I’ve been playing guitar for close to 38 years, growing up in the 80s everyone wanted to be Eddie that played guitar, he is part of the reason why I started playing and while I wanted to play Van Halen I followed a different path like Priest, Maiden... etc. But Eddies virtuosity has always been a favorite. Carl I have been a subscriber for a very long time of yours and whenever I’ve needed to learn a song you have been there, after Eddies death I realized I have never sat down and tried to learn any of his songs and I decided to learn “Dance the night away” ..... it reminds me of being a teenager, the dances and the parties of high school.... and low and behold you have a tutorial, I just wanted to thank you for all of your hard work for guitar players and your dedication, you were there for me again, Eddie will be sorely missed and even though this video was made before he died but I know you’ll do more but anyways Thank you for all you do .... RIP EVH...
Pretty much sums up my feelings as well. This has always been one of my favourite riffs - and while I was blown away by EVH's soloing, it was some of his melodic riffing that I really wanted to be able to replicate. I started playing guitar at age 9 and also grew up in the 80s - and eventually ended up getting stuck on the guitar playing of Leo Kottke (i.e. acoustic fingerstyle). But at age 51 I'm gonna learn one of my favourite EVH tunes for the first time (thanks to this video) and spend a while remembering what it was like when I was 14 and EVH was God.
Excellent lesson! Minute 13:00 is actually what I came here for in the first place, because that's the part I like the most of this beautiful song. This song distills happiness all along.
I recently discovered how hard this seemingly easy guitar riff is to play. Not surprised. It's EVH. The guy had incredible rhythm playing skills. So hard to copy. Thanks Carl, you saved me from losing my mind because I couldn't figure it out by ear.
Wow, a really nice, A+ lesson - you've done all the work that I never bothered to learn or work out - and this is a really cool song with sweet harmonics and fun techniques that I always intended to learn. Great job my friend!
I remember teaching myself this one, and I gotta say, I got pretty close. Always wanted to really learn this one and see if I was playing it right. I used the third and fifth fret trick Eddie does for his B-flat chord at the end.
Excellent lesson, as someone who bought Van Halen 2 on vinyl when it came out in 1979, this was always one of my favourite tracks, still is. Like everyone, I always wondered how he got those sounds, now I know.
@@whipsmartchris Hey, bud, you're wrong. This most certainly was on VH2, NOT their debut. Maybe don't try to argue with the old heads that were actually around to remember these things?
@@pianoman00712 All Apologies. Sadly, I was 16 when their debut hit. I am one of those old dudes who fucked up his facts. I’m glad we agree on the masterpiece that is “Dance The Night Away.” What a groove! It’s EVH’s stunning outlier in a number of ways and, not to be forgotten, made all the better by DLR’s evergreen, take you to a different place lyrics. I know the song is credited to all 4 members but those are Dave’s words!
Thank you Carl. I am having trouble with the tap harmonics. ..stuck on the tap harmonic section of Dreams also...Thanks for motivating me to work on tap harmonics again...Awesome video as usual.
Carl, glad you’re channel is back on UA-cam after the hacking incident! …If you enjoy Carl Brown’s videos as I do, Remember to help out Carl by clicking on Subscribe and also, give a Thumbs- up! I think he is great guitar teacher who keeps his lessons straight forward and easy for beginners as well as experienced players!
This is the best lesson on this song I've come across. Luckily I can use my effects processor to drop tune without having to physically retune for all of these Van Halen songs. Just create a patch that's detuned and I'm good to go! Any chance of getting a Little Guitars lesson? In any case, thanks so much for your channel, you're really helping me become a better guitarist. 😃
Thank you! didn't know it existed! after your comment i make a search and find the "The Drop Polyphonic Drop Tune Pedal by "Digitech" But it's expensive...
Hey Carl, I know you did this one a while ago. Thank you for giving this old guy here lessons the way I want to teach them. How about on The Hunt by Skynyrd? Thanks for the fun man!
I wonder how the creation process of this masterpiece was. It would have been very interesting if Eddie had recorded that moment. Would be awesome to watch.
@@colehunt7371 I recall him saying that he never used any distortion pedals. The tone was really just the amp with a variac which lowered the amp's voltage.
Great lesson, but for the live of me i cant get the harmonics to work. Do you need high output pick ups for this, of am i tapping this wrong? Is fully tapping the string to the fretboard of just making light contact?
I really like the tone of your guitar. Please tell me the type of bridge pickup. Seymour Duncan's DP182 FastTrack2, or DP189 Tone Zone S, or DP218 SUPER DISTORTION S, or DiMarzio?
Does the tapping require particularly high action? I play with extremely low action and I can't for the life of me get the tapping part of this song to ring.
When you look at the tabs for songs like this you get disheartened that you cant play it but then you turn on a tutorial video and realize the riff isnt that hard at all
Hey carl big fan of your lessons, any chance you could do some dio black sabbath? Everyone's has done the ozzy classics to death yet for some reason no one has done the dio stuff. If you could do stuff like neon knights, heaven and hell, children of the sea, die young, the mob rules, voodoo something like that would be great! :)
Hello Carl plz do a tutorial of 4 guitar lessons viz., 1. Yngwi Malmsteen's '' Black Star live version'' 2. Paul Gilbert's '' Flamingo '' 3. Camp Rock 2's '' What we came here for guitar solo '' 4. Demi Lovato's '' La la Land ''
Hey Carl I seen your lesson on classical gas by Mason Williams, but I was wondering if you could play Tommy Emmanuel's version. Don't worry, i'm not looking for a video lesson or anything, lol that'll be nearly impossible. I was just wondering if you CAN play it. And keep up the good work! :)
How do you get the tap harmonic note to last? When I do it the note only plays when I am holding my finger down on the right spot. If I tap it just plays the note if you were to play the string regularly.
Not to sound demeaning, but its not the gear, it's the person. I know this because I've seen some very good players use the crappiest gear and make it sound like heaven.
Carl, what pedals or effects are you using to emulate the EVH guitar sound on this track? It all starts from the sound, but I don't recall introductory comments noting what to use to recreate. I don't have any pedals and don't want to waste money if I am going to purchase.

"Dance The Night Away" always gave me a nostalgic feeling of being out Saturday nights on a party boat with a ton of chill people
the opening dissonance of this song is so epic. i always loved the first 10 seconds of that riff such a beautiful progression and tone.

never left a comment on UA-cam before just wanted to say I have learned a lot of songs by watching you seems to me there is no song you cannot play
Look up Tommy Emmanuel's version of classical gas, I actually just commented to ask if he can play it
Eddie Van Halen: the greatest guitarist and (the) most melodic heavy rock song of all time. Nice tutorial.

Been waiting forever to find the tapping part! Thank you
the harmonic interlude is brilliant, the guitar sounds like a calypso steel drum
I thought that was Van Halen's most melodic tunes.
And women in love
Carl you're the best guitar teacher on UA-cam. And how you you get your tone is still a mystery.
Phanindra axe fx ii
More Van Halen!
Edward was a mad scientist pure genius the way he approached everything was just outstanding and outrageous.
It's amazing how, as you break up the lesson , I can hear notes Eddie uses in his other songs. Just wow.. this helps out a lot..
His classical training has a tremendous influence on his music.
No wonder Carl nails all the EVH stuff, he's predisposed to getting the "Brown" sound :)
Yeah its crazy i don’t know what he uses because its one of the best brown sound attempts iv heard
Ha!
@@squash2127 pretty sure he uses a computer programmed amp
