- The #BMWi4M50 is the first #BMW M product to be completely electric. Built on the same platform as the 3/4-series gas counterpart, the new #BMWi4 starts life as the #4SeriesGranCoupe but plucks out the gas engine and replaces it with an 81.5 kWh battery pack with either single or dual electric motors. The #i4M50 is the first electric vehicle that #BMWM has touched and the result is a sleek looking electric sport sedan that offers up to 536 HP and up to 270 miles of range. We FINALLY got our hands on the new BMW i4 and it was definitely worth the wait. This is a REAL alternative to the Tesla Model 3 and while the range is slightly less, the looks, practicality, handling, ride, build quality, and acceleration match or better the Tesla in our eyes. Plus, it still qualifies for the $7,500 federal tax credit! We'd consider buying one ourselves if we were looking for an electric sport luxury sedan.

The range is not slight less..it is actually much less than Tesla M3. if you compare between the same 20"wheels on performance model, M3 has 315miles while i4 M50 has 227milles. The difference is almost 90 miles. That is not "slight" difference.

I love my Hyundai Elantra. It's not an EV, but it can sip fuel well enough to present a reasonable facsimile of an EV.
Since it's electric, I really wished they would have used a grill similar to the M240i.
The year 3025, cars a flying now. And BWM still has the same old 1990s steering wheel and logo... It will never change.
We will be extinct long before that.

Great review. In France they try the Edrive40 with 18 and 19 " wheels and they got 600km and more of range. In Norway they tried in snow this winter and the M50 was really good for charging and on the road.
Don't forget the radar and the camera are heating the snow in the winter.

I really hope they do this to the x3 line. I have a 2022 x3 M40i and I really wanted an electric or even plug in hybrid but it wasn’t available in the states for this year. I also love the idea of it being electric but not looking like a standard electric vehicle.

No power lift gate and the loss of other features due to chip shortage… but no drop in price. And now that BMW is moving toward paying monthly for heated seats, I don’t think a BMW is worth it.

Great looking car. They did a really good job on the appearance both inside and out. My apologies but I do have a couple of suggestions: Please get the dash screen integrated as I hate stick on computer screens. Also, we need buttons or knobs for standard systems like radio and climate so we can keep our eyes on the road. Of course, there is the range issue but that is just the state of technology. Cannot wait to see how far it really goes once people drive it like an M car. On the whole, nice job.

Alright Alright. Sooo this is what I'm noticing with the electric ⚡ cars/SUVs. Lack of 300 mile range, knobless climate/volume controls, and the missing that damn frunk 😩. Man these guys are not hearing us. Beautiful BMW tho, I see they are trying to get there customers comfortable moving over to electric by subtle changes I mean very subtle. Great review like always. The Euro EV's (e.g., iPace, E-tron) were all down on range to the Teslas, but they're fixing that as I speak. People forget that 90% of charging takes place conveniently at home.

This BWM is no where near as beautiful as an LC 500. This car is not even close. I'll take a KIA EV, which was designed from the ground up as an EV, over this gasoline- modified to- EV vehicle any day. I'm 'sorry not sorry' to borrow one of your phrases.

The most beautiful car to me is a Bentley Continental GT and there are so many more that looks a lot better to me than an LC. I haven't worked out how to turn off the 'adaptive' regen in normal driving. It's sometimes a little too aggressive, especially in town.
Put in an order on August 7th. Dealer calls me on August 9th. A buyer of the M50 like I ordered just 2 days earlier, backed out of his deal, the M50 arrived on the night of the 8th. I said YES, picked up the M50 on the 12th, "Life is Good". To all the negative comments about the grill, get a life. No one knows it an EV and compared to the plain jane appearance of Tesla and others it's way better looking from the Front, Side, and Rear. Don't compare to a SUV or Crossover, it's a Sedan.
30 to 40 minutes is no time. It’s an extra cup of coffee to enjoy for 10 more extra minutes:)!

Thank you! I really appreciate your reviews and unbiased opinions. I’m on the fence about getting this car, and found the lack of ventilated seat options on other leather colors annoying too. Waiting to see what Audi does with the new version of the A5/S5 (current ride), I think.
Todd…I feel you. My A5 was rear ended and considered a “total loss”. I was super depressed because I custom built it exactly how I wanted and it was even a manual. I did however just purchase an i4 M50. I got lucky buying the test drive vehicle instead of waiting a year and a half but I still get sentimental every-time I see an A5 on the road 😩

Why does every new car have the same style curved screens? It makes each car feel the same now.
This is what happens when automakers have no identity of their own or go hiring designers from other cooperations just for the sake of having a product worthy of competing. We need more originality like what’s found in Jaguar, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Tesla, Audi, Volvo, and Alfa Romeo. Many others are just copying what these companies are putting out and it’s _really_ boring.

Up to 301 miles of range on the eDrive40 is very competitive, and 270 miles for the i4 is still very good. Only trims with the rare 20" wheels like our tester drop it to 227 and we easily did around 250 miles in the real world.
Right! They could have created some long range vehicles that had reduced horsepower .
But as all manufacturers mindset is to put out low range and improve by 30 miles each time a new LCI is put out.
So expect every 4 years they will offer you just a bit more. Then they will get you to around 400 at a full charge , then tell you they implemented a new 80% charge recommended that again lowers your full charge/range.
No good if you need the rear seats. I will wait for a car they build on a dedicated Ev platform.

You mention the sound design but we can't hear it... maybe with a set of headphones it'd be easier but the talking, groaning, laughing throughout each launch & pull, puts it way on the backburner. Maybe a UA-cam short of a quiet launch if you still have the car?
What the production CO2 footprint?
Ventilated Front Seats ($350) are available in Black or Mocha (dark brown) Vernasca Leather ($1,500) only, but you will have to forfeit the Driver Lumbar Support which is included in the Premium Package. This "Black" is not the "Black with Blue Contrast Stitching" (also $1,500) that compliments the colors of the vehicles "M Sport" theme.
Even with a bad back living in Arizona it was a no brainer to give up the lumbar support for the ventilated seats since I wanted the mocha anyway. My m50 is crossing the Atlantic right now.

Great review but this is too much of a compromise. A 5,000lbs 4 series chassis cannot possibly perform like the ICE version that weight 3/4 of that. Better the all electric CUV from BMW as that is a full ground up design.

It’s nice to see BMW making a sub $70k EV sport hatchback “sedan” the only other sport sedan/hatchback EVs under that price are the Model 3 and Polestar 2. It’s refreshing to see a new sporty EV hatchback “sedan” available instead of all the EV crossovers we’ve been seeing.

Too bad BMW still depends on dealers to sell these. Polestar and Tesla have no mark ups and scammy dealerships to deal with. Seeing my local BMW dealer asking for $10k mark up made me throw up.

Your deliverly was flawless. Do you have a photographic memory? I could live with the cheaper 280 HP i4 edrive 35, but I don't like the nickel and diming to get ventilated seats, etc. Also, I will always opt for smaller wheels for better ride nd range than the 20"+ bozo wheels common on sports cars. There is always a compromise when an ICE vehicle is repurposed for electric, so a completely new platform needs to be developed to make the EV's even better. Back to der drawink boards, BMW.

That's why electric vehicle's are not practical enough to drop all your eggs in their basket. Completely new technology, not developed nearly enough to go all in. EV batteries loose 40% of their charge in cold weather. They are a great alternative, but as your only choice......no!
I just filled up my Honda Civic the other day and it gets 360 miles on a full tank. I just can't imagine spending all that money on a car with less range than a Honda Civic.

I think Lexus might be right there with BMW for ugliest grille/front end designs, but ultimately I agree.
The new grill looks better in-person. It doesn’t look good at all in videos or pictures.
Does anyone know how this car performs on snow & ice?
Great question Rex N Flex. BMW does offer an optional 19" wheel with all season run-flats for this vehicle. All other options are "Performance" or "High Performance" non run-flat tires which are warm weather/dry surface tires. If this is going to be a daily driver and you live in an area that is conducive to snow/ice, you will need a set of winter tires. Pirelli makes wide low profile winter tires for the high end luxury performance oriented car manufacturers but a set is going to cost $1500+.
Has anyone else got the option to add icon adaptive led headlights with laserlights? I ordered mine without. Do they really make the vehicle look different with them. This reviewer states his not sure if it’s worth the extra 1000 can any else testify to this? Was my decision to go without them a bad one?
I own an i4 M50 with the laserlights. They do make the car look different from the standpoint of the DRL shape being different. Also if you forgo the laserlights, you lose adaptive lighting altogether. In my opinion, until they fully unlock the potential of the laserlights in the US with the anti-dazzle feature, they really aren't worth the $1000. It just sucks that adaptive lighting isn't available with non-laser headlights.
Also, it really doesn’t make sense comparing every single EV to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Ford Mustang Mach-E because neither of these are luxury cars. They might have luxury car prices but they aren’t built with the same priorities in mind nor attention to details as most luxury marques. Now I would understand comparing the GV60 to the Ioniq 5 and EV6 because they’re essentially the same vehicles.

Good review, but this car won't smoke the M3 like stated in the video. The M3 is still faster, as it should be as it's over 1000lbs lighter and makes more horsepower.

I thought the I4 would be bigger, but looks more like it’s closer to the 3Series vs 5Series size. Guess, I should be waiting for i5 instead.
The 4 Series is simply the two-door version of the 3 Series cars. BMW puts their two-door variants in the even-numbered Series while the four-doors are odd-numbered.

Another masterpeace from german car producer. I hope this electric model will be more reliable than regular gas models. The exterior is modern and stylish especially with mormal door handles. I started to get used to this new grill style (it is a Hitles mustache who do not know). The interior is also top norch. The speed is better than in Tesla. The white colour is rich and splendid. The price is also a pure robbery but who cares. Life is a bitch if you are not rich so you should buy the Chevrolet Bolt EV in cry in the corner...
Wow.. the rear seat seems more cramp than model 3…. Ioniq 5 on the other hand has ample room at the back.

For such a heavy car, we see the interior space limitations of the retrofit ICE to EV. That rear space is brutal in size. Especially headroom, then you still have the ICE drivetrain tunnel… dumb dumb dumb…. It weighs more than the 2 SUV fast EV’s mentioned in the video…

It's grown on me - no never to me. I was thinking to buy this but whenever I looked at the grill, it just made me hate.
