HR Giger is probably best known for his creature which was brought to life in the franchise of Alien films. But for almost 50 years Giger has been producing artwork and has established himself as one of the word's best Fantastic Realism artists.
Born in 1940 in Chur Switzerland he know resides in Zurich Switzerland. But JustSayGo's television host and travel journalist Ron Stern caught up with Giger at his bar in Gruyeres Switzerland. The artist is not known for giving many interviews, especially on camera, which is what makes the exclusive interview so special.
Ron was also able to talk to Giger's wife Carmen Maria Giger who mentions having a poster of Giger's work when she was 17 but had no idea who the artist was.
He is an artist that has had a career most artists would envy. Early in his career he set himself apart by using a freehand airbrush technique to develop his own unique and now well known style.
In 1977 he published the book Necronomicon which is what was the visual inspiration for director Ridley Scott's film Alien. The director commissioned HR Giger to design the film's title character as well as the film's alien environment. These designs earned Giger an Oscar in 1980 for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
Giger's work also had an influence on rock n roll. His work graced the cover of many notable musicians such as Debbie Harry, Danzig, and Celtic Frost, just to name a few. His most well known though is probably Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's 1973 album Brain Salad Surgery. Sadly the original art work from that double cover was recently stolen and is still missing.
Today HR Giger's work can be found through out Europe. You can find more information about HR Giger, his work, and where it is currently on display at his website.
His voice is ideal 'creepy old man living in a castle'. Perfect.
I like how he calls his works his "babies". All too appropriate! Visiting his museum us on my bucket list...
I remember the very day in 1979 when I was a kid. Bored in an airport, our flight was delayed from Luton to Spain ( this was my first trip on a plane, so I was very excited). Then an announcement said our flight was delayed so to console me my father went and bought me a magazine. It was Omni, he bought it because he thought it had 'something to to with Star Wars' on the cover (I wasn't interested in Star Wars). So, utterly bored flicking through this magazine that really wasn't for kids... cigarette adverts and such, BOOM there was an image by Giger, a page from Necronomicon... I remember the thrill I got, literally a shiver, aroused, fascinated, and disturbed all at the same time... this was the day my imagination was struck by a bolt of lightning! Thank you 'Laker Airlines' and thank you H.R.Giger. 🏆🚀
R.I.P. Giger Truly one of the Davincis of our time. We will never forget you. His art and his legacy will never die!
you probably wouldn't understand, as it is beyond your scope of comprehension apparently.
+Christopher Harrison What an extremely narrow minded view. He also painted AND sculpted demon alien penises AND vaginas raping men AND women,
But seriously, without him we would not have had the word biomechanical and it's art movement. The grunge look of the 90's. Every science fiction and horror story since 1979 has been a direct descendant of his vision.
Of course the guy deletes his shit post..
yeah sjws don't belong anywere, specially here on real art territory.
We could call him the "Dark DaVinci" :-)
I love how he calls his paintings his babies.
RIP to a genius. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world.
God I love the smirk on his face the whole time, he is the king of smirking!
i fucking love this guy, each time i see an interview or something, i just want to hugh him so hardly!
he sounds so cute for an awesome old artist XD
Rest in Peace! One of the very very best artist ever! Huge inspiration! THank you!
Rest in peace.
i like how he described his own creation for alien: a little scary.
FFS A LITTLE, goddamnit giger i still regret i didn't met you.
Thank you, H.R. Giger. Thank you, so much.
A true "European" genius 😊🇪🇺
He appears to be so shy and goodhearted.. i wonder if he was indeed, such a kind person.
He was
@@matthijshannink
How do you know?
to share your art with the world, that is kind.
@@vardellsfolly5200 i met him a couple of times
@@matthijshannink Good for you, then!
Interviewer: "do they mostly come at night? Mostly?" Giger: " the fuck are you talking about?"
He calls his aliens his babies omg a true father indeed~
He's so cool. humble and absolutely essential to my life as an artist. i am shocked that he has no scripted bullshit, just like heres my work and there you go. love it. true artist.
Giger and Carmen, they're adorable.
Sure some might find giger bizzare but thats what makes him unique, just imagine what goes through his mind when creating masterpieces! Living legend !
You can tell he is sort of annoyed when people bring up Alien.
I would be too if someone kept asking about it like the interviewer did
Danke für dieses Vermächtnis, solche besonderen Menschen gibt es heute kaum noch! RIP
Great Interview. I love his artwork
I was on a school trip three weeks ago, walking around that town and just happened to find the HR Giger place, and thought "hey, this looks kool!" and went inside.
Things havnt been the same since. O.o
Love him
Never ask an artist what something means.
LOL, I love how humble Mr Giger is about his creation, the Alien - one of the most legendary creature design in history. "...a creature who looked a little scary, and um... yep.." XD
At the end the interviewer made a reference to "Aliens", which Mr Giger was NOT allowed to work on, (allegedly was a huge disappointment for him). It was awkward how Giger looked sideways and nodded at the reference.
Giger, you are the Man.
Your paintings (your babies) inspire me.
nice interview of such a lovely couple...Ein bezauberndes Paar.
Remember going to this museum when I was 7 (thanks dad). Didn't get frightened or anything. Now I'm a fan.
Miss you Giger, I wish I could've talked to you at least one time.
Im going to start refering to my artwork as my babies
Love Giger, he's great!
His artwork is priceless, wish they had a museum here.
Sweetest man with the most disturbing visions.
God fuckin bless hr giger. I'll continue getting tattoos of his artworks on my flesh.
absolutely ancillary and informative to have the master himself with his wife channeling their remarks to us, great is the one who uploaded this as well
He sounds like Cthullu would sound as human.
i was so fuckin bummed out today
may the Giger live on!
Total innovator. I don't know if this aesthetic or anything like it would have ever come close to existing.
Thank you for this! Will be going to the museum this August. Really looking forward to this.
Yes you must
it's amazing !
I went there and to see Giger's bar and museum in such a pretty town high in the mountains is beautiful and disturbing at the same time and exactly the reaction ,i'm sure ,Giger wants us to have
I hope you get the chance to go there :)
he is really great, love his work
I wish the Giger museum would do an exhibition in London. I went to the Giger museum this summer 2020. Amazing place
Hello
Thank you for your art, your work will go further than you think.
great interview
His wife is very pretty.
He is the master!
He's the Swiss Marlon Brando
I love how irritated he got when the interviewer pulled the line from Alien II and didn't realize that Giger's pained expression wasn't from of exhaustion of Alien film questions or use of lines form the films but the fact that he didn't know that James Cameron removed Giger form his creation in the sequel Cameron using his own alien designs and even worse altering Giger's original work.
Alien's yay lol I love those movies...such artwork here!
Great artist, love his dark, surrealistic style.
HR Giger dedicates time to his artwork...do you think he has time for TV? Nope, he creates!!! It's in his blood.
R.I.P. ;(
Amazing Art!
Way to quote a movie he didn't even work on, at the end.
It's funny when you realize the character of Guerillmo from Victor and Valentino is based on him!
very informative interview on his career.
It's one huge mindfuck to think what the hell happened to the Alien franchise after the second movie, when they had so much of Giger's work out there just to get inspired by.
i love it!!!
Er war ein Genie.
Just checking how good Matt Gourley's impression is.
Gran Maestro.
he had very special stuff like some jesus painting on the cross and alot weird things. very innovative but also not scared to push the boundaries and even shock some people. alot was inspired by death and evil and the good or bad when we see many of what he has done.
Very informative and interesting interview! Thank you very much ÜR the upload of videos like this!
Best regards

HRG was not the father of the film ALIEN, but the producers and director Ridley Scott decided to use some of his scetches and artworks and after receiving allowance they invited Giger to London, where he created the set for the space jockey, the alien ship, the eggs, the facehugger and the beast itself. Thanks for sharing this interview with us! Best regards from Austria
Hans Wurst Thx very much for the information! (was new for me)
A Genius Master!
I hope I can visit there someday!
Also, it's good to see that his wife got out of her whale bone cage.
The Kitchen?
this is my mentor. this man is the single most influential person artistically ever. that has any as well as very little affect on my over all learning's of me an my art. im self taught. the first payment I received for any art work I ever done was h.r.giger's necronomicon the book. it was my bible. noticed that if you where some what on the same level of thought as the master he taught you. Carmen is very beautiful I might add
R.I.P
very cool
My Hero!
GR8 GUY!!!
ese h.r giger es un genio con sus dibujos casi casi parecen pesadillas
RIP Giger
Also, the last question was so cringe-worthy...
Mr.Giger's wife look like Noomi Rapace from "Prometheus"
I'd love to go there.
MASTER OF MASTERS
Before this video, I didn't really know what his voice sounded like: I was surprised that he sounded exactly like I thought he would.
Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, Giger!!! Pure Genius.
simple answers to AMAZING creations !
Remembering Hans Ruedi "H.R." Giger born on February 5, 1940. He was a Swiss artist best known for his airbrushed images that blended human physiques with machines, an art style known as "bio-mechanical". Giger later abandoned airbrush for pastels, markers and ink. He was part of the special effects team that won an Academy Award for the visual design of Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror film Alien. His work is on permanent display at the H.R. Giger Museum in Gruyères, Switzerland. His style has been adapted to many forms of media, including album covers, furniture, and tattoos. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._R._Giger
MASTER!!!!!!
His wife is like 30 years younger XD that's awesome :D
I love how he doesn't try to give some elaborate pseudo explanation of his work.
Can someone tell me what this track at the beginning of the video is?
I love his accent
the Legend lives on the Silver screen !!
You translate the matter of gorizia sam peter nova gorica solkan for ??
8:22
Analytical look intro the artistic pattern on the sleeve of the coat. Artist eye.
I was at that bar. I shorted the bartender for a Guiness. there was no ATM up there!
Riiiiiiiibley scotch
Giger is a Master
Who’s here because of matt gourley?
His Flat in Zuroch was the most depressive place on earth, even the Gobi Desert would be funnier
She is wearing a FLOWER OF LIFE necklace!! Cool!! .... Smart woman!
Genius
Geeze, people only ever seem to want to know about the Alien. He's been asked so many times about it in past interviews that if you want to know something about it, you should just read an old interview. I would have so many different questions for him if I were the interviewer.
have i been pronouncing giger wrong? i thought it was giger as in (guy-gurr) not giger like (gee-gurr).
Giger's wife looks like Noomi Repace.
@chalupamonk "I was born dead... I am still, stillborn"
Damn!! he should have played a part in the movie.
Been there, i was in nirvana.
