You just do it. Crowd generally won't notice. Just make sure they are really not that different like E minor and B flat major, because that would be annoying
You want to use a tool in music known as the circle of fifths. You can also use the camelot wheel, but it's better, imo, to learn the actual keys that work. There's three main ways that songs can work harmonically together: they're the same key, they're a relative major or minor (like A minor and C major, I'll explain that in a second), or they're dominant and subdominant keys. Before I go on, just a shameless plug here, I'm going to be doing some videos explaining these concepts on my channel in the coming weeks if you want to sub, you'll get notified when they go up. Basically, relative minors/majors have the same key signature which means that even though their scales start on different notes, they contain the same notes. So while the song may sound different because it's on a different scale, all the notes will work together because they all exist on the same scale. Think of it like if you had all the even numbers between 0 and 10. C major goes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and A minor starts at 6, 8, 10, 2, 4. It's not a direct parallel, but the point is that they contain all of the same notes so they harmonically will work in almost every situation. Dominant and subdominant don't work as often and requires you to listen to your ears a bit more, but keys like A minor and E minor work together because A minor might be 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and E minor is 4, 6, 8, 10, 3. Because of this, dominant and subdominant keys often work well, but don't always, you'll always have to trust your ears before any type of theory unless you have all the notes of a song memorized and can say definitively that it will work. Basically, though, using dominant and subdominant keys allows you to go from something like C major to A minor (relative) then go A minor to E minor (dominant) then go E minor to G major (relative) then go G major to D major (dominant) then go D major to B minor (relative) then go B minor to E minor (subdominant). This allows a DJ to go quickly from key to key and bounce around based on different things like energy and vibes of the songs (and the keys to an extent, there's a lot of theory behind how different keys sound and the emotions they evoke, such as majors tend to be happier and minors tend to be "sadder" in vibe, at least in western culture). This takes a bit of learning to get used to, but understanding this concept really improves your ability to mix in key, which gives you a lot of control over what you're doing with your song choice and energy levels while guaranteeing that the music will transition more seamlessly. Obviously, this is me just trying to translate it with as little music theory as possible; if you're interested, go read the wikipedia page on the Circle of fifths and just try to gain a basic understanding of the concept and then implement it in your sets and see if it helps make them sound better to you :)
Dude dude dude!!! I had to pop in on the first video I saw to comment this! I played my first set this weekend!! Your vids helped me set it off without a hitch, for 3 hrs! Thanks for your content, it was sooooo much fun! Get out of your comfort zone people and spin!!!!!!
DJ Carlo, another great tutorial. What I love best about your tutorials are the way you break down not only how to do the techniques, but also why you do it and how to practice it as well. Thank you so much!
Drop mixing is a joke, I am 45 yrs old been djing since 1989, I beat mix 100% the best music to learn on how to beat mix is trance or techno,,,,,it really helps you later on in life with all genres of music if you can actually beat mix.Cheers! I love your videos maraming salamat kayo!!!
I like your tutorials bro…perfect for beginners. I like to use drops in my sets now and then but i usually filter one out while the other is coming in, if the keys match its a mega build up!
DJ Carlo lots of love from India... I love you're Tips and tricks and there's something interesting topic in every video.. can't wait for the next trick...❤
thanks so much for your tutorials videos , It’s very helpful for beginners. May I ask a question about how do you organize music ? As far as I know, Hot Cues - jump to a cue instantly , at the push of button Memory Cues - be used to determine different starting points of a song And how do you use your hot cues / memory cues? any tips/tricks for making the most of them? thanks 🙂
also a simple tip is when a song ends and your song you want to mix to isnt the same bpm and syncing it sucks, play the song till the end and put reverb on the end then during the reverb start the next song. it works great for requests
@@djcarlo thanks Dj Carlo Atendido,i'm a great fan of yours, saw all of your videos, you're a motivation to me,and all djs around the worl, thanks for all of your great tips! from Portugal(Porto) my highest consideration. 🙋😊
Maybe as a follow up on this you could do a video on how to know what songs would fit with each other? Like mentioning key, genre etc. Not gonna lie i could probably learn a thing or two from that...
This only comes from experience. I think one of the beauties is finding 2 songs that you would never expect with each other suddenly creating a complete bomb.
Your tutorial are awesome! Could you make one like how to begin a set, like a cool intro so the DJ can be noticed! And in the same line, how to end a set, make the crowd aplaude the DJ, considering the set was good haha
what do you think what is better when doing this, holding the platter while it's already playing and turn down the volume or just play and turn it down like here?
😭😩 My Traktor Pro 3 does not have a vinyl-like stop. This is why I am switching to Rekordbox soon. Btw, this tutorial is one of the fundamentals I gotta master so thanks to you! 👍🏻
For sure Jan! I'm try to impart the knowledge I've learned over the years onto others, and I'm glad it's working! Good luck on the switch over to RB DJ!
because of this trick my gig crowd gone mad and my first gig was 500 $ just because of you all credit is your THANK YOU
I think another reason why your mix worked well was because they were melodically in the same key. All those tracks were conveniently in A Flat Minor.
How do you make a full set with songs that have different harmonic key?
You just do it. Crowd generally won't notice. Just make sure they are really not that different like E minor and B flat major, because that would be annoying
