The Mash and Drum I know exactly what you mean. My buddies look at me like I’m crazy as I pick the whiskey apart, but then they’re like “oh, hell yeah that’s in there...” You gonna go for the Bardstown taster opportunity?
The Mash and Drum you have a good ability to not let labels affect your perception of a whiskey, at least in my view. I see a lot of other whiskey tubers falling for flashy marketing. You on the other hand are willing to call it how it is
For those of you who have invested in EC18, but don't love it: I would recommend you try blending some with ECBP on a 2:1 ratio (EC18:ECBP). I'm currently doing this with some C919 and enjoying it. The end result is a much more interesting flavor profile (notes of oak, stone fruit and caramel) with a higher proof (around 105). Great review, and a great way for those new to bourbon to know definitively what oak smells and tastes like.
Do you know of any older age bourbons that are closer to full proof/cask strength? Would love to try something 15 year and above that hasn't been watered down to 100 or 90 proof...Thanks
Great honest recommendation. I think I have a better chance of sighting Elivs than I do of ever seeing a bottle of this on a local shelf, and at $130. There are so many great bourbons under $80, including ECBP.
Great review Jason. Saw this the other day at retail and passed. Tempting but still walked. I remembered it came in last on the 11K sub live stream. You also mentioned then how it fell short and now this review so now I am really glad I passed. Ended up getting a 2019 11yr Knob Creek store pick which is excellent and there is a store near me that has a Russell’s Reserve single barrel store pick from Camp Nelson warehouse F barreled 12/2009. Both bottles together less than the Elijah Craig 18. Can’t wait to get the Russell’s. If it is anything like my bottle I have now it is going to be great! Cheers! 🥃
Great review i like the 12 year and the BP Elijah Craig actually just bought a bottle of the Old Ezra 7 BP pretty oaky and dark cherry good stuff for $40.
I agree, I had high hopes for this when I tried it at a bar a couple years ago, especially with how much I love the 12yr BP. It was underwhelming, there was essentially very little finish once some of the sweetness was taken over by the oak and tannin's. I'm glad I tried this before buying a bottle.
Well I'm glad you took my advice before my video. LOL. I feel like this bourbon has a place for the bourbon drinker that likes oaky flavors without all the proof. But overall it falls flat and becomes very predictable after the first two good sips. Cheers!
This was my favorite bourbon back when it sold for around $50/bottle. Current shop price is $299 and I've since moved on because of it. That oak prominence in the flavor is what I always imagined might be the flavor difference between older and younger formulas in the bourbon industry.. Seems like younger generations prefer sweeter formulas. I personally find that 'sweet' can be cloying and that oak provides longer term pleasure and stability.
Like I said in the wrap up...for those who like a really oaky profile and not a killer proof, it has its place. But given the market today it just doesnt do enough. I still think its a good price for an 18 year old bourbon today. But too many good options out there and this should be way more than what it is. Cheers!
PalJoey 1957 I like oaky and vanilla notes but too woody takes away from it for me personally also I’ve noticed older stuff does better at higher proof
Glad you reviewed,, there are not many positive reviews in this bottle. My local store has it at retail every year and like you I have always passed. I feel it should be amazing but a shame it’s not. Cheers 🥃
I live in Ohio too and when I see u with a bottle like this I think “awesome, maybe it’s here in Ohio”! Glad I got the review before I make my weekly trip to liquor store to see what was delivered this week!! Thank u!!
I’m SOO glad you did this because I have a chance to get one for close to msrp and been putting it off because of price and now I can stop obsessing about it. Ain’t pulling the trigger till I try it. Thanks
I got to try a blind sample of this recently and I'm wondering if my palate isn't sensitive to oak, because oak barely sprang to mind. Instead, it was nice and pleasant, had some complexity and wonderful texture, but I wouldn't spend more than $65 for a bottle of it.
After tasting the Dickel 13 year BiB I am shy on chasing high age bourbon. I am sure there are some that are worth the price, but for me there are too many other great bourbons that won't kill the wallet. Great review as usual. Cheers!!
Great video and review! Some bourbons are just not for everyone's palate. Just keep reviewing them as you taste it. It why I am finally try and enjoying an Islay Scotch Bunnahabhain 12. Thanks Jason. Cheers!
I know folks hate hearing this sort of statement, but I really felt this bottle changed quite a bit over the course of a couple of months. Bought at xmas at Heaven Hill during a tour. It now has wonderful citrus zest notes on the nose and palate to balance out the oak/vanilla bomb. I'd love to see you try it in the fall to see if your opinion changes.
I tried an older release at my dads house a few days ago. I had the same exact experience as you. I thought maybe oxidation played a role but I guess not! Still a solid pour.
Thanks for the review. I’ll definitely work on trying this before buying. I too like my older bourbons at a higher proof. I think they bring so much more to the palate and I like the opportunity to choose the ideal proof for myself. When compared to the BP expression, I can definitely say I’d lean more towards that bottle of these two.
Just cracked a bottle and your review was spot on! For an 18 year bourbon, its great! For the market its demanding while being a 90 proof? I'll pass from now on. So many high quality cask strength options on the market today. Glad I got to try nonetheless
Great video: I appreciate your honest and detailed review. Good to know when the juice is not worth the money, especially with all the options out there. It does always seem to come down to subjective opinion so springing for this without trying it first is probably not the best thing. Thanks for helping the rest of us out. If you have any coins, I would love to buy one. Cheers!
Interesting review. I know you've reviewed the Rhetoric 25, too. Both have been in barrels for a long time, although the Rhetoric is 7 years older, so would expect it to have more oak than the EC18. Does the Rhetoric have significantly more oak? Between the two, which would you rather drink?
I actually liked the rhetoric 25 over this once it opened up. The EC 18 just got really flat and predictable after a few sips. The rhetoric 25 I don't think is worth the 200-250 price tag either but was more interesting than this IMO.
@@TheMashandDrum thanks! Yeah, the price tag on the Rhetoric is too high. And great point about the ECBP - I'd get more enjoyment out of three bottles of that over a couple bottles of the 18 year old, or one bottle of the Rhetoric. Thanks again for a good, honest review!
I see this one locked up in a few of my local stores at silly prices. Thankful for the review as once I hear thin consistency I'm out. Why would they bother to age it so long for only 90pr I wonder?
Wow, glad u posted, i didnt know it was 90 proof & i have a chance to pick this up, i think i’ll pass. 12 yr & toasted barrel r tuff to find here in SC. Thanks as always Jason!
In your opinion, would you say there are a LOT of other bourbons that you can get for equal to or less than ~$120? Every review I see for the EC18 is that it's overall disappointing. ECBP is where I'm at with EC products, soooo damn good.
I would agree. With todays bourbon market there are ALOT of bourbons that hit the market at 100 dollars or higher but not many that have this high of an age statement so I will give that to EC 18. I feel like when HH decides to bottle this at 90 proof, those barrels have to be special to warrant the price and age statement. The EC BP is still the best value bourbon they make and your right...there are alot of bourbons I'd rather have than this that are less money and more available.
Just a thought, in having both the EC18 and the EC barrel proof.... blending them together at home would give you a bourbon at around 110 proof...not too hot, not too watered down.... and not too oaky. Will have to give that a try and see if a blended combo is the way to go here.
My local craft liquor in Southern California has a few bottles of Elijah Craig 18yr for about $190. I've always wondered if it was worth it but based on this video and what I've heard from other people, I'm gonna pass on buying it. I'll just wait to meet someone that has a bottle so I can mooch from it :)
I keep a bottle on hand mostly just because it's 18yo. It serves as a benchmark to compare other ages to show what time does during maturation. It's don't dislike it, but it's certainly not my favorite. It's just nice to be able to educate your palate and that of your friends on what age "tastes" like. Given that GTS is usually around 15yo and isn't nearly as oaky as EC18, perhaps EC18 needs more proof? or HH needs better barrel management. Don't know.
I wonder if EC 18 SiB would be better at say even 94 proof like the standard Small Batch? I’ve never tried it & only seen it once locally, but it was already reserved for someone.
Nice review Jason. I had a glass at a bar in the last year and a half and I remember the oak notes being very up front. I appreciated that you took a number of sips to see how it changed for you. A bar is not the best place to seriously access a whiskey, but it seems that your experience and mine are very close. I agree that a higher ABV may enhance the experience of the EC 18 SB. Stay Safe: Mike
Hey Jason! As always great review 👌 this is one that I've only seen behind beautiful displays and never at MSRP, it's sad the flavor didn't work for you on something that should have been a home run *every time (agree that the 90 proof is complete let down) but 18 years Elijah Craig... Again, that should have been enough for it to be an epic pour. I hope to try it somewhere as soon as this is over & can get out to see if the oak works for me. Again thanks for the quality content, keep it coming, Jason! Stay safe and cheers!✨🥃🍕🦉

Awesome review Jay!!! Will try if the opportunity come. But for some reason I am stuck on ECBP C919...that is some awesome juice😄 Thanks for all you do!!!
Thanks Archie! Its hard to go to this after the greatness of the ECBP but the lower proof and high age is right for someones palate. I just think there should be more flavor here. Cheers!
Congrats on 13k. Seems like 10k was just a month ago. Regarding the 18yo, I had a pour at a restaurant and it fell quite flat for me. Strangely smelled blue cheese (love blue cheese, just not in my bourbon). Maybe the bottle had been opened for a long time. Either way, I'll stick to younger barrel proof stuff. Cheers Jason 🥃
There is 2 here I found in nw FL at a place for 200. I don’t think I would buy it for that. I picked up a regular bottle of four roses for 26 would probably buy that anything over anything else and I have done blanton’s,Elijah Craig small, Elijah Craig toasted, etc. I prefer a low proof bourbon without a lot of oak on the nose. But that’s just my taste.
Great review. I chickened out on keeping this, despite finding it at a Costco for $135. Just couldn't justify the price for something that's not at least barrel proofed. Then again 18 year...😖
@Robert Blackford yea, I mean I wouldn't correct my friends, but my friends don't have careers drinking whiskey on camera...the least you could do if you want your opinion on 18 year old whiskey to be taken seriously is demonstrate the most basic level of decorum while tasting it
Great honest review. Just because it's old or expensive it doesn't mean it's great.
Your tasting notes are special, man. Any time I wonder what it is I’m getting on a dram, I just have you tell me. #1 palate in whiskey tube.
Thanks Chris. It seems to be getting more sensitive over time and picking up new things as whiskey opens up as become a fun challenge. Cheers buddy!

Bummer 🤦♂️ since it’s limited they might as well just bottle it at 100+ let people water it down themselves. Cheers bro 🥃
Agree buddy.
Thanks Jason, what do you think of Rye's- I'm looking for a bottle of Willet.???
Yeah Willet 4 years are really good. I love Pikesville Rye, Old Forester Rye and High West Double Rye. Those are my usual go -to bottles.

Thank you for your honest and truthful review! 90 proof is way to low. My local liquor store is charging $250.00. Ridiculous for 90 proof
Feel the same about knob 15. They water them down to lower the proof it falls flat.
Great review i like the 12 year and the BP Elijah Craig actually just bought a bottle of the Old Ezra 7 BP pretty oaky and dark cherry good stuff for $40.

I can't believe i found this yesterday.....tha price wasn't too bad either
Think you hit the nail on the head why it’s at 90 proof. Heck the standard small batch is 94!
Another win for the younger cheaper stronger.
Love this one. Elijah Craig is in my top 5 all around.
Quality of your videos has gone way up. Nice work, man.
Thanks man!!
Picked up that Old Forester 1920. Don't know if I will regret not picking up the Knob Creek 12 yr old.
Oh you won't regret it at all. The 12 is good. But I would still take the OF 1920. Cheers and enjoy

It doesnt feel that way the first couple sips so I was hopeful....but the third sip and beyond the oak does take over and it becomes boring.
@@TheMashandDrum And not to mention it's only 90 proof. That just seems odd.
Great review. I chickened out on keeping this, despite finding it at a Costco for $135. Just couldn't justify the price for something that's not at least barrel proofed. Then again 18 year...😖
Yeah thats the issue I had...Its actually a good value at 18 years old but the flavor doesnt hold up.
I got mine for 229....
Make this year statement barrel proof and then we are talking.
A lot of oak you say. It’s a no for me, Dawg...
Thank you for the review but... HARD PASS
Pretty much mentioned every smell possible 🤦♂️
You hold your glass like a troglodyte. Otherwise good review
LOL. Thats a first. Sure! Thanks.
@Robert Blackford yea, I mean I wouldn't correct my friends, but my friends don't have careers drinking whiskey on camera...the least you could do if you want your opinion on 18 year old whiskey to be taken seriously is demonstrate the most basic level of decorum while tasting it
