- "Wha'll be King but Charlie?" is a Highland Jacobite song describing the great excitement the Jacobites had when Prince Charles Edward Stuart (the claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland) arrived in Scotland and rallied the Jacobites to his banner.

Rest in peace Bonnie Prince Charlie
Lived the rest of his life as a wandering drunkard. He abandoned his men without a second thought and took the last of the Jacobite funds for himself.

@Britannia it is indeed funny, even from a Jacobite perspective. Although it still is the legitiment bloodline.
@@larydbowie2659 This is why, if I was pressed for a Jacobite claimant at all, I'd be more inclined towards the Duke of Buccleuch, the senior (albeit illegitimate) Stuart actually living in Scotland. Neither claimant would make for a particularly good king, however.

My ancestors lived around the area of preston and chorley at the times of the jacobite rebellions and were english catholics. I wonder if they supported the Stuarts
Prince Charlie was Catholic, so I think your ancestors would almost certainly have supported the Stuarts, rather than the House of Orange or its Hanoverian successors.
I’m a Lancashire Catholic and suspect I would have supported him, the question is how far would you (in quite a literal sense) stick your neck out for him. I suspect there were an awful lot of people who wished him well but weren’t willing to risk their own lives in his cause.
@@resourcedragon Protestants also fought for Charles, and many Catholics fought against him.

I would be greatly interested to see your sources that point to the contrary.

How is someone who didn't fight but hung back well to the rear, and then ran away when his army was slaughtered, a hero? A waster is a better description.

My MacLean blood wishes I was there at Culloden, if only for a moment for the Bonnie Prince. The MacLean loyalty is well shown in the song "Come O'er the Stream Charlie". The only reason the MacLean name is so widespread is due to the persecution by the English royalty, the same royalty that slaughtered the MacDonalds of Glencoe. The House of
Orange-Nassau has much to answer for.
The McDonalds were slaughtered at Glencoe by the Campbell's led by the Duke of Argyll, not the English royals.
No you don't wish you were there. Warfare back then was horrific too.
Watch the film "Culloden" from 1964. While the history in it is outdated, its portrayal of 18th century warfare is authentic and shows the horror and brutality of that type of warfare. There is no glory, nothing good whatsoever. Just death and fear.
Typical American who thinks he is Scottish.

@Calvin L.
You're right this is the Jacobite rising, I'm sorry.
You're a choice of the word "royalist" makes no sense here. If you are referring to the Civil War, the Jacobite are the successors to the Royalist cause, not Roundhead.
What is your research for finding surviving Scottish songs? What does the title mean: Who (will) be king but Charlie? or was this a wish for Charlie to be king? How do you interpret the title? Please explain.
It's an assertion, a rhetorical question. His grandfather was chased off the throne by his treacherous daughter and her cousin whom she'd married. This was as a result of the birth of his son who was later, by right, King James VIII of Scotland & III of England once his father left this world. The Bonnie Prince sought to reclaim his father's throne from their distant German cousins (who had taken it after both his aunts died childless), after whom he would become King Charles III.

Who wrote this?
I don't know.
This ballad was submitted by the Lady Nairne (Carolina Oliphant) to a chap collecting traditional Scottish poems, but it's widely believed she secretly wrote it herself without even her husband (who held rank in the British military) ever knowing.
