  • Howdy all! Do you ever feel like you are checking on your freeze dryer constantly? I have figured out a way to check on your freeze dryer 24/7 via a Wi-fi camera setup for under $50. The ReoLink E1 Pro camera can do all of the functions the more expensive cameras can, like infrared, night vision, panning up and down, left and right, recording, screenshots, timestamp, movement notifications etc......BUT....it does it for $49. I have been using this for the last few cycles of freeze drying and once you get used to this, you will never look back. Now you can check on your freeze dryer while you are at work, sitting in your recliner or before you get out of bed. One of the best features is being able to set up a phone notification when your freeze dryer screen changes. That means when your freeze dryer goes into the final dry or has completed, it sends a message to your phone with an alert. This also means that if for some reason, you have an error or problem during the cycle, it will send a notification for that as well. I also show my impromptu camera stand for the Reolink E1 Pro.

Just remember that with any of these security cameras, when you allow them to have access to your local area network, and also to the internet, you now have a fairly powerful computer (powerful enough to digitize and stream high def video) for which you have no knowledge or control of its software, and no way to implement any sort of firewall or "antivirus". This is not just a problem for unauthorized people intercepting your video and audio (generally nobody cares about that), but remember that because the device now has access to your entire network, it can potentially capture and "share" any traffic that happens on your network. You've basically given the device the "keys to the kingdom" and allowed it unfettered access to the internet.
Because millions of any one model of these devices are sold, they're a prime target for hackers. By "breaking" one of them, they have access to all of them. And that allows them to create a large army of zombie devices that they can use to implement DOS attacks, etc. They've also been used to implement distributed porn servers, etc. And worst of all, all of the traffic on your LAN is now potentially visible to a hacker or the servers that these units often use, which are typically in China.
Ideally, you should sequester these security cameras or security camera systems on a separate network (where your normal surfing, shopping, banking, etc. is NOT). You can also set up certain routers to implement a custom VPN so that you can still access the video remotely. But this takes a bit of work, and you lose some features.
Anyhow, just a heads up. Most people wouldn't think of running a PC without some antivirus and firewall setup. Yet they'll scan the QR code on an inexpensive gadget of unknown origin, and allow it full access to their network and the internet. One of the largest security breaches in history, compromising millions of credit cards and other personal data happened because the company allowed their HVAC contractor to connect their heating/cooling system to their main network to allow the contractor to remotely monitor, troubleshoot, and adjust it. These "internet of things" devices can be fun and handy, but they need to be treated as the potential security breaches that they are.
Sorry to take some of the fun and joy out of all of this. But it pays to be careful.

Great ideas with the cameras. I have not gotten my freeze drier yet, but an idea for mounting the camera bracket is to use strong magnets mounted to the underside of the piece of wood. I use this sort of setup for othe purposes.

@gdaddy, so you are perfectly fine running your FD while you're not at home? Pardon my ignorance, but unlike Brian, I am NOT retired, so I have to go to work. I'm most worried about leaving these machines running all day unattended. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for your reply.

I’ve used a WYZE cam for several months with my freeze dryer. For what it’s worth, the legibility looks the same and is still a bit difficult to see the upper left screen. Your example is in a light-filled room. When the lights go out, I’ve had issues and eventually purchased a small lamp. The camera did not do well, even in night mode, looking at a back lite screen.

I wish the freeze dryer was smart and there was an app to go with it. That way there would be no need to rig up a camera, just check the app.
This is a great option to meet in the middle. I wonder if it’s possible to plug a custom device into the USB port that wound broadcast the status to an app 🤔

As noted in my comment elsewhere, there's no need - the controller board has WiFi hardware already built in. If HR wanted to, it'd be brain-dead simple to patch the software to turn it on and ship out relevant data/listen for incoming commands. An app for your device (phone, tablet or desktop) could then let you monitor/control the machine exactly as if you were standing there in front of it looking at/tapping on the screen. (other than the obvious need to be physically present to load/unload a batch, open/close the door, or open/close the drain valve)

@Retiredat40 have you had any problems with the Demister filter. Mine seemed to have broken down and is adding a lot of water into the motor. The inside mesh seems to have dissolved. I would think it would be stainless. Do you know anywhere we can order new demister filters. I contacted Harvest Right and no contact back yet. Any ideas on a better demister and how often should we be changing it. I wish they had a load recommendation of when to change it. I washed it out and dried it but any mist turns to small metal particles put into the motor. Please do a video on what you have found out. I have done a few 100 loads and just my last oil change the oil was immediately filthy brown goo. I am so scared my Premier motor is now compromised. Can't get to 500 sucktion either now. Also can't seem to upgrade my software, I have used 4 different thumb drives but it won't update.

I just got my FD and had ordered this camera to keep watch since the FD is not in the house. I am having trouble getting to pick up anything on the screen. The backlight blocks everything out. Even at night since it has night vision I just get a white square screen. Is there setting I can change to correct this?

Shouldn't be needed - At least in the late 2021/early 2022 4-tray version I've been inside, there's WiFi hardware built directly into the controller board. All that's needed is for HR to release a software patch that actually turns it on and sends the relevant info. It would be absolutely trivial to, in effect, put the display/controls on your phone/tablet/desktop via an App so that you can do literally everything other than physically open/close the door, insert/remove trays, or twist the drain valve. (I STRONGLY suspect that the "pharmacy" or "lab" version is already able to do this)

I expect Bluetooth and internet capability is already under development but it’s not a reason for me to buy a new unit. Already have too many smart devices in the house that can be hacked. If they had a silent pump … that would be an incentive to upgrade.

I have had my HR since September 2021 and noticed when my HR drier is running, I see a Wi-Fi connection available on my network. I can connect to it but that's all, with no software to access the controller itself it's just a connection available. I just figured one it might just be for factory use or there would be a future software program available in the future. Not sure if anyone has noticed this it may be only the newest models?
