  • I like messing with batteries,, and I like fixing stuff,, so trying to fix a broken battery,, is a win win :-)
My fix here is not optimal,, the old cells I had laying around,, was only 1,2ah,, where the DeWalt cells was 2,6ah.
I did a later video fixing these again : • DeWalt Ni-MH Rechargea...

.....I'm only at 9:51 but amazed at your patience. Anyone can gain knowledge and experience but gives me headache just thinking about attempting this. I have three 18v batteries, why I'm here, but they slide in the bottom of the drill instead of that plug in type. Just used one a week ago but last night it would barely turn. Found the double charger and wife had 2 batteries on it. Both were about like the one I had just tried. When inserted into charger the light stays red. Nothing happens. No charge starts. I will have to go get one to see what type it is but thanks for what you have shown here. Wife bought a package deal which has 4 or 5 tools that use same batteries so might be worth new battery but saw video quite a while ago showing how to "trick" the charger into charging. I hate that companies build in the design so it will not charge battery after volts or amps drop to certain point but are perfectly capable of being charged. Greed controls our world. Every aspect. Just how much money and profit is enough? Guess answer would be that to some people there is never enough. I hope their last thot is "where's my money?" The answer is but a breath, a heartbeat away. Great video. I wish you much success and hope this works which I am sure that it will.

The "Crimp Tool (Krimpzange)" is awesome 👍🏻, no chance to fall apart and the wire will never ever get loose again, costly but awesome like all good tools!
But it's a once in a lifetime buy, and you can inherit it further 😁👍🏻

      @@MyPlayHouse Thank You!
      And I will continue!
I had one of the cheap Crimping Tools before, and it was just annoying, it was always the same, you Crimp and then test with pulling at the cable, and I a lot of cases = it wasn't strong enough!
But then with the accurate and Quality Tool, = one Crimp, and you can hang at the cable and it's STRONG!
Won't miss it anymore, and it will hold my whole life!
      👍🏻

A word of caution concerning DeWalt DCA1820 NI-MH to Li-Ion Converter they have components (transistor) that tend to burn out easily (if you use a large drillbit och your circular saw blade get stuck). If you buy them buy 5-6pcs to be safe!

The strips probably are not solid nickel. Most likely they are just nickel plated steel. After the plating is corroded or otherwise damaged, the soldering becomes difficult, if not totally impossible.
I would try some slight charging on each low reading cell, maybe 100 mA for 15 seconds and then immediately measure the resulting voltage. The shorted ones are basically lost, but cells that are just low may have a little lower capacity than others in the pack and became low voltage during the last, final attempt to use.

Do the factory Dewalt batteries have any markings on them that would denote the Brand?
I've already rebuilt some battery packs using HF battery packs but they just never really had the "chooch" that the original batteries had.
now that its been a couple years i want to just buy SubC batteries in bulk packs and rebuild my battery packs as needed, but i don't want to buy a S brand again i want to buy the brand that Dewalt uses.

Absolutly horrible solution... You reduced the capacity of the full b-pack....
Usually we take 2 battery pack with same age usage and make one from them. It is way better solution.
Nihm is anyway not a very good stuff. Lion batteries has much better caracteristics. No memory effect, no sudden voltage drop on load,etc...
Some really heavy duty tools worth to upgrade lion, but it is a big work.

    • @Haimas
      @Haimas 5 років тому +2

I don't think Morten ever mentioned this was a good idea :). Me personally have upgraded a few tools to Li-ion with some good results. Have an old BOSH drill what used to be 14V Ni-cad , now it is using a string of 4 Li-ion 18650's and works better then new :) . Only thing I was unable to do is to find a BMS powerful enough to run the drill from it. Had to run it direct from battery and add a battery indicator as not to run them flat. Other stuff includes old flashlights, camping lights, emergency lights, hair trimmers, toy robots , etc. The possibilities are endless. I use BMS from ebay with a lithium battery chargers-adapters also from ebay . Not the best solution I know , but perfectly adequate for my needs.

When changing interconnected batteries you MUST change ALL of them. They all have to be the same, and should come out of the same box. Otherwise, they can overheat. Mister hypocrite here, once mixed 2 different brand AAA batteries in a flashlight. It worked fine. A couple of weeks later, it was warm to the touch, and needed to be discarded. If that were a TV remote control, back-up sump pump or other battery operated device, it could be a significant cost to replace, let alone a fire hazard.

I am going to do it different and then report the results to you. First I will use some chemical to dissolve the glue. Then I will seek out the existing (bad batteries) in the current pack and remove it, and attempt to super charge the bad batteries individually using alligator clips and a 9 volt battery--unless-they will charge in a standard battery charger --I will use that method. My attempt is to find the reason the battery failed and restore all bad components prior to re constructing the battery. I will replace any bad batteries found in the pack if they will not take a charge. I suspect that there only a few bad batteries in each pack. Using a volt meter to test each battery in the pack first. I will get back to you once the project is completed.

The bad thing is that in use the good cells will force a reverse polarity on the weak (low capacity) cell and that will kill the low capacity cell in very few cycles. Actually depends on how long the use is continued after the weak cell has reached zero volts. In principle that happens at point when 1.2 Ah has been consumed. On the other hand, during charging, the weak cell has to dissipate its share of the energy into heat after its 1.2 Ah has been stored. Ugly treatment either way!!
