  • Why the Sten just isn’t going to work and why I don't like it. I don't think it's necessarily a bad product, I just don't have a use for it and it fits horrible.

This jacket can be impregnated with wax and it will be water and windproof. But it will breathe better than a membrane. And the fabric is much stronger. I didn't like Gore-Tex, there is no breath in it. G-1000 is good in light wind and rain. At the same time it breathes well. Gore tex can be worn in a storm. Unless you're working on a fishing boat in the North Sea, the fjall is a pretty good everyday jacket. And for comfort, you can put something under it, fleece, a puffer, a sweater.

I totally understand your point, I have one, the reason I bought mine was because my body temperature raised due to medication and I needed a jacket for spring/autumn for daily use going to the shops, in and out of the car, walking in the woods etc. Its light and breathable, plus if it does get wet it drys quick, the 35% cotton adds strength over an all polyester jacket. Also Fjallraven sizes are not for normal people, you have to have an athletic build, but its not just that the cut can be wrong too, really is trial and error, I recommend trying on before you buy.

It's made for regulating the perfect body temperature in mild cool dry weather while hiking. And it does work for that and only that.

Thanks for the comment. I have a lot of wool garments that do that job so it’s likely I’d never even use any G1000 for that purpose and that I never would have found a use for it. That’s very useful information for anyone looking at a Sten.

@@JimLBon For me it depends, i use my mackinaw cruiser for hiking and it works perfect when it's cool and not super windy. When its cool but not cold but the wind makes the ''feel'' temperature a lot colder than it is then g1000 will work better than wool. G1000 isn't anything special other than just being good old polycotton but i find that sometimes you can't get better wind block/breathability balans than polycotton. Not even from the super expensive fabrics.

I appreciate that you didn't knock the product, just openly stated that you don't quite understand the point of it.
G1000 is a material that is kind of difficult to place in the 21st century. As you have stated, for every use case there is a fabric that performs better - Goretex, eVent etc. are more waterproof, down and synthetic insulations are warmer, softshells are mostly windproof and warmer.
I think what G1000 excels at is versatility. In its native state it is extremely breathable and lightweight. If you want some water- and wind-repellency while maintaining reasonable breathability you can give it a coat of wax. If you want more of it, give it two coats. Or three. If you want to maintain breathability, leave out the areas under the arms that rarely get hit with rain anyway. If you are cold, layer a fleece underneath as you would with any synthetic hardshell. When summer approaches, just wash the wax away and the jacket is super light and breathable again.
You can wear this thing all year around and customise it to your needs - the only thing it will never be suitable for is heavy rain, because waxing will never make it completely waterproof.
I have Fjällräven trousers made of G1000 that I have worn hiking in hot and cold climates, in Africa and Scotland, in summer and winter, that I have climbed in and use for indoor and outdoor bouldering - and they are just great at everything! They are going on ten years, by the way, and still in great shape.

Thanks for the feedback. I find that G1000 is an excellent material for pants. I have since acquired another G1000 jacket that I like much better. I use it riding my bike.

I had the same problem with similar products. The only real use that I have found is that they are good to wear around a campfire because they are spark resistant and they are abrasion resistant in case you need to go through brushes.

I have jackets in Ventile cotton which block the wind better than G1000 does. My experience with G1000 is that it blocks wind and holds off rain much better when heavily waxed like you would when 'tinning' cotton canvas. For convenience and less fire hazard I wax my G1000 trousers with boot wax - I get a good deal on the Grangers G-Wax at work so I use that. It makes my G1000 trousers effectively waterproof and windproof, at least up to polyester microfibre levels, but tough enough to bushwhack in.

Yeah, if you're out bushwhacking I'm sure you're exposing your things to uses I'm just not familiar with.
My read on G1000 thus far is that it essentially lighter weight, lighter duty and as a result the properties I prize in waxed cotton are severely diminished. As I understand it the G1000 fabric was specifically invented to solve problems encountered by an expedition to Greenland in the 1960's. I would suppose that the polyester in the fabric makes it much more pliable and pleasant in very cold conditions. And in those cold conditions the reduction in waterproofing is less important as snow is not challenging to deal with in terms of moisture compared to rain. I'm sure these are great, useful products but that it's for a use case I don't have.

@@JimLBon I have a jacket in Ventile cotton which is great but I haven't found any cotton canvas trousers that seemed like they'd fit or had the kind of pockets I need, hence the outdoor polycotton stuff, which is much improved with the boot wax. I have seen some nice Ventile trousers by Brynje, a Norwegian company, but the price is eye-watering. There are some heavy-duty G1000 offerings but the pockets etc aren't great so my stuff is regular weight trekking stuff with reinforced areas for more durability.
Work clothing is generally too big for me as I'm only 127lb and mostly an XS or S in European sizes.

Being on the extreme other end, I feel your pain about finding good things that fit well. On another note, I just got back from a very wet adventure in the woods involving a very large fire. Happy to report the G1000 pants I had worked out spectacularly and I’m beginning to see its utility. I think pants are generally a better test bed for something anyway, as it’s just an all around harder job to be pants.
