  • My Intellijel 4U 62hp case finally came in and I cannibalized some modules from my main cases to get it up and running in a not-quite-final form. I must say that in this configuration it doesn't feel like I am giving up much over my main setup.
    I'm running this off of a 50,000mAh battery and it seems like I'll get many hours out of it. I particularly like just putting my headphones directly in and jamming wherever- then if it feels like the patch is going somewhere, I can plug it into my mobile recording setup to put something on tape.
    I'll likely share some thoughts about the case once I have more time on it but so far I am quite pleased.
    This patch uses Plaits and Quadrax as voices. Quadrax is run through Disting MkIV's tape delay which I have not messed with much but found to be really impressive. It can build up a nice drone but it's oddly controlled and doesn't go into feedback as soon as expected.

    This video singlehandedly is going to get me into hardware synths, specifically this little case. Your sound is exactly like my sound and I kept running into all these techno fartboxes using this case asking "ok but can I make chill expressive patches?" You showed me the sounds I make on software can be done with this small form factor so thanks for that and the tranquil vibes!

      Thanks man- this is really nice to hear. TBH, I think my sound has more to do with how I patch things and what catches my ear as I’m playing around. You could put this same setup in someone else’s hands and they could go full techno with it. It’s pretty wild just how flexible these instruments are.
      If you’re starting from nothing, I would actually suggest considering the larger 104hp Intellijel case so you aren’t limited to using such small modules. Sometimes it’s cheaper to get larger modules that take up more room. And no big deal if you have blank space. But get whatever makes you excited to play- it’s all good.

      If you just want to hit the ground running, I’d suggest a semi-modular like Intellijel Cascadia or the Make Noise options. Otherwise, get a small case and spend some time researching what modules appeal to you.

      It comes with a bunch of adapters for the DC output which should work with most cases. I also power a MOTU M2 and iPad or iPhone + USB hub off this.

  • @NealCaen

    Would it be weird if i copied your setup? Im new to modular and finding out the exact modules to produce these type of mellow sounds in the vast sea of modules is extremely daunting, but the thought of just being able to pick up the case full of the modules and know that these will take me where i want to go would be similar to the first time i picked up the guitar... the instrument is there now its up to me to learn the music i want to play.

    • @ModularBeat
      @ModularBeat  6 місяців тому +1

      Not weird at all BUT I wouldn't recommend it for 2 reasons:
      1. It's really tough building a setup this small without making a lot of compromises in terms of usability. I recommend folks new to eurorack get a larger case so they can experiment with larger modules (which are not necessarily more expensive and sometimes nicer to work with). I sometimes like working with small focused setups like this but I also have larger cases.
      2. You'll miss out on a large part of the fun of modular synths which is learning about all the stuff and building something that inspires you. You can start out with maybe 4 modules, learn those… then decide where to go from there. You don’t have to build the entire setup at once!
      As for my “mellow” sound… that just seems like what comes out no matter what modules I am working with, haha! I’d say my sound is like 20% from the equipment and 80% just down to my personal taste. I think no matter what specific modules you get, you’ll have the ability to make sounds like this.
      Anyway- I know it’s intimidating but don’t give up on it. Happy to give some pointers if you need help.

    • @NealCaen
      @NealCaen 6 місяців тому +1

      @@ModularBeatso when you say you’d recommend 4 modules, what would you say should be the job of each individual module of those 4? Or maybe you could recommend me some? For reference I really like tape stuff so I forsure would love something like a strymon magneto!

    • @ModularBeat
      @ModularBeat  6 місяців тому +1

      That's a good question. I think a *complete* setup for me would include:
      1. Some sort of voice/VCO
      2. Sequencer or controller
      3. Basic utilities: mixer/VCA/attenuverter
      4. A modulation source
      5. Effects (reverb, delay, etc…)
      There are so many ways to get there. Looking at some stuff in front of me…
      Option A
      1. Quadrax: great modulation source and can work as a voice as well. Check out my “Quadrax Minimalist Patch” videos
      2. Marbles: nice generative sequencer for “ambient” stuff, but anything will do
      3. Veils: my favorite VCA and mixer
      4. FX Aid (or any effect, really)
      Option B
      1. Plaits: voice (includes an internal sort of VCA)
      2. Pamela’s Pro Workout: clock/modulator/sequencer
      3. Triplatt as a mixer
      4. Reverb/delay/granular synth of your choice
      I kinda like the challenge of making patches without a certain type of module- or using a module in an unexpected way. It’s okay if you don’t have every possibility accounted for!
      Magneto sounds great, FWIW, but since I don't really use it as a tape looper but as more of a delay, I tend to use Mimeophon more. Can't go wrong with anything along those lines though.

    What was the cost of this rig

    • @ModularBeat
      @ModularBeat  7 місяців тому

      No idea. I’d suggest mocking up something at modulargrid.net to get an idea. In general, these small setups cost more per HP/inch than larger systems because smaller modules are not necessarily cheaper and I really packed them in here.
