It’s so funny how we always think of germany as the one who suffered most after WW1. But if you look at Hungary, The ottomans and Austria, so so so much more was taken from them. It truly is ironic that two Powers who have hated each other, died together on the same side.

It was literally a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" decision. It was obvious that imperialist powers would invade the ottomans and make it either an colony or a mandate. Ottomans didn't want any of this so they picked the side of central powers. There are more reasons why ottomans joined the central powers but this is one of the important reasons.

Hey, great video as always but just a little detail.
The rivalry in the Empire about which side to join was quite nuanced but the main rivalry was between Enver Pasa (Pasa is a title roughly meaning general/admiral or a civilian administrator of certain rank) the Minister of War and Cemal Pasa the Minister of the Navy. Enver had, as you mentioned been the attaché in Berlin and Cemal was pro French. On top of this, while it is well known the Ottoman army was mainly modernized by German methods and advisors, it is less widely known that the Ottoman Navy had a similar relationship with Great Britain. This of course influenced their views on which side to take. Even the military branches weren't monolithic, some army officers were also French trained. This is all before getting into the civilian administration and the Grand Vizier, and other Ministers.
Keep up the good work

It's also his name in the west. Much like Isma'il Pasha, Gordon Pasha etc.
Yes, Surnames were not required in the Ottoman Empire back then, so he was just Enver with the title pasha.
@@BountyFlamor He had two given names. His full name was Ismail Enver. The other famous pashas of the time also had two given names (Mustafa Kemal, Mehmed Talât, Ahmed Cemâl and various others).
The sound effects are what always get me, from.the glass breaks to the simple thuds
1.03 Love how hes holding a DC 15 from Star Wars
Love Central powers so much from Yemen 🇾🇪♥️🇩🇪🇧🇬🇹🇷🇦🇹🇭🇺♥️
At 1914 Ottoman Empire looked kinda SUS, for the allies.
even before the war, european powers had agreements on how to partition ottoman empire. if they stayed neutral during the ww1 britain, france, russia would eventually gang up on the ottoman empire later anyways, so they decided that at least germany and austria-hungary would be their ally if they joined ww1.
Cannot stop watching your videos 😅
Thank You, I was able to get 95 % of your outline, I was a History Major at ASU in Boone N.C. in 1980
Ottomans: if we’re gonna collapse may as well do it in one final blow out.
"Nothing but net" on that comment!! LOL.
Baller move to be honest
1:14 "(...) the risks for the empire were much schlimmer."
German tongue intensifies 😂
Kind of makes you wonder what the timeline might have looked like if the Ottomans had decided not to side with Germany and Austria. While it's no guarantee that the Entente would have helped the Ottomans in any way (far from it), if anything it would have meant that the Arab Revolt would not have had direct support from the British. And for better or worse, THAT would have changed a few things in that timeline.
Greece might very well have joined the Central Powers as a result, since the government was deeply divided on which side, if any, to support. It would have been interesting to see the Greeks and Bulgarians squabble over any attacks on Constantinople.

I love your videos! They are both fun and informative. Great content.
Magestic quality of content delivery as always !
Ottoman: I never thought I would die fighting side by side with a hapsburg.
Austria: What about side by side with a friend?
Ottoman: Aye germany is here.
A friend that blackmails using migrants ? Lmao
"Why do Monaco exist" will be a very interesting video idea
to be a richer yet much smaller version of france
*HAYIR*
Easily my favorite video.
Questions we don’t ask but get the answer, nice :) love the videos
Nice video as always
Fun fact: Ottomans gave a tiny piece of land to Bulgaria as a “gift” to improve the alliance with them during the war.
Napoleon style
Why didn't James Bissonette join the Central Powers?
Because then Central Powers would win because of unlimited military budget.
James Bissonette doesn't join world powers; world powers join James Bissonette.
It’d be cool to see an alternate history where the ottomans joined the entente.
The late Ottoman genocides probably wouldn’t have happened, then.
You make great videos who are efficient and short, thank you and keep going this please.
Not a historical decision that I have ever thought about. Thanks for your explanation. No easy decisions.
Germany: Hey old man! Wanna join a sinking ship that's our alliance?
Ottoman: Sure why not?
@@elmascapo6588 You could say that Germany had a good 5-6 good opportunities to win the war within 1914-1916. 1917 they were drained by the year of battles & went on the defensive
@Абдульзефир at least we died together brother 🇩🇪❤️🇹🇷❤️🇦🇹
The last time i was this early, ottoman empire was a thing
A nice big section of Efraim and Inari Karsh's book, "Empires of the Sand", cover this topic in great detail. If you're interested in this part of history, I'd recommend reading it!
LoooL this is insanely well made
