  • Did I just ruin my Fjallraven Jacket well I hope not would be my answer to that. I always felt that my Fjallraven jacket no matter what I did was never waterproof enough, living in the UK rain is just part of living here so its nice to have your Fjallraven jacket as close to waterproof as you can get it.
In this video I try using Barbour wax to make it more waterproof and by watching the video to the end you will see what the results where hopefully not ruining my Fjallraven jacket.

Nice job, it worked a treat on my stubben rucksack and the barbour wax is cheaper than the fjallraven wax 👍🏻

It's a good thing that it's improved the water resistance because it's now permanent. G1000 is poly-cotton blend. The natural fibres will have soaked up the oil. That why Fjallraven use bees wax mixed with paraffin, so you maintain breathability.

What do you think happen with the paraffin and bees wax when you heat it up to disappear into the fabric? And even FR mention that if you put a lot of wax on you lose the breathability. The only differnce maybe is that you cant wash out the Barbour wax. I dont know what its made of do you?

I waxed my Fjallraven Smock quiet hard. and after a hour of medium rain i got wet on the inside. Cant say that i am a fan of how much work waxing is for the little extra time it gave me...

There's a reason that oiled and waxed cotton/canvas disappeared when real waterproof materials came out. A cheap walmart yellow slicker will outperform this day in day out.

How is the long term performance now that this vid is nearly a year old? I have a sarma anorak coming that I cant decide whether to use my barbour leftover wax or my homebrew beeswax/paraffin/turpentine mixture.

I've got the Fjallraven anorak n°8, and of corse I tried he Fjallraven wax and for me it is complete BS. The best wax for impregnating the material in my opinion is the Barbour wax ! 👍🏼

Do you still wax it with Barbour? How does it perform?
I got one yesterday and I can't pick between Greenland and Barbour. I am scared the Barbour will make me sweat inside.

That Barbour wax is dangerous if spilt near a naked flame, ask me how I know 🫣😗 had to smother with damp tea towel.

Maybe a silly question but but. Is a pair of jeans or cotton tee shirt with wax applied, any less waterproof than g-1000?

Your most likely find it’s about the same I’m sure the early Explorers used to add wax of some description to the outer clothing and I’m sure it was probably cotton.

I dont think so. I have tried it on a Dickies which is also 65/35 pollycotton but it didnt worked at all. I guess the fabric has to be tightly woven so the wax can fill or close the gaps better. I have heard from good success with 100% cotton on Moleskin trousers but I didnt tried that yet. Also the waxed Barbour jakets are 100% cotton but a differnet fabric than jeans or tshirt. Also more tightly woven. So its not a question of cotton rather fabric.
