Conversely, people give the SKX too much love. Maybe 30 years ago it was a viable option but if I want a $300-ish dive watch today, the SKX is waaay down my list near the bottom.

If you know about better watches for the money, why fall into the horological trap of buying something for "heritage" and the like? It's a mass produced diver that got enough hype to keep the price up for a long enough without having to raise the spec. So happy with my Loreo. It may not be exactly original but it feels like it was made for me. Two Paganis are getting about zero wrist time. Perhaps I should just sell them.
I also am a huge fan of the Orient Kamasu. I like the fact there is upgrades done on it for example sapphire crystal,solid end links. My Orient Mako II 's only issue is the holow end links. I am a rough guy and they bend.
I just bought the Kamasu after a while of really wanting a Orient watch. Gotta say I’m so impressed with the quality. Beautifully finished , sapphire crystal and very accurate. All for less than £200 ! One these become more popular the price will go up just like the old SKX
Citizen mechanical dive watches become my favorite brand, and love that 8 o'clock crown design, as it gets better protection and comfortable to wear when you do the push up.
Oh yes and if you want to correct time or something then you have to take of watch. This watch can be good only for people which wear it on the right hand.

Hi Oleg. nice one you got there. Citizen always has been a little brother to Seiko and didn't get much reviews or loves from consumers, but since Seiko's pricing is going up on most models, perhaps, Citizen can capture the void in low/mid end of watches. No matter what, Citizen makes very solid watches and they should get some more credits than they have been getting. I think this Pro Master Asia version at $240 is a good proposition and I would not mind picking myself one. thanks for the review, Oleg.

Nice review. I actually got a different version of this from last year, the NY-0080. Basically this watch but with no gold and on a rubber strap. Mine is aligned perfectly, something I cannot say about my SKX007J1. A comparison of the 2 would be interesting. Personally, If someone is in the market for an SKX replacement, I would suggest the Seiko Turtle, you can still find some new versions for under $300 US.

Regarding the views expressed about water proofing to 200 meters: I got $1000 300 meter water resistant Hamilton "navy diver" which I bought brand new from an authorised dealer - first time I wore it to the beach and "dived" to a depth of about 2 ft. a few yards from the shore it leaked in water. I've been swimming wearing my 200€ Citizen Promaster and never had a problem, absolutely bomb-proof.
I have this watch with silver hands as opposed to the gilt and it’s a great alternative to the SKX. The one I have though has the rubber dive strap. I wish it had the metal bracelet. It does look great on a NATO strap. Get them while they last because they go quickly!
I love mine on the strap with the navy dive tables kinda cheesy but being a former police search and rescue diver many moons ago it’s kinda nastolgic for me
I must say personally I'm a little upset with the new Seiko 5 line. The value for money just isn't there compared to the SKX. Especially with the price hike. Just picked up a second Orient watch and I'm still amazed with the quality might have to give this a look now too!

Finally, my Fugu arrived yesterday afternoon! I'm really excited, I found the dial very beautiful, a little too flashy ... in relation to the size (42mm) I thought it was the right size, I have a thin wrist, (about seven) and big watches don't suit me. The bracelet was ok, maybe a little thin, one thing that caught my attention was the weight, a little heavy for my taste, I will avoid going to the gym with him !!!!
The Citizen Eco-Drive is a fantastic line!!! I have many over the years and never had any issues. Never had an auto but I’m sure it would be a great watch for the money.
Nice review Oleg, appreciate you suggesting some SKX alternatives. I however feel this watch is a step back. For the price, it offers all the defects of Seiko, and some of its own. I have a good old Seiko diver 6309, and back in those days there were no chapter ring alignment issues, and they had great sturdy movements. I also have a Seiko turtle blue lagoon,but dislike the bezel action. Anyway, why should I buy a pro master and accept a stamped clasp, non hacking movement, misaligned chapter ring, mediocre lume, and all the other undesirable attributes of this watch offers? More and more I'm looking to the micro brands for the solution. Unfortunately I don't like any of the orient diver options either. The horizon has really changed in the last few years for this style of watch, and the Seiko, Orient, Citizen options just don't do it for me anymore.
This model is a variation of the ny0040 (I do like the crown on the new one), it’s always been the alternative to the skx, I think the lack of aftermarket for it has been one of the reasons for it not being more popular. Don’t forget these were given 500m depth rating when issued to the Italian navy so performance is not an issue. The crown position is there to stop it digging in..think which end of your arm is you wrist, it does make it more awkward to use though.
Honestly, I feel like the Citizen ProMaster eco-drive would have been a better selection than the automatic, but then I guess it would not have been considered an alternative to the SKX since it’s not automatic. I love my blue eco-drive, but it’s just not my SKX011j! I adore (worship) that watch! Good review👍🏼

I had a very bad experience with Citizen solar power years ago . It died when all guarantees expired. I was told that this kind of movement does not work well in Europe cos l have to wear short sleeves. But when l was buying it l was told that watch is expected to work 20 years and a mechanism is expected to work even 25 years.

So good in fact while watching I thought, “Gee this looks familiar...” Looked at my wrist & voila I’m actually wearing mine!🤣 I had a beater Lorus on today at work. Great review. Nice enough piece, an automatic diver is always interesting, though I don't think I would ever buy an automatic Citizen - the company is better known for its "eco drive" range of solar powered watches. I can vouch for the 200 m Promaster Diver - bought it 2 years ago and used in pools and sea, fantastic watch.

Has anyone from Seiko said the 5 is a replacement for the SKX? I don't understand, was the 5 a replacement for anything else that looks similar the moment it stops being made? 5 has always been the cheapest seiko automatic well before SKX was invented. I am in the market for an everyday diver watch and this is very tempting. I have been looking at Seiko, Orient and Citizen. I want automatic movement, no Submariner homage, not larger than 42 and at the right price. So this is right up my alley. Negatives for me are: A. The day window (but it is common amongst those brands) yet being color matched to the face is almost redeeming. B. The bezel without all around gnarling C. That bracelet. And if I may add a final thought please be gentle with your replies. Here it goes: I never warmed up to the SKX and moreover the new 5 looks fine to me, being one of my top three choices so far. OK let it rip....

I have 2 of them,and everybody loves them...Don't buy the bracelet version,buy the cheaper version with the silicon strap and later you can find a good bracelet or a nice nato strap...

Great review Oleg. I don't know why Citizen uses the Miyota 80xx movement in their automatic watches when they make the 90xx (an excellent high beat movement). I don't know that there is a replacement of the SKX, because for me the appeal is its moddablity.

All the negative's you talked about this watch can be said about the SKX. Well at least the bezel aligns with the indicators.... hahaha! There quite a few different dials colors and style available so there is one for everybody.
Just got a padi turtle. Wanted to get an skx but the money for it is too much. new 5 replacement is not an skx..to much for what it is... and still loving my ray 2
The real question is why are these limited edition and JDM? Why aren't Citizen making an updated and improved JP2000 Aqualand to compete with the Arnie reissue and making an updated NY0040 as their staple model in all markets to fill in for the SKX. Why is their cool new titanium gmt diver JDM only? I love Citizen but it seems like they're ok with just being ok when they have the ability to be great.
Citizen is a great brand and the watch is cool on its own, but you cannot replace the charm of an SKX, or the modding possibilities. If you talk about only functions, then of course, there are plenty of other watches out there with same functions and maybe even better quality around the same price like an SKX.
I bought a Citizen Promaster w/Ecodrive for $88 during Black Friday. It's a way better value than any Seiko diver. The one being reviewed is nice but without hacking, it's not for me. For the price that you're paying, it should have both hand winding and hacking.
Citizen does have some decent watches. Their bracelets are junking at this price point. Orient makes some divers to consider. I do not think they are ISO certified though. I could be wrong, they make so many. I hope someone reviews the islander watch from longislandwatch.com Pretty close to sks with better movement and sapphire for 300.00 hand winds and hacks.
brian buchert It was repaired once under warranty, not sure what the problem was, recently the crown stem broke off and my jeweler says it’s not worth the repair. It also generally looks really worn and ugly, after pretty light use. I have never had issues with other watches, even really cheap ones.
jon louis you must have gotten a lemon my eco drive pro master diver has been worn a lot and it runs like a champ I guess all companies can produce a lemon ever now and then I love citizen but if your situation happened to me I would be upset too!
Oleg great review on this citizens watch . For Christmas my brother gifted me a Seiko skx009 so having that in my collection is making me want this Citizen watch . It’s tempting and definitely a worthy automatic diver for sure 👍🏻
Seiko is not what they used to be. They are becoming higher-end and discontinuing the classic affordable watches. This infuriates me. Citizen does make great watches like this one and many more, deserving more attention.
For some reason Citizen's quality control has been off lately. Got a promaster tough and the second hand doesn't hit the markers and got a diver with some huge blemishes on the dial. I've never had a bad citizen until this last year. Still great watches and great review!
I know it's a working watch , but , I just find it ugly.. don't like the bezel with smooth spaces and don't like the indices. I don't think the new Seiko 5 is a replacement for the skx , I think that's more the Prospex divers line. Seiko 5 series have already had diver style watches like the 55 fathoms and others , the new Seiko 5 sports seems to me a continuation of that.
The huge Vostok seller on eBay seems to have ripped me off and several other. I got my money back through Paypal and the seller has no listings anymore. Now I'm without a Vostok...still! I was looking forward to my Komandirskie! Any fate fellows here? :)

Orient Kamasu is the spiritual successor to the SKX for me.

I actually like the rubber dive strap too..I’ll wear that when I’m dressed casually. It not as good a look for when I’m in work clothes, IMO.

More and more I'm looking to the micro brands for the solution. Unfortunately I don't like any of the orient diver options either. The horizon has really changed in the last few years for this style of watch, and the Seiko, Orient, Citizen options just don't do it for me anymore.

My 3 Citizen ECO solar watches are still working fine. One is more than 10 yrs old, the other two are 3 and 2 years old.

I love that citizen uses 20mm lug width, it makes the watch wear smaller, unlike the Seiko skx

Citizen is a great brand and the watch is cool on its own, but you cannot replace the charm of an SKX, or the modding possibilities. If you talk about only functions, then of course, there are plenty of other watches out there with same functions and maybe even better quality around the same price like an SKX.
I bought a Citizen Promaster w/Ecodrive for $88 during Black Friday. It's a way better value than any Seiko diver. The one being reviewed is nice but without hacking, it's not for me. For the price that you're paying, it should have both hand winding and hacking.
I'd love to see a comparison between the two Oleg.
Perhaps it's just me, but the indices are a standout feature. They remind me of the 62MAS.

Yeah the rotor noise isn't too bad.
It is a nice watch but it lacks the charm of the Seiko SKX.
I would like to say the Fugu is BETTER than the SKX.
The alignment alone makes it a better watch all time. Seiko quality control is horrendous

Citizen does have some decent watches. Their bracelets are junking at this price point. Orient makes some divers to consider. I do not think they are ISO certified though. I could be wrong, they make so many. I hope someone reviews the islander watch from longislandwatch.com Pretty close to sks with better movement and sapphire for 300.00 hand winds and hacks.
I should check out the SKX from long island watches. Seems like it's getting a lot of buzz.

jon louis what went wrong with your citizen if you don’t mind me asking?
brian buchert It was repaired once under warranty, not sure what the problem was, recently the crown stem broke off and my jeweler says it’s not worth the repair. It also generally looks really worn and ugly, after pretty light use. I have never had issues with other watches, even really cheap ones.
jon louis you must have gotten a lemon my eco drive pro master diver has been worn a lot and it runs like a champ I guess all companies can produce a lemon ever now and then I love citizen but if your situation happened to me I would be upset too!
Oleg great review on this citizens watch . For Christmas my brother gifted me a Seiko skx009 so having that in my collection is making me want this Citizen watch . It’s tempting and definitely a worthy automatic diver for sure 👍🏻

Seiko is not what they used to be. They are becoming higher-end and discontinuing the classic affordable watches. This infuriates me. Citizen does make great watches like this one and many more, deserving more attention.

For some reason Citizen's quality control has been off lately. Got a promaster tough and the second hand doesn't hit the markers and got a diver with some huge blemishes on the dial. I've never had a bad citizen until this last year. Still great watches and great review!
I know it's a working watch , but , I just find it ugly.. don't like the bezel with smooth spaces and don't like the indices.
I don't think the new Seiko 5 is a replacement for the skx , I think that's more the Prospex divers line. Seiko 5 series have already had diver style watches like the 55 fathoms and others , the new Seiko 5 sports seems to me a continuation of that.

This and the Orient Kamasu are definitely better than the SKX.
I like Orient Kamasu, would be nice to get one, but you do not get the point of an SKX, it is like a retro icon, a mod monster, with tons of fun. The Orient and this do not have the fun factor like an SKX had...
