Awesome tutorial! I have been churning out great live broadcast mixes using DAWS such as Reaper, Ableton and Logic because of ability use plugins of choice. Now I can use the same plugins for live mixing. I tested this method on my SL32R and Reaper using USB and it worked superbly. Then I tried it with one computer purely running UC Surface and the other running Reaper and all my favourite effects and AVB networking. It worked really great. Delay is very minimal and to most ears it would be unnoticeable. I used two computers to lighten the load of plugins. Thank you so much for this great tutorial. Greetings from the UK.
Thanks James! been waiting for this one. you answered a ton of questions I had about using the studio one plugins live. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video. much appreciated.
If your board allows for filtered recalls, you can set a "no plugin" scene that removes the inserts from vocal channels (or any channel that you are running plugins through as a channel insert). This way if you don't have the channel capacity to duplicate your vocal channels and have one set regular and one set tuned, you still have an option to get vocals back quickly if the computer crashes.

Also, is it possible to program a custom switch to move all channels from analog to usb as a backup in case of machine failure? Love your videos dude!
Using the digital "insert" (which isn't really an insert) with AVB requires patching digitally from the stage box/rack console to the computer, then the output back to the second console. I've never tried it, but it sounds tricky and complicated, and I've heard that patching doesn't "remember" very well on the computer side of AVB. There is a project recall filter that can recall the input source, but I haven't tested it out to see if there's any interruption with audio when you're recalling a project vs. just a scene.
Interesting. If this applies to any plugin, I would think this would be a cool thing to do if you want to record drums with a great 1073 mic-pre plugin. But, my God, this looks tedious as hell. As a recording drummer, I have a special affection for recording live drums. However, for obvious reasons, have no desire (or the funds) to purchase 12 external mic pre's. Is that what this functionality allows (in so many words)??? I'm using a Studiolive console, for no other reason than to record drums with minimal effects with ZERO latency. So, it would be nice to load mic-pre, plugins of choice, as well.
Is this possible to do using the StudioLive rack mixer as well as a Stagebox connected via Ethercon to the mixer? How would you set that up having to use Network as the source, thanks!
What if you're receiving all of the inputs from a network stage box over Cat6? The input on the console can't be analogue, it has to be network since over Cat6.
I believe that if you start with it on Network input, and then choose "digital" as the send source it may work. But beware of a feedback loop with "digital" as the digital send source, since if it's looking to USB to be both send and return, and the DAW/LiveProfessor is doing the same, you could make for some very loud digital noise
I assume you would EQ and control dynamics on the duplicated channel for the vocals right?? Not sure where the signal chain comes back into the board....or even out of the board for that matter.
Yes you'd EQ and compress the return. Each channel can choose its own input, whether it's analog, digital, or even from a different preamp/USB input from the channel number it's on.
Is this still plausible if you are using a rackmount mixer in stagebox mode and connecting to the console via ethercon. Can you then send to the computer and back to the channel to run effects processing from the computer?
Without having the actual stage boxes or another unit available to test it, my guess is you would need a Mac which recognizes AVB as an audio interface, and then route the AVB back to the console that way. Whether or not you can control the preamps from the destination console or not is yet to be tested. If anyone wants to loan me some of this stuff so I can check it out, I'd appreciate it!

Can I use AVB port instead of USB?
I would assume so! But I haven't tested it out that way.
Now I see you loading waves plugins on your studios live running through USB 2.0 I was wondering what's the magic you don't have waves server and card at the back of your desk and you don't run multiracks still you have no latency that's some magic bro can you make a video what's your routine look like from DAW on the computer to console
It's not "no latency," and neither is the waves server... the waves server is just dedicated DSP.
Ok I get all I need to do is getting studio live on my computer and my waves plugins will start working I don't need to spend extra cash
Too bad the console doesn´t have a soundgrid card option..
In a live situation, is it possible to run a couple incidences of IR modeling on acoustic instrument pickups?
I tried doing the same thing, the latency delay was too noticeable.
did you check your hardware buffer size?
thanks very much!!
You're welcome!
What about PC crashing?
hit the other input button really fast
@@AttawayAudio so would you have a emergency back up mix in que in case this happens for when you have to switch the out off the laptop?

James trust you good? Please can you make a video on how to configure studiolive and the superRack performer? Thanks
Anyone know if i can do this with a Yamaha tf5 with usb host?
I haven't looked into that! I'll be watching this comment for someone else to chime in 😃
@@AttawayAudio someone else here. we also have TF5 family, havent tried this yet but its next on our list. mainly for pitch correction, we would route the live vocal to whatever DAW we would use (probably logic), then bounce the corrected vocal back to a separate channel on the mixer, churchfront has a video on how to do this i think with the X32 series, I'll see if i can find it
