    Legend.
Erudite, witty, protean with a excellent turn of phrase and a genuine love of his subject.

Thank you for sharing this! Although I haven't always agreed with Hughes, I've always loved and admired his passion, eloquence and erudition. He is missed.

The execution painting's most obvious analogy is the peasant's cruciform posture and white shirt portraying Christ.

I think the defiance in the painting supersedes the byproduct of being pinned to the cross. One is by choice. The other is not.

Hughes was the perfect Art crtic:
    Ridiculously pompous.
    But, Bob knew his shit.
    I give him that.
    R.I.P. you old soak!

Goya should have been in Beethoven's shoes and pondered deafness. And of course Titian surviving several Plague epidemics to live to almost 100. These greats make Goya seem fairly average.

Everybody is unique due to the difference in childhood & teenage experiences, schooldays, neighbourhood and parents. Everyone has their weaknesses and strengths. It is futile to insist we compare Goya to other notable artists.
I bid you good evening madam.
