A comical waste of time looking at my grandma’s 1988 Louis Vuitton Speedy 30. While it seems to be well made and durable it is undoubtedly massively over priced and uglier than sin. Enjoy!

This is my new project bike. It’s an early 90’s Stumpjumper I am building into a gravel grinder. Really, just a very slightly gone through mountain bike with ergonomic and drivetrain changes along with a restoration.

This is the current setup of my 88 Stumpjumper commuter bike. 80’s and 90’s mountain bikes are versatile, buildable, simple bikes that can be made to suit a wide variety of cycling hobbies. They can be built cheap with very high quality older components, modernized or go full Gucci!
Jim’s Poshmark Filson Worsted Wool Weekender (Mile Marker) Jacket Review
Переглядів 1784 місяці тому
I picked up this worsted wool Weekender for a steal off Poshmark. The most similar thing available from Filson currently is the Mile Marker and I don’t think they have a worsted wool variant currently. These are great for cool, not cold, weather OR as a thin outer layer in cold weather with good layering under.

Jim's Poshmark Filson Waxed Tin Cloth Pants Review
Going from Rene Herse to Schwalbe Marathon Plus... I'd rather fix flats regularly than ride a tyre that's about as inspiring as concrete, but that's just me. My experiences with Marathons is that there's a lot of hype behind them, but as a local bike shop mechanic when I see them fail, they fail good and properly, often without warning. Instances include the wire beads poking through the sidewalls or just rattling around inside their casing. For heavy duty commuting tyres I'd recommend spending about half as much money and going for a Kenda Khan. My favourite inexpensive tyre is the Kenda K-Rad though, it's light and supple but I've had far fewer punctures on a K-Rad than the Maxxis DTHs I ran prior.
Well, if I have problems with these Schwalbe’s I’ll take your advice. I’ve had a lot of good luck with Kenda in the past. This bike is for business. I ride it slow, sub 20mph over 90% of the time and I use it for work. I’m not looking for inspiration, I’m looking for reliable transportation. When I’m on the clock I don’t have time to waste fixing my third flat of the week. If you want to see the bike I built for inspiration, see my 1991 Stumpjumper series.
Heard you mention Recycled Cycles - a fellow Seattleite?
I am!
I have a Vanquest javelin 18. The build quality is super high and it's a great bag (but the organization is overkill for me)
You can carry a foldable SBR in there
Awesome bag, I love mine. Super jealous of that medium field bag. I wish their store hours were better for a weekend trip to Chicago. Literally the only complaint about Defy is that I can't get to their showroom. Thanks for the vid!
What’s the chances of changing the Apollo tyre to Tubeless. What are your thoughts?
I don’t have the Ghost anymore. In general I’m not a fan of tubeless over tubes, so it’s not something I’ve ever spent any time considering.
I bought the journeyman on a trip to DC at one of their stores. I wore it one time. ONE TIME. I tried to return it immediately after because the straps did not fit comfortably for long-term wear. I'm a woman, I have no idea if that is part of the issue but the bag sags even when the straps are at their tightest and it's uncomfortable. I told Filson that I had worn the item. I was very clear about the situation. I sent the bag back. They sent it back to me saying it was not saleable because it was worn. Yeah I told them that. I contacted customer service again because I can't beleive that a $500 bag isn't returnable after 1 use. I was denied again. They say it's their 'policy'. WTF kinda policy is that? They don't care at all about customer satisfactions. So yes I have a very expensive, cool looking, uncomfotable bag that I can't travel with as planned. I will never spend money with them again.
Weird. I’ve returned worn items before more than once but this was in person at the flagship store. Never had a problem. I’ve noticed a lot has changed with Filson the last couple years. Outsourcing, moving what little US manufacturing they have left to CA. More frequent sales, the outlet online, unfailing, etc…
Hey I just bought one that is in whipcord wool. It looks the same as this. what’s the difference in Forrestry cloth and whipcord?
I think they’re the same. It’s just a wool twill.
Curious about that seat!
I will make another update in the coming weeks about it!
nice rig
Sweet ride!
thanks for the vids man. looked at buying most or all of the items you've reviewed at one time or another
I had the same problem with similar products. The only real use that I have found is that they are good to wear around a campfire because they are spark resistant and they are abrasion resistant in case you need to go through brushes.
The vote came in. Tune in next time to find out what the board decided…
I vote for original paint. Clean it up and throw some clear on there. Purple is cool and always fun to see original shop stickers.
Thank you 💚💚💚
Honest review ... really like it... the jacket itself is outstanding. Thanks and cheers. 👍👍👍
Great review! It is nice to see a comparison between some of the different colors. My late grandfather gifted me a red one of these shirts for my 18th birthday, and around 15 years later, it's still one of my favorite shirts to wear. It has a uniquely tight weave that I haven't found in any other garment. It's made in El Salvadore though, whereas it seems like most are coming out of Sri Lanka these days, according to the internet. I'm interested in getting another one in dark heather gray for a more neutral look. That is, if the quality is still the same.
excellent, that was perfect. what I needed to see. you are changing lives with your videos
awesome review Jim, has it gotten softer since you've gotten it? Any issues with it so far? thanks!
This one was never as stiff as the first run supposedly was. It’s very comfortable and now that the weather has turned more spring like this is my go to when it’s not raining.
Thanks for video. What rim-size do you put on the ghost V2?
I gave the scooter to a friend. I don’t recall.
Looks like somebody has been spending some time on r/xbiking. 😂 Love a classic stumpjumper. Great bike!
Awesome! I have a lot more bike content in the works, including a complete build, tips and tricks and repair/maintenance. Thanks for watching!
I just interacted with Ralph, and he was wonderful to deal with. Great guy.
I’ve talked to Ralph many times and Alex a couple. Great people. The only reason I even bother to put things on UA-cam is because I liked my WW products so much.
Thanks for your reviews. Simple and straightforward. Much appreciated!
My pleasure!
I bought their neck gator years ago while I was waiting for them to make more all around jackets. It was the first weather wool product I've purchased. It's one of the first pieces of gear I pack when I go winter camping. It's such a versatile piece of clothing.
Solid, love the reviews. We have similar taste in quality outerwear so it's nice to see people reviewing the stuff I'm interested in.
The Apollo ghost looks identical to the dragon raptor
The jacket looks really good on you. You have the fit I want I am thinking of buying that jacket too, may I know your height and weight??
6’ 2.5” and 265lb
THANKS JIM!! --- You've got a lot more possibilities as a model than I do! --- We appreciate your interest in our products!!! --- Wear in great health! --- Ralph
A week after getting my watchcap, I bit the bullet and got my AAJ. no regrets there. One thought I had while watching is, what if weatherwool offered a "hotter" and "cooler" cap option with a looser and tighter knit. Down here in San Antonio, it's already too hot for mine but I still love to wear it because it looks amazing. If they had a cooler option I'd be able to wear it further into the year (and start wearing it earlier in the year)
THANK YOU! -- Ralph
I've tried applying Barbour Thornproof wax (the stuff in a tin that you melt and apply with a brush) to G-1000 with reasonable results. It's a softer and more classy finish than a bar wax and a little better at waterproofing the material. Since G-1000 is 2/3 polyester it's never going to achieve as good a result as 100% cotton since polyester is only going to get coated with wax rather than actually absorbing it.
This jacket can be impregnated with wax and it will be water and windproof. But it will breathe better than a membrane. And the fabric is much stronger. I didn't like Gore-Tex, there is no breath in it. G-1000 is good in light wind and rain. At the same time it breathes well. Gore tex can be worn in a storm. Unless you're working on a fishing boat in the North Sea, the fjall is a pretty good everyday jacket. And for comfort, you can put something under it, fleece, a puffer, a sweater.
Do you think they run big? I have two different pants from them and they are both huge.
I find the waist dead on and the legs through the thighs too tight.
@@JimLBon ok. not my experience at all. I wear 32x32 across the board and have a few 32s that fit too tight. Both of my fjallravens fit bigger than 34s
I’ve had some others comment on videos I’ve done with G1000 saying they find Fjallravens sizing all over the place, so it’s definitely not just you.
If More companies ran their companies like Ralph and his crew life would be so much BETTER! Honesty is definitely their POLICY!
After years of dealing with WW and you couldn’t torture an unkind word out of me. Absolutely love these guys.
Curious what you paid for second hand? There’s a pair I can pick up but seeing what’s fair to ask for basically new
I’m convinced these are 70.00 pants. Seems about right.
@@JimLBon thanks for the reply. That’s a bit disappointing considering they retail for double that. I suppose you pay for the name
I appreciate that you didn't knock the product, just openly stated that you don't quite understand the point of it. G1000 is a material that is kind of difficult to place in the 21st century. As you have stated, for every use case there is a fabric that performs better - Goretex, eVent etc. are more waterproof, down and synthetic insulations are warmer, softshells are mostly windproof and warmer. I think what G1000 excels at is versatility. In its native state it is extremely breathable and lightweight. If you want some water- and wind-repellency while maintaining reasonable breathability you can give it a coat of wax. If you want more of it, give it two coats. Or three. If you want to maintain breathability, leave out the areas under the arms that rarely get hit with rain anyway. If you are cold, layer a fleece underneath as you would with any synthetic hardshell. When summer approaches, just wash the wax away and the jacket is super light and breathable again. You can wear this thing all year around and customise it to your needs - the only thing it will never be suitable for is heavy rain, because waxing will never make it completely waterproof. I have Fjällräven trousers made of G1000 that I have worn hiking in hot and cold climates, in Africa and Scotland, in summer and winter, that I have climbed in and use for indoor and outdoor bouldering - and they are just great at everything! They are going on ten years, by the way, and still in great shape.
Thanks for the feedback. I find that G1000 is an excellent material for pants. I have since acquired another G1000 jacket that I like much better. I use it riding my bike.
My first time using these, I assumed the Mackinaw pants were a stand-alone piece for freezing weather. I couldn't have been more wrong. Went outside in 20-degree snowy weather. My thighs chafed. But with 400g long johns underneath, I pushed the pants to -30F. This was in Montana. The Mackinaw pants handle snow exceptionally. But the weave is sub-par that it doesn't insulate without heavy long johns.
I’ve discovered I’m not a huge fan of wool for pants in general. I think it’s a great pants material, but I’d rather wear G1000 pants with some long John bottoms. Just a personal taste kinda thing. It’s cool to hear from someone testing them outside my use case.
THANKS VERY MUCH, JIM!!!! ---- The reasons we took so long to return your jacket ... YES, we were really busy. Much more this season than ever before. But mainly, as we grow, we need to formalize the process by which we handle returns/service issues. We really don't have a formal procedure/administration for repairs, and that has to change!!! We really appreciate your kind words and of course we really appreciate that you have chosen to wear our wool!!! May you continue to wear the wool in good humor and great health!! --- Ralph
I’m going to hope for great health but good humor is absolutely necessary. Moreso now than ever. I’ll take the lack of a formal process for warranty repair as a statement of general quality and a lack of necessity. That’s just me reading between the lines. Be well! PS - Thanks again for the watch cap. That was completely unnecessary, very appreciated, and the majority of fault lies with me for waiting to send the jacket back at the worst possible time. The customer is NOT always right. I know better.
I like your frank, reasonable, attitude. Honestly surprised you are a blue Seattle resident ;)
Oh I’m a Seattle resident but that doesn’t mean I’m a specific color. Regardless, appreciate the comment and compliment.
I totally understand your point, I have one, the reason I bought mine was because my body temperature raised due to medication and I needed a jacket for spring/autumn for daily use going to the shops, in and out of the car, walking in the woods etc. Its light and breathable, plus if it does get wet it drys quick, the 35% cotton adds strength over an all polyester jacket. Also Fjallraven sizes are not for normal people, you have to have an athletic build, but its not just that the cut can be wrong too, really is trial and error, I recommend trying on before you buy.
Awesome jacket, hopefully Filson will bring it back.
Good looking jacket!
I have two pair of Filson Whipcord pants, bought in the '70's. They too are just a little under the stated size. Not nearly as heavy as the Mackinaw wool pants, but very tight weave and totally windproof. Wore them for years throughout a several months long hunting season as a packer and guide, still look like new. Never too hot or too cold. Too bad they don't still make them.
Agreed these are half a size smaller than the number size. These are very warm and i can only see wearing these practically in the snow or freezing weather
Yes. And to be honest, I think for the most part a good set of Woolpower 200 long John’s under your favorite pair of weather appropriate pants may make more sense.
It's kinda funny you talk about Jiu Jitsu. I told my wife you have a Randy Couture look to you. I do know, and listen to Jocko. You should find his Jiu Jitsu match between him and Jeff Monson (The Snow Monkey).
I’ve seen that match. Those guys are both animals.
compared to weatherwool pants??
No idea. Fabric for fabric the Weatherwool is superior in every way. I’ve never used WW pants so I can’t say anything about how they fit or the pocket layout.
I bought one of these when it first came out for $295! The first run used a thicker cone mill denim then the current run and could stand up on its own. It does break in with time and stretch a little bit like regular denim. My favorite jacket and paired with a matching guide flannel this thing gets all off the compliments. It is raw denim so if you put it in the washing machine the indigo will bleed off into everything else in the wash. This jacket will probably outlive me and will get a super nice patina with time that only comes with raw denim.
Thanks for the comment! I love mine. It’s a fantastic jacket
It's made for regulating the perfect body temperature in mild cool dry weather while hiking. And it does work for that and only that.
Thanks for the comment. I have a lot of wool garments that do that job so it’s likely I’d never even use any G1000 for that purpose and that I never would have found a use for it. That’s very useful information for anyone looking at a Sten.
@@JimLBon For me it depends, i use my mackinaw cruiser for hiking and it works perfect when it's cool and not super windy. When its cool but not cold but the wind makes the ''feel'' temperature a lot colder than it is then g1000 will work better than wool. G1000 isn't anything special other than just being good old polycotton but i find that sometimes you can't get better wind block/breathability balans than polycotton. Not even from the super expensive fabrics.
I just got back my cruiser from filson, super cool repairs. Straight utility jacket.
Jim, what is the denim jacket you are wearing in the video ?? PS - I'm an Origin guy, love the jeans,, wear mine daily, wish i could afford more of the GIs, (currently just have 1).
I have a video on the jacket. It’s a Filson denim short lined cruiser. I think you may still be able to get them. If not, call the Filson outlet in Eagen.
