Ah, yes, Rambo, the barely functional hermit that was so dejected from his time at Vietnam that he mowed down an entire battalion from his own country so he wouldn't have to go back.
Classic imperialist icon.
The modern Leftist can see no nuance, If he isnt a communist icon he must in some way be evil.
Never saw the movie.. looked like shit to be honest. I can't view the two replies for some reason...YT?
Well said.
@@bigblue2216 The first one is really good. The scene where he breaks down still hits hard. After that, it turned into classic 80s cheese. The most recent one follows that trend. And don’t get me wrong, that’s not a bad thing, it’s just not for everyone. Personally, I think it’s about time for Sly Stallone to hang up the spurs, so to speak. He’s getting a little too old to play an action hero.
@@bigblue2216 iirc the first movie is like an actual serious take on PTSD and how Vietnam Vets were treated. And then every subsequent movie afterwards was just a Commando/Cobra, Gun Em Down For ‘Merica movie. Still fun, but completely missing the point. But It’s been a while since I’ve watched all of them.
I do always wonder how many of these reviewers genuinely feel this way, and aren't just riding the gravy train, be it either to be accepted by their peers, or just to get free stuff and invited to premieres.
I think there was a story that Disney were blacklisting reviewers who gave previous movies bad scores from attending new press events/previews.
I think they're just soulless parrots to be honest. Nowadays you gotta give up your agency at the front door to be a journalist it seems.
TBH Larry, you and everybody else that was a part of 2008's grand online reviewer surge were basically a pop culture vanguard against serious, professional, and politicized reviews. I think that's why Lindsay Ellis came out recently to apologize for her treatment of Twilight back in the day because it fostered a certain type of anti-woke-establishment community that her ilk is desperately trying to destroy. You guys basically created the space for backlash against the norm to exist, but now that the norm is blind progressivism, a lot of the old guard are turning on their old fans.
Hell, Holyrood does it, why not Hollywood?

I love how instead of saying, "Left or Right," you said, "Left or non-Left," because that's pretty much how it is nowadays. Either you're with the Prog Left 100%, or you're evil
I guess I'm evil. Being smart is evil now.
@@funkyweapon1981 thinking for yourself and asking questions is evil now too.
Hell, look at J K Rowling; she's like 99% on board with their bullshit but seems to get more hate than most of the 'Right' does because of that 1% difference.
Did peoole forget that JK Rowling used to support PewDiePie getting cancelled because she bought into the SJW bs that he’s a nahtzee and a sexist? I also think she was against gamergate with that Graham Lineham twat. She’s just an SJW not into the pronoun cult. It’s similar to how tankies don’t get along with the woke, but they’re still both horrible groups of people.

"The obvious solution is to make a better movie."
Hollywood: "Ok how about we BAN user reviews?"
Remember the audience and critic ration for Cuties? That alone should let you know how garbage professional critics are.
Kung Pow is another great example with an absurdly high audience score and a critic score near 0, Kung Pow is technically a bad movie, but it's so damn quotable, besides my own mom I HAVE YET to find anyone who hates that movie!
Im sorry that your mom is a movie critic.

Oh God, I haven't seen that movie in forever.

I feel young watching that
It's mostly nostalgia but it's a good movie.

It has one of my favorite depictions of Goofy. Plus Eye to Eye is great.
When experts are consistently wrong, it's not wrong to distrust them
What you said is very wise, sadly I know a lot of ignorant unwise people who blindly trust experts no matter how wrong they are.
It's even entirely reasonable to assume the opposite of what they say is true.
They aren't "experts" then
They're subversive liars masking what true expertise is
At this point the word “expert” lost all of its meaning.
@@DocGadget11 Everyone's a bloody "expert" nowadays, which is just a way for the subversives to have more power as those who look up to authority so vehemently (like the lefties) can be more easily swayed and convinced by those in power.
"Listen to the experts" which just fucking means anyone who agrees with me
I bet soon Rotten Tomatoes will remove the Audience Score like UA-cam removed the Dislike Button with a weak excuse like "avoid Downvote Brigades and bots".

“The issue isn’t whether or not the vaccine works. The issue is whether or not you trust the various social institutions telling you that it works.”
Well said, SFO.
Covid-vaccine fence sitters are, in my observation, far more likely to base their ultimate decision to get the vaxx on anecdotes from their friends and family rather than giving a crap about what the experts have to say. Which is both a good thing (always be skeptical of any authority figure telling you to do anything) and a bad thing (sometimes the experts are correct and your friends and family are not).

@@emiljosefsson9149 "Mistrusting the science is not a issue about science"
People who think that Science is a unified front were every single person says the same thing has NEVER ACTUALLY BEEN INVOLVED IN SCIENCE.
Science is literally a nerd making a 128 page thesis on a subject, then another nerd comes along and argues something COMPLETELY OPPOSITE of what is proposed, then a third nerd comes up and starts yelling about the statistics being used and a fourth nerd proposes a similar thesis but with a slight variation.
All 4 of them then proceed to start slapping each other/flailing around ineptly for the next 10 years until a new person shows up with new information and evidence... then all 5 of them start slapping each other.
"How can Africa be real, if our eyes aren't real?"

I don't remember writing any of these comments, yet here they are
Every site who tries to cite Rotten Tomatoes requires both metrics of ratings to be used. So both the Jorno number and the audience number.
And that includes metacritic.
Sites like rotten tomatoes had a good start, but it was corrupted fast, once you become the one who 'is the voice' its just easy take bribes, even selling for a low as 6k for... well i cannot remember the movie ;) the whole idea of rotten tomatoes nowadays... (simple typo, bribe was bride, maybe if it was run by mormons?)
@@LevitatingCups Hence I did that little edit there at metacritic. So far, they haven't done as outlandish as Rotten Tomatoes, nor are they much on the spotlight enough for them to be too pressured.
Good.
IMDb is unironically better
@@theactualTVB That's why I haven't talked shit about them.
Actually, former editor in chief of Rotten Tomatoes Matt Atchity used to work for the Young Turks on their movie review channel called "What The Flick" for about seven years. I recall him giving the middle finger to Star Wars fan who called Rey a mary sue.
Wow what a mature thing for an adult to do. Especially when you consider the fact that Rey is the definition of what a Mary Sue is.
"Name a male Mary Sue!"
Me: "the protagonist from Undying Mercenaries. Easy."
Rey is such a mary sue that, if asked "What is Mary Sue?" you can just say "Rey in Disney Star Wars" and it's a 100% accurate description.
"I don't know if the show [batwoman] is actually good or not..."
_Mauler's personal hell screeching intensifies_
I've felt that sense of distrust in my own life and time on the internet recently.
How many times have you seen the phrase "Fact-Checkers claim" whenever some establishment site wants you to believe something?
At this point, "fact-checkers" could be synonymous with "The Party" or "The Propagandists" because of their obvious, brazen biases, and that's a bad thing.
These days we literally have a ministry of truth, so we're that much closer
Also keep in mind that Google only shows the critic RT rating in their preview card. So many people Google a movie and base it's worth on that quickly returned result.
Rotten tomatoes is a joke. IMDb is way more trust worthy
What's to fix about people not trusting institutions who aren't accountable? That's just good sense. You shouldn't trust people who face no consequences for being wrong. Trusting these institutions is what got us into this mess.
The fact that Moviebob contribute critic meter on rotten tomatoes tells me all I need to know about the quality of that metric.
I haven't thought about Movieblob in years...
Indeed
Is he still stalking Lindsay Ellis?
@@noless they deserve each other
The biggest flaw in their "disliking films staring non-white people" claim is that Blade and Friday both have better audience scores than critic scores.
You forgot, Axel Foley from Beverly Hills Cop from the 80s. That character was well written and one of the best roles Eddie Murphy ever had.
There’s a ton of movies and video games that people love that have non white and or female leads. They’re just not overtly political. Or if they are they do it in a nuanced way, not an attacking way. Which they hate. They want their ideology front and center, brow beating you for 2 hrs, or for the whole 6 hr play through.
Friday was awesome, though. You got knocked the fuck out!
@@agnesroman9326 That was great, too.
I know it's a bit of a tangent, but how in the world is Rambo a symbol of "imperialistic rage"? How is a character with Native American heritage who represents the abuse the US inflicts on its warriors supposed to be "imperialistic" in any way? That's like trying to say the character Blade (the African-American vampire hunter once portrayed by Wesley Snipes) represents slave owners going after escaped slaves.

I did not play EarthBound back in the day. I played it a few years ago, and while yes it had 'problems' it was an intensely memorable and interesting game. Save states and the ability to rewind helped immensely. Unforgiving, those old games. But EarthBound is a must-play.
I must be the only person who thought Earthbound was just ok lol.... It was a bit weird and trippy which kept it interesting and had some cool ideas but I never thought of it as being up there with the Squaresoft titles of the time. I mean, I played it when it first came out (and flopped) so I never felt like I missed out on a hidden gem (not 'til Mother 3 anyway), which is where I think a lot of the enthusiasm for the Mother franchise comes from these days. 🤷🏻♂️
I generally agree with the "be the change you want to see" aspect of your argument here. I personally don't agree with that alone, specifically regarding honesty, being a cure for leftist subversion, though. I agree with RGE, Razorfist, Arch, and Vee that we need to bring back gatekeeping. Shun the commies and the commie sympathizers on first sight so that they never get an opportunity to subvert anything you're a part of in the first place.
We need to bring gatekeeping back. And not just as audience, but as creators.
The Commies weasel their way in and then they gatekeep to keep non-Commies out.
If you have some institution of gatekeeping, how do you know the commies in question won't seize the gatekeeping institution in order to gatekeep the rest of us?

Remember that Rotten Tomatoes is the site that preferred Last Jedi over Spaceballs, gave negative reviews to Rat Race and Road to El Dorado and have given positive feedback (or at the very least, were just too nice) to obvious corporate bullcrap like Ghostbusters 2016, Oceans 8, Tomb Raider 2018, Batwoman, Cowboy Bebop 2021, The Owl House, etc.
I swear, talking ill of Doctor Who, especially older stuff is like summoning my mom to have a go at you for daring to talk negatively on one of her most favorite shows back in the day.
Agreed, it'd be like telling my mom the OG Star Trek series was never good.

"Pendulum swinging to the Far Right isnt the solution"
Pendulum swinging is the inevitable consequence of the Left's actions. Either it goes over the top and loops back around to Far Right first, or they lose grip, get crushed under the weight and it happens incrementally, the swing will happen.
It only depends on how far the Left continues to go up the ramp of the pendulum and whether or not they give up institutional power sooner rather then later.
Violence against tyrants is the duty of humanity. If they didnt want violence against them, they wouldnt commit or advocate for crimes against humanity on a daily basis.

"The truth will always reveal itself, but not necessarily before a lie has had the opportunity to destroy everything."
Point being: sticking to the truth can prevent lies from getting people killed.
I generally agree with you that the right MUST be materially different in kind if they are to win the culture war, but there are some pretty sound arguments in favor of that approach. Most notable in my mind is Tim Pool.
Although he's not advocating for becoming an anti-wokescold (that is, hating and cancelling anything that isn't anti-woke), he is making the point that if your only goal is to hold ground, you're going to lose. If all you're doing is holding ground, you'll lose every once in a while just by random chance. If you never seek to take that ground back, eventually you'll have nothing. The only way to win is to take money from people, places, and things that call themselves woke and give it to anti-woke or neutral things.
To him, that manifests as creating his own culture -- making movies, art, music, and misc entertainment that aren't woke. To others (such as myself, a consumer of these things), it means not buying woke products.
But honestly, it comes out to the same thing. The only difference is spewing bilious hatred at those with whom we're refusing to do business.
"Everyone lost their minds over it." when commenting on the Joker reviews... I see what ya did there.

Gaming magazines must be friends with game publishers, paper factories must be friends with lumber mills, and on and on.

I have never meat any right winger in real life who said we should be just as bad as left wingers. Accelerationism seems to be an online phenomenon and even then Im pretty sure its mostly Role playing.
I have met libertarians who say the government is so inherently corrupt that it has always been as bad as it is today, and who are totally defeatist about ever getting political power and seem to take pride in that fact. But not once have I ever met some one who said the right should be as bad as the left. Remember what people say online, is very likely not really what they believe.
It seems to me SFO just doesn't understand accelerationism. I've never heard right wingers advocate being like the left just because. I have heard some argue that pushing for what the left wants would, because the left's ideas are that unworkable, cause either collapse of the current regime or rebellion to replace it quickly rather than a slow decline into obscurity. It's an argument for ripping the wax/tape/bandage off rather than slowly peeling it off to decrease the overall pain.
I'm a libertarian. To a fault all we care about is consistency. So only under extreme circumstances have I heard people suggest that we should violate our own principles in order to win. The brutality type arguments come from the Nick Fuentes types. Who believe culture should be enforced at the end of a gun.
@@ChaosSwissroIl That's lib-right specifically. There's a growing population of auth-trads who want the government to step in and *force* the cultural and academic institutions to stop being so blatantly leftist - which I see why that is something to shoot for, but I 300% disagree the government should be the one doing that, because then the government would just coerce them to only say things the government (not the people) wants them to say.

"Moviebob's Revenge", as we say in the business
Something that I've noticed, and maybe it's just me, but the ideologically driven tend to judge things more on the intent rather than the outcome. They don't care if a movie or TV show is good as long as the intent is good, as long as it ticks the right ideological boxes. They don't care if a law actually makes things better, only that the law's intention is to make things better. They don't care if a policy actually helps black people, fights climate change, or provides economic opportunities. They just care about the intentions.
This is true of all ideologies, including right wing ideologies like Neo-Nazis and born-again Christians, but is most pronounced with the left because in current year the left holds institutional power.

What turned me off from Quartering was when he got on the bandwagon of trashing Projared and then deleted the video so he could make another one calling out other people for doing it once it came our that Jared was innocent, and pretended he never did.

I agree that we shouldn't just place everyone who isn't on the right automatically on the left because they tolerate their shit behavior. Especially in schools. Not everyone who works at those schools agrees with what is going on there. They don't want to teach the stuff that they push on them. If they don't they'll get ostracized from from their coworkers and probably fired from being "problematic". What a grate video and subject matter to wrap up 2021. Much respect Dev 👍
Amazon Wheel of Time is trash though. Woke steaming piles of blighted trolloc excrement. Problem is that the amount of people who have read the books and can see through the subversion of this amazing story is rather small compared to IP's that had much larger movie audiences, like Ghostbusters and Star Wars, and it didn't have the initial stellar seasons like Game of Thrones to build out a dedicated fanbase with enough social power to be reflected in the Rotten Tomatoes score.
It’s an ongoing trend that whenever a bastardized form of a beloved franchise is released, it bombs spectacularly.
Here’s some examples:
Death Note
Cowboy Bebop
The Last Airbender
All failures because the creators corrupted the source material, and expected fans of the franchise to love it blindly.
Incredible job on this video, great points, and articulated well. Thanks for the commentary.
The right-wing desire to be "just as bad as they are" isn't completely boneheaded. If you know you're a second-class citizen in a war, then everything is fair game and every tactic should be on the table.

But I have to say, when you, with such vehemence, say "because I'm not a fucking Commie," it hits a feel-good button in my monkey brain. I chuckled, and it was that exact moment I decided to leave my like.
Yes, I do pay attention to the details, but sometimes it's the simple stuff that gets me.
14:40 When a boot is on your neck, your first thought isn't whether it's on the left or the right foot.
'Experts say' has become 'we pulled this out of our arse'.
OK, so here's the thing about Rambo: Last Blood. I liked the movie for what it was, but I didn't think it was a good conclusion to the series. Rambo 4 did that much better, and I think it should've been left at that. Last Blood doesn't say anything about Rambo, doesn't give any sort of closure, and the whole revenge-in-Mexico setting looks out of place within the whole series IMHO.
However, I still disagree about why the critics hated it. That was clearly ideological and not well-thought-out.
So Rotten Tomatoes considers 60% to be the mark of a "good" film since it launched, and it also applies to the reviews themselves. I don't know if they ever said this on their blog but what they typically do is look for a numerical score at the end of the review and if it's at least 60%, such as 6/10 points or 3 out of 5 stars, they consider it "fresh"; otherwise they have to *gasp* read the review and determine if it's a positive or negative review. That leads to some obvious places for corruption:
* Reviews of Joker (2019) can become negative despite being 3/5 stars
* Audience Popcorn score needs to be 70%, or 3.5/5, to be considered "fresh", so the bar rises when more people are voting
And of course one can't forget when Armond White was removed from RT's index of professional critics because he did not give Toy Story 3 a fresh review and denied it a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer. The irony is people would probably agree with his review today, but if RT will remove a critic due to fan backlash in 2010 what they're doing today isn't surprising.
FINALLY! Someone else who thinks Dr Who was always crud! The Chris Ecclestone era was passable but when he left it quickly turned to camp and ludicrous plots with bad writing and ridiculous fluctuations of tone
I disagree with your last remarks, the right should fight back dirty, if you were playing a sport and your opponent elbows you in the jaw. And the ref does nothing to stop them. Well how many hit are you gonna take?
“Trump Era”
Ah yes, I remember that.
2016-FOREVER.

I wish dude. Our emperor sleeps on his golden throne. He was betrayed by Horus Lupercal aka Mike Pence, and now the forces of chaos are going to slowly feed on the husk of the imperium.
Like a 30ought6 on a jackrabbit, Trump got in gummint, and blewed a hole clean thru it.
About rightoids vs leftoids the only winning condition is if center holds. Purging one of the groups and some sort of civil strife (more or less bloody, with victims in hundreds or millions) is the loosing condition. I don't mean center has to be a middle ground between the extremes or exactly how center looked in 1970, but the long standing consensus of "liberal democracies". Governance of the people and for the people, where citizens are sovereign and free from undue burdens and constrictions. Both extremes want a break from this and a government for an ideal, one that has a mission to carry out, for whom citizens' will is secondary consideration.
Don't you even joke about Africa being real, Dev.
"We should be just as bad" is very different from "we need to push back just as hard".
It's simple physics. If a force is pushing left with 50 pascals of pressure, you cannot stop it with only 40 pascals of right-pushing pressure. You need 50 to stop it, 51 to start pushing it back.
Dev, your centrist view would have us apply 0 pascals right-ward pressure. You can worry about keeping the pendulum in the middle once it's push has been stopped. Right now it isn't.
I don't know why people conflate ferocity with degeneration. There is no virtue in being weak and inaffectual, but it is the opposite of virtue to be cruel and malignant with strength. Anyone who says you should not fight back is wrong. Anyone who says we have to fight like them is wrong. We have to push back, but we have to push back without sacrificing the principles that maintain us. It's not a matter of if we should, since its evident we should, but HOW we should.
I've said it since the days of gamergate, trust is vital, but some don't understand that and get cpnfused why others don't blindly listen. They could cut through 3/4 of the antivax mondset just by saying they know their credibility is shot at this point.
One of my favourite films, Law Abiding Citizen, has 26% by critics and 75% by audience. When I first saw that rating circa 2016, I stopped going to RT for reviews/ratings. Now I go to UA-cam and look for more centrist/conservative reviewers, who don't politicise the films they watch. All I want to know is whether the writing and acting are good or not.
Dev to Rotten Tomatoes: "I'm gonna bring the whole fuckin' diseased, corrupt temple down on your head. It's gonna be biblical."
Same things happening if not worse for music review sites like AOTY and even RYM.
The leftist or less "problematic" artists, get their songs/albums get higher voted while the right leaning or "problematic" (to them) artists get their songs/albums are the lowest rated there since both critics and users there are blatantly commies. With very few exceptions and I mean VERY few.
Edit: also, this is coming from someone who's also a Paleolibertarian who's favorite genre is Hip Hop we don't accept those Lolbert/Neocons who say those types of stuff.
The road to Eldorado is a golden jewel of a movie :D how dare you have a worse opinion than me on a great movie??? ;)
Have a great day and keep up the great work dev ;)
The movies all said 3/5 but the cutoff for fresh is 3.5/5.
Does that sidebar round down? If it does, then the ones that were 'fresh' could have had a 3.50 to 3.99 and the ones that weren't could have had a 3.01 to 3.49?
I almost wanted to cheekily downvote you for that Goofy Movie and Road to El Dorado comment. I've been trying to watch every theatrical animated film I missed and those two were the big "WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS" movies. El Dorado especially, I HEARD about A Goofy Movie. I love that Goofy Movie straight up has a fandom that wants to petition it to be added to the Disney animated canon and really the fact that it doesn't have a fancy Blu-Ray release yet IS a bit of a crime. I didn't see that film until WELL after I had become an adult and it was just an intense nostalgia bomb, which is weird because I had never seen it before. I'll never forget when I went to Best Buy to pick up a copy. I felt a little embarassed being a grown man and buying JUST a copy of that movie and nothing else...only for the woman at the register to IMMEDIATELY start freaking out because it was her favorite movie of all time and she didn't know her store carried it.
El Dorado? Picked it up out of a bargain bin at Big Lots for $5, literally ZERO expectations. So watching it and seeing something THAT high quality...was not what I was prepared for. Great animation, good humor, snappy pacing, overall VERY fun. Maaaybe one or two songs too many but it got me to immediately set my sights on the other 2D Dreamworks movies. Prince of Egypt was good and Spirit was...a movie MADE for a very specific demographic and an enjoyable watch. Sinbad...had a cool villain.
...what did my comment need to make a point or something?
EDIT: Oh geeze and then you started talking about trust in institutions. Yeeeah...I'll trust institutions again when they stop gaslighting me on a daily basis about GG. So...pretty much never. (But no seriously, if an institution can go ONE YEAR without blaming something on GG or some madeup boogieman, I'll trust them again. They don't even have to apologize. Just...STOP.)
How have we fallen so far? Some magic words used to determine a films worth, simpler times:
“It stinks!”
Jay Sherman!
I usually don't like this kind of commentary vids, but you are a pretty good talker, sir. Subscribed
I agree - Doctor Who was never that good.
I disagree but that's just because I thought of it more as a campy show
@@How_To_Drive_a_TARDIS To each their own.

So it is treason then.
The game is a 75 at best and that is coming from someone who got it as a kid.
12:30 Descartes "i think therefore I am" certainly applies here, brain in a vat and all of the other examples all basically boiling down to the same idea that all you truly know is that you exist
Fantastic video, the breakdown on trust in institutions at the end was perfect.
I strongly disliked Rambo Last Blood purely because it felt closer to a ripoff of Taken than anything to do with Rambo. At least it made the bloggers seethe to be reminded that Mexico does in fact have criminals too.
You aren’t going to push me away for having an opinion. That’s why I watch you. Because, you have a unique take.
Tom from the Podcast of the Lotus Eaters made an excellent video regarding virtue signaling in media. For those not on the know, he's the new guy with the spiky hair that often wears a suit or a sweater or something.
In his video, he discussed this sort of "subversion of truth and morals" brought about by both a capitalist and socialist society. In my understanding of it, the value we associate with moral superiority nowadays are often subverted for whatever gain, to the point of the value being completely different from what it actually was. Like how a product can seem expensive, but is really just unnecessarily overpriced or overproduced, the value of said product benefit from faking a sense of superiority rather than doing so out of merit, quality, or effectiveness. Apply that thinking to moral values, and you start to see why people are so quick to vouch for the "right side" of history that they go against the very principle they claim to have.
He said the solution to this is not to go to the alternative, or create a counter culture with the same tribal tendencies, this time with different politics. The solution is to collectively revert the system back to it's neutral roots. Judge things based on merit and quality that can be accepted universally, rather than for political or social gain. As the people against progressivism, leaning hard to the right and using their own tactics is an acceptance of defeat, and so society now plays the politics game while universal principles are often ignored.
I think this also applies to Rotten Tomatoes. There has to be a cultural collective effort to reject all forms of petty differences in order to preserve the craft of film critique. The way to solve disingenuous reviewers looking to spite the right, isn't to be just as spiteful and contrarian as them. Stick to what's right in your principles, not in your politics. When you see a "good woke movie", pay no attention to "woke" and just call it a "good movie." The art of filmmaking is above this stupid culture war, and it's time we draw the line on both sides and make entertainment neutral ground again.
your culture is way above movies.sieze and control it or the enemy will.
Great video, Dev! Looking forward to the next one!! 👍
