Ending Putin's invasion: Military experts outline the future of Russia, Ukraine and NATO 2 years on

  • To mark two years since the beginning of the 2024 invasion of Ukraine, we speak to an expert panel with first hand experience of defence, diplomacy and the war in Ukraine.
    Joining us are:
    - Defence Analyst and former director of RUSI Michael Clark
    - Documentary maker and journalist Nick Sturdee, who has visited Ukraine multiple times since 2014
    - Lord George Robertson Former Secretary General of NATO and a former defence secretary
All three discussed how NATO can bring the war to a close and how the war in Ukraine could be the misstep that ends Putin's regime.
Speaking on a panel on Times Radio's Frontline with Kate Gerbeau Lord Robertson said:
"The Ukrainians have taken back half the territory that the Russians took and the first stage of the war. They really have stayed close together, which was not Putin's expectation. NATO has grown by two neutral countries. Now joining the the Americans are welded and the West and Europe, again, in a way that Vladimir Putin had not anticipated. So, you know, the idea that that is the sort of stalemate at the moment, and that means that the Ukrainians are not winning. It also means that the Russians are not winning and that Putin has made a dangerous gamble where he has lost maybe, you know, 300,000 young people and converted his whole long term economy into something that will never again be the the model that he wanted it to be."

USA have many many times broken agreements and this will just be one in the history of many. Thanks to USA Germany and EU will just leave Ukraine to itself to appease Russia because of Russias nuclear capabilities and without USA Europe is nothing without Americas help. Europe will sacrifice Ukraine for their own cowardice and security. But you can't appease a monster like Putin. He will only continue if he is not stopped NOW!!!

  • @jameskellogg83
    @jameskellogg83 2 місяці тому +4

Although I realize that many people may disagree, I believe that the error that NATO has made with Russia in regard
to Ukraine, has been in not being anywhere near aggressive enough. I believe that deterrence is very important. I think that
great efforts should be made to either stop bad things from happening or to stop them from getting worse.
I think that a major motivator for Putin's actions in regard to Ukraine starting with the 2014 invasion and annexation
of Crimea, has been his belief that the West is indecisive and scared and that he could get away with doing pretty
much anything that he wanted to.
I believe that the primary reason for the inadequate reaction of NATO has been fear of a nuclear conflict. Basically,
I believe that through nonsensical bluffs and the West's own independent fear, Putin and his cronies have succeeded
in cowing the NATO alliance into allowing Russia to seize Crimea in 2014 and begin a new invasion in 2022 that could
    result in Ukraine's eventual defeat.
I believe that the chances of Russia's using nuclear weapons in Ukraine is miniscule at best. If Putin/Russia used nuclear weapons,
I am sure they realize that they could easily be "signing their own death warrant" which I very much doubt they have much interest in
doing. I strongly believe that corrupt government officials and oligarchs who spend billions of dollars of stolen money on colossal yachts
and mansions have very little interest in committing suicide in attempts to keep stolen lands in Ukraine. People who are very interested in
worldly goods of great luxury, are expressing a strong desire to go on living.
When Russia seized Crimea in 2014, I believe that the U.S. and the rest of NATO should have told Putin in "no uncertain terms", that if
Russian forces did not immediately leave Crimea, they would send their military into Crimea and destroy the Russian forces
that were present there. If Russia had not complied with that demand, then NATO should have made that threat a reality. These actions
almost surely would have prevented the 2022 Ukraine war from happening and could have saved hundreds of thousands of Ukranian
    lives.
In 2022 when U.S. intelligence predicted that Russia was about to invade Ukraine, the U.S. and the rest of NATO should have warned
Putin/Russia, that if they go ahead with their invasion, then the combined NATO forces would enter Ukraine and destroy the Russian
military that was present. Again, I think that that this action could have very possibly stopped the Russian invasion before it happened.
I still believe that the U.S. and the rest of NATO should take direct and aggressive action now in the war in Ukraine. I believe that the combined
NATO forces should send into Ukraine a very large military force and destroy the Russian military that is present there. Russia is no longer
a super-power and has not been one since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia has demonstrated in Ukraine for all to see, that it does
not have a great military. The Russians are well aware that they cannot possibly successfully stand up to the U.S. alone or to the combined
forces of NATO. The only real danger that Russia has is a large nuclear arsenal that I would strongly suggest that they dare not use. Confronting
Russia on a Ukrainian battlefield would in fact not create "World War III". - This is a myth. The 32 countries that make up NATO versus Russian forces that
are present in Ukraine, is not a World War. It is the total destruction of those Russian forces that have invaded Ukraine. NATO needs to "grow a backbone".
China, North Korea and Iran are not sending armies to Ukraine to fight "shoulder to shoulder" with Russia. - This is not going to happen. This threat of
World War III is little more than nonsense that Russian would dearly love for the West to believe.
Russia should be forced to give back to Ukraine, every inch of land that they have illegally seized including Crimea. After all Ukrainian lands have been
returned, Russia should be compelled to pay backbreaking reparations to rebuild all of Ukraine that they have destroyed.
A stern message needs to be sent to all aggressor nations that all they will receive for their actions is military defeat, isolation and economic collapse.

A good bit of the blame for the Russian "traffic jam" can be placed on corruption and lack of discipline regarding SOP first tired equipment was equipped with Chinese tires but not the military versions but the civilian versions because they were cheaper and so funds could be pocketed. Secondly the equipment which was in storage was not properly maintained for example the routine movement of vehicles that is necessary just so that they don't always have one side facing the sun caused the civilian Chinese tires to deteriorate and burst on the exposed side. Maintaining a standard Table of Organization & Equipment as is done in most western militaries would have prevented that otherwise simple problem.

It seems a contradiction that political leaders, military commanders and other experts across the majority of the West say we must defeat Putin but then do not seem to act with sufficient urgency to get our weapon supples up to scale, this causes confusion amongst the population and emboldens Putin.

the apple tends to fall close to the tree. Russia has rich literature on this subject, a cultural vicious circle where tolerating misery, sacrifice, pride leads to a certain mindset. Top down society expects children to be next, tolerating it is the lesser evil to many a Russian. Again, greatly reflected in their literature, philosophy, history. The lyric is a bit simplistic in that sense - like a model wishing for world peace at a beauty pageant. Sounds nice.
But Putin basically says, if you don't tolerate me, your children will be next.

Russia does n9t have air superiority over East Ukraine or sea of Azov. Ukraine have it over on occupied Ukraine and Russia over land between Ukraine and moscow. If Ukraine can establish it over crimea with land forces nearby they could potentially take crimea and it would then be easy to defend it. The Donna's would become a Russian stronghold but Ukraine would not be spread across a large front and be able possibly to go on the offensive. But it could dig in for another few years. However Ukraine would have to take all of southern Ukraine to get to thismposotion.

In 2022, the Ukrainian trained army was the most powerful in Europe at over 800,000. Anybody with any sense of scale would know that Russia's 190,000 would never be enough to mount a 'full scale' invasion. The level of competence from these 'experts' is atrocious.

Ukraine rapidly understood that their much touted offensive was going fail. Trying to capture and hold territory was not realistic without airpower etc. At which point Ukraine switched to a strategy of attrition. This strategy has been pretty impressively successful.
If you look back at various war strategy discussions, the eventual need for Ukraine to abandon Adiivka has been known for months.
Ukraine was only going to hold it whilst the casualties they could inflict were in the ratio 5:1 or better. Once Russian forces had penetrated into the urban areas, it became impossible to maintain that casualty ratio and at that point any wise commander arranges an orderly as possible exit to a pre-prepared new strong defensive position.
The Russians will gloat over their 'great victory' for quite a while. There is a good chance that in the long run it will prove to be pyrrhic.

Small point on neutrality bias, "thousands of casualties both sides" could have been clearer with something like "with an apparent ratio in military casualties of multiple times higher in Russian ones, while civilian casualties are higher by several multiple on the Ukranian side"

This is a good mix of UK opinion. I will start by offering my Political Science (Temple University) and US Military Training (MI Brigade/AR Company) credentials. Maybe it is better to understand a mono polar world.
The US leads by minimizing input until it is necessary. In this regard, many US leadership moves are via the UN, or NATO, IMF, World Bank, World Trade Organization, and other group activities. The US puts enough resources in these organizations to apply on soft power in most cases. In other times, the US uses a UK and French colonial policy of letting local leaders and elites solve issues until intervention is necessary. Of course, when 2ND and 3RD level powers intervene, the US has been forced to intervene as a counterweight. This model of leadership is sustainable for a very long period with evolving economic and political conditions.
Compare the US leadership model to historic and current authoritarian leadership models. Getting compliance in the authoritarian model almost always depends on Force projection. Over time, Force projection becomes increasingly more expensive and non-compliance by the subjugated increases in cleverness and frequency. Remember, authoritarian models require spending more on their internal maintenance of power as external Force projection costs increases. This gap has usually destroyed authoritarian leadership beyond its own borders over time.

well except that its no longer a uni polar world like it was in the 1990s/2000s....but the american neo cons are refusing to accept the reality of todays multi polar world and thats why the USA keeps intervening and invading countries with poor results - and its american neo con foreign policy that duped Ukraine into fighting this war for the USA against a country it has no chance of defeating...the neo cons used Ukraine to incite Russia into invading because they thought that getting Russia into a long protracted war combined with economic sanctions would lead to regime change in Moscow, a collapse of the russian economy and dissolution of the Russian Federation. Like all neo con fantasies this one also ran into Reality and has caused a disaster for ukrainians and wasted 200 billion dollars of americans tax payer monies. Peace talks must start in earnest .

Even as a civilian in Ireland with the news that Russians were massing on the Ukrainian birder, and particularly that they were on military exercises and had no intention of invading Ukraine, it seemed obvious that was exactly what they were going to do. Especially when Putin said it. So it was no surprise to me unfortunately when they did. With all the military experts in the world, NATO and the US why did they not tell Putin to his face they would not stand for it for it would have been the only language he understands? Its baffling the EU were so spineless knowing he would go for the Baltic states and even Poland if he got the chance for that is his only reason for existing, he's a dictator and dictators can only exist if they have wars to preoccupy their people with, otherwise he has to justify his existence with domestic policies or just use brutal force to stay in power. This might seem naive analysis but isn't it the lesson of history?

It would be refreshing if those commenting on the Russo-Ukraine war would stop thinking so one dimentionally and understand that Ukraines offensive has a multi dimentional element that is attacking all areas of Russia and Russian occupied territory and not just along the thin line of contact in the ground war in the East and South of Ukraine.
if you think Ukraine's offensive has failed, it's probably because your idea of success, is based on Ukraine's previous routes of Russia in Kiyv, Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts, where they took back 56% of the area Russia occupied in the first few months of the war, in just 7 months and that is an unrealistic expectation.
This is not a Hollywood movie and Ukraine are facing the, reputedly, 2nd biggest military in the world, who had 12 months to prepare their defence on the remaining 48% that they'd occupied! 🤔 .
However, Ukraine has liberated 1232sq miles of Russian temporarily occupied lands, through battle zones with well prepared defences, opening 4 offensive fronts on land, while neutralising 400,000 Russian soldiers (KIA) and 800,000 minimum wounded.
In comparison to Russia, supported by the entire might of the 2nd biggest military in the world, Iran and North Korea taking 12 months, yes 12 months, to capture just 3sq km around Marynka and nothing of any significance since Bakhmut 1year ago
On land, Ukraine has broken through the 1st and 2nd lines of Russia's defences, breached the Surovikin lines and they are now behind Russian defences inside Russian trenches, as well as opened several bridgeheads across the Dnipro river and pushed Russia out of the areas around Robotyne, Krinky and Avdiivka, with Russia losing, on average, 1000 soldiers a day, to Ukraine's average of 100, a 10-1 ratio, with equipment losses of 1-6.4 in Ukraines favour.
On Water, Let's not forget that Russias mighty Black Sea fleet has been ordered by Putin to retreat, YES RETREAT, into the far east of the Black Sea, to dock inside Russia, scared to come within 600km of Ukraines coast. Forced out of Russias historic and regional navy stronghold Savastapol and the Azov Sea by Ukraines actions, after losing 25 ships and a Submarine. Forced to retreat by Ukraine's actions and ALL that done by Ukraine, a country that doesn't even have a navy!
And in the Air, Let's not forget that Ukraine's airspace is a "no fly zone" for Russia's air force, who can't come within 15km of Ukraine's borders or cities for fear of being shot down and are relying on unmanned drones to do their work with decreasing success and at the same time Russia is losing on average a dozen aircraft a week in airbases all across Russia and hundreds of miles from Ukraine, with five more struck just last week with Patriot missiles from the US, Ukraines newest arrival.
On the Run again, Let's not forget that Russia has evacuated hundreds of thousands of Russians, both civilians and senior officers, from Crimea scared of Ukraines capabilities and a "Storm Shadow" visit or two, to Crimea and the Kerch Bridge.
Lastly, Russias propoganda machine has become so preposterous it's lost its value with only those at home in Russia and those already supporting Russia believing the nonsense and that support is waining.
Now tell me again you pro-Russians and trolls, with Ukraine advancing on land, having taken the Black and Azov Seas away from Russia and doing Russia more damage in the air than visa versa, that Ukraines offensive hasn't been successful so far? 🤔

Seems good news today for Russia with Ukraine withdrawing from Avdiivka. BBC article saying basically Russian weight, size, is winning, long and slow. Other article by them recently says Ukraine are having big trouble getting men to join up any more. The ones willing are largely dead or injured. Perhaps an end is on the way and peace will be restored with a chunk back in Russian possession. Better to spend on rebuilding rather than more munitions.
