After learning how to play this song ( You Need Me, I Don't Need You ) with my loop pedal I was interested to see how Ed uses his custom Loop Pedal
( Chewie II ) to play it, as it's a one-of-a-kind loop station I thought some people might be interested to have a view of exactly what he does on it.
Anyone who is interested in this may also be interested in this video, which is a short demo of the pedal, with the technician that's responsible for it: • Ed Sheeran "Divide" To...

Whether you like his music or not, this cat is incredibly talented and unique in his own right. He certainly gets my respect
To be able to hit every part perfect first time, consistently, on time, and flawlessly is fucking incredible. Anyone thinking other wise try a loop pedal yourself see what happens...
I have wanted to watch this kind of a breakdown for 5-6 years. Thank you so much for making this
You’re welcome m8, I actually made this in March just for my own enjoyment and research, then later thought I might as well share it just for the few people that might be interested in it, turns out a lot more people enjoyed it than I thought would
I wish I could remember or find it on here again. This sort of documentary/biography was long, I think an hour and a half & several years old. At any rate, Ed was in the yearly concert in Glastonbury and started playing Shape of You. A girl was talking at this point about the loop pedal Ed uses. She goes into detail about the way it works and how he uses it. The actual concert audience, watching and waiting sort of began to think Ed was lip syncing, mind you he hadn’t started singing yet, he was putting the song together, so to speak. He did 3 or 4 things with the pedal and then he went to the keyboard and played that iconic beginning to Shape of You. The crowd went nuts! He actually produced the song, live, in concert and included the audience in the recording. So much talent in this guys pinky finger. There is the live video of the song on here but if you could find this long version I’m talking about it’s so much better.
This was both smooth AF for a live looping and really impressive commitment to a live performance when a lot of artists would have just had prerecorded backing tracks play
his sense of timing is superb
The goat of looping
You have no ideia how me ( as a musicist and crazy ed fan) wanted for YEARS for some breakdown like this, thank you soooo much you are AWESOME!! great video i loved it!
WOW! Thank you for the loop pedal breakdown. I couldn’t take my eyes off it! 👍. And that was a lesson in loop pedal mastery. Ed is so smooth with his loop pedal, he makes it look so easy, and we all know it isn’t. Such an incredibly talented musician! I can watch him work that Chewie loop pedal for days and not be bored. The fact he does EVERY show from scratch and loops each song live is absolutely amazing.
Congratulations, you have made it to my recommended
Not a fan of Ed really, but this is hands down the smoothest live looping I've ever seen
What kind of music you like ? Who are you fan off ? Can you tell me which song you like the most ?
@@picchipakodi Yeah okay. We all know you are a snob who knows a lot of live looping, congratulations! You are better than me, a superior being and we don't deserve you in this world! Sorry for annoying you oh mighty music sage!
@@matale66 hey sorry, that was not my intention to ask this question. I apologize if it came across like that. I was genuinely intrested in music that people like who are not fans of Ed. I really wanted to know coz I want to also know about who people like and what interests them.
Nikhil Thashu as someone who’s not a fan of Ed, though continuously impressed by his looping skills, and the interesting fact that he’s pretty much the only successful artist using the live looping format.
I like a lot of hard rock QOTSA, RB, DFA
Some math rock like Polyphia and Ichikoro
A couple of dream pop bands
The Weeknd and Post Malone would be the pop artists I probably enjoy the most.
I just generally find Ed’s music to be uninteresting and unrelatable to myself, it’s not bad, it’s just not for me
@@Viper-dz2kw Thanks for letting me know. I'll listen to them as well
Definitely, you should continue doing this for all that we play with the loop pedal. Well done!!!
This is f incredibile. Complete musician, Pure talent.
This video is so helpful for learning his loops
This is fantastic. A peek behind the curtain so to speak!
Hell yeah! Awesome, thanks for making!
Very cool of you to upload this for us! Thanks! Ed is amazing. My fav musician.
I absolutely cannot listen to this man's over-produced released music, it makes my skin crawl. However this is so impressive and his commitment to doing this live is inspiring! What a performer
Could not agree more on everything you said. He is amazing at what he does but most of his songs are terrible. I am so impressed with what he does. I can watch live all day bit for some reason I just can't listen so many of his songs streaming.
Amazing video
es verdad aunq me solprende verte aqui xd
its Ed who is amazing
So the first Chewie Monsta was like 4 RC-30 plugged together back to back and this one looks clean and built like a tank, i wouldn't be surprised if they released something for the public.
Thank god I’m not the only one that understands exactly how he controls the looper in the right order etc. Alot of people buying or making the midi looper use the track 1-4 pedals as an individual rec/play instead of how it’s used by ed as a “select/mute track” pedal
Pure talent, skill, genius and commitment, not mention the passion. This only works if you have all of this. And, of course, time. He must have to practice the crap out of this.❤
There is NO one like Ed in th industry right now. I don't care for very many of his songs. He's not that great of a singer and is super hard to understand. But, he is pure genius.
Brody, this is amazing! I would love it if you could do this too for his Tenerife Sea Live version that has some looping in it.
Awesome work bud, how did you end up figuring this out? Just lots of UA-cam videos? :p
Initially learning to play the song with my own loop pedal, and then playing close attention to what he does with his
Hey Brody, do you know why he names the third track RC20? Guitar, Boom, and Vox all make sense to me, but I can’t figure out why he names track 3 after an older loop pedal.
Hey, he names the third one after the RC20 because that loop station had no distinction between the microphone input and the guitar input (they would both be recorded together no matter what) but the other channels isolate either guitar or microphone, hence the name RC-20, it functions like the pedal does
@@brodyoliverbassett7579 Ahhh, that makes sense! Thanks for the reply. I wouldn’t have figured that out on my own, but now I get it.
Cool video man! You should defo do more songs for ed like bloodstream.
I’m going to, I’ve been pondering doing Don’t but Bloodstream would be way better, I’ll start tomorrow if I can find a good video of it. ACL did a great job of getting coverage of the pedal, something most organisers don’t even attempt
ua-cam.com/video/bl4gIDkQx8w/v-deo.html There you go
@@brodyoliverbassett7579 thank you man!
0:32 is there a reason he pressed the GUITAR pedal before switching modes? It didn't look like he recorded anything
I don't believe so, he definitely doesn't record anything. He might have wanted to change to RC20 as that is the next channel he'd eventually record into,. But Ed is very efficient with his pedal, so I expect he either mistakenly thought that was the next channel he'd use or accidentally pressed it instead of the mode button
Ohhh my god, thank you for this!
When I seen the music sleep better I told myself one of these days I'm going to get one no matter what because I love music
This is an amazing video.
What a brilliant idea thankyou. I hope you do more like this. What does the rc20 button do?
Rc20 is the only channel that takes input from the mic and guitar, “Guitar” is just the guitar as you’d expect, “Boom” is just the guitar, but specifically for percussion (And I presume some EQ to enhance the bass of it), rc20 is what I described, and Vox are just vocal loops
@@brodyoliverbassett7579 brilliant! Thankyou :)
thank you so much for the effort.
Thank you so much for this !
Raphael Guillot you’re welcome, I had good fun making it
Please make more videos like this please🥺

i lived 3 years without knowing this video exists, lol, now it will be wven easier to copy chewie
Thx à lot!
People just disliked this video to make this look real
thx for video
Duuude thanks for the video. Always wondered what the MODE switch does and it finally makes sense. Do you use a standalone loop pedal like RC-30 or do you pump your loops into Mobius with MIDI controller?
I’ve been using the RC-30 since December, with an FS5U to change tracks, and really pushing it to its limits, (constantly using both tracks and the Undo-Redo function to get another track) but I’m tempted to build a custom midi controller and start using Mobius, especially after seeing what Ed can do with his
@@brodyoliverbassett7579 Yeah, only 2 tracks is a big limitation. I just bought a Behringer FCB1010 to use as a Mobius controller. If it works well I might build a custom box for it to change the layout of pedals to be a bit more looping friendly.
@@eldronado I mean, I’m managing with the two (technically three) tracks, but it takes a lot of planning, and can easily go very wrong xD
Hey Marcin, what does the Mode switch do?
@@marcusmartin-human It switches between record mode (red LEDs) and play mode (green LEDs). In record mode pressing any of 4 track switches chooses a track that's being recorded and in play mode pressing switches will mute/unmute a particular track.
Okay. So when record button is onn and there is ref light on certain button, the audio is recording in that channel and it will loop. When the red light is shifted to other button, the previous track will keep on playing and the new channel will record something too. Then what is the meaning of green light here?
Ed’s loop pedal has two modes “record mode” in which pressing any of the four pedal will select that track to record into, and the active track is indicated with the red LED.
It also has “playback mode” in which by default every channel has a green LED, and each channel can be muted individually, the green LED is turned off when the channel is muted.
At 5:10 you can see him unmuting two channels, and if you listen you’ll be able to notice that change too
That's a big big pedal
can you do a cover of this song? if you had a boss rc 300 you could re create this
'Watch how I step on the track without a loop pedal'
That's a lie Edward
Do I need a four tracks loop pedal for this?
Depends on how closely you want to follow it, the same effect can be achieved with an RC30
I work with the guy that built it
Does he use a metronome in the ear?
I don’t believe so, as the tempo that he plays the song at changes a lot
@@brodyoliverbassett7579 Besides it's really hard to sync them unless the looper does it for you via MIDI
No metronome hes a well trained, he has a perfect timing ( zero mistake )😀
@@denbagustv1219 nobody’s perfect, everyone messes up sometimes, even Ed ua-cam.com/video/gZkN4tveOG8/v-deo.html
Thats right, i mean if play with loop pedal perfect timing is a must
bruh!!!
Да-а куда мир катится ?
He could’ve tuned his guitar 😂
0:35 🤮
As great as he is, he could improve his live performances if he A) used a larger body guitar, and B) tuned the damned thing. He's really ripping into these small-body guitars and overdriving them, which results in a boxy, toyish and dead tone. I'm surprised nobody has turned him on to using a Maton. They have an outstanding live sound with a piezo amp and an internal mic. They do great with the percussive stuff too.
So this guy just copies Jason Mraz... but with an English accent
except for this guy doing it way before your other guy...you got a link to your other guy?
@@rainerbloedsinn430 ummmm no. Jason Mraz has been around since the 90s.
