- First mod up for our little Barra is a Cold Air Intake Upgrade.
We've gone with an aftermarket box and pod filter setup from Kustomshop and used the better flowing intake section from, of all things, a Territory!
Induction noise is hugely improved with this setup, there should be a small power increase, and it's ready to support our next mods.
Hope you enjoy and make sure you're subscribed for the rest of this series, we're really excited for this one.

keen to see the next upgrade, not many people work on na xr6s so it is hard to find any good videos on them.
cheers
@Jack Workman Thanks mate, can’t promise any good videos but have a few more coming up in the series so hope you enjoy!
for an alternative to this, I did a cold air intake as follows to my BA Fairmont, I used a BA xr-6 turbo snorkel (twice as big as the stock unit) and ordered an F6 typhoon lower snorkel off Ford which fits to the front of the air box, simply cut a slot in the box and fit and the snorkel sits under the headlight and draws in cold air in under the light. Then fit a K&N hi-flow filter and all sorted.
Browney just found your channel and as a holden man i still love it, especially the dead pan humor keep it up
Thanks mate! Whilst most of my car history is Ford stuff I have no brand loyalty so don't be surprised if we have some more Holden content on here one day 👍
7:45, in the States, we use Play Dough...
Now send me a Barra...
Need one for my 1951 Ford F3 pickup truck...
@Joe Schlotthauer Oh yeah good idea, think I’ve used Blu-Tack before too. Cool truck mate, that would be a sweet project with a Barra, I have a feeling you’ll be seeing lots more of them over there shortly 👍
I like the attention to detail, thoughtfulness about final appearance and sense of humor in your videos, well done.
Glad you liked it mate, and thanks for watching!
@@BrowneysGarage I actually found you channel because I am thinking about buying an 05 BA Fairlane and just wanted to see what issues I might face with it.
Nice one Browney - That toothpaste trick is gold! Much cleaner than using grease, and excellent for the Barra's plaque control! Cheers!
😂 Thanks mate! Been enjoying some of your travel series lately, great stuff 👍
@@BrowneysGarage Ah Cheers Browney! Plenty more coming up on that one too - lots of 'do not try this at home' moments lol!
Thanks for all these videos Browney! Getting a ba falcon soon and these videos help so much
Awesome, enjoy the new car mate and thanks for watching.
Gday mate, love the vids. Really well made. You’re great to listen to. Keep em coming
Thanks mate, glad you enjoy and that's very kind. Plenty more to come 👍
Great video my man, I'm looking to do this on my falcon and maybe even my project car. Keep up the good work! 🇦🇺
@Dacey O’Donnell Thanks mate. Definitely not a bad upgrade, the induction noise is much better than I even thought it’d be.
Cheers for watching 👍
Good stuff! I have a BA na too and have done a lot of stuff on it. Recently had the exhaust off to do Welch plugs. Maybe something worth checking out on the next vid as mine were rusty and leaking chunks of rust into the block from the back. Looking forward to your next vid!
@dev10199 Nice, sounds great mate. May or may not have already finished the exhaust this week... I’ll just carry on in ignorance of the Welch plugs for now cause I don’t want it back off! Thanks for the idea though mate, probably should have considered it at the time.
loving the videos mate keep up the good work can't wait to see what's next :)
@BGAMERMAX Legend thanks mate, working hard to keep bringing more 👍
Thanks man your videos have helped me out alot I was able to fix both my bumper sag and lower my car with minimal automotive skills 👌🏽💯
@Jason Edwards That’s awesome man, well done and thanks for letting me know. Means a lot to know these are actually helping people.
Amazing once you see something done to realise how achievable it is to do at home yourself! I do it myself as well watching others.
Nice vid. On my FRG XR6T, I tried;
cutting the bottom out of the stock airbox - worked a bit better
Bought the v8 airbox - looks similar, but bigger pipe - ok
Cut the bottom of the v8 air box - worked a bit better
Bought a KPM treet fighter cai - this unit is a clone of the F6 cai, and sucks truly cold air. This was the best of all for mild boost, eg 15psi, but even the KPM cai would not allow much higher boost than 18psi untill I swapped the intake over to the other side for a more direct route - then 24psi :).
I tried the v8 box on my FG na - not much change
I now have the KPM cai on my FG na, and with no other modes, this car is transformed, much stronger mid range, especially in cold weather, with everything else stock.
It is very important for your engine to be chugging down truley cold air - make sure it does.
Great content bro enjoying the build want to do similar to my xr6, already have a growler intake next is exhaust 👍
@sollydogg Awesome, hopefully you’ll enjoy our next video then. Thanks for watching mate.
Very informative mate, thanks heaps!
@IMDECLARINGWAR Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed!
Love all your vids bro ! Not many vids on na xr6s. I just put a whole new exhaust system on my ba xr6 na. I went with the brand Dandy. I went for the middle muffler delete, with good flow pacemaker headers and hi flow cat. For a thousand dollars I got the heavy duty system I got it all instead and the old one disposed, all up 1000 dollars. I would say it has gained around 18 hp.
Thanks mate and glad your happy with that exhaust. For the price I've been very happy with mine as well, definitely picked up a bit 👍
Onya Browney, good stuff & entertaining :)
@pete _www Awesome, thanks for watching mate 👍
Nice video, well done, I enjoy watching any car mods.
Would be interesting to see a before and after on a dyno though. It looks nice but the stock intake already is a cold air intake (possibly a better design too), plus the stock air filter has a decent size/surface area compared to a pod. I just find it hard that this would be a improvement, other then looking nice/modded.
To be clear, I’m not claiming this will give any BIG gain. I think it could give small gain maybe but at very least I’d expect it’s not a step backwards being still in an enclosed box. Would be good to do some testing on this on these big 6’s, has been done before on others though.
That said, the induction noise from it alone is just about worth it I think.
Thanks for watching mate 👍
...did the same with my car plus extractors, made an extra 15 kw.
I'm using this time out to work on my BA too.
@Boss Dog Didn’t think I’d say this until recently but I’m lucky enough to still be busy working away at my regular job!
Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed mate 👍
best vid so far
Great vid 👍
Just got me own barra and am doing alot of these
@Bobby Holden Awesome, they’re pretty good for what you pay for them these days. Hope you enjoy your new ride mate 👍
Good video mate keep up the good work.. always look forward to watching .
@Chris Cumming Thanks heaps mate, working hard here to keep them rolling 👍
@@BrowneysGarage I just had a Rex-H youtuber do a review on my bf xr8.. I didnt know how hard it would be to talk in front of a camera until he had me on camera talking about my car. Mate my hat goes off you all you UA-camr's .
It’s a very strange and unnatural thing to do - try doing it when it’s just you in the garage most the time!
And that sounds great, I’ll have to head over and check out the video .
@@BrowneysGarage hey did you have a catback system on the green beast?
@Chris Cumming I didn’t up to this point, full exhaust has just been finished and will be next video up.
An alternative option is the MACE Engineering CAI kit; It's exactly the same setup and comes with lid for $238. Maybe doesn't look as good as this one, but it does the exact same job and costs a little less, so if you're in the market check it out. Thanks for the vids Browney!
Looks like another good option, and I was very close to going that way. Just barely preferred the look of this kit, and this had rubber edging where the piping goes into the air box to make sure there's no noise from this moving/vibrating. Probably not an issue but that's all that separated them really! Thanks very much mate 👍
Hey Brownie, Love the vids man! ive got a 2003 Ford Falcon BA XR6 and looking to follow your mods and was just wondering what you used as spacers to fit the ford territory part.
They’re the ones the territory uses, when you find the donor, just take them with you when you unbolt them.
Blue tack on the high spots as like you would check piston to valve clearence an its reusable
Good call and have used this for other jobs but I needed something that would transfer as well so I could see not only IF it hit, but also where.
ok its taken me 6 hours to wake up since this was posted, but great video brownie. btw paint everything red as it goes fasted down the 1/4 mile hahahaha
Thanks Bryan. Red of course why am I wasting my time on anything else, I’ll get on it! 🤣
@@BrowneysGarage hahah, well that's what everyone had been saying about red. it explains why I had so many speeding tickets along the ring road maybe before I painted my car black
Yep that definitely sounds like it was the reds fault and not anyone else’s! Haha
I’ve never had a red car so I’ll need to work on another excuse.
@@BrowneysGarage well maybe it was the cars fault a little since it was the EF and I changed the gearbox from the pov pack to a fairmont and didnt know about the gear cog speed thing had different tooth ratio for the first few months.
On the Barra if you haven;t moved the battery to the other side and the pod filter to where the battery was its mainly cosmetic
@Joe VAN DIJK Battery relocation is more a turbo thing on these cars due to the location of the intake on the turbo. No need really to do so on a NA that I know of, and may even be better not to to keep it away from the exhaust side of the engine. There will be some performance gains from this system, but only what you'd typically get from any intake upgrade.
Hey mate, I have a 2003 falcon wagon (future) and I am keen to do this upgrade for the nice noise it makes for a low price. Is it nessecary for me to source a different air snorkel like you did from the territory or will the stock one work well enough? Love the video mate. Cheers from New Zealand.
@Charlie Jackson Hey mate, not necessary at all and is likely only making the tiniest difference anyway. Should be good just to replace the air box set up, and for the intake noise I can highly recommend it.
Awesome to have another Kiwi on board, thanks for watching mate 👍
I have a 2010 SY2 Territory with the Barra 190 and was wondering if you knew if this would work on it? I want to do a few things to it (have never done and mods before) and this seems pretty friendly for beginners.
They're pretty similar but not 100% if the engine bay is shaped the same for the mounting of the airbox sorry. Maybe just email the seller of the particularly kit you're looking at to confirm?
So is the car still getting enough air with the snorkel removed?
Good info but do you have to change mass air flow sensor and regig the ECU? For these mods, including exhaust system. How does this a stock 2011 FG XR6?
No need to tune at all for the intake. If fitting a full exhaust including high flow cat you may need a tune or a oxygen sensor extension on the rear sensor, it CAN throw an engine code without this because it will think the cat has failed. For more on this check out the comments in that video, has been asked a few times 👍
I went for a Herrod on my 2014 XR6 EcoLpi. Although it sounds nice, my low end suffered and my fuel consumption increased. Perhaps I need an exhaust and tune.
@K J I've never had a similar issue on any cars I've done a simple intake upgrade on, I could be missing something or perhaps it was just bad timing as another issue popped up? But if you're looking for a good excuse to do the exhaust and tune then why not!
Would be interested to know if there was an increase. If there was it wouldn't very much but being such an easy and very cheap mod it could lead to more air flow mods, maybe?
@GlensGraphix Hey Glen, honestly there probably wouldn’t be much gain alone but hopefully more air in, more air out and we’ll see a change 🤔. Would love to test something like this in isolation one day on a dyno.
For the price though I could probably justify it for the look and induction noise alone, for myself anyway.
@@BrowneysGarage It was more the smoother flow of air I was thinking of than power increase. But that would be very difficult to work out unless you were a lab coat wearing, propeller head :)
Keep 'em coming. It's good to watch a regular bloke in his shed doing mods.
@GlensGraphix Ah right, I got you. Well I could buy a lab coat but doubt I could fake the rest!
Thanks mate, that’s the idea 👍
Great stuff! Im hoping to following along, however, I have an BA XT will this kit still work? cheers for the content
@Harry Kokkoris Awesome, thanks mate. The XR6 and XT are nearly the exact same car with the exception of the obvious bodykit, slightly lower factory height and maybe diff ratio - they even have the same stock power! So anything we cover in this series now and going forward should work mate 👍
@@BrowneysGarage Thanks for the reply. In the the topic of XT's would the XR6 DEA exhaust kit work on the XT, even though they have a seperate kit for the XT? Im just curious if its only difference is so it looks like the original XT setup. Cheers
@Harry Kokkoris Oh good call, hadn’t thought about it but the XT doesn’t have the bumper cut out for the exhaust so may be a touch different at the tip end for that. Otherwise will fit up the same, as mentioned in the video I’ve been really happy with that kit and the price of it.
@@BrowneysGarage ahh yes didn't think of that. Might have to make a cut or change the angle a bit. Thanks for the replies. Subbed!
Hey mate, hoping you’ll get back to me. How long did your intake take to get her mate
Just wondering if I put that exact same set up in my BF falcon do I need to get a tune ?
@Clay Gallagher Hey mate, no need at all for a tune with this.
Any restriction on an NA motor will cause a power loss at top end of RPM. Higher RPM's need more intake airflow and exhaust flow, if you upgrade your intake and exhaust on any NA engine with quality aftermarket parts that reduce some of the factory restrictions. you will definetely see improvements. A noticable power increase can be gained at the higher RPM. It extends the power curve on the dyno chart, so say for example at 3000 rpm you reach a top power of 200kw then between 3000rpm and 4500 rpm you maintain that 200kw but it starts declining slightly to say 170kw then at redline it drops to 150kw. Thats the restrictions with stock intake and exhausts.. the exhaust is usually the most restrictive (catalytic converters and mufflers are the main cause). Change them over to high flow, upgrade your intake manifold add a cold air intake, you will definetely hold the 200kw for longer and the power drop will start to occur at a higher RPM. Go check out chris fixes videos on his mustang, specifically the exhaust and intake videos. He dynos the car before and after and you can see a huge difference at the higher RPM. He gains an extra 50kw near redline. But peak power did drop a bit by about 3-4kw. More consistant power throughout the rev range is definetelty a plus for an NA engine.
so smaller bottom end power?
Any other options for upgrades on the throttle body pipes that you can suggest I don’t really wanna use one from a ford territory
Not that I’ve used sorry mate. Truth be told they probably make next to no difference power wise unless you’re really going extreme so I guess it comes down to what you prefer looks wise?
Hi I have a ford falcon MK2 2007 can I wat athere mod can we do
is it a bad idea to keep the stock piping to the throttle body? or do you need to upgrade it?
@Tyler Forster I believe the stock piping to the throttle body is all the same size or larger than the throttle body and to my knowledge shouldn’t be a restriction at all.
where’d u get ur chrome gear selector tiptronic from?? and is it 4 speed auto?
@Jake Ritchie Correct, it's a 4 speed. And picked it up from eBay - ebay.to/3j4ywqF
We covered this more in a full video if you'd like to check it out - ua-cam.com/video/60xxG3LICGI/v-deo.html
I just purchased mine and had difficulty fitting as well
Interesting, wonder if it's some very small difference in the shape of the metal under the airbox or some other factor.
You're fitting issue wasn't due to the car being damaged or the skirt being replaced was it. Im a Panel beater and you would be surprised how many things can be different on replacement parts from original, especially on Fords.
It’s entirely possible mate! I’d believe it but sure some of it is still pretty shocking.
Hey browney what year model territory did you get the piping off?
Hey mate, was off an SX but believe SY would be exact same too.
@@BrowneysGarage legend thanks mate
Hey mate how has your 4 speed auto been ? I've heard horror stories with the BTR and just wondering if I should expect issues..
Horror stories about the BTR? The only issues they had with them that I know of was the oil contamination that we sorted in another video with the external trans cooler. Otherwise they’re normally really hard to kill.
Sure you’re not thinking of the later 5 speed auto?
@@BrowneysGarage I have a the BTR 4-speed too, i prefer those gearboxes over the 5-6 speed ZF, reason being is price to repair or replace is much cheaper...that's what my mechanic said, anyway.
@@lobsterwhisperer7932 Yep definitely a pro there, can pick up a BTR anywhere and change it real easy - not the case with the 6 speed from what I've seen and servicing is much more.
6 speed does make them quicker when it's working though.
Only when they get hot they clunk thru gear change, easily fixed with bigger trans cooler & higher grade bolts for the trans valve body.
Can modify valve body too if you want to go further for performance!
@lobsterwhisperer7932 btr lasts so much longer and 5 speed 6 speed are both clunky and have crap lifespans so you are absolutely correnlct my guy. ❤
would this fit bf models?
Sure will mate 👍
Ford's Rule🇦🇺👍
When u paired the intake and sent one cover how did u do it paint straight over top ??
Painted and the engine cover
@Hayden Reynolds The paint on the old intake and coil cover? It was like that when I bought it sorry but I assume it was cleaned really well and perhaps scuffed up to help the paint stick, plastic primered and then painted.
Will this fit 2005 territory
@j AhDamm Not 100 but I’d guess the Territory engine bay is different enough to not fit unfortunately. To be sure though maybe contact Kustomshop, they’ll be able to give you a definite answer.
Thanks for watching mate
@@BrowneysGarage thanks for replying
Hi. I wanted to put it on my territory.. Did u get it to fit..
I like the green engine
Just put a turbo on it
Now that you've put toothpaste in it, time to call it MINTY because it's green.
@Vinny V 🤣 That's not a bad idea! Thanks for watching mate.
You do realise you already have factory cold air intake
Bit of color coding under the bonnet doesn't bother me what shits me is ppl ruining interiors painting the plastics it looks crap
Not really my taste either but each to their own, especially if it's well done.
