  • Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. For today’s video, I’m going to be discussing a topic that was requested by you guys in the comment section. I always read the comments, so if you want a topic made- then be sure to request it. The next one might be yours.
In this video, I’m going to be discussing Severus Snape, Lily Evans, James Potter and one of the purest forms of magic - the Patronus. The patronus charm is famous for it’s representation of light, happiness, and purity, and it’s produced when a witch or wizard casts the spell Expecto Patronum. There are two types of patronus charms, corporeal and incorporeal, and the type that the witch or wizard casts will depend on their experience / preference. The more basic form of the spell is the incorporeal patronus, which assumes no animal form and simply resembles a burst of white vapour or smoke, and the more advanced form of the spell is the conjuring of a corporeal patronus- which I’ll be focusing on in this video.
We see many of our favourite characters in the books/films achieve the notable and complicated ability to cast a corporeal patronus- and this can largely be attributed to the guidance provided by Harry in Dumbledore’s Army. Along with those in Dumbledore’s army, various other talented witches, wizards, and professors are also able to cast such a charm- Harry’s parents included.
Despite Snape’s dubious past as a death eater, it has been stated that he was the only death eater that was ever able to produce one. It’s widely thought that conjuring a Patronus when you’re evil is impossible, but that’s not entirely accurate, it’s just risky. In the story of Raczdiain, the first evil wizard ever to attempt the spell, he ended up being devoured by maggots which shot out of his wand. This doesn’t exactly make it inviting- but what Raczidian lacked were the necessary happy memories that you need in order to cast such a spell. Despite Snape’s questionable history, and the hardships that he endured throughout his life, he was still always able to think back to happier times - his childhood in Cokeworth with Lily Evans. We know that James Potter’s patronus was a stag, and we know that Lily’s was a doe- and it’s revealed to us in an iconic exchange between Dumbledore and Snape in the Deathly Hallows, that Snape’s Patronus is a doe as well:
“But this is touching, Severus,” said Dumbledore seriously. “Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?”
“For him?” shouted Snape. “Expecto Patronum!”
From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe: she landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office, and soared out of the window. Dumbledore watched her fly away, and as her silvery glow faded he turned back to Snape, and his eyes were full of tears.
    “After all this time?”
    “Always,” said Snape.
This scene depicts Dumbledore’s genuine surprise at Snape’s Patronus form - a doe, as he never understood the true level of commitment that Snape felt toward Lily. Dumbledore never suspected that Snape’s motivations had changed, but when he says ‘after all this time’ to snape- it paints a clear picture of just how much Snape cared for Lily. Dumbledore knew that Lily Potter’s patronus was also a doe- and it’s well known that when you well and truly love someone, that your patronus can change to match theirs. The patronus charm is a powerful piece of magic that expresses the true nature of the caster- and can be influenced by significant events or people in one’s life.
You can't choose your Patronus or change it wilfully, and the fact that Snape's patronus was still a doe, matching Lily, ‘after all that time’- was representative of the fact that he truly loved Lily, and that his feelings for her hadn’t weakened over the years. Lily Potter had been dead for 17 years, but his love for her was still strong.
However, one thing that I’m sure a lot of you have been wondering is: What was Snape’s Patronus BEFORE it changed to a Doe? If the Patronus changes to match the one that you love, then I think that it would be reasonable to assume that Snape had another Patronus animal at one point or another- one that was independent from Lily.

Personally I like the idea that lily's patronus was originally a stag as well, and then, once she fell in love with James, it became a doe. Snape, having always loved lily, never really had his patronus change much, if at all, but it was always representative of his love for her, therefore, they likely had matching patronus' during their school days and up until James and lily first fell in love. What species of doe and stag are involved I can't say, although for snape, and initially lily as well, I'd suspect european Roe doe, simply owing to their small size, while James' always took on a red stags shape and when lily's changed to a red deer doe to match her new husband's, it's likely snapes simply followed suit because of his constant love for her regardless. So in a way, it's likely that BOTH lily and snapes patronuses changed as they got older

Snape got Friend Zoned by Lilly potter and she went after the alpha "bad boy" James instead. Snape is then portraid as The Beta romantic more feminine male who's emotions and love never ends for LIly.. That is why he has the Doe Petronus as he was the same as Lilly.

I don't think Snape's original patronus could have been the doe because the fact that it changed after her murder is the irrefutable proof of his true loyalties that Dumbledore relies on every time questions arise.

He didn't really seem to fear anything, he was probably the bravest one in the series. He was a very driven and passionate man which he kept well hidden and was angry when Harry looked into his mind and discovered his past, by the way he carries himself and acts he was afraid to appear weak and vulnerable. Those years in school he was heavily bullied and lost the one he loves to James potter. All that he went through, all those things change you in fiction and the real world, he became a Deatheater but that's not *who* he is. He's seen horrible things performed by other Deatheaters and knows the very kind of people that become them.
For the man that doesn't seem to fear anything, I'd say his greatest fear would be succumbing to the weakness of losing all that which make him the good man he is.
I think his Boggart would appear as either a masked Deatheater or himself as one.

I think its a black swan: mate for life and never look for a new partner, the black plumage is more fitting, but they are also vicious with a bad bite and can break bone. Snape was a Deatheater with a powerful arsenal of spells. They are also fiercely protective of their young, to the point parks and ponds will put out warnings if it's swan mating season. He protected Harry for all those years, even though he didn't like him, for Lily.

I think the doe was Snape's original patronus. Harry first successfully produced a patronus during his 3rd year at Hogwarts and it was deemed to be exceptionally early and he was only capable to master it at such a young age due to his unusual childhood background. For this reason I conclude that Snape had not been able to produce a patronus before he became close with Lily and therefore there's no reason to think his patronus was something else before Lily. At the time he was first able to successfully cast a patronus charm, his life was already influenced by her very much.
On the other hand, the way he presented his patronus to Dumbledore suggested that he knew it was what it was because of Lily and how would he have known if it had never changed? I dont know. :p Although the more I think about it, there more possibilities I see that it didn't have to.

I personally think that Snape used to have a different patronus and it changed its form to fit that of Lily due to his feelings for her. Tonks'patronus changes its form when she falls in love with Remus and Snape even mocks her about it, probably because he knows very well why her patronus changed its appearance. I have also e often read that the patroni can show soulmates therefore James and Lily's patroni are a stag and doe but since Snape's feelings for lily are unrequited his changed into the same patronus as hers instead of turning into something that would complete hers. I like the animals that you mentioned, especially the vulture because it is a surprising bird to represent love just as Snape's true motivation and his feelings for Lily were surprising. I also wouldn't be surprised if his patronus used to be a bat since people keep comparing him to one (and I still think that Snape was originally supposed to be a vampire but then Rowling changed her mind).

The original Patronus for Snape was a Doe. Dumbledore was surprised his patronus had never changed...despite their estrangement in school, her marriage to James, her having a child exactly like James, and her death...none of those series of emotional blows changed how he felt about Lily...OR the fact that her memory is STILL one of happiness.
So, Snape is a constant. He took the left turn leaving Lily behind. When he takes the RIGHT turn, to save Lily, it's permanent.
If there MUST be a priot Patronus, it would be a vampire bat.
But, i think it was always a doe. Lily is a powerful witch..she would have produced hers...and Snape would have taken longer to mirror hers, because he could nothing else.

Great video as always. I like the research you put into the different animals that Snape may have possibly been associated with.
I don't think Snape had a patronus until he became a double agent for Dumbledore. Thinking about what happened, he had to be suppressing those memories because the dementors feed on happy memories and he was a death eater after all. So when Lily died, he learned the skill to protect not only himself, but Harry as well.

Additionally I think Snapes patronus always was a doe, because he met Lily so early in his life. His complete commitment and love for her was the reason why his patronus was a doe (matching hers completely) and James patronus was a stag (deep feeling for her, but still his "own person"). I hope that makes sense 😅

  • @WatchThatDene
    @WatchThatDene 3 роки тому +10

I immediately thought of a bat, considering Snape was often compared to them in the books 😂. The bat's half-mammal, half-bird form symbolises Snape's double agent role in the story. They live in caves and tunnels and fly in the dark so are commonly feared and associated with shadowiness in many cultures. And yet they are crucial to the health of certain plants and the ecosystem. All that screams Snape to me. He is the most ambiguous, mistrusted character in HP but is also the most important to the plot.
That being said, I do think the doe was always his Patronus because he loved Lily from such an early age. His love and loyalty for her endured far beyond her death and his Patronus taking the form of hers' demonstrated that. It's pretty sad because it echoes Lily's Patronus being so similar to James'. Lily had the same feelings for James as Snape did for her, and Snape had to watch that from the sidelines, forever heartbroken.

I saw in the HP Wiki that the deer is usually related to the Potters, mainly because of their patronuses, and also the following facts: James Potter was an animagus who transformed into a stag, and animagi can't choose the animal they learn to transform into. With that, I thought of another theory: Lily's patronus was originally a doe, both James's and Snape's patronuses changed to match Lily's, and when James underwent the ritual to become an animagus, the animal form that "chose" him was the stag. The interesting point is that James's patronus is the male deer, while Snape's one was the female deer, possibly mirroring their own link to Lily (courting in James's case, devotion in Snape's). Moreover, Harry's patronus is also a stag, mirroring his father's.

All three of the kids cast Expelliarmus at the same time, which is why it was powerful enough to knock Snape out (otherwise he would have just been disarmed). Snape was extremely unhappy about the entire situation with Sirius and Lupin and the kids, and was furious when they returned to the castle. Dumbledore likely intervened which is why the kids never got in trouble, but Snape was even more cruel to Harry after the whole fiasco.

Here's a topic for a future video: in the Prisoner of Azkaban, why did Harry insist that Peter Pettigrew live after he found out it was Pettigrew who betrayed Harry's parents, when before that Harry was ready to kill Sirius Black because he thought that Black was the one who betrayed them? That decision by Harry to spare Pettigrew after having been ready to kill Black for the same crime always struck me as odd. If Harry had allowed Pettigrew to be killed, then Voldemort likely would never have returned because Wormtail couldn't have found him and helped him regenerate a corporeal body. Voldemort was just about ready to give up ever getting his power back when Wormtail found him. Even though Voldemort would still have his Horcruxes to keep him from completely dying, without Wormtail, he wouldn't have returned to power. Harry's compassionate--but naive--decision to spare Pettigrew after wanting to kill Sirius Black for betraying his parents ended up allowing Voldemort to return. I don't get why Harry could stomach killing Sirius when he thought Sirius was guilty, yet after learning of Pettigrew's guilt, he let him live. Is there something I am missing that explains the change in Harry's perception?

The interesting thing would be that if Lily wasn’t always a doe but she developed it after joining the Order of the Phoenix (as it’s not a standard spell taught at Hogwarts as far as I’m aware) and she matched James Potter but Snape was the same as her because both of his love for her and because he felt they were the same. And I believe he still loved her even afterwards because she killed, freezing his image of her forever instead of him being able to see the increasing distance and being able to get on with his life. If he had sought his own life instead of finding the complete opposite of James (in retaliation), he could have eventually settled down and had little Snapes of his own with someone who loved him.

For one, a secret keeper can only give up information willingly. The whole point of torture is that you *want* to give up the information to stop the pain. Also, it would fix a plot hole. The Potters made Peter a secret keeper because they knew that Voldemort would expect them to choose Sirius. If the secret keeper can’t give the information through torture, then what would stop them from making him one? Anyways, in my mind I just assume that secret keepers CAN give the information through torture. Food for thought, I think it might make for an interesting video.

And interesting "As far as mating goes, we refer to crows as being socially monogamous but genetically promiscuous, as is the case with most birds. This means mated pairs will typically stay together for life, but extra pair copulations are not unusual, at least in some populations."

I think it was a turtle dove and then she died so it switched to a doe to keep her memory. I also think it’s a turtle dove because I think he’s a secret Animagi who’s animal form is that of a bird maybe a turtle dove

My question is what is the limit of dark magic that a witch/wizard can do before they can't cast the patronus charm?

I think a raven or crow would be perfect as Snape's patronus.
