Dance the night away was my introduction to Van Halen I always felt was written to kind of go along with the disco movement that was going on at the time.
you are shredding my man thank you this video inspired me to pick up the electric again been playing a lot of acoustic, but this riff along with a lot of other van halen famous riffs gave me the itch for electric again. thank you 🙏 again
Being a drummer and a guitar player growing up on VH its hard to pick a fav tune but I gotta say Dance the nite away even though it doesn't have the signature Ed solo is my all time fav as it makes my soul feel good and those harmonies are killer, one of the best things about VH too is they had it all, kick ass punch but also could even mkae your girlfriend happy as it was danceable, I have calculated I have listened to this lp at least 4300 times 2x's a week for 42 yrs
Great job, especially on the very last part you covered, so many tutorials use a short decending pattern there, i dont know what they're hearing but you nailed it, thanks.
I read an interview with Eddie where he said his original arrangement was a more rocking version but the rest of the band pushed for a poppier latin flavored arrangement. I would love to have heard that version. I've always thought that Unchained was his heavier rewrite of DTNA and he wrote it in dropped d for an exclamation point.
I literally heard this song a few days ago on the radio and thought: "this riff sounds fun I should learn it". And then your tutorial pops up today in my feed. Great timing KDA!
Thanks for slowing down and clarifying that B and Csharp section that had me confused --lot like Panama where Eddie plays on the chords arpeggios --appreciate !
I know this video is old but could you discuss your setup? You mentioned that the guitar is tuned half step down but what about your amp, its settings and any other pedals added (any overdrive, distortion, etc added?) Well done sir. As close to the original that Ive ever heard in a cover.
Hello Flynn.. From what I've come to understand, Ed used a MXR "Phase 90" (script model), and MXR Flanger, occasionally a very short "Mili-second" delay and a wah-wah pedal for many songs over the years. Ed would not usually leave his phaser or flanger on for a long period of time. It would be switched on and off at selective moments. You will hear this "on-off" technique on many songs. Unchained is a later song that employees this on-off approach. *This is a great comprehensive break down of Eddies sound and techniques from my guitar teacher from years ago. @@PawnShopRockers Right, I knew that but I’ve heard mixed thoughts on Eddie using the phase 90 on Dance the night away. Nobody can officially confirm it but if you listen, especially during the tappy solo, you can hear something is going on there.
Excellent, Excellent, Teacher. Very easy to understand. Amazing! Thank you 🙏 Please don’t stop.
I have to say that your version of the pre-chorus is the best tutorial I’ve seen. Sounds spot on to my ears.

You are a GREAT TEACHER. All others are convoluted & confusing. Thank you 🙏 Fantastic clarity!
Best tutorial I've ever seen on this riff, you even have the muting and timing down, great job.

I never could get it to sound quite right. I was missing the muting of the D string on the 7th fret. Absolutely a game changer! Thanks man!

First VH song I ever heard on Don Kirshners Rock Concert. Was instantly hooked.
You have become my favorite go to UA-cam guitar lesson teacher. Great job on this one, helps me for sure 😎
Definitely a song to listen to while driving with the top down on a sunny day.
Great riff! My local classic rock station plays this song alot in Knoxville, Tennessee. One of my favorite VH songs. Great job!
Not sure how I missed this Kelly but this is first class breakdown 👍 Always impressed with your guitar instruction brother 😎
🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸5 guitars out of 5

Great demo and back story. You’re right, the 70’s/early 80’s were a great time for guitar driven rock n roll. Thanks for sharing!
What a fun lick. Thanks!
KDA...great stuff... I was gonna mention the tapped harmonics and then you did...hahaha....that is so awesome....great minds!!!!
You’ve nailed it. Thanks for the help!
Great information here !
GREAT job!
I've seen Van Halen multiple times and they always end with Dance the Night Away, to the always cheering crowd.
GENIUS!!!!!!
Guy reminds me of "Kyrano" the fictional character featured in the 1960s British Supermarionation television series "Thunderbirds".
Great vid and tutorial dude!
Now that's a perfect definition of a "hook"
Thank you!
Always love when your videos cover Van Halen, any chance you could show us Panama?

Use your pinky to make a complete E ( shaped as a D) and hit the low E.
Good lesson but at 10:51 the b power chord is incorrect
I always thought this song was inspired by the Archie's, sugar sugar, so many similarities but still so different
Did Eddie use a flanger on this song? I’ve been wondering this for a long time.

¿Ibánez RG470 o 570? Japan?
570 Japan. With a lot of modifications.
