    Urogenital Embryology
    Urogenital embryology encompasses the intricate development of the urinary and genital systems, derived primarily from the intermediate mesoderm. Initially, the nephrogenic cord forms, leading to the development of the pronephros, mesonephros, and metanephros. The metanephros ultimately becomes the definitive kidney. Concurrently, the genital system begins its development with the formation of the gonadal ridges, which differentiate into testes or ovaries depending on the presence of the SRY gene. The paramesonephric (Müllerian) ducts form the female reproductive tract, while the mesonephric (Wolffian) ducts contribute to the male reproductive system. Abnormalities in these processes can result in congenital anomalies such as renal agenesis, polycystic kidney disease, and disorders of sex development (DSD). Mastery of urogenital embryology is crucial for diagnosing and managing these congenital conditions, ensuring optimal patient care.
