- South Korea held talks about joining part of the AUKUS defence deal on May 1, Defence Minister Shin Won-sik said. Shin said that there were talks about how Seoul could contribute to the second phase of the AUKUS pact at annual meeting of South Korean and Australian officials.
Formed in 2021, AUKUS is a two-stage security pact between Australia, UK and the US to counter China's growing power in the Asia Pacific region. The pact is designed to boost all three countries’ defence and research capabilities amid growing competition with China. The first stage or “Pillar 1” to give Australia nuclear submarine technology is limited to the core trio of the AUKUS.

These countries are some of the wealthiest, most technologically advanced, they are not stupid like you. You don't seem to know that these are like minded, democratic countries. They are wary of china's actions in the east, south china sea. China is not abiding by international law rules based order. China is not abiding by unclos. China has territorial problems with almost all its neighbors. These democratic countries are just reacting to the actions of a dictatorship country like china.

Even Vietnam (former enemy of the US) are now seeking closer ties with US and its allies. Same issue as the Philippines they both worried about China's actions in the spratlys. Seems most people here in the comments section think we are talking about a military alignment, which already exists between these five countries. What they are talking about now is sharing tech, and spreading the high cost of Research and Development.
It is so the partners can save money by developing tech together. Similar to the way the ISS is better than everyone building their own individual space stations.

The US likely will only share its highest level technologies with Australia and the UK. Congress will block expansion of core security and defence secrets, outside of AUKUS. Any other countries aligned are likely to be second ring rather second pillar. The AUKUS countries have worked together on defence for over one hundred years. New Zealand would be an uncomfortable fit in this league.
I think it's high time that Australia , Japan, Korea and The Philippines lead by Americans form a mutual defense treaty together, coz all of this countries have a defense pact with the U.S already.

@@edwingan1988 that is one obvious way to differentiate but I actually can tell them apart from physiological appearance with about 80% accuracy, it's hard for foreigners because they are subtle differences. The ones that I find difficult to differentiate are usually people who are mixed (CH/KR/JP) particularly Korean-Japanese with some ancestry from China.
