Turntables with wireless Bluetooth really gets me! First, you’re taking sweet analog sound and converting it to digital. Then, the digital is converted to lossy because of bandwidth restrictions. Ick!!!
Guilty as charged. Does anyone want my SoundBurger?
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog I was gonna say, there's more to life than bit rates. We spent the 60s listening to cheap transistor radios and we liked it. Compared to those days Bluetooth is nothing short of wonderful. I love my JBL Charge 4
I agree with this statement, but I can see the argument for BT in turntables. It could be useful in some setups, perhaps in a secondary system where one needs to use headphones and the TT cannot be right next to the listening position. Also, I've been thinking about getting something like the Sound Burger to test records while shopping and using it with BT headphones would just be the most convenient. I realize these are both niche cases, but I think they do exist.
@@kraig7777 good take! Our expectations have grown up with us!
My test for a speak stand's ability is that it has enough mass to not be tipped by the happy rear end of a 75 pound Labrador retriever.
Now, that's a unique situation! You're excused!
Audio gear without vu meters. Tubes with led lights under them.
1. Subs without a High Level inputs directly from the amp LFE's are ok for movies. 2. Book shelf speakers in a book shelf 3. sound bars in place of a stereo pair playing music. 4. I agree in ceiling speakers are a joke
Bookshelf speakers in a book shelf is brilliant!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalogWell TY TY TY also I was at the show on SAT i guess you and Randy were there on FRI and you're right the JustAudio guy is awesome spent some time with him, FYI Im in Grapevine TX up near Randy.
Bruce Springsteen is definitely one of my icks. There, I said it.
C'mon, Man! Relax! It's just rock and roll! Who is your favorite?
I definitely agree on the tone controls, or lack of, and the placing plants on speakers.
Great minds think alike!
12 Band Equalizers with All Set to Flat , and they are hooked up into the System

Peace of mind, guess!
1980 Heresy HBR's with plant water rings! I lugged those things from continent to continent. I got married and divorced a couple times. No major injury to my babies. Wife number 3 puts a plant on it and over waters it. Then melts a candle on it!!!
What do you call that act?
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog Speakercide and or looking for wife #4?
My HiFi ick: people who get all their music on Bluetooth speakers or ear buds.
That's 93.3% of everyone I know!
If you are that person, might as well buy high quality ones...
The ick for me is a room full of stacked up speakers on top each other, and wishing you a safe trip and enjoy the concert to the fullest.
Noted! Thanks, John!!! Appreciate the support!
You nailed most of the icks that I can think of...... love this concept. Keep on truckin' with these theme episodes. Your DJ chops really come through. Super entertaining!
Appreciate the support! This was fun one to conceive and execute! Some of my friends will be angry!😢
Hello. Great video , you hit a home run with all those IKS and can relate to all of them. Can’t wait for more. Keep the good work.
Thank you so much!
"Have you ever heard of The Band?!" "What band?" "THE BAND!!" "You said that! WHAT BAND?!"
Who's on first?
RIP Levon & Robbie
Smaller graphic equalizers with center frequencies that do not correspond to anything musical. Okay, great, I can crank up the 330 Hz to fill my speakers with MUD or drop it to make it HOLLOW. What good does THAT do me? Honestly, I'll just pay the extra money for more bands than I need. Or better yet, give me a pair of parametric EQ's and I'll just dial it in, myself.
Good take! Just give me something so I at least have the illusion of making it better!
I have tone control on my vintage Rotel amp but there is a fierce hum when i loop it in. Gotta love that, i sure do.
when you see a person wearing a band shirt that you know has no idea about the band
Are you actually accusing me of not knowing The Band! Sir.. I demand satisfaction!
For starters you need to learn how to pronounce his name
I work with kids. One was wearing a Slipknot T-shirt the other day. I couldn’t tell you a thing about the band, but I casually asked her “so, who’s the new drummer”? Upping my street-cred tremendously!
@@davidkclayton Lah-vahn! Did you know him?

Oh! Oh!, Oh! I haven't even finished the video, but Kef Kitty Speakers/scratching posts. My fortune is made!
Also, how come no-one mentioned stereo speakers stuck next to each other in a corner with the rest of the system on the other side of the room
Also I seem to remember Darko conclusively proving plants improve imaging and tonality, though it depends on the dimensions of the leaves.
Darko would know! He knows everything!
KEF Blades 1 or 2 would work. $2000 up charge. Reminds me of an ick, expensive speaker stands that integrate with the speakers but not included
Darko had a good April Fools with the plants, coming up
Cords everywhere or industrial hifi racks in a common living space. If it’s in a common space, it should be tidy and look like or blend into the furniture. Love the shirt by the way. His last two albums was some of his best work in my opinion. What a way to go.
Love it!! Definitely keep these coming!
* components stacked on each other
* speakers shoved against the wall
* paper record sleeves
No stacking at all???? I don't do it, but where's the limit!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog Haha! I mean…if done well and or purposefully, a double-stack *may* be acceptable. But three? Never!
Reminds me of the Monty Python skit - The Royal Society For Putting Things On Top Of Other Things
When my wife stacks stuff on my turntable like there’s already not enough scratches on it !! 😢😢
Ugggh!
Yikes! Bad wifey!
Components, including a turntable and speakers on one long shelf..
Hey!!!!!
funny stuff! how about friends who love music but only use iphone earbuds
You know my friends?
Stand mount speakers with MSRP of $500+ not on stands, placed permanently on random crap (like a metal filing cabinet or a laundry basket) at different heights. Ick! Get it together man!
Finding mistreated records in general is a big ick (no inner sleeves, paper sleeves, placed so they’ll fall out of the sleeve, etc) but here’s an extreme example: Found some records in my inlaws’ house purchased from Alexander’s (NY department store) back in the day. Alexander’s apparently used to STAPLE record outer sleeves probably to prevent opening them in the store. Whoemever orignally bought these records pulled the sleeves open but never bothered to remove the remains of the staple, which over time left not just scratches but GOUGES out of the records. I wanted to cry.
This was great!
Thanks for watching!!!
Great episode!
Thanks mucho!
Best video yet. Brilliant 😂
I smell a mini-series!!!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog My ex mother in law used to put my father in law’s speakers behind the couch so they were “out of the way” 😆
@@markfurlonger9356 Well, THAT will prevent unwanted room reflections!!!
I loved my high end ceiling surround speakers.
Yeah... but mains?
Great vid. I liked ick a lot 😄
Ick was my pleasure, Sir!
This was a great video!!!! I love your idea of sharing HiFi icks 💜 Some of my icks hehe: down firing subwoofers, desktop computer speakers with about one watt of output, non-removable speaker grills, those push button speaker terminals on both speakers and the backs of amps, (never thought about it) but I have to agree with you on the circular VU meters. It really looks wanky and cheap. And finally, generally speaking, I get the icks with anything that mixes a nice textured surface (black for example) with some kind of that wood simulated veneer. Make it one way or the other. Mixing them doesn't work for me.
I put glass tops on my Cornwalls. I agree with the no tone control. Gotta have them. Use them much on the Fortes?
No, but I want the confidence of having them!
Here's an "ick" for ya...!!! People coming over to visit and casually screwing around with the dials on my stereo equipment...!!! Even when they haven't the slightest clue as to what they're messing around with...!!! Hands off...!!! If you have a specific request, I'd be more than happy to accomodate you...!!!
Going to Vegas to see The Boss! You lucky bugger. I'm jelly like a donut Bob so enjoy my friend cuz we ALL want to hear about it when you get back.
My "ick" in hi-fi is when people will literally wipe their finger across the stylus making that loud fingerprint noise. GAAAAHHH! Stop that! LOL
EDIT: I absolutely LOVE the shirt dude. Levon would have laughed seeing people wear his name. Arkansas modesty.
Bought it straight from his estate... no shame! Love The Band! RIP to them all? Is Garth still alive?
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog My mom was speaking to he and Robbie before she passed away last May and with Robbie passing last year as well I'm assuming Garth is the last.
My mom worked for an entertainment lawyer in the 60s and 70s and I was actually in the studio at Big Pink as a little tyke and one of my oldest memories is the song The Weight being sung acapela for my parents and some other folks when we were in New York when I was about 4 years old in 1970. Levon playing a cardboard box and a wine bottle for percussion.I also apparently met Dylan but don't remember that part. Got to meet Ronnie Hawkins too thru my mom and his stories of the days of The Hawks backing him were pretty hilarious. They used to come thru Sarnia all the time in the 60s and Rick Danko was from Petrolia a little town outside Sarnia and some of his family are still there.
Love the videos Bob, thanks for the memory surge.
@@WireHedd Wow! That's a cool early memory to have!
Spring holders for speaker cables
Why is this a thing? Universally wives all hate speakers mine included. Great video! Took 20 years to sneek it all back in the house again. 😅

Gracias, Amigo!
I guess you wouldn't like my Cambridge Audio CXA81. No time controls. But it does sound good.
Audio Kicks: Listening to vinyl via Bluetooth
Cool tee shirt Bro!
Thanks! Some commenter accused me of band appropriation because I didn't pronounce Levon's name correctly. But he never hung out with Robbie Robertson at a Hollywood party... I did!
But the plants on top of the speakers help with acoustics. Bonus absorption if you use the Rafflesia arnoldii. Next to your speakers.
Did you learn that from Darko?
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog lol no idea. I was being sarcastic.
Lol!! I'm guilty of #3. No tone controls, but I love how it sounds. Like a good chef, who needs salt and pepper at the table if it's already perfectly seasoned.
I see it a lot in high end circles...amplifiers on the floor. That's my ick.
I’ve always liked the saying, “don’t ick someone’s yum”. Man, does that resonate in the hifi world.

There's got to be a market for audiophile heat and humidity dissipation layers such as cup rests and plant protection supports 🙃
You would think!!!!
Check with Randy (CAM), Sith Audio may have some releasing soon.
Everyone in the airport or mall who are “wearing” AirPod max or AirPods as a sign of “I’m into music”…
On Bruce Springsteen and aging singers. I hope he puts on a great show for you, Bob. We saw Lyle Lovett last year. According to Google he was 65 at the time. I am sorry to say his voice was totally gone, impotent. It actually hurt my ears to listen to his voice cut in and out like a too distant radio station. Yeah, yeah, "Lyle Lovett never had a good voice!" Not to everyone's liking, for sure, but I always loved his unique tone and large band western sound.
Oh no, I've not only let you down, I've clearly let myself down by having kind-of ceiling speakers, and I want forgiveness. I'm not in Essex, I'm now in Montolieu, near Carcassonne in France (you can add that to your map, Bob), and I have some FANTASTIC Grundig Audiorama speakers here that hang FROM the ceiling and are omni-directional. I've had them 40 years and they sound great, so I'm actually quite proud of my ick. My biggest hifi ick is when my darling wife prefers her small Hey Google speaker and says she can't tell the difference. Ick!
You must be a mind reader. I agree with all of your icks. I have seen speakers, antique radios and fine furniture with planter rings. Offenders should be punished. The circular VU meters remind me of the crappy communications gear I worked on in the Navy back in the 70s. You used similar looking meters to read different voltages.
Thank you for your service! And the watch!
That sounds so awesome. Enjoy your trip and concert. Travel safely. I must just ask you when you were spying on me and my HIFI audio 'icks'. Round VU rule, long before rectangular. 😂 In-ceiling speakers work when ceilings are not acoustically true when reflecting Atmos speakers. No tone control, get a graphic equalizer and adapt to your hearts content, with flashing lights or bouncing bars. What's not to love? 😂😂😂 I don't have or have ever used speaker stands, so no comment. 😂😂😂 . No display OLED screens on equipment is a big 'ick'. 😂😂😂 Sonic obscuring tropical jungles are only useful for ambiance inclusion when watching Apocalypse Now or Tropic Thunder. 😂😂😂😂
Hysterical! Thanks for meeting me half way, Simon!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog you're most welcome, Sir. You brighten my days.
I’ve had a riveting time😂 with The Icks!
And I can appreciate CDs digital, historical preservation of cherished music at the end of the day. But I’m mainly a phono, and cassette fan at heart. I’m also a huge fan of terrestrial,
a n a l o g
FM! Not one, but two experiences of Full-Modulation FM quieting scared the BeJesus out of me, body-slamming me to those floors! The first one in 1979 from a Fisher RS-1080 (a TOTL receiver THAT HAD Dolby FM!) The second encounter came 15 years later in 1994 at Texas audio dealership via a Linn Kremlin FM tuner from Glasgow, Scotland. 🏴
The blackest backgrounds known to man, that were ‘Silent Hill’ creepy!
And no audio shows I’ve seen lately have displayed any….. My thinking is, surely an arrangement of some type can be made to temporarily 2X4, and nail something on the roof, so that a top floor suite can pull-in a 96 to 100% peg on the meter.
Anyway that’s my small Ick! you’ve been great, keep up the posts!
Any time someone mentions 'wife acceptance factor' or mentions partner approval, I simply tune them out. They are not serious about doing what's necessary to achieve the sound they want and are open to compromises. Not having money or practical means is one thing. Not having the balls to do it is a non starter.
I'm guessing you're not married, Bob. 😂
My 6 CV D9s have following on top: 2 have plants, 2 lamps, 2 katanas in stands, and my guitar pics and slides. Yes i am married.
ICK #1 --> Integrated amps and Home Theater Receivers with no Pre-outs! ICK#2 I have an amazing Pre-amp (Tone controls on the remote: Bass and Treble) It also has a A Sub out and a high pass filter for the pre-out(and a full range pre-out). --> it has a Subwoofer volume control on the remote -> Every Pre-amp and Integrated that doesn't have a subwoofer volume control on the remote and a high pass pre-out is a huge ICK!!!!!! which is probably 92% of them.
Oh here’s another one: speakers that have to be pulled out 3+ feet from the wall to sound good. Who has that kind of space, and whose spouse is going to tolerate speakers in the middle of the damn room?
KlH model 5 designed to be used closer to front wall, increases mid bass punch love them
Configuering a subwoofer
I have videos on that particular frustration! Can't help you, I'm afraid! Thanks!

I do not consider these an ick but more in line with pet peeves. Mine would be when my bride is done playing a CD, she just pulls it out of the player set its data side down on the rack and does not put it back into its jewel case or protective sleeve. When it is a Mo-Fi or Analog production reissue, this carelessness becomes particularly painful, especially on overpriced out of print titles.
I hope she's still a keeper!!!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog Let us just say it is a good thing she is cute. So, I do not have it in me to stay irritated for long.
Get a Bluesound node for her.
No touchy the discs!
My wife can't even turn on my system, let alone decipher how to play a cd!
@@carlitomelon4610 Been there, done that. What a waste. The streamer never got used. Too many steps to deal with, all she is willing to handle is to turn on the receiver, the player, throw a disk in, and hit play. Need for correct speaker placement
Bob, you are right on the money! I’m with you. Especially yellow round VU meters! I cannot stand them. All of them need to go! Very entertaining video. Btw, “Rock of Ages”, great live album by “The Band”. To me, better than “The Last Waltz”.

We've seen Bruce three times and he never disappoints. Enjoy!
I will! I hope he's back to full strength!!! Thanks for watching!
Bookshelf speakers on stands lol. Might as well buy a tower speaker, takes up the same space. Bookshelf speakers on bookshelf, sure, makes sense. No big deal lol. I have bookshelf speakers and set them on things for that area.
OK, I know some high-end equipment weighs a lot, however I can not stand seeing equipment sitting on the floor in front of the rest of the gear.
Customs fees for buying stuff from abroad
That does suck! Thanks for watching!
Sorry I like my ceiling speakers in the bathroom.....which is the only setup of my 8 systems that way😛

Digital VU Meters, too. ICK!
Yet another great video! I do hope this goes viral. How about another Saturday HiFi Fun Club? I love that idea too. Add some FunFi in there for some tongue twisting fun. In regards to "ick" you do have to be careful not to get into "get off my lawn" factor stuff - we are grumpy old men to begin with, so it is a slippery slope. I agree with @philbert9117, bluetooth on a turntable is like putting cheeze wiz on a pizza made in Napoli.
My ick is when I see center channels inside of TV stands! Come on people, you are greatly harming the sound of your system doing that!
Hell YES! That's a great one!

Don’t agree with all the “icks” but loved the video! Love the “cat tower” comment.
How many cat towers do you have... and what did not resonate with you?
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog no cat towers, but I know some of those people. Round VU meters don’t bother me, but prefer rectangular. I have a new system developing as we speak. Wife doesn’t know yet lol. For those with plants on top issues, just get funky B&W or Maggie’s. Problem solved 😂
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog your “icks” don’t bother me, to be perfectly clear. Loved the vid though. Happy to watch more

My ick is people in the hobby just casually say they spent 10k on a pre amp like it is nothing when most of will never be able to spend that on one component. And also when good speakers are lavished with over priced finishes that jack the heck out of the price, i just want good sound not a piece of modern art.
Ick? I remember being driven out of the room by about 60 seconds of apogee speakers (?2’ tall) decades ago.
Those Black foam acoustic panels ! Depressing!
Chincy amps makers impractical spacing of speaker connections requiring ridiculous approach paths for the wires..
AND speaker terminals not accepting real banana plugs (the fat kind prevalent in the 70’s.. wtf)
Speakers so large they take up nearly the width of the room save the rack. Which brings me to: a tall rack has no bidness being 'twixt the speakers anywho. Lol.
The struggle is real!
Thank God I don't have golden ears, I'm so stupid I can listen to MP3 and like it.
Amp without a tape monitor.
Isn't that every modern amp?
Bob, you can take checked bag and just leave it there. Come back after the show and pick it up!
Thanks! Hotel, you mean?
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog No, check a bag when you fly out, but go back to the airport and pick it up after the concert.
My most disliked icks.
When Pastor Patrick forgets to remove a heavy power amp that he stores on the floor of the confessional, and you stub your toe on it, in the darkness, when you close the door. Never wear sandals to confession. The people in the back pews do have plenty of decibels now though, during the organ parts of the Mass.
When the salesman at the high end audio store that I never buy anything from, stares at me while he plays ONE track from the cd I brought in and then on track 2 starts running a loud vacuumn cleaner which not only is louder than the music but near deafening.
The other audio store where I haven't bought anything at yet either, when as soon as I walk in, they say "Sir we're about to close now." Even if it's 10:30 in the morning.
When you blow on your diamond needle to get the dust off, and instead of just air coming out of your mouth, particles of food stuck in your teeth come spraying out too.
When neighbors have the reverse and opposite priority, when they see you outside "How's the loud stereo doing?" And how's the family?
People who are determined to convince others that costly cables are snake oil. Never having owned a pair themselves.
UA-cam audio reviewers that say they're giving out big prizes in contests to reach their subscription goal, and then never say who won, or anyone ever giving thanks in the comment section. They keep the prizes; most likely. Sometimes they're careless and you can see the so called "prizes" in the background of a later video.
Those snakes that stare at you from your TV screen, and then start uncoiling and saying "We're coming for you"."We're coming for you no." "We're coming to get you Keith!" Oh wait, that was a late night comedy skit about Keith Richard.
When you've tipped a few while listening, and all of a sudden you can swear that Three Dog Night is the best. and only rock band ever.
When it sounds like you're all of a sudden playing some album by a girl singer, and then realize your turntable inadvertantly switched from 33 and 1/3... to 78 again.
When you blow a speaker wire and all of a sudden you can clearly hear the voices of your neighbors complaining about the loud music.
When you've achieved absolutely perfect sound quality and instead of being thrilled, you have a deep realization that there's nothing beyond this, to look forward to.
When the DIY Amp kit you ordered from China says on the box "Easy Assembly." "Only 4,748 parts." "Have Nice Day."
Atmos for music.
I have a separate Atmos setup. Sometimes it's fun for music, sometimes it's a hot mess!
The cheap leather-skin on earphones peeling off, even if you don't exploit them 🙁🙁😠😠
Going thru that now with my ATH-50x. Wrapped with that stretch tape athletes put on their muscles! So far, so good!
Personally, as I've moved away from home theater the in-ceiling/in-wall speakers make more sense all the time. Other than my left and right mains I'd prefer to have the surrounds hidden. Of course I'd want my beautiful Cornwalls on display but I generally look at surrounds like popped collars on a polo shirt...." really?" Another big ICK is folks who insist that $10K interconnects are worth it. I get and have bought upgraded wires over junk but I've been told directly by two separate owners of high-end stores that after a point they're just a tax on vanity. And "gatekeepers" suck ass. The dudes who hammer on newbies because the didn't come out of the womb big fans of that group's core brand of components. "If you don't know what Paul Klipsch's farts smelled like you're just a poser!" Or the guys on the DIY sites that condescend to anyone trying something for the first time or winging it. Those basement dwellers won't give the time of day other than derision to anyone who isn't an engineer or worked in tech for 4 decades. I love that guys like Devon Turnbull upset these self-appointed keepers of the flame.
The worst thing of all is bad bass, like from cheap home theater from the box store, in cars etc. I would rather less bass than bad bass.
The fact the 90% of speaker stands are FUGLY. In NYC most of us can’t have a dedicated listening room, so the living room has to do double duty. I don’t want some metal industrial looking shit in there since I care about my home looking nice. Give me options.. give me nice wood stained in walnut to match vintage speakers, or white wind to match the room. I see a few people selling nice ones on Etsy now but I had to resort to using wood children’s stools for my Dynaco a25’s.
That's why i stick with YAMAHA products.... for years now.
Rectangular meters... right on!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog I don't have as many videos as you....but I've got...Some...maybe you've seen one or two....lol...!
