Robert Miller I couldn't agree with you more. This their "trippiest" song ever. Not this version, but the original album version. You can hear the crowd reacting to the inflatables during the breakdown. I saw this show in 1977 when I was 16.

If you listen clearly..... People are going nuts over the inflatables that were rising up from behind the stage, during the instrumental break, the "dragged down by the stone, stone, stone, stone.........." during "Dogs," at 8:14 on. They were amazing! They depicted the "nuclear family:" Fat Dad, Fat Mom, and the two gross fat kids....That is guitarist Snowy White playing with and backing up Dave Gilmore. It sounded like they slid into each other on stage. It was a great merge of guitar styles. Sadly, it was the first and last time that I saw Pink Floyd on stage. I had seen Led Zeppelin 2 months earlier at the same venue in Cincinnati. 1977 was a good year for a 16 year old kid like myself. I got to see my 2 favorite bands just months apart, along with many others!

Seriously, as stoned as I was from smoking pot and tripping on a hit of Microdot from a lab at the University of Kentucky, I can still clearly remember those moments. I had turned to my girlfriend at the time and screamed "WTF!!". They also inflated and flew a pig across the coliseum during "Pigs (3 Different Ones)." It's eyes lit up and they floated it from one side of the building to the other and back. This tour was all about inflatables and a very big, very glittery spinning wheel behind Nick Mason that projected a million points of light on the round screen and across the crowd during "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", as well as hundreds of slides and films on the round screen. Notice Roger Waters isn't singing the second verse after the break; something he does on the album. He only sings on the ending. Dunno' why........

I originally wrote some more, but deleted it. But now the message now means little. I fully respect backing musicians who do their part to create the atmosphere and create the stability needed for the lead musicians to have musical freedom on top of. Hail to the vital but less recognised musicians.

The lighting rig for this 1977 tour was also unique. There was no lighting truss across the stage. Instead, 2 "cherry-pickers" (cranes) lifted up from both sides of the stage. They contained the pars and spotlights. The "cherry pickers" would follow each band member on stage, moving above where they moved and change the lights for each cue for every song. It was strangely robotic, and no one had done it before, nor has anyone done it since, that I know of. The lighting techs "rode" these movable" pickers" across the stage, highlighting whoever was singing or soloing. Of course, the round screen was behind them the whole time, with the slides. When they got to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" the biggest mirror ball, EVER, rose up in front of the screen and the entire arena was moving in circles with incredibly bright pinpoints of light spiraling everywhere. To be honest, this was a stoner's delight! If your mind was not altered by something, it probably wouldn't have appealed to you. The mix of the visuals and the music was the whole point. You simply didn't attend a Pink Floyd concert without some kind of psychoactive substance in your brain, and you did not attend if you didn't expect the visual and sonic unusual experience! In other words, you had to be stoned to be there and appreciate it. (No surprise then.....duh).

      +james woody Was it Showco?

    • @jawoody9745
      @jawoody9745 8 років тому +2

DougZaga I don't think it was Showco. I believe it was Clair Bros. from England. That Dallas company was reknown for it's amazingly large, but clean trusses and numerous powerful par lights. Check out the stages for Genesis in 1976 through 1978 (1977, especially, when Showco used an argon laser shining down on Phil, and a helium-neon laser facing up). The Led Zeppelin tour of 1997 was all Showco! They used so many pars at the rear of the stage and deep, deep down each side that was really impressive! The entire stage glowed! I miss that kind of lighting. Everything now is small, compact and computer generated. Back then, Zeppelin especially, had guys manned on two spotlights riding high above and sitting on the flying trusses! They had to climb rope ladders to reach their spots and they both stayed there for 2 and a half hours each night. I think The Floyd's company was the British company Clair Bros., who eventually joined forces with the Dallas-based Showco. Showco has been defunct for years now, but they always put on the most impressive displays, including very intricate laser displays. I like those heavy trusses and rows upon rows of lights. I miss that kind of industrial feel to the lighting systems, now reduced to lightweight, computer controlled, Vari-Light type illuminations. The Animals tour was exceptional as their two lighting rigs, one for each side of the stage were manually controlled and two people had to ride on a cherry picker and manually change the lights for each band member who happened to be featured while soloing. The inflatables that rose from behind the stage were amazing!!!

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older
And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south
Hide your head in the sand,
    Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer
And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone
Dragged down by the stone (stone, stone, stone, stone, stone)
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everything's done under the sun
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone

His voice was amazing in 94...his best guitar playing was from 71-83 Supernatural Satanic Magic....sorry but there there's no other way to define it....his tone was supernaturally influenced..it is and was....doubt me ? there are ton of more technically proficient guitarists..but NO Eddie Vanhalen Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix Eric Clapton, Jimmie Page, Jeff Beck...had Gilmour's tone, when he was at his very best....no one in the world had his melodic sense...Satan moves fast. He moves into new things and keeps things fresh and when he can't invent, he reuses genres, looks, fashion, re circulates music and fashion....I'm sorry but the tone of the 70's literally cannot be recreated today with ANY technology.....it is lost in time, and captured in a few recordings. This is what influenced and transfixed people, so the Devil had a vested interest...he moved to disco, and then to the 80's...he ALwAYs Evolves, the deception is always fresh and darker and darker....Today mainstream radio pop music is his interest, almost all leading pop artists are openly in bed with Satan....Sorry and Sad, but True.

They played pigs on wing with an acoustic(at least roger did) so David is playing with his telecaster for solos but why isn't snowy playing acoustic guitar?

    • @Goldhand28

Snowy added some rhythm parts during the song and also had to play the 2nd guitar of the twin solos ;)

Why is Gilmour singing Waters' part?

    • @Goldhand28
      @Goldhand28 5 років тому +3

It was probably to share the vocals more equally during the Animals Set. Roger sang basically all the rest (Sheep, Pigs & Pigs on the Wing 1+2)
Also Dogs is mostly David's song except for the lyrics ;)

    • @odysseuscrocodilydae4391
      @odysseuscrocodilydae4391 4 роки тому +1

Probably that's because the tempo is faster comparing to the studio version and it was quite difficult to sing with right rhythm.

Roger couldn't get arsed. Plus, he always had problems trying not to sing out of tune.

Actually,I think that these set of songs;"Sheep","Dogs",&"Pigs" are
very bleak/dismal in their respective lyrics...,I think that Roger was entering
his "dark phase" that culminated in ,"The Wall",and the eventual 1st
breakup of the band.Don't get me wrong,I love Roger's music,I think if
he had more "Faith" his outlook on life as reflected in his music would
    brighten.
But the great inspired playing of Nick,Richard,& Dave! That's why I keep
    listening to this concert...,Wow!

he grew up without a father, killed in war to "save" pieces of shit like you, sacrificed to "save" scumbags like you that leave no actual legacy or change in the world... As far as I know, he has the right to be as dark and somber as he fucking wants it
