📚 Description: I wasn't really all that excited about the release of this new signature telecaster when I first read about all the new 2021 Fender models, but thankfully someone sponsored this review via my NGD program to help me open my eyes at just how cool this tele is!
Chrissie has had many hit songs such as Brass in Pocket and Back on the Chain Gang - I remember hearing her songs all the time growing up!
While this might not look at spectacular in stock photos - the Ice Blue Metallic finish is quite nice in person and the scratched up pickguard is actually a feature that made me like it since it fights against fingerprints! You also get a Deputy Marshal Badge and white strap in the case. Locking tuners and specially wound pickups are icing on the cake. It might be a bit pricey at $1400 new... but at least it comes with a case!

Are the pearloid dots on this Tele a little larger than normal?
Great Review, Thank You
What is the little route under the pick guard?
@@ceffortbailey Yeah, I wondered that, too. I thought maybe there was going to be a 3rd pickup.
What's the deal with that hole that is drilled in the body under the pickgaurd..?
@@IrisGalaxis "is"
Hahaha.. Thanks for that..
At least I got a response..
Many people buy their first Telecaster because of someone like Keith Richards, or Springsteen... maybe Prince. I got mine in 1999 because I saw Chrissie play one... it sounded killer... and looked bad-ass on her.
I bought my first telecaster in December I’ve always wanted one since I saw George Harrison playing the rosewood one on the roof top of the apple building
She is one bad ass rockin roll mama for sure, through and through, I wasn't a fan until Back on the Chain Gang, then I got it. guess I'm a bit slow
I got a Telecaster copy beacause the pixies
@@KALVIN123 what colour? I’ve got a sunburst classic vibe 60s custom
I got my tele because of Chris Cornell.
The bridge plate is shiny above the pickup and rough below it because Leo Fender was an extremely cost efficient man. Because those bridge plates had the cover, and it only reached the upper side of the pickup, leaving the plate exposed at the top. Leo instructed the people at the factory to only polish the top part, it was what could be seen. That saved a few dollars in the long run.
I was gonna say the same thing! Great fun fact
That Tele is gonna be the Talk of the Town.
shUT
Well done
I have had mine for about 20 months now. Mine was perfect out of the box, literally number 22 of the run. No fret or neck issues. And it plays and sounds beautiful. Couldnt be happier with mine
The Pretenders rock.the blue finish is kinda cool.nice dark fretboard
I literally spend all day watching your videos, found you your channel, you have sparked a interest in guitar in me beyond just playing them, thank you for all the hard work you do!
Love the Pretenders
3 review & demos in a row?? It's like old school Troglys channel! Don't burn yourself out tho man!
He’s said he’s got a backlog of reviews to get out, so he might have a ton that just need editing and he’s not filming like a madman. (Or maybe he’s doing both.)
Chrissy the rock legend! I'm glad to see Fender has honored her with a signature model. Chrissy is a significant figure in Rock history blazing a path for future generations who pick up a Tele.
Chrissy is a kick a$$ writer and player....and her biography is a good read. Tough as nails, a strong work ethic, and never one to fall back on excuses, or look for a free ride.
Trogly, I am surprised you weren't familiar with her....she's an Ohio native....from Akron. She even wrote a song about it "My City Was Gone".
And 'Downtown (Akron)' from 1990's 'Packed' album.
Did you notice the end view of the fretboard? It's a slab board, accurate to a '65. Later Fenders used a thinner piece of wood which followed the curve of the fretboard. To collectors of vintage Fenders, this is important. Kudos to Fender for (A) doing a Chryssie model and (B) getting a detail like this right.
The bidge plate thing I remember somone saying is actually a Fender thing. Leo never polished the insides because he thought the ashtray cover would cover it anyway and people wont take it off. Then fender just did it as historic thing.
i took my kids to a bday bowling party today that had an anime theme, thanks to your recent anime sig model reviews i had something to talk about. thanks
Great review Trogly. I do like the guitar and I loved your homage to Chrissy Hynde and the Pretenders!
The Pretenders are still together and going strong
It’s a really nice-looking guitar, and I always love the contrast of a dark fretboard and a lighter body. Sounds great, too! Chrissy is a genuine rock legend so it’s absolutely appropriate she gets a signature Tele. Good for her!
That guitar sounds FANTASTIC
James Honeyman-Scott was a really great guitar player. Very creative,
Pete Fardon as well
Both underrated guitarists of their day!!
And Robbie McIntosh. Not a bad guy to recruit after the tragedy of Honeyman-Scott and Farndon.
Yeah, his 3 solos on Tattood Love Boys are superb!
I like the guitar, and i like her and her music. Nice.
Oooooh, I'm such a sucker for Ice Blue Metallic! Swap that three way out for a four way with series/parallel wiring, and I'd never put that thing down.
Roadworn / aged guitars are the bane of the industry, Change my mind.
It’s likely Fender just started using a formula of nitrocellulose lacquer with less plasticizers. It could be a heat differential treatment, either would need to be confirmed.
Those are good sounding pickups. That’s what stood out the most to me.
great sounding little guitar there
Yeah, those pickups are very nice.
Tattooed love boys, talk of the town, space invader. All great early pretenders classics. I like the look.
I had discovered not long ago that also Grace Jones' 'Private Life' is originally a Pretenders song! 🙂
Ohio girl who made it big!! Surprised you didn't mention that!
Wow thanks for reviewing this one Had no idea that it even existed . I think it looks fantastic and I agree with you the sound is killer . This ought to be a good seller for fender . Super sweet axe
The picture of the fretboard before conditioning made my skin crawl
The kind of sound that makes you want to keep it 💯
I did exactly that - not particularly a Chrissie Hynde fan but played it in a shop and loved it. Looks great and got a great price on it - I swapped out the scratch plate for a white one and that also looks great
Great review as usual!!
This is the first artist series Fender that I've seen with stock locking tuners.
Hey, Fender, keep it up!
(I pretty much refuse to buy any new electric guitar without locking tuners)
that tele is epic and ch is a legend song writer
Wow, look at that glow at 2:45... This Tele is angelic 😇
I am glad you mentioned the frets being scratchy. I had that same issue with the HER strat. The fret material that they are putting on the newer mexicans seems to be too soft. Older mex made guitars don't seem to suffer from this.
Not a super huge fan of the understated look, but that thing sounds amazing! The distorted tones sounded more like Jimmy Page than the Jimmy Page tele. A little more compressed, but I could def hear some Led Zep 1 & 2 tones coming through! The low notes sounded so thick and heavy! Pretenders are not nearly as popular as they should be. First two records are great. Also learn how to play “Middle Of The Road” for some finger twisting string skipping, and try to nail the slight crescendos that happen in the riff. & the solo is money. Bonus points if you learn the harmonica solo on guitar like it did! Great video and keep up the great work!
Have you heard the latest album? Smoking
You showed your age when you didn't recognize the name Chrissie Hynde... youngin'
How do you spell the sound she makes before the guitar solo in middle-of-the-road?
burrrrrrrr rerrrrrrrr
he's from ohio too!
Right, lol ! I was in love with Chrissie when I was a teenager - guitar beginner..
@strangeuniverse1 You don't remember her name because you're 63😉
If you eat and breathe music like I do, you would know the name Immediately and never forget it. Hell you could just say the name Chrissy. People like me know who that is. Legend, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Don't tell me you don't know who Keith Richards is but you only know of The Rolling Stones
I love it when my soldering jobs look better than the stuff coming out of the factories these days. Especially the routing of the wires. After 15 years I'm getting better!
That guitar sounds killer!
This model looks a whole lot closer to the one I thought they were going to build in Chrissy's honour. The finish on hers was a metallic green, but this otherwise takes it.
It isn't just much about whether the person being recognised can play like Eric Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughan. It is about name recognition, and people know her name and theirs.
One of the mire ironic moments I have committed to memory was going into a pub in May 2016 and hearing "10,000 Miles" on the jukebox. Hearing a Christmas song in May is supposed to be awkward, but it wasn't. I blame that on Chrissy.
Chrissie Hynde is AWESOME!
Very nice looking guitar! Love the blue with the metal pick guard.
Every Telly commands my attention.
Chrissie Hynde is the coolest
That Telecaster is ridiculous
I just bought a tidepool Mexican tele the other day Absolutely Love that guitar
That guitar sounds fantastic! What kind of od/dist and amp are you using?
Outstanding tele.
Chrissie Hynde is another person I'm proud to say hails from Akron Ohio !
That teles tone is the quintessential telecaster tone.
Middle of the Road ! Ohio hero from Akron
She was also present at that disastrous Kent state anti-war demonstration and watched the 4 students go down. That's what motivated her to fly to London.
Ooo yes, middle of the road, great song ! The moment when she says: one...two...three...: that guitar sound, geeee..
One of the best sounding guitars you have demoed. Is that even a word???
Never mind the guitar. Chrissie is special. Attitude that screams rock n roll. Blossomed in England. She's one of ours now x
I’m glad that a pioneering woman of rock n roll got a signature guitar. And I’m also happy about the price point! Pretenders rock \m/
My step dad restored a 66 mustang many years ago and I bought a squire Tele w/ mirror pickguard and painted it with the color of the car. It looked very much like this...
Chrissie was on the TV show ‘Friends’ playing at Central Perk. Worried and defensive, open mike regular Phoebe asks her, “So, how many chords do you know?”
To which, Ms Hynde coolly replies, “All of ‘em.”
That's a big 'ol thumbs up for the Dethklok reference!
Chrissie Hynde sang Smelly Cat with Phoebe on Friends
Dont hold that against her 😅
Looking forward to the Brent Mason sig model!
Long overdue...great job fender
This tele is defenently vining with me. Love the 60s style neck (those dot inlays 👏) and the tones sound great. Would sound perfect with some nice reverb for the cleans.
Always like it when you look at a telecaster
Strat switch tip on a tele is the way to go, in my opinion. Combine that with an angled switch control plate, it becomes much much easier to use than the traditional horizontal switch with a barrel switch tip. As far as the texture on the bridge plate, I think this is a pretty standard feature....at least most of the ones I've seen have this.
Mostly all Telecaster bridge plates have the partial shiny, partial rough parts like that. One website thought maybe because Fender didn't want to waste time polishing the part of the bridge plate that you couldn't see much under the ashtray cover.
My respect for Chrissie Hynde not just as a musician, but as a person went up this past summer. Rush Limbaugh uses The Pretenders music (My City Was Gone), and when asked why she allows it to be used, she said, that despite her's and Limbaugh's vst difference in political beliefs she did it to honor her dad, who was huge RL fan.
Color on the website definitely appears darker to me than the one you’re showing. Very cool!
When I get some brass in pocket, I’m gonna get one. 😊
Nice looking Tele.love Chrissy and the pretenders.
That Strat switch tip is a great solution to the Tele 5-Way
Usually I'm not a fan of "signature" models but this one is just a drop dead gorgeous guitar! The metallic pick-guard and ice blue paint look incredible together...but I'd never, ever pay that much for a MIM strat.
It's about Time!
It was Chrissy Hynde, not Nancy Spungen who gave Sid Vicious his iconic lock and dog chain necklace.
They almost had a "green card" marriage so she could stay in England!!
Didnt dee dee sport that sartorial accessory initially?
@@spadger9122 yeah, probably. Those Limeys pretty much stole everything they knew from the New York Dolls, Ramones, Richard Hell, Johnny Thunders.....etc.
@@spadger9122 I think I remember something like that, but I was thinking one of the Stooges....but I might just be associating with "I Wanna Be Your Dog."
@@christophervaldez8746 Yup. Too bad Sid had a criminal record that wouldn't allow it.
there's been a finish breakthrough in the last 5 years or so that's been really "hush hush" about how it's made. it's a modified formula in the nitro that checks as it cures and can be tweaked to make for some seriously authentic/realistic checking. this means not knives or cold air is needed. i know this because of a brief conversation that i've had with one of the guys a Pre-War Guitar Company in NC, (i have one of their gorgeous guitars), but they wouldn't say anything about the finish other than it had something to do with the formula. :D
Her pickups in her guitar just maybe from the fifties as Fender always assembled their 60s guitars with 50s components; perfect case in point: the pickups and volume tone pots of Stevie Ray Vaughan's '63 Strat, previously owned by Christopher Cross, are from 1959 while the neck's from 1962. As much as I love Telecasters, that would definitely be rocked by me but not for $1400!
Love the Pretenders 👍
That thing sounded great.
That’s special!!
this is a pretty cool tele
I was always hoping Gibson would make a sig for her with the white SG Jr she used to play in the pretenders
Man Austin, we need to get you to 200k subscribers!
It’s about time Fender made a CH signature Telecaster, CH is the reason I own a Telecaster .
She's awesome
Shows what Fender can do at a good price. Sounds fantastic!! LOADS OF BITE!!
I like that this isn't so heavily "relic'd" that it looks like it was dragged along behind a bus for fifty miles. While I normally don't bother with those or signatures, just for the overall look I'd actually consider this one. It's nice looking just on its own.
I always dug the Pretenders’ guitar tones (CH’s or otherwise) and also dug the look of her Telecaster and the fact that she stuck with the same axe for all these years. I’d love if Fender made a player version of this guitar (sans relic-ing, just the tones, color and metal pickguard) for a bit less $. I’d buy one today.
BBC has a video of Chrissie playing live in 2014. THE GUITAR AND STRAP BOTH MATCH!!!!
I like the tuners with older look and newer tech
Enjoy the show, Mr. T. Speaking of Fender artist series guitars from Mexico, have you had any requests to put the Kurt Cobain Jaguar through it paces?
Quite cool they put locking tuners on it; Apparently Chrissie's original one doesn't actually have those! 🙂
I love your show, how would I get one of these, love this guitar !!!
Do you think I would be able to buy that exact pickguard [new or worn in]from Fender .?It only has holes top and bottom corners which is perfect because the holes halfway up are in a dif place on my Jet JT350 from the regular Fender model. There are no holes halfway up on this one so cant be wrong.
Seen Chrissie & Pretenders open for Iggy in Chicago in the 80's - T Style Love!!
This tele would have been absolutely perfect with body binding and a traditional pickguard!
Not sure if it’s your style, but the Britt Daniel (from the Austin, TX band Spoon) Thinline tele is a custom gold color with black top binding (cutaways on the back if I’m not mistaken), and I think it has broadcaster or nocaster pickups in it.
Very cool 😎.. pretenders and all, good to hear you play ▶️
A mint guard would look perfect....( save the metal one)
Agreed, the blue color is perfect.
I saw The Pretenders open for The Rolling Stones they were a great live band
Interesting that this one has 2 different serial numbers, 1 on the neck plate and 1 on the headstock. Mine and all the ones I've seen pictures of online don't have a serial number on the headstock, only on the neck plate.
What's the name of the dethklok riff? Pretty cool
Tele bridges were only polished on one side of the pickup because the other side would be hidden by the “ashtray” bridge cover. That’s on all vintage style Tele bridges.
I don’t know if I got lucky but I got one of these for 1200 and people don’t forget it comes with a fender hard case which is worth 200 bucks alone and mine has hardly any relic marks on it at all . It’s one hell of a tele plus a slab rosewood board.
You interested in the new Nancy Wilson epiphone nighthawk? It’s got a 5 way and 25.5 scale length
Are you got do a review of the ibanez lb1 telecaster
Does this come with a case? Sweetwater and all other sites say it comes with gig bag??
