  • In 2021 I returned to a little lake in the Cascade Mountains with hopes to recreate a photograph I made in 2016, every year I return to this lake, and every year I find a different image, this is a story of discovery, this is landscape photography.

Great images over the years David! Sometimes it's not the destination, but the journey that yields the best treasures!

Definitely some very lovely images of the area. That is why it pays to keep coming back at different times.

Thank you Erich, even though I will probably not get a chance to improve my original photo with better conditions or better camera equipment, I will continue to return to this lake for new nature photography possibilities, because the best image could still be yet to come :) thanks for checking out this video, it's one of my favorites that I've made over the years.

I do more ‘off the cuff, street stuff’, so I’m in complete awe of the landscape, contemplative types who ‘pre visualize’ and go after their mind picture. Great stuff!

Thank you Vincent, I did off the cuff photography for 25 years as a photojournalist, I'm now enjoying a more contemplative type of photography, it's a nice change of pace :)

Thank you, I don’t think I can say I’ve got it figured out but that’s what keeps it interesting, there’s always something new that I can learn and do different. :)

Lesson learned for me! Don't plan a nature shot! React! I'd neve bother with LF! Ever! I quit my Linhof 50" years ago. Nice video.

I think because I worked as a photojournalist for 25 years it was hard for me to do photography in a way that didn't allow me to react in a way I'd done for so many years so I finally had to set the LF camera aside. It was smart of you to know your strength as a photographer, some of use are slower learners. Lol I'm much happier now reacting to what's in front of me, it's what I do best.

I feel your challenge, as I always say,:" what you see today might not be there tomorrow ". I can spend days on or at a preserved crime scene, but one always feels like you missed something. What would work the best is if one can spend a few seasons at a precise location, no warranty of success. For this location a drone might save you some heavy hauling, or hauling of the right equipment for the day. As for myself and in my country this type of outing has a 90%+ chance of one becoming a victim of serious crime, regardless of the value of your gear.

Yikes! Sorry to hear it's so dangerous where your are, I don't think I'd head out for photos of it was! Where I'm at I rarely see another person and when I do, my dog let's me know they are nearby so all is good.

I admire your patience and perseverance, but it seems like an impossible dream. You have got as much chance of recreating a memorable cloud formation on a different day. But if it means anything at all, I think your 2018 lake effort was a better image than the original. However, what matters more is that it is a beautiful location and you and your dog love it to bits. There is even more joy to be found there, which is reason enough to return again.

I love the one with the lake and grass in the foreground, contrasty trees in the midground separated by fog, and finally the less contrasty trees in the background. That‘s huge! IMHO it‘s even better than the one you are chasing. I‘ve got a picture in my mind, too. That one happened 8 years, ago, and I haven‘t had a camera at my side. Since then I am chasing this picture every year, or should I rather say this picture is chasing me?

Thanks Ken, well I wouldn’t feel right about changing the landscape to fit my photography needs, I hold out a bit of hope that nature will move some sediment around and make things how they used to be over time, I haven’t visited the lake for quite awhile so maybe I will get back there in the spring to see if things have changed any, fingers crossed maybe there is still some hope. I will report back on this subject to share what I’ve found in a few months.

I've taken some B&W images with my D800, which always delivers. So I'm not surprised at your D810 quality but then it's the photographer not the camera.
The time line creates the story in your case here 📷👍

100% with you. I’m thinking in black and white since art classes at school. Always preferred to do ink drawings instead of colour paintings. Do you use a monochrome converted camera or turn it into black and white in post?

    • @seeingmonochrome
      @seeingmonochrome  6 місяців тому +1

I do black and white a couple ways, when I'm using a digital camera most of the time I'm converting a RAW file to BW and the rest of the time I'm using black and white film in a variety of formats. I still find BW film to produce excellent results when I'm willing to put the time and effort into using it. :)

@@seeingmonochrome Thanks! I still have a ton of red, orange, yellow, green-yellow and blue filters at home. But I've become too lazy to develop film myself, scan it, etc. etc. I'm thinking of doing something stupid and purchase a M11 Monochrom
