I just bought this watch and I can't be more impressed with it. I'm a Diver, Kayaker, Sailor and Water Skier and the crown placement is perfect for wrist articulation. The bezel is mechanically precise, functional and aesthetically pleasing. It has a very robust yet elegant design that gives it tremendous wrist presence. The inky black dial, framed day-date window and the slight spark of red make it visually striking from a distance - mechanically rugged, slightly understated but incredibly handsome. Like a new world red zinfandel, it can be paired with pizza or filet mignon. A gentleman's watch for any occasion.
I'm a citizen fan boy. These watches are beasts. They work, are accurate, are comfortable, and are strap monsters. Blue lume is fantastic and lasts all night for my older eyes.
I have owned two and then i now have my third. I have had three xks's too. I love em both. Being windable just steals it for me and its gorgeous. Own both you cant go wrong
I have mine on a Joseph Bonnie grey tropic strap. The dial is like a lake of ink, very striking in real life. Great lume, everything aligns as it should, windable, hackable, and a lot more precise than the old skx or any new 4R36. It also wears quite a bit smaller than the nominal diameter. I couldn't be any happier with it.
It Looks like that it is the best overall watch for Work, Dressing, Sports and Diving at the same time, at an incredible affordable price of around 200 US $ from Citizen !
A bit advantage for the Citizen in my opinion over the Skx is that on the Citizen there is a small bit of lume material at the 3 o clock position. That is a big + for me.
The Date/Day being in black w/white numbers is pure CLASS! I love that and because of it I think I would rather have this watch. Only for Americans is an “underpants” it is a unique logo at 12oclock
Great watch. Punches away above it weight. I have mine on a NATO. More recent models have hacking but I am still happy with the original. They are also available with the eco drive movement. The Italian Marina Militare tested the Promaster's water resistance, 500m!
I have a promaster diver automatic , serial number , 8203- 824393 HSF. GN-4-S C32850 Japan. Made in 1993. Works perfectly keeps time with my Tissot Visodate and my Stowa TO2. You need the tight bezel for acurate diving times. You don't want it moving while your diving. This watch was standard issue to British and Italian SF.
I have and love this watch. You told me about the underpants thing and I completely forgot about it. It still looks like a great watch to me. And, it runs and runs and runs. I love this my 0040.
awesome watch. got a nice deal paying 180 euros. after 1-2 months mine gained 3,6 sec per day n didn't get worse ever since!!! my sub-c does - 1,6 sec !!! considering I payed 43 times as much for my sub I guess I can recommend the citizen! by any means one of the better watches I own
I just bought this watch w/ the SS bracelet, online for $190 US. The site was Gioiapura from Italy and they gave free UPS shipping and got it to Nevada in 6 days. Beautiful watch and a certified diver with a great movement. I can't wait to get underwater with it!
If I could only pick between this or the SKX, I think this NY0040 would squeak by. I've heard of limitations on servicing the movement in the future, but that really doesn't concern me as I have many watches. Execellent review, as always. Tomorrow will arrive my NY040. Already have an NY0080 full lume and a SKX. The only thing in what IMHO Seiko beats Citizen is in the use of white colour on the seconds hand that makes it more visible. Apart from that NY all way. Love the matching black window for day and date! Also prefer a 60 clics bezel...I can wait 30 seconds to mark the begining of my dive.
I love my SKX but the quality of the Citizen is much much better. Try manipulating an skx bezel under the water and it's annoying. The citizen just works so much better from a practical standpoint.
I have both the Seiko and the Citizen. The Citizen is much better made and the latest version is now hackable. As for the underpants? just think swimming trunks as its a divers watch : )
This is not the original bracelet it lacks Citizen branding and the ratcheting diver's extension. If the guy from ebay claimed it to be original you got scammed.
The original is of even lower quality with folded links. Most owners of the ny0040 prefer this one with solid links, and push release button which the oem doesn't have.
yep. i have it with the original bracelet with dive extension. it does the job. folded links don't bother me. i only learnt thats a bad thing after owning it for 6 years...
Definitely one of those watches that's a pleasure to own, I have two , the other one is with the pale green dial, that one has stayed in the box and never came out! nice video!
For anyone interested in getting a bracelet for this, the Seiko Monster bracelet seems to fit this watch perfectly as featured in one of the reviews of this watch here on UA-cam. For $60 is a better choice and higher quality than the OEM Citizen bracelet with folded links and hollow end links.
I've always liked Seiko and Citizen, and in the 2000s was always looking at the competing options in their divers. This one looks great. I just wish Citizen would settle on an iconic signature diver design that doesn't look like an industrial machine part.
I bought one ☝️, got the kit it came with the black strap & stainless strap , absolutely chuffed with it .... very hard to find them with the stainless strap ... I think it looks better than the SKX ... Only thing is the day / date is a bit small ... but can forgive it .. looks more expensive than it actually is , had the money to buy more expensive watch couldn’t justify it ... had pro master watch over 25 years as an every day watch .. €200 in Europe

Just bought the blue dialled version of this watch. Great piece for the money, but have to say the lume is really disappointing. It charges quickly and is really bright but dims so fast. In about 20 mins it's vanished.

I bought the Citizen recently. I like the watch, but when you give it a shake you can really hear the mechanism inside rattling. Is that the case with them generally-has anyone else had this experience?

Yes. The initial sound you hear is the winding rotor or "pendulum" letting gravity settle it into position. Then the tick tock being the automatic movement itself.
I wonder, have you ever met a long term reviews of this watch? I have found them on Amazon and feedbacks did confuse me. There are some statements about poor QC and random turning to a brick after 3-4yr of use. Especially freshly manufactured ones watches.
I have had two of these, the like dial and the black dial as in this review. They are both still fantastic after years of wear. The only negative I have had is I had a pretty big scratch on the lume dial one and replaced with a domed sapphire. (Had the same issue with my SKX which I also replaced with sapphire). I find the Miyota movement is much more accurate then the Seiko, plus hand winds. The watch doesn't look smaller on the wrist but wears much more comforatbly. Makes the SKX feel like a big lump.
Had the full lumed version. Great watch. To me the marker is more like the Transformers Decepticon logo. Never really thought of it as underpants and yes I cant unsee it now. Same as when I was pointed out that the speedmaster's marker looking like a dick & the sumo looking like a pussy.
I have the Orient Ray Raven Version 1 which is a great watch but personally prefer the Citizen. It has great character , very comfortable to wear, great timekeeping and the 8 o clock crown gives it a different look to other divers.
Seiko made poor quality watches. you have to wear it every day to know that. time keeping is out. poor water resistant. Seiko is rubbish to be frank with you.
Hand winds,but not hackable. Why is hacking so important? You have to time a mission to blow up a reactor or something? Better stick to quartz, because hacking an automatic is pretty silly given how rare it is to find one that keeps time better than +/- 5 or more seconds a day.
Yeah, any mechanical watch is by definition obsolete, winding or not. Nobody really buys mechanical for their accuracy or functions. Any 10 dollar quartz watch is better in that regard.

Fantastic watch which is much better than the skx. Seiko is simply riding on their name recognition but quality is not on par with Citizen.

One of my favorite watches of all time. I like my SKX but I think these are better. I have 2 (lume dial and black).
Underpants at the 12… looks more like a creative ‘V’… or some kind of pointer… but your version is entertaining!

The Miyota rotor noise is audible for sure. Very normal, they are great movements of f you can over look the noise.
