South Korea is very good at shipyard building and artillery manufacturing capabilities.
Both South Korea and Japan are de facto nuclear weapon states, in terms of the ability to produce one in 1-year timeframe.
S. Korea are leading the shipbuilding industry and doing well in exporting military supplies. They are also staunch allies of USA in terms of technology.

If it morphs into a treaty organisation, then definitely invite several others (other than who have already declared an interest - NZ, SK and Japan) to join. ROP, Thailand, Singapore etc. But right now it’s a technology sharing agreement, so ROP is an unlikely partner.

AUKUS likely to include Canada, Japan, Korea and New Zealand. Strange how this person does not state the obvious, these countries have been trying to engage China for a long time, but China keeps behaving in a way that makes other people nervous. Both Australia and New Zealand stated a long time ago that if another country built a military base in the Pacific then that would be considered as a significant threat. There is also FPDA. FPDA is regularly exercising. Seato is not. FPDA includes Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

I understand the concern, however, Japan, South Korea and the US control Chinese access to the Pacific and Indian Oceans. In particular the US has major bases in Guam and Diego Garcia. Not to mention Hawaii and other places. It is not hard to imagine this would make the Chinese nervous. Even more than the US, China depends on ocean based shipping for it's economic prosperity.
From the Chinese point of view, bases in the Pacific and other places are a way to ensure the US commitments to "freedom of navigation" are not empty or misleading rhetoric.
You and I may trust the Americans more, but the fact is the Chinese are doing exactly what the US, Britain, France and others have been doing for hundreds of years.

As an Australian I can’t believe how out of touch is this naive British analysis. No one is “sleepwalking into a new Cold War” or being “provocative”. The more stable democracies across the region understand we are already in the early phase of Cold War II as a result of China’s growing belligerence, threats and undermining of sovereignty of its neighbours and its friendship “without limits” with Putin’s Russia. Nice to be so far away Britain to sneer at Indo-Paciifc allies feeling more and more sufficiently insecure to consciously work towards stronger collective security arrangements. Sooner a long struggle in a new Cold War than a short and devastating struggle in a hot one.
Sleepwalking into a new cold war was pretty much use by most geopolitical analysts in describing NATO's disengagement in ukraine situation. Europe was seemingly hesitant to swiftly end the war by intervening to Ukraine's war. Since they are afraid to get drag. In reality, they are one of the reason why Russia attacked Ukraine. NATO aggressive membership caused Russia to attacked Ukraine. Although, Europe seemingly united, they aren't and not ready to engage directly into the war.

I like the idea of expanding and transforming NATO into a global military defense alliance even more.
This would be a kind of world police, a world defense alliance against international terrorism-including individual actors, groups, states, and alliances-as well as against extraterrestrial threats.
It would also serve as an essential foundation for securing our extraterrestrial endeavors in this and the coming centuries: research, expansion, and the establishment of states beyond Earth.

It is thought that Canada would like to join AUKUS, but their low defense spending levels and dithering over procurement has limited their chances of getting an invite. If Canada does get in, little New Zealand may come along as well, hanging on the coat tails. I doubt New Zealand has much to offer, but everyone loves New Zealand, and treats it like Australia's little brother. It hasn't been announced but it is thought likely that New Zealand may purchase some of the new frigates Australia will be building.
While the initial focus was on nuclear submarines, the original announcement did include developing drones, AI, and other cutting edge defense tech, and both Japan and South Korea would be ideal partners for that process. The recent announcement by Australia about developing 32VLS "crew optional" ships with the US (code for drone missile corvettes) was an example of the AUKUS defense strategy already in action and large investments in nuclear submarine building have already been made (eg Australia investing $5billion into Rolls Royce nuclear propulsion manufacturing and breaking ground in South Australia of a new nuclear submarine shipyard.) Whether other countries join or not, AUKUS is well underway, and will transform global defense activities and alliances for decades to come.
Yes. NZ doesn’t have much in the way of military power but I would point out that in WW 2 we lost more than most lives per head of population. Yeah, we’re small.

Sadly, in recent decades it has fallen into the same hole as Canada - not spending enough, and dithering over what little spending is happening. It is crazy to think that it has an air force that has no fighter jets. And it tells the allies that it will depend on if conflict does break out with China - you cannot bring your naval assets here.
Hopefully New Zealand will find its way out of that fog and return to the days when it used to punch above its weight. Unfortunately for the country, it has to come to terms with drastically increasing defense spending.
The country needs to learn from Singapore, a country far smaller than New Zealand, and with a similar size population, yet it operates a large fleet of F16’s and F15’s (and is buying 20 F35) and needs to use bases in Australia, US, and France, to overcome its country size limitations. And it has a navy that operates 32 ships and 4 submarines. It kind of demonstrates what New Zealand could potentially be doing regarding defense. Everybody wants to see New Zealand get back to past glories. The world is suddenly too dangerous not to.
Canada is also in talks to join AUKUS. What's clear is that an Indo-Pacific Treaty Organisation is forming. Others supporting this are Phillipines, Singapore (who uses Australian bases for training) Indonesia (quietly), Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia even though they won't admit it.

Their choice will be to retain their Kalimantan portion or maintain friendly trade ties with China. Just an FYI, NZ has just signed a joint defense agreement with the Philippines for joint drills with our militaries as well as talks in joining piller 2 of AUKUS. I can easily see the Philippines joining piller 2 as well!

India has shown little interest in leaving the Russian / Chinese sphere of influence - Even as China has had border clashes with India and China backed Myanmar pushing the Rohingya people out into India. I am south korean. South Korea going against China causes too much economic burden for south korea. It is simple for japan. Not for south korea because of north korea. China did helped to ease conflict between south and north korea. Also South korea depends lots on China economically. Cambodia and Laos leans more on China. Indonesia can't join because they are always neutral. Malaysia and Thailand are becoming more leaning to China. Only Vietnam and the Philippines, Singapore has existing close US ties.

South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Israel, the Philippines, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, probably not Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Fiji, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan or Bangladesh. And Indonesia is in Oceania. Certainly not Asian Countries with -s-t-a-n at the end of their names. Except for Kazakhstan. And Kazakhstan, like Turkey, is partially in Europe and can join NATO, even without an alliance for Countries that are not at all in Europe.

An Asian NATO would also mean that Europe would stand with the US to defend Asian countries against China. It would make them think twice before attacking Taiwan.

These developments are really unfortunate. This has all the ear markings of WW2. You have a rising power, then it was Germany and also Russia, wanting to exercise its power and establish itself as a global super by grabbing territory. This caused an arms race and confrontation that eventually lead to a war that killed 80 million people. The threats of territorial gain real in the case of Russia, theoretically in the case of China are causing an arms race that eventually will lead to an all out war. But this war will species ending.

The country that doesn’t get mentioned in The Pacific is France, which has a huge presence and for which Australia has had significant involvement in defending it. Does France get included, or do we just ignore the ground and sea its controls in The Pacific?

Amazing that for thousands of years, these nations have been variably at peace, at war or in strained alliances. In this sense, nothing is new under the sun.
There's already a 'Nato' in the Pacific. Its called Seato. Why doesn't Japan and South Korea just join that?
There is also FPDA. FPDA is regularly exercising. Seato is not. FPDA includes Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

No U.S. hegemony. Each region must have its own leader. Like France in the European sector and Australia or South Korea in the Pacific region.
