The diary of a boy and his synthesizer
I've been saving K1 for a rainy day. It's here.
In Dreamsequence 1.4 you'll be able to hold down key 1 to accumulate edits and then release the key to fire them all at once. I've been saving that lil key for almost 2 years and it was worth it. Really happy with this feature.

Okay I worked out some of the bugs were causing chaos in the last video. Thought I'd try some partial chaos this time but I'd say it's only a partial success. Still trying to figure out how to use this thing. Patch notes: Using both seqs to sequence Ableton drums. One seq, containing the kick, is somewhat stable at first while the other one gets randomized rotation/shift/sequence length at regu...

So I just had a thought: "hey I got a second instance of Seq going and it's polyphonic so I guess it can do drums now?". I was thinking maybe I could have a little *bip bip bop* to accompany my nursery rhymes but NO that was not happening. I'm just uploading my first completely bewildering, awful, and fucking awesome session with this thing before I can even go back and watch it to piece togeth...

A massive spring storm rolled through and started knocking down branches and causing power issues so I unplugged all my stuff and sat there for a bit, bored, before I remembered the marvel of batteries. So I plugged this little dude in and started to play with it. Just as soon as it arrived, the storm passed. So, here you go. A little vignette done in about 10 minutes. Oh, the exciting thing is...

Demo of some new features I'm thinking about adding in Dreamsequence 1.4. Probably not that interesting unless you want to help test the WIP version, ;install github.com/dstroud/dreamsequence_dev There's a small jam at the end if you just want to hear what the new stuff sounds like: 00:02:02 Poly seq mode 00:06:01 Seq 2 00:11:52 Event seq rotate jam More about Dreamsequence at l.llllllll.co/dre...
Grid improv session, trying out some new ideas

Two things I'm playing with: 1. Poly Seq mode. I like the simplicity of a mono seq but this open up some options and has some applications for mono, too. 2. I changed the pattern rotate function to operate on the whole 16-step pattern rather than just the looped portion. I had an event set up to rotate it in 4-step chunks so I could keep updating the pattern as I went. I'm realizing now that, h...
First session with OXI Coral
Переглядів 75921 день тому
I've been looking for something like OXI Coral for some time. It's bewildering to me that there aren't more modules (or desktop devices) that: 1. Are polyphonic over MIDI (or i2c) 2. Have a bunch of CV inputs for modulation 3. Have controls like a module, not a microvave 4. Fit in an Intellijel Palette Anyway- more thoughts on this guy after I've gotten to use it a bit more. For now, I'll just ...

3am brain: yo dude you should just record your modular right to Norns. It's right there. Also, if you're not actively fiddling with Grid, just unplug it. You got that big ol' battery. Move it wherever you want. Cool. Patch notes: Voice is just Quadrax into Belgrad. Kinda weird but it works. Beads is taking doing a pitched delay (down from like Eb to Ab whatever that means) which creates some in...
How-to: Marbles + Dreamsequence = chord superpowers
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Місяць тому
I wanted to share some tips on using Mutable Instruments Marbles with Dreamsquence's CV harmonizer. Most of the concepts apply when using other modules. I hope you find it useful and apologies for it being a bit of a ramble (chapter markers at the end of this description). Background: My personal favorite feature in my Norns script, Dreamsequence, is the Crow-based “CV harmonizer” which address...

Most of my videos in the last year have been pretty heavily-focused on trying out Dreamsequence features with the eurorack being sort of ancillary. This session was a good example of my original vision for the project: a sequencer that can get out of the way and let the modular synth do what it does best, while shoring up some of its weaknesses. Namely, providing some structure to the compositi...

Someone sent me a link to this great piece about "working with the garage door up": notes.andymatuschak.org/Work_with_the_garage_door_up That's what I'm doing here and am always glad to have friends drop by. I imagine most folks who take the time to read these notes know that this "channel" is just a personal journal of almost every session I have had since I got back into music-making during the pandemic. It's just a hobby I'm not a musician. My goal is to find something of value in every session, no matter how flawed. I am primarily interested in process and if something interesting results, that...
One last try with Beads and Magneto
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Місяць тому
I think this might be my last patch with Beads and Magneto. They are incredible modules but I just find them to be inscrutable. Especially Beads. This composition probably took less than 10 minutes but I couldn't get anything inspiring from the patch after a couple of hours fumbling about. I had a couple of takes that were *almost* okay but the busy patch and my gradually-increasing level of in...

Ah just kidding. Every once in a while I make something with drums to make sure I hate the process of making things with drums. Yep- it's still the case here. Patch notes: Arp is an odd (literally, 9-step) sequence from Dreamsequence that is combined with some periodic random glitchies courtesy of Marbles through DS' CV harmonizer. DS 1.3 has a custom Crow voice that lets you do some interestin...

Trying to get back into the habit of making music regularly. The ideas aren’t flowing yet but maybe things will pick up. Patch notes: 3 voices are being sequenced by Dreamsequence - 1st voice is Rhodes samples from mx.samples on the shieldXl (notes sent via cyberMIDI). The sequence is actually a slow strum that begins with one note and then somewhat randomly changes the note count, range, and i...

Dreamsequence v1.2 chord voicing and strumming
Hi there, congrat for your sequencer, I just started using it ! where did you find the usb cable ? Thank you
"UGREEN USB C Cable Right Angle" on Amazon
@@ModularBeat Thanks, however I have usb mini-b grid connector.
whats the norns used for?
Just sequencing the modular
Thanks very much for this incredible Script, I am exploring it. Meanwhile that computer keyboard how it’s being as midi input with Norns ? Also can you please name the computer keyboard please ? , thanks
The keyboard is OLKB Planck. Ableton live has an option to play MIDI using a computer keyboard, which you can send to Norns using a Denki Oto 2host. Keyboards like this can also be programmed with QMK to output MIDI directly but I have not tried it, personally.
Thanks for the info. With respect to the script can I route the midi from chord to one midi device (let’s say midi device 1 connected to Norns ) and sequence to another midi device (Device 2) , I tried changing the voice midi destination but it only show the first midi device 1.1 for both chord and sequence. Please advise. Thanks
@@ajilful Yes, make sure you have configured your MIDI ports in the system>>MIDI menu. If you need to send to different channels on one MIDI port, check out the "Configuring MIDI channels" section here: github.com/dstroud/dreamsequence/blob/main/README.md#preferences
😍👏👍
Still noisy even after the patch
💕Wow💗💗💗💗💙💙💗💙💙
Ah man that grid is so expensive! :(
Neotrellis is a good alternative that can save you some $
Thanks! :)
Mate, I adore this piece of kit.
It’s beautiful
Sounds awesome man. And I need that grid in my life. New subscriber ✌🏻
Grid is the OG and still the best. It doesn't do anything by itself so it's all up to whatever device you use it with. 99% of this channel is me messing around with scripts I've made to do stuff with Grid.
Hey mate what hardware are you using?
Monome Grid and shieldXL/Norns
Oh nice to see this update. Weird I found out via UA-cam though. I guess that's what I get for mostly lurking on Lines :p
saving gear/techniques for a rainy day is not something i thought other people did... 😂
For $2400 at current prices it should sound very good!
Fortunately I mean the "Key 1" button on Norns which costs 24 cents 😅
What gear is the one in the right?
#shieldXL by Denki Oto. It's a DIY version of Monome Norns.
This gives me nostalgia for the old Treasure Mountain DOS game
Percussion! He percusses!
Sounds great - love the percussion break about halfway.
love the breakbeats !
damn, that looks fun af. might have to save up for a monome zero....
You can also use my mod, Combiner, to use 2 smaller Grids together, FWIW. Might actually help keep track of beat divisions, come to think of it.
Wonderful 😌 )
and very inspiring...
Very Nice! This has such great beats and works so well together!
Unlistenable?? These are really great rhythms (at least for the first 3/4 lol)! They’re always changing but they still feel the same. Also I love your sample choices.
I don't know about the software, but the song sounds perfect just the way it is.
*_F O U N K E H_*
It is wonderful on my sat morning ears and eyes ✌😎
Nice
Gorgeous!
Ayy there he is ✌️
goodness this is good
I forgot I laid the groundwork for this in v1.1 so it was actually quick work for a change!
Do you have to have crow to use Norns with your modular or can you use any midi to CV interface?
Any MIDI to CV interface should work. Crow can do some handy things like give scripts direct control over envelope shapes or output specific voltages/triggers/gates, etc... but it's not necessary for making notes.
@@ModularBeat oh ok. Very good to know thank you for the information. I was always curious what crow really even did and what the major features it offered rather than just being a midi connection to modular. I have been trying to get my hands on a new norns from monome as i heard the shield can be a bit noisy but orders are never available when i check out their site.
@@joeymc5272 Crow is super powerful and well worth picking up. If you can't find an official Norns, I can recommend the shieldXL by denki oto. I've noticed no noise issues with mine (but haven't really gone looking for it, either).
wondering what module you use for the scales
Ornament and crime
Beautiful!
👍👍🏻👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿
Beautiful patch!😊
Oh too beautiful and too short 💜
35 seconds of lo-fi beats to study to 💁
Love multiple seq's with different patterns per seq. Would make arranging much easier and dynamic (without having to always rely on events, which are hard to navigate).
Also, using CV in to rotate patterns would be really cool.
That's fair. I'm not going to do it until I can figure out a way to get the interface working well on Grid, tho. It's kinda frustrating because it'd work great on the 16x16 size but I don't want the standard 16x8 size to fall behind. Will keep thinking on it!
Sounds great. What are you using? I don't recognise the hardware
Monome Grid, Denki Oto #shieldXL, playing Ableton Live piano.
Hey this might quench my thirst for 9ths, 11ths, 13ths flat-5s etc, Great work!
It's not ideal but might work as a stopgap!
2 seqs is elite!
Great video. Really enjoyed it. I think the release issue could be due to voice stealing. Try increasing the number of voices assigned to the part and see if that keeps the note playing through the release stage while the new note fires. hth.
I hit play on this and the crickets outside my window here in Hawai‘i were in rhythm and in tune, like a little etherial tremolo shaker chorus. Beautiful work!
Dang that sound so nice. I’m trying to get myself amped up to try some field recording for this sort of thing!
love the poly seq mode! looks very playable/experimentable. maybe even worthy of its own app, esp if two note ranges could be targeted separately by the event triggers to have one half rotate and the other remain the same. Or that same concept but with Chords and Poly Seq each taking a half of the grid
Those are really good ideas! Funny enough, the two halves layout is exactly where my scripting journey began with MINIM: ua-cam.com/video/1SCG_FcJc24/v-deo.htmlsi=cuAyaGvsR6qlo1kw Might be fun to revisit some of those ideas about playability on Norns though, which is so much easier to develop for!
Could you please do some more Grid and Norns tutorials? :) I just purchased both arriving end of the month from Monome. So excited!
Hey congrats! I almost exclusively use my own Norns script so am not of much help here. Check out ua-cam.com/users/tworoundrobins !!
Beautiful 🌌
That's it I'm buying coral.
I think it's a no-brainer for anyone using MIDI, but I think I'd already recommend it over the regular Plaits, even for folks using CV.
Manuel from Oxi instruments is an amazing guy. Always close and very very innovative in everything he does. It is really amazing that he is able to take time to make and evolve such incredible products and to be able to kite surf in the sea. I love your videos … you know it :)
Yeah between my experience with this module and OXI One I couldn't agree more. I initially dismissed Coral as being just a Plaits clone with some extras, but this is much more than that. Reminds me of what Apple does: they are not the first to market, but they have a way of taking existing ideas and elevating them to a level that makes the rest of the industry play catch-up for some time.
Awesome!
