joined the battle (I never killed them, cos the battle kept pushing throughout the land that I ended up despawning them by day time, lol.) and then when I finally defeated them (I was waaayy under levelled mind you) I got tens almost twenty levels at the end, and I felt really satisfied.

    Quick pawn tip. If you're making a sorcerer pawn don't upgrade their spells like gicel, bolide, comestion, ect. Pawns only cast the highest level version of things they have learned/equipped. There isn't much of a damage increase for the higher tier spells compared to the greatly increased casting time. Also don't teach them the magic agent skill.

    • @djinnxx7050
      @djinnxx7050 6 місяців тому

      Could just teach them miasma, and then give them only miasma. It may not be the most efficient pawn in terms of dps or utility, but it'll still help you destroy most things. You just have to keep enemies busy, miasma will do the rest. If I remember correctly, the tick actually interrupts and staggers some enemies as well, it's been awhile but I distinctly remember something happening to that effect.
      But then again, rusty weapons exist. Technically the best weapons in the game, especially on the right pawn. Or to use yourself if you're a strider/assassin. Poison is kinda OP against the majority of enemies, and torpor is OP against everything. Once you fight diamon using torpor, it's kinda hard to fight him normally.

    • @bobroberts2581
      @bobroberts2581 6 місяців тому +3

      Spell sync works wonders, and if you have the high speed casting ring and perks you can start Grand Bolide, use the Syncro circle to get off a grand Bolide, allowing you to “start” casting again.
      Casting in a Syncro circle makes you join at their progress rate.
      Having 5-6 grand bolides pounding the enemies over a good 5-15 seconds is funny AF.

    • @ayrshark9314
      @ayrshark9314 6 місяців тому

      @@bobroberts2581 It's fine if the player upgrades, but the pawns are still best left with the basic. The pawns can still spell sync with you making their casts instant if you've charged a higher tier spell than them. Assuming you get the time to charge up something higher than the basic version. Also, the extra meteors aren't as helpful as you'd think since most of them don't target anything anyway. Better to have the faster cast time in the end.

    It's awesome to see you make this video today.
    I love Dragon's Dogma. I first played the original version on the Xbox 360 and then I eventually bought the Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen version on Xbox 360. They eventually shutdown the servers for the Xbox 360 version and I was a little bummed out but I was so happy when I learned it was getting ported to 8th gen consoles. I even own the Strategy guide.
    I then bought the Xbox One version of Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen but only played it for about 2 hours. I finally started to actually play the Xbox One version this month on my Xbox Series X, and I'm currently 40 hours into the game and about half way through the story. Dragon's Dogma is one of my all time favorite games. The world once it expands and you go out into the world, you just get lost in it. I really don't remember much of the story other than you getting your back. But I will always remember beating my first troll in a cave when I thought I was going to die. And the fear of fighting at night and knowing you have stronger mobs to face gave some challenge and excitement you rarely see now a days. You can have difficulty spikes without having controller throwing levels of difficulty. Dragon's Dogma found that sweet spot. And I loved the armor and how you would upgrade the armor. It made fighting enemies fun because it wasn't just about leveling but finding the one item you need to upgrade that axe or something into a badass upgrade. And the pawn system was revolutionary. The fact your pawns or the ones you got from others learned from battles was mind-blowing. I hope and pray that DD 2 just expands on this ability and doesn't fall prey to the live service trend of microtransaction and it stays the course similar to what BG 3 did. Great video by the way.

    What I like most about DD compared to other fantasy RPG games is that the creatures they fight are rooted in mythology and not there own made up monster like in Final Fantasy or Monster hunter. The final boss is a stereotypical dragon! And that’s awesome! A straight forward fantasy tale

    Fast travel was in the original. It was limited and you had to earn more crystals to place around the world. The lack of fast travel wasn’t a detriment, but added to the immersion. You couldn’t just go, “oh noes! It’s getting dark! Better fast travel back to town so I can sleep until morning!” It made your face the night and the dangers that came with it. I loved this world. Wandering the environment, the wind rustling the trees, the dust kicking off trails. The fear of the dark and what lurked within.

No fast travel was one of the worst parts of this game but I believe fast travel Portcrystals were in the game before Dark Arisen. I remember the dumbest part about them was you didn't get access to them till it was towards the end of the game after you already traveled back and forth 1000s of miles.

    I love the words from the developer why he created this game. In a world that started to lean towards online party raids from like Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy 11 and 14, he saw that they were great. His issue, which i relate to a lot, is if you don't have online friends or even if you do, you have to do parties to do certain raids or missions. It required planning out. If no friends, queuing in other online players takes a long time and some will play enough and go afk. I relate to this! This is a rewarding game for solo offline player or players who doesn't have online friends to do party raids/missions. How? Pawn system. Though not perfect but it does enough to feel like you are in a raid or party. Excited for Dragon's Dogma 2 because the Pawn System will be an upgrade.

    • @djinnxx7050
      @djinnxx7050 6 місяців тому +3

      The problem with the story, I assume for most people, is that you have to fill in a bit of it yourself, like read between what few lines there are and then think it through. And a lot of people seem to have issues with that. And it's kinda philosophically deep, the kinda depth that the writer will probably wave away as "Pfft, I was just writing nonsense." genuinely unaware of the brilliance he's brought forth, as many artists are.
      *beware, some minor spoilers ahead*
      I personally think the story is great, the way it starts kinda generic fantasy with an evil Dragon that for some reason steals your heart, posing the question "why?", and then said Dragon basically goes "Come at me, bro.", and off you set to reclaim your heart with some bollocks along the way. And at some point, you do just that, only for the happy ending you expected to fall to pieces as the world turns to shit, the city is swallowed into a chasm, and you with the task to now repair the damage you somehow inadvertently caused by slaying the Dragon and reclaiming your heart, which then eventually leads you to becoming a god and starting another cycle.
      I like the questions it poses, not directly but that you naturally ask, such as if the Dragon really is a bad guy, an enemy, or for good, or just another pawn of the gods, despite no gods really being mentioned as far as I remember. The Dragon goes from evil to kinda morally ambiguous, and it arguably requires the input of the player to do so, Grigori (the Dragon) tells you all chill like after his defeat that you're going places, he seems satisfied, proud of you even, like the right choice has been made and now it's in your hands, you've freed him, and now it's time to free yourself (arguably the philosophy behind the story, ones own volition, to determine your own fate. I could be wrong, hence "arguably", but it is kinda spoken). But I feel it is you that has to intuit that to a degree, it isn't just handed to you as a finished article, the pieces are on the table but you have to pick them up and peice them together. Sort of like Dark Souls, dare I say, but not as much lore. Or maybe I'm overblowing it, thinking too much a little too freely. I think what is perhaps missed by many, in terms of importance to the narrative, is the words spoken by the dragons you slay. Many dragons you come across and slay will say something like "the seat of god lies beyond", which you think means little until that second run and you use your head to connect the dots. All these dragons, they're not mad, they're in awe of the arisen and praising him/her. Why? Maybe you're setting them free.
      And that NG+ run feeling samey at first until that big reveal, the seneschel being your previous character and thus the reveal of the cycle, the game itself technically has no end. The one issue I have with that is that after using the sword on yourself, you fall to earth with your pawn becoming sentient and replacing you, taking your form, the pawn becomes you. So how is the senseschel your previous character when the pawn took over your body, is he/she sentient or did they swap so this god is essentially your pawn?
      The fact that a failed arisen, as in slayed by the senseschel (is that the right spelling? Meh, basically a god) becomes the next Dragon tasked to seek out and challenge the next potential arisen, that's a pretty impactful revelation too. It's not the tightest narrative and it feels like it was whipped up kinda quickly but there's some depth to it that captured me, a moment of genius from the writer that kept it living rent free in my head for a decade. Perhaps just me giving it more credence than it deserves but meh, I like not knowing all the answers. When a narrative fails to come full circle and seal itself, it isn't always a bad thing.

      @@djinnxx7050 Love that you took the time to write this, went on my own rant earlier about the story. If I could share my theory about the seneschal, they always pull the godslaying blade from their chests, you just put it into yours and at that moment shed your physical body. I think your pawn merges with your former physical body and lives as a regular human. Plunging the blade in your heart was just that final step in becoming the Maker.

    • @djinnxx7050

      @@Volgeirea I honestly can't remember how you get that sword, does it just appear in the inventory after beating Grigori, or do you get it after beating the senseschel?
      I remember the first time I "beat" the game, I ran around lost like what the fuck am i supposed to do now, I must have looked at that sword an embarrassing number of times before I decided to actually use it. I love that it doesn't even mention the sword, that in itself completes the narrative because you as the player do that act of your own volition. Nothing pushes you towards it, no guidance, just curiosity and free will, the traits of consciousness that make us human, and traits that pawns lack.
      Do you think the second is going to rival it?

      This is why I never wanted DD2 to have co-op. That would destroy one of the main draws of the game, which is managing pawns and seeing them grow.
      Capcom got it right from the start when they didn't include co-op in the main game but made a separate one, Dragon's Dogma Online, for that instead. Now if they'd only release Online in the West... or maybe make a new DD co-op spinoff if DD2 sells well.

    I remember getting it when it originally came out, before the Dark Arisen DLC (which eventually became the true version of the game). I got it for both Steam & the 360 at the time. I really dug the pawn system, it was really innovative for its time. That you could "loan" your pawn to others, & they'd learn things during their adventures with them was a concept I adored. The overall weakness of the game to me was that the kingdom was relatively small, so it got repetitive very quickly. The way the game ended (pre Dark Arisen) also irked me.

    It's interesting to me how many reviews for this game praise it and praise it but then say the story is nothing to write home about but yet we praise games like dark souls for its deep lore with minimal direct storytelling. The lore for this game is crazy cool and the eternal ring is such an awesome concept to build a game world around, the fact that the dragon is an arisen who failed to become the seneschal, the pawns being a people without will however actual humans in the game are proven to not have a will either, then it's shown that the Arisen who was supposed to have free will is just another cog in a great wheel, he's destined to continue the cycle of eternal return. And when one arisen attempts to change that (The Dark Arisen) he's then known as the bad guy in the story. Everything in the DLC (And I would argue most of the main game too) is a masterfully told tale that the players have to seek out themselves, a storytelling method praised by so many in this community at this point, but the entire story is also completely hidden within THE MAIN SONG OF THE DLC "Coils of Light", which they did with "Eternal Return" to a lesser degree in the main story too. But, tragic this Dark Arisen character's story may be, and so aligned with what most believe to be the main goal of the game that you can never achieve (ie, finishing the cycle that you just perpetuate), you stop him from doing just that - that thing YOU thought you were supposed to do as the player. You stop him.
    But the story of this game isn't strong I guess.

    • @Volgeirea

      And I have to also throw in here, the first time I beat Grigori, I cheered. It was a long and epic battle that was incredible. The credits rolled, and I thought "wow that was a lot of fun. Too bad it's over." and then everything about the world changed and my mind was BLOWN. This game was never about killing the dragon, that was just a means to an end. And then I spent 2 hours on the Daemon fight, beat him and thought that I did it cool, kept playing normally then went back to the island and the entire dungeon was tougher as if to mirror how the grigori fight messed the whole world up! So after beating Grigori, then the Seneschal, then the Seneschal again to realize it was just my last character, and then Daemon coming back! I thought this game was done too many times and it had more to give each time. *Huf* okay I'm good now, I got that out of my system. lol.

    My little brother used to play this all the time on the PS3. I wasn't really interested in it. Maybe because at the time, I was kinda obsessed with Ratchet & Clank games at the time. Still back then, this a pretty under-the-radar action game before the Capcom boon of the late 2010s.
